Using Windows 'backup And Restore' To...restore Some Files?

Jul 17, 2012

I have an old HD that I used to use for backups in a different PC setup, and though I deleted those backups when I moved on to a different HD, the backups were recoverable using Pandora and I believe intact since I never used the drive in question after that time. So specifically, I now have a folder called "Backup Set 2011-02-13 190024" that contains a 84 zipped folders worth 13.1GB that comprise that backup, and I want to restore them in some automatic fashion to see what's actually worth salvaging. (I assume this doesn't have to be done one-folder-at-a-time, drilling down through five layers of branches in the folder-tree, and almost immediately forgetting where I am...) But when I look at "Backup and Restore," I can't bring up this or any target folders - the link "Select another backup to restore files from" produces a blank set of choices, and there doesn't appear to be any way to 'load' a particular folder to restore, as I would have expected.

Restore Personal Files After System Restore?

May 19, 2012

my Windows 7 after restoring it to factory configurations. I installed Ubuntu 12.04, the installation smooth as butter, but after a few days of usage, the GRUB system screwed up. After a LOT of problems I managed to restore my Laptop to its default configuration. Then, I tried to restore my personal files with the DVDs I made, but when the manager finished, it only showed a folder with all my files in it! And it didn't give me any option to restore these files or something!

Upgraded From Vista To Windows 7 - Files Are Gone?

Oct 1, 2010

I've installed the Windows 7 upgrade from Vista onto my C drive - I was careful about making sure I didn't do a custom installation because I wanted to keep my files and programs. After the installation - my programs are still installed, the file folders are still there, but the folders on my D drive are empty. My music, photo, video, and document libraries are completely emptyOther threads have said to look in the Windows.old folder but there is no Windows.old folder on my computer. I had a few folders with documents on the desktop that are intact - so why would it delete some files but not others?

Downgrading To Vista, Will Keep The Files Have On Windows 7?

I'm planning to downgrade to vista, (don't ask why) and I was wondering if I will keep the files I already have (images, music, documents) in a Windows.old folder, because I remember having that when I reformatted Windows 7 or something like that. The downgrade to Vista is built in my Samsung notebook (F4 on Startup to repair computer) but I have images/music on this laptop that I can't lose, and I don't have any USB's or hard drives I can use at this moment.

Is Windows 7 Using Vista Files For Boot ?

Nov 6, 2009

I like many others have a dual boot with Vista and now want to delete it. I have read other threads about using "Startup and Recovery" to remove Windows Vista from the Splash screen and then Formatting that Vista partition.

However I have also read something about Windows 7 using boot files from the Vista partition. How do I no if Windows 7 is doing this or not. I believe Windows 7 is the primary boot OS.

Downloading Files From 32-bit Vista To 64-bit Windows 7

Dec 14, 2012

I just rebuilt my system -- new motherboard, CPU, memory, HDD and OS. My previous hard drive died. Fortunately, everything was backed up onto a portable hard drive using Windows Backup in Vista.

I went with a new full retail version of 64-bit Windows 7 on my rebuilt system. I now need to create the other User Accounts and restore all our files from the Vista backup. I want to make sure I don't mess things up, so I have two questions:

(1) Is there anything I need to do to make sure my Windows settings don't get messed up when I use that 32-bit Vista backup to restore my files onto my new 64-bit Windows 7 system?

(2) There are 4 user accounts on the backup (mine and 3 others). My account was, of course, created during the installation of W-7. Should I create the other 3 user accounts before running Restore, or do they get created automatically during the restore process?

Restoring Files From A Vista Backup To Windows 7

Oct 24, 2009

I'm trying to restore files from a Vista backup into 7, but, once they're restored I can't find them.

It only affects files that were in the various 'my documents', 'my downloads' etc folders on my Vista install - files from other partitions etc restore fine.

It seems as if the files are definitely being restored somewhere, because if I restore them again I get 'would you like to overwrite these files' dialogs. I've tried searching for the filenames after they're restored but they don't appear. I think maybe it's possible that 7 is restoring them under a different user (although my user name on 7 is the same as it was on Vista).

1. Some files were not the latest versions, i.e. they were a month old.
2. Some subfolders simply weren't there. I had two subfolder in one of my folders and only one was restored and not the other. I made sure that I restored from the latest backup file.

Will Windows 7 Backup Of Important Files Still Restore If Disk Crashes?

Dec 2, 2012

I was reading yesterday that if I want to restore a file, I need to go to the file and right click and select restore. If the file does not exist anymore then one would go to the directory where the file originally was and select restore (or something to that effect). I have two disks and I want to save some important files from one disk to the other. I have always used Windows 7 Backup but now I am not sure I am doing the right thing. What would happen if my main disk crashed and there was absolutely no hope of salvaging it? Could I still restore from the back up made by Windows 7 Backup? I won't know the file names or directory structure if one disk goes down completely.

Windows 7 Live Mail Restore Failure - Where Is Data Files

May 3, 2012

I had some problems with my laptop and had to re-install my OS. I made a image backup of my HD with Acers's backup manager only to find it doesn't restore my data at all. (According to Acer this has become a common problem with the backup manager). I also made a copy of my HD luckily.

After spending some time on Google I discovered that the contacts, send emails and received emails were stored as an .eml file. I thought all was well and started searching through the copied data and found nothing. On top of that I discovered that the directory sections where the supposed files are stored, is not the same on the newly installed OS as it is on the copied data. For example:The copied data I searched in was under Users>username)>AppData>Local>Windows Live (or first) Microsoft>Windows Live but the new OS directory doesn't look the same. The windows Live 2011 I used before backing up was part of an update in the beginning of 2011 from MS and the one installed now I found on another site and then windows updated the rest. My OS must be the same as it's from a hidden partition on my Acer .

I have seen some XML files and don't know if this is a similar data file for WML.

Cannot Delete Old Vista Files

Jan 26, 2012

When I u/g to 7 from Vista it left a bunch of folder on each partition of my hard drive. They were prefixed by the $ sign. They are large - many Gbs and I want to get rid of them. When I try to delete them I get the usual UAC window asking for permission, which I give, but then I get a window saying that i have to get permission from PBS - OFFICE - PCPBS.I am signed on as administrator and further checking with whoami.exe shows that I am PBS - OFFICE - PCPBS.I have given PBS - OFFICE - PCPBS ownership and full control privileges via Properties/security/owner tabs but I still get this problem. Why do I need permission to delete when it is telling me that the permission is needed from ME???? If I am logged on as PBS - OFFICE - PCPBS - according to whoami, why is it still telling me that I need permission from myself?

No Boot Files In Vista

When In Windows 7 operating system and use EasyBCD I get the Windows 7 1 screenshot. My msconfig boot tab in Windows 7 looks like Windows 7 2. Let me add that I'm using a product called RollbackRx (ONLY) on the Win 7 operating system, both systems are on seperate harddrives. What do I have to do to get the boot files to be seen in the Vista msconfig boot tab, and the EasyBCD view settings window?

Restore Windows Backup Image Files From Network Location (XP Machine)

Feb 20, 2012

We are a small office, 5 or 6 computers. Only 3 are every day computers, other 3 are "server", admin and extra computer. The three in use every day are new win7pro x64 machines. Our server is xp pro (32bit) with a shared drive as our "server" drive. We access this for all our job related materials, etc. There is no network setup, just shared folders among our workgroup. we just got the new win7pro machines setup and are using Windows Backup function to create system images to the "server" computer in a shared folder. We've got the images created on 2 computers, and can see the .vhd files and associated folder structure. When testing to see if we could restore from these images, we got the error "Cannot locate backup sets on machine, etc."I moved the backup folder to the root of the drive, and made sure it was WindowsImageBackup or whatever the default is, but still could not find it.
