CHKDSK Freezes At Startup?
Nov 3, 2009
I have CHKDSK running at startup and when the "press any key to skip in..." prompt appears the system freezes completely when the counter reaches 1. If I press any key the system freezes instantly. I did a chkdsk /r in repair console and it did not found any problems, but the startup chkdsk prompt won't go away.
Is it possible to disable the chkdsk autostart with repair console or startup repair? System is running 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate and hard drive in question is 5x 500 GB RAID5 array.

I upgraded from Vista to Win 7 using the HP upgrade disk. About every 2 weeks chkdsk will start at startup. The countdown won't stop and I can't skip it by pressing any key. When it counts down to 1 it freezes and I had to press the power button to restart. Then when it restarts the problem reoccurs.
In the past if I press F8 and choose last known good configuration, the system will normally boot. And then I'll schedule a disk check next time I start the computer and this will normally fix the problem. There won't be any check disk error in 2 weeks.
But this time no matter what I do I can't get it fixed. sfc /scannow didn't find any errors. I ran the system repair by pressing F8 at startup and it said it fixed the startup problems. But the disk check I scheduled at startup still won't run properly. It shows up and then disappears without actually doing anything.
I'm using Avira now but the problem was there when I was using Avast. I don't know what might be causing the problem.

I'm facing some problems with my C drive. Errors were said to be found in C drive during Error checking. However, I could not auto fix system errors when C drive is in use. Thus I've assigned a chkdsk upon start up. Here's the catch, the Chkdsk appeared for a sec and was automatically terminated abnormally by the system itself. I've tried to system restore, but was prompted that there's error, so I can't restore the system. I didn't have much knowledge regarding the backing up of the system, thus i did not create any backup entries. I'm using Lenovo Win7 Laptop, 64 bit.

I have not seen the problem but according to phone conversations when she turns the PC on she gets a black screen with a message that the file system is being checked, but the checking stops with an "unknown error", the black screen flashes and then she gets to her normal log-in screen. This has been going on for a few weeks (ARRRGGHH). The only reason she called me was that she lost internet connectivity this morning.I had her login, open a command prompt, and type in CHKDSK /f but the system returns an ACCESS denied and says she need elevated credentials to run this. As I said she is the only user and she is listed as an administrator under account controls. I had her create a new user account with administrator privileges but NO JOY she still cannot run CHKDSK /f.This is sounding a bit like a virus but I was wondering if anyone had some thoughts on why, or how, administrator privileges are being overridden?

My laptop has been running extremely slowly lately. It takes longer than usual to load regular programs and any web browser activity takes ages. I have run malware (Malwarebytes) and virus scans (Microsoft Security Essentials) and removed some items. Malwarebytes didn't detect much, but I found a trojan with Security Essentials. However, after removal my problems persist. I have scanned and attempted recovery of bad sectors. Issues were found and fixed, but a disk check was said to be necessary. I tried running chkdsk c: /F, but the disk check cancelled within a fraction of a second on startup.

I'm currently helping my uncle with his laptop (Acer Aspire 5742Z) running on Windows 7 with a problem stated at the title. I've tried waiting for it to finish up which took a couple of hours but go a BSOD moments after trying to login through windows so after it restarted I canceled the CHKDSK this time and was able to get through windows but everything was running very slow that I could barely open My Computer.

My Windows 7 Dell Inspiron 1440 laptop freezes after startup. This randomly started one day after I had normally gotten on the computer and decided to boot it back up. The computer starts up normally, and all the icons load up, but the connection bar has a circle on it. I can click on things, but nothing happens, it just highlights things. And when I hit control alt delete, the computer freezes and a few minutes later, it pulls up this thing that says the logon process was unable to display security and logon options when CTRL+ALT+DELETE was pressed. If the Operating System does not respond press ESC or restart the computer by the power switch In windows 7.

Shortly after starting up and logging in, one or more programs freezes (usually Firefox or Skype), but eventually even the taskbar will freeze up. When I tried to launch Task Manager, it doesn't run, and when I try to shut down it doesn't work either. The only thing I can do is a hard reset via the power button, and then enter safe mode. I scanned my computer with Avast!, Microsoft Security Essentials and MalwareBytes. All of them came up negative I then posted my problem to Reddit, and some users suggested me to run ComboFix (I did not know it was such a powerful program, and they seemed reasonably experienced). I ran it, and it actually fixed my problem for a while. But now I'm back where I started. What's wrong with

Basically what is happening is after 1h (and event viewer says every 1h 1m the system had to restart when I was asleep) my mouse and keyboard stop working and then the computer freezes over about 1 minute. Basically the active program will freeze, like firefox, then the desktop will freeze, then the mouse/KB wont work.
i5 4.0Ghz (Overclocked)
4GB DDR3 1600Mhz Ram (6GB page file)
6970 XFX x2 in Xfire
120GB M4 Crucial SSD
500GB WD External HDD
850 Corsair PSU
Gigabit Mobo
I recently installed Morrowind Overhaul 2.0 and it would freeze and give me a "low memory" error in an error box when I was trying to set that up. I'd still be able to ctrl alt delete to close it. This is around the time where the problem started. I used the Windows Memory Diag and it came up fine.I also have downloaded a lot of stuff recently and installed a lot of new programs. But I have scanned with MSE and Spybot 2x each (and am about to restart in safe mode w/ networking like a guide here said to and try Malwarebytes).I have also been unplugging External HDD constantly without ejecting but even with the HDD unplugged my computer crashes. I used Crystal Disk Info and HD Tuner and CHKDSK on both and they seem to work fine. HD Tuner is still checking my External atm though. When I woke up today my computer said there was a disk error but I dont remember the exact message and to push enter, this was before POST.
-Used CCleaner, Auslogics Registry Cleaner, Comodo System Cleaner,
-Dusted my computer to bring temps down and am running at around 36-44C idle on GPU + CPU.
-Did Windows Update
-Updated GFX to 12.4
-All Malware programs are constantly updated and I scan every few days
Ram failure?
HDD failing?
Virus?
Registry?
Its about time for a format anyway if I can't find the answer, but if its a virus or a hardware problem it will continue. Can virus infect a video file or music file or a game file? Like if I got a virus and had a clean video, could that video then be infected? Basically I want to know what I can keep if I do have a virus/worm/trojan.

I started windows normally and once I reached the desktop Windows freezes, I can still move the cursor but I can't click on anything. Pressing Ctrl alt Del only causes a black screen to appear and I am forced to reset the machine.

My problem is that sometimes when I start up my computer (from both hibernation and shutdown), windows freezes(sort of) on startup. It will start up after quite some time and everything seem to be running in slow-motion. I can move the pointer and perform actions in 1-2 sec intervals with about 5-6 seconds between them. When starting up in safe-mode it will freeze totally upon loading the file CLASSPNP.SYS.At first I was concerned about some hardware malfunction, but since everything works fine on Ubuntu (dual-boot) I assume this is a software error. The only fix I've been able to apply is using system restore, but this may have to be done several times for the problem to disappear and takes forever since the computer is running in "slow-motion". Also sometimes when i leave the computer off for a day or two (or just use Ubuntu instead) it will boot up win7 just fine.Since the problem occurs quite randomly and without any warnings it's been quite hard to debug/gather information on the system while crashing, but here is what I have been able to figure out so far: * While problem occurs, both cpu cores are working at 95-99%. Processes(random ones) take turns on using 99%. * Screen will glitch heavily and message will appear in tray-bubble: "windows nvidia kernel mode driver stopped responding". Things i have tried: * Installing newest Nvidia graphics driver. * Installing older Nvidia graphics drivers. * Full format and fresh install of windows7. In the reliability monitor i was able to gather this information: * Problem: Windows failed to start because of missing system files Description: A recent driver installation or upgrade might have prevented Windows from starting.* Problem: Video hardware error Description A problem with your video hardware caused Windows to stop working correctly.

I installed Win 7 Ultimate 32-bit version about 2 months ago. In the beginning it worked just fine. But after a while it started to freeze during startup at win7 logo. I have to shut it down manually and after I turn it on again it works fine. Recently when I turned pc on it started checking my hdd and after that it would startup. I haven't had any BSOD at all. Today I noticed that my antivirus software AVG free won't start. So I tried to start it manually but it shows error "C:Program FilesAVGAVG10avgui.exe
The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect.see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail."The reason I switched to Win 7 is that when I had xp I used to get a lot of BSOD because of the graphic card drivers. I wasn't able to install them correctly.

I am assuming this is the best forum of this post.About two weeks ago, I was on the internet and my laptop froze, I forced shut and restarted the laptop, and was greeted with a black screen saying "Realtek Family Controller, Media test failure, check cable" Although I don't use an ethernet cable to use the internet (I use wireless), I plugged one in and windows started up normally. Fastforward to two days ago, I was watching a video offline and my laptop froze, plus made a loud noise. I forced a shut down, and restarted. But now I only have to turn the laptop on, and it just freezes for no reason. Loading Google Chrome, or just looking in my folders. Only way to use laptop is in Safe Mode!
Therefore I am using Safe Mode with networking to post this and using IE 8 aswell as Chrome makes it freeze even in Safe Mode. My Specs:AMD Athlon II P360 Dual core Processor 2.29GHzWindows 7 home PremiumRAM: 4.00GBFile System; NTFSapacity: 298 GB (Used 91.5 GB) I have also downloaded Malwarebytes and ran it, and there was no spyware/malware on my computer. I have also ran the Windows memory diagnostic, but when it says it will display, the results once it restarted, I get no results so I assume there was no problem.

It really would be nice to know which driver. Can I blindly assume this to be mouse/keyboard related and that in lieu of deleting a driver I can simply install the latest Logitech drivers?
Please understand that my Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit w/SP1 is installed on a new Intel X25M SSD so I am not real eager to wipe the SSD and do a reinstall of Win 7 w/out SP1 (as I have been advised elsewhere)

I just installed Windows 7 yesterday from Vista (I got a CD through the upgrade because I got a new computer) and the install went fine. It worked for about 4 hours perfectly, but suddenly it just froze. I couldn't do anything with the mouse or keyboard. After manually shutting it off (power button) I can turn it back on, it loads the desktop and I am able to move the mouse for a few seconds, then it freezes.
I've tried booting in Safe Mode (what I'm in right now) and removing all the startup programs, and that didn't help. So now I've come for help.

Weird one guys. When I start up WIndows 7 - 64b, my machine locks up during startup. I have narrowed it down to my PCI-e USB card. When I unplug the card, all is well. When I reinstall it, it freezes every time. My question is how do I correct it? I really need the card to increase the number of usb slots on my system.

I am new to the forum and seeking help.I recently experienced a bad boot sector on my HDD and had to reinstall Windows 7 (x64). I then also installed Ubuntu 12.04. Since then, when I load up Windows, it will start up, load icons, gadgets etc, but then within a few minutes it will freeze and I have to do a hard reboot. Ubuntu doesn't do this. If I don't hard reboot I get a BSOD.I am pretty sure Windows was not a bad install or anything. I assume it's probably because Windows uses more resources than Ubuntu.Could the damaged hard drive cause a problem like this or can I assume I also have problems with the graphics card or the RAM?Windows freezes in normal mode and normal mode with low resolution. As far as I can tell it does NOT freeze in safe mode, unless I've just not been using it long enough. Does this sound like the sort of problem a driver could cause instead of a hardware problem?
