I'm having regarding my Dell with Windows 7 x64. Initially I got the message "Loading PBR for descriptor 2... Done". That's all it said, and did not continue to boot. I researched the error message and found many users with similar problems that solved it by booting the Windows 7 dvd and running bootrec.exe from the command prompt, so I attempted this. I tried bootrec with the /fixmbr, /fixboot, and /rebuildbcd options. After trying to fix my problem with bootrec, the "loading pbr" message no longer appears, all I get is a blank screen with a blinking cursor after the BIOS. I'm not sure what the problem or solution is at this point. I'm not sure if I've made things better or worse. I tried running chkdsk /r but it won't run, complaining that the disk is write protected. Edit: I just realized that System Recovery Options is showing "Operating system: Unknown on (Unknown) Local Disk"
I have purchased an OEM pc yesterday and I installed windows 7 x64 on it. Everything went great with installation. No errors or anything. But when I restarted my computer, after the motherboard splash screen a black screen with a blinking cursor top left appears and windows doesn't boot. But sometimes, especially when I wait a few minutes to turn it on it boots normally till I shut it down. It is so random.

I have a sony vaio vpceb11fm laptop. the moment i turn it on i get the vaio sign and then a black screen with a flashing cursor on the top left hand corner i tried f10 to recover the system but come across the same problem.
I just made my first PC and after entering UEFI and choosing the CD drive as the boot disk I am led to a black screen with a blinking icon. Now I tried to boot from a USB, but this also led me to the black screen.

My computer would not get past the start up screen it just froze at the Windows 7 logo. Prior to this, I had absolutely no problems. I shut it down one night and came to start it the next morning and it wouldn't load. I format the drive and tried to reinstall Windows 7. It seemed to load everything fine and got to the "Completing Install" part, then just flicked to a completely black screen with a blinking line in the top left-hand corner.I did read on one forum that perhaps it was a RAM issue, so I removed one stick and the process actually completed! I thought I had nailed it. After setting my computer back up and with everything working just fine, I put the RAM back in. On restart, it locked at the logo again, so I figured it was definitely bad RAM, HOWEVER!! Even with the RAM now removed, I cannot get Windows 7 to reinstall. I am still getting this awful black screen with a blinking cursor.
I'm trying to boot up this HP laptop that shows a black screen with a blinking cursor after the HP logo. I've tried using a windows 7 recovery disc to repair start up.I've restored the computer to an earlier date that it was working correctly. I've ran every test in the computer's built in diagnostics, and every single one has passed, and no errors in any part of the system were reported. Also, the computer will not start up in safe mode or anything like that.
for some reason I can't even get into windows 7, after I get pass the screen that says "asus" , my laptop brand, It goes into a black screen with a blinking cursor in the left hand corner like this:
I'm unable to do anything at that point, it just blinks. I can't even boot into safe mode now, the only think I'm able to get into is the Bios Setup Utility menus and Asus' express gate, which is just a media/internet/gaming/skype thing that doesn't allow .exe files to run...
This came factory installed so I don't have a windows 7 disc to help run fixes or anything.
Ok so recently I got a black screen with a blinking cursor on the top left. The computer starts up normally with the toshiba logo but then it goes to this black screen with a blinking cursor. I tried almost everything. I tried doing system startup repair, /fixboot /fixmbr, The "0" key, F8 doesnt work and so forth.I cant even reinstall windows 7 onto the computer because after it restarts to finish the installation it just goes back to the black screen with the blinking cursor on the top left. The computer is a Toshiba Satellite A205 - S5825 windows 7 32 bit.
Tech-savvy superior beings, I humbly come before you because my rig is having a fit. Whenever I start her up, I get as far as the splashscreen that reminds me which mobo I have, followed by a cursor blinking on a black field for eternity.

Lovingly jumbled together based on my perusal of this very site. It has brought me much happiness until now. A thousand pardons if this problem has been resolved in another thread. I have been forced to look for solutions on a smart phone, which is trying my patience
I have a gateway computer that is infected with a virus. I was able to load the computer in safe mode a couple of times before it no longer loaded login screen for my computer. Now when I cut the computer on there is only a black screen with a white blinking cursor. I have the avira rescue cd and have changed the seetings to boot straight from the cd rom but even after running the rescue disc the computer will not allow me to use the (f) function keys. When I press down on any of the (f) function keys there is a beeping sound but no action. I tried to use a windows reboot cd made from another computer but it does not load on the start up like the avira resue disk does.
Sometimes when I turn on my computer, the screen will turn on as usual, and there is like a cursor that blinks in the top left corner of the screen, again, as usual. However, it will sometimes stop, and stay on this screen for upwards of a minute or more. The laptop sounds like it's still working, as the fan is going pretty fast and everything sounds like it's spinning, however it doesn't show anything on the screen. After around the minute duration, the screen will go black and the normal boot up process is proceeded with. From what I've read of other people, they can't even get past this screen, which is why I think my problem is slightly different, or the same, just not as severe. Does my problem also sound like it's the MBR, as indicated by other people's questions on the Internet?
If so, is there any easy way to repair it without having to use a windows 7 disc, as I have a laptop and didn't get a disc with it...
Today I tried to boot up my laptop but I am stuck at a blinking cursor on a black screen. To make matters work my keyboard doesn't work either so I can't use F2 or F12 before it boots to the black screen.
I have a Dell Inspiron, not always but sometimes on start up it restarts to a black screen with a white cursor. Safe mode does work.I don't know why it sometimes does this or what makes it stop. I have tried just letting it try to load up for as long as an hour with no change, sometimes restarting has fixed it but sometimes (like now, it has done nothing no matter how many times I've tried).
I just upgraded to Windows 7 on my Toshiba Satellite Special Edition laptop that came with Vista 64bit and the other night i downloaded iTunes 10 and told me to restart my machine so I clicked ok and then my laptop shut off and when it came back on the Toshiba screen came up as usual but seemed to stay on longer than normal then it goes to a black screen with a underscore that blinks for a few moments then becomes solid. Ive tried to use the "F" keys to get different boot options because i have the windows 7 ISO disc and a ubuntu disc that I could use but whatever i try my laptop wont process it just does the same thing over and over again and bever proceeds to the actually boot up windows.
I tried Linux yesterday, and wrote over my previous Windows bootloader files with GRUB.
I later that day (as I could not boot into Windows 7), I deleted the Linux partitions with Windows 7 DVD. Now, after BIOS I just get a white blinking border on a black screen.
I have been getting an alert that I have updates to windows 7, but they never seem to actually install. Tonight it didn't seem like my audio drivers were working anymore. On my other computer I realized that Custopack tools, which is a theme customization program that alters uxtheme.dll, wasn't working with the new service pack. So with this laptop I restored the default windows theme and rebooted, and got my audio back. However, I went to shut down, which would also install the update, and when I booted back up, Windows won't even start.I get past the bios, and then there's just a blinking cursor. The door on the CD-ROM works but the caps lock and num lock do not.
First off I have a Dell Inspiron n7010 system running Windows 7 Home 64bit
OK the other night I shut down my system and all seemed fine until next day. I went to reboot and got the normal Dell splash screen with both the Set Up (F2) and Boot (F12) options. After the Dell screen finished it then went to load Windows, but instead I got a Black Screen with Flashing Cursor. Can't move cursor at all.
On the Dell screen I can access the Set Up (F2) bios pages. I can also access the Boot Options (F12) Page. What I can not gain access to is the Restore (F8) menus.
I did not know to make any sort of boot disk or boot repair disk so I do not have either of these and I do not know of anyone who is using windos 7 that could make me one to use. Also Dell puts the rstore on the hard drive so onlyhave a MS Works CD and a Drivers & Utilities CD l ran the diagnostics utility but forgot to plug in my computer so when it was almost done the battery must have died so will redo the test later as tired tonight as been up half the night with this issue. But for memory the first 6 of the 8 memories areas it was scanning tested fine. Will post an update later today when Iget chance to run the whole thing again!!
I know others have had this screen. Is there a solution as have spent the last day or so googling it and seems very mixed results depending on the user and their own case with this black screen w/cursor.Some have said bad hard drive (I HOPE NOT THE CASE FOR ME AT LEAST!!!) Some have said bad mother board. Some have said virus or malware Some have referenced a software update both Microsofts and also specific computer companies. So what can I do to get to my files at least to back them up that is providing the drive is OK! I do know from the boot menu my hard drive is showing in the boot menus. Does this mean that the drives OK but maybe a corrupted boot area or something?
Been having 9 RootKit issues popping up on our Laptop found by the AVG scan for about a month now. I wanted to just do a complete Restore to get things running normally again. Problem is I have a huge amount of pics on there that are not backed up. Been trying to come up with a quick & easy way to do it.Did a Google search the other day & read that I could use a Bridged USB-USB cable & transfer the pics to our PC. Went to Best Buy to get it & they told me that the Belkin Easy Transfer Cable would do it. Well, I attempted to run the thing last night (I don't think it was even doing what I wanted) and now the laptop will not boot at all. There was an error message (that I didn't write down) on it when I got up this morning & now all I get is a black screen with the arrow cursor on it.
Alright, so my Acer laptop has been working fine with no problems at all since i bought it about 2 years ago. This was until yesterday where i turned it on, just to see no login screen, only a black screen with a moveable cursor
I tried ctrl+alt+delete didn't work
I tried to repair windows with the repair disc through a USB, didnt work. It said that windows couldn't automaticly fix the issue, in the log it said:
I tried to restore to previous system points, but didn't have any for some reason
When i boot from the repair disc, i'm able to get into the menu where i chose OS, and found out that when i press Load Drivers, i'm able to access my HDD, where everything seems to be intact, already copied some important work stuff to a seperate HDD if *** won't get working
I turn on my computer to eventually get a black screen with white cursor that will move around. The Toshiba insignia comes up beforehand as well as the windows four square icon then it is to this black screen and white cursor. I cant seem to get the computer to boot up from Windows 7 installation disc. Sometimes I also get a BOOTMGR image is corrupt. The system cannot boot. message as well. I imagine there is a solution of sorts as it seems many people have had a similar problem. I have a freind who maybe able to fix it seeing he is a computer programmer but that is not until the end of the week.
windows 7 on my laptop will not boot it goes to the toshiba screen then black with cursor in top left. i cannot go to safe mode or startup repair because when you hold F8 or any other key it just beeps. im trying to keep from trying the factory reset.

About a month and a half a go my laptop was infected with 2 trojan viruses and ever since I haven't been able to start it up as it stays on a black screen with a blinking cursor after the toshiba splash screen. I am able to use my computer by booting with Hiren's boot cd and have since cleaned up my computer and gotten rid of any viruses..but have to continue booting via disc and it is getting sickening to do so.
I built my own computer last year. The computer boots up just fine but before it bios screen comes up there is a blinking cursor that runs for almost 20 seconds and then bios kicks in and everything goes on normally form there.
I just rebuilt my computer, but reused my old WD HDD, OS and all. It used to be hooked up to an AMD rig, but my new CPU is an i5-2500k and mobo is an MSI P67A-GD53 (B3). So when I hooked everything up and booted for the first time, the computer showed an error saying that the memory or cpu had been changed and that I needed to run the setup, which I did. That led me to the blinking cursor on a blank screen. It stayed that way for several hours before I decided to reboot. That time "A3" "99" "B4" flash on the screen, then it goes straight to the cursor. So I decided to give a new hard drive a try. I went out and got an SSD, hooked it up, same problemMy best guess right now is that the mobo was DOA. I'm still kinda new at this PC building thing
i have a lenovo thinkpad edge 14" running 64-bit windows 7 home premium. the laptop didn't come with any CD's, everything was pre-loaded on. all i get when i boot it is a black screen with a blinking cursor , when it boots all it shows is the thinkpad splash screen then straight to the blinking cursor. i have access to a lenovo x220 running the same (i.e. 64-bit Windows 7 home premium) however no CD drive, the edge 14" does have a cd drive. looked at multiple articles on seven forums but none of them help because i dont have a cd burner
I recently dualbooted Linux Mint and Windows 7 on my laptop. Yesterday I removed the Linux partition without thinking, and forgetting about the GRUB bootloader. I'm at a stump now. When I try and turn on my computer, the Toshiba logo appears, then the screen goes blank with a blinking cursor. I searched the internet all of today and most of yesterday, all that did was tell me to do the bootsect /nt670 /fixmbr and all it's variations[CODE]
I started IT for a company a couple weeks ago. I get this tower with no idea what OS is installed. Is there a file that I can load through Trinity Rescue Kit that will tell me what version of Windows is installed on the system?
So I installed Windows 7 on my HD. The installation process went well. I chose my Username, password, etc, and then Windows prepares the Desktop for the first use, and then the PC automatically reboots.
The problem is that when the pc reboots after the final stage of the installation, Windows won't boot up and I get stuck with a blinking cursor. The only way I can boot up is when I turn on the PC and keep pressing F5 and then it takes me to a GRUB 0.4.4 Red Window like this one
When I chose the "alternative method", Windows boots with no problem. Is there a way to choose the alterative method as the default?
two day ago i turned on my pc as usual. But it did not boot, instead i got a black screen with blinking cursor, so is there any way to make my pc recover from this issue.
I've tried the f8 , it has No effect I even re installed the os but it does not work.. It does all installation work asks for my name and pc name . Then it does the video and perfomance testing . Then it restarts and i again get the blank screen with blinking cursor.
