Broken / Changed .exe Association Due To Virus
Dec 18, 2012
I stupidly got the "Windows 7 Security Center" virus from an attack site that neither my browser (Firefox) nor Microsoft Security Essentials caught in time. I immediately knew what happened, but it had "hijacked" all of my programs to redirect to it (I'm guessing this lead to the broken association), so that I was unable to open my actual security program or Malwarebytes and clean up (I'm accessing the internet at work ATM).I managed to identify the invading process, shut it down, and revoked all of its permissions which seems to have it in remission as far as interrupting things. It's still there, of course, though. Now when I try to open any executable, I am met with a permission error. I am no expert at all on these matters, but it appears as though the virus changed the exe association to direct to itself, and changing the permissions only nullified the effect of accessing it.
How can I go about setting exes to open correctly so I can get rid of this thing?I haven't done much yet (I attempted a lengthy virus scan on my Linux laptop using Clam that failed miserably), so I can't rule a lot out so far. I do know that I do not seem to have the "command.com" tool that a lot of solutions for repairing the registry reference. I checked the directory and everything it doesn't seem to be there.I have a recent restore point; would that help? Could I make use of the command line in Safe Mode provided it runs?

i have been attempting to open some .exe files but keep on getting the message 'not a vaild win32 application'. A scan with Super Anti spyware shows the following - System Broken File Association HKCR\.exe. I am assuming that something is wrong with the .exe link. I have checked the list of defaults and noticed that the .exe default was missing. I have also tried some fixes which appear to attempt to change the registry, but these have not worked. Do i need to manually change some registry content?

When I put a DVD movie in my computer, right-click it and choose 'Play', I get the message: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action."Until recently, Windows Media Player would play the movie. I suspect the problem has arisen since I installed RealPlayer SP. However, doing a system restore isn't practical.I can't see how to restore the relevant file association.

My wife recently downloaded PCHealthDoc, and somehow or other it has changed the file association for .msi install files. That's fine, I know how to reassign it, but where exactly is the Windows Installer, and what's the name of the file?

I went to Control panel->Default programs->Associate a file type with a program and changed the association to file .BAT to explore.exe.Now, when I click on a bat file with the mouse, the whole desktop starts shaking. I think it goes into a loop. The problem, when I go back to Controlpanel-> Default programs->Associate a file type with a program. The extension .BAT is no longer there! It is gone. And when I examine the file property of some .bat file, there is no option to change what to open it with. There is no open with... only OPEN option. There is also no way to add a new file extension in Control panel->Default programs->Associate a file type. I can't add .bat again.I did Control panel->Default programs->Set progream access and computer defaults but still the .bat file association is broken, and when I double click on it, same thing happens. Now when I right click on a .BAT file from exploer, I also do not see the EDIT option any more.

Previously there were no issues in opening PDF files using AR. Then I could not open PDF files. I uninstalled and reinstalled AR twice I forced W7 to associate PDF files with AR I drank 7 cups of coffee while considering an alternate calling in life - perhaps an island without computers None of the above has helped. I still cannot open PDF files on this machine. I have not purchased the tickets to the computer-free island as yet s

I have a problem trying to change the program associated with a particular file extension. I was trying out different programs to find out how they could handle that particular file type, setting them as the default program and trying to open the file. But after setting the default to one program in particular, it seemed to "lock" the file type,This is true only for that particular file extention, all other extensions have this option enabled and the association can be changed. If I open the default programs control panel, and try to choose a different program to be associated with that particular extension, the entry does not change after choosing the program and clicking "OK" - it stays at the previous setting.

I have a similar problem with an application which hasn't an installation file file but it just come as an exe. In Vista and Windows 7 32bit the file association worked properly but now it doesn't. The application is Processing and opensource programming language - and .pde are files made with it. Now when I try to associate a .pde file with processing.exe (Open With..) nothing happen and the files remain not associated.

how can I change program association on Libraries? I mean, in Music, when you right click your Album Art it gives you the option to play with Windows Media Player. I would like to change that to WinAmp. Can it be done? I saw you can change the icon, so I guessed.

I received an email with an attachment showing as a pps extension, which is Power Point. Win Live Mail cannot open it. When I go to the file association panel, I have 3 extensions listed, to use Power Point Viewer (I do not have Office), but .pps is not one of the 3 listed ones. How do I add .pps to that list?

I have Microsoft Power point and in the association list, power point is designated as the software to be used for .pps files. When I get a power point downloaded attachment to my email client (.pps) and I click on it, I get the message that "it could not be opened because the helper location could not be found". I'd like to get this to work. I do know that I can save the attachment, open power point and view it but merely clikcking on it should work

in the Music folder, there's a "play all" button so you can play the whole album you've opened. When I click this button, it tries to play them all in WMP but I have set all my preferences and file associations for music to play with "media player classic".I haven't actually initialized WMP yet (just reinstalled windows 7) and I'd prefer not to as it had a habbit before of randomly trying to play things that were no longer associated with it.

About 2 weeks ago I made a mistake cleaning up installer files. I'd made this same mistake last year but didn't realize it right away and it caused all my MSO links to stop working unless I launched the root program. That time I re-installed MSO14 and it corrected everything. This time I caught the problem almost immediately, as files I r.clicked on launched a Win Installer window, which I had to cancel or wait to resolve, and another popup asked for a disc to a program, and after canceling that the normal popup menu arrived. I only had to do this once with my Opus Directory program (replacement for Explorer).
I restored the files I'd cleaner and a registry b/u but some damage remained. For whatever reason, MSO would not allow re-install although it was registered in CP. Other programs I wanted to remove would no uninstall. Windows update was having problems with NET Framework 4 update. (Solved that by repairing the file). So I have this ongoing problem with Explorer no program association, can't d.click on links to open files in MSO, and Win Installer trying to launch on r.clicks or d.clicks on files. I've search the net extensively on these problems and seen many similar complaints about various programs showing the "no program associated" error etc. But no solid solutions.
I believe the problem is in Explorer and I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to repair Explorer. There is a possibility Explorer itself is OK, because when doing a re-image this weekend to go back to the 15th and start over, explorer opened when needed by the MS engine behind restore operations. The other possibility is with Installer, but I've updated the Installer and various other things to no avail. Finally there is MSO and something corrupt there.

At work i use 2 different PDF viewing software. One is Adobe for editing and the other is Foxit for quick viewing. They have their pros and cons and so I use them interchangeably. For some work I will use Foxit for several hours at a time and only open something in Adobe on an as needed basis using the right click "open with" context. The opposite is true, for some work I use Adobe for hours and then use Foxit as needed with "open with" context.I want a registry file or some application that will enable me to simply double click on it and KNOW that my file association for PDF is now Foxit (or Adobe depending on what batch or registry file I double click on).I see there is "HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrent Version ExplorerFileExts.pdf" which changes when I edit the file association in control panel. It does update, but I can't manually change the "UserChoice" Progid item. It changes only through file association in control panel.I realize there are some in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT but they don't update when i update it in file association in Control panel.I don't know what to do or where else to look.It is tedious to have to go to the control panel -> file association manually.

This question is exactly what I am looking for, I think, but I do not understand the answer.I can give two examples of times when I should be able to send an email from a program but instead get an error message that no email program is associated and I should create an association through Default Programs. One example is in the program Living Cookbook from Radison Technologies. I should be able to email a recipe to a friend right from the application.Another example is the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) website. Committee members don't have email addresses that I can see and copy; instead, they have live links showing only the person's name, which I am supposed to click on to bring up and email already addressed and ready to compose. For me, it only brings up the no email association message.I understand a little about file associations and know, when installing a program, to watch out for them......... however, I cannot figure out to use the Default Programs to make the required

Seems like in Windows Seven there's no way to add a command line switch when setting up default programs? What I'm trying to do is ensure that Chromium is always opened with this command line switch:-allow-outdated-plugins.I have it in the shortcut pinned to taskbar. All is fine until I open a page via association when the browser isn't open.Chromium has Flash built in. I have it disabled. So without the switch I'm going to keep seeing "your plugin is outdated".I don't understand why command line params when setting up file types has been removed.
