Blue-screen When Adding XP To Windows 7-64bit, Change Drive Settings?
Dec 23, 2012
I run Windows 7-64 and need to install XP. I made a space, and booted from the XP CD. After it loaded files, when starting, it crashed. I read on a forum I need to set the drive to compatibility mode (called legacy in my setup). It warns my OS may not boot. What should I do? I'm afraid to change the drive setting and have Windows 7 not boot. But I need to get XP working. I do have two drives. Second is a backup, I could install XP on that, and set the second drive to legacy, and leave my primary drive's current settings.

I got the occasional blue screen of death before, so I reset to factory settings. It didn't help, and may have made the issue even worse, though I haven't used the computer much since I just got a laptop. I have windows 7 64 bit. I had gotten the haplii virus (which redirects my google searches to a different site, it later changed to link to a different site instead) and failed to remove that completely, so I am not sure if that could be causing it or no.

I am using a Windows 7, 64bit machine with an attached network drive I use for streaming my media. The manufacturer is Seagate (2TB) STAM2000. So, I have two folders in this drive:
TV Shows
Movies
combined there is just 500gb. So, the Seagate NAS tells me the drive is full. I right click on the drive and chose properties. I then chose Quota Settings. Here it says: To change these settings click Quota settings. I do this anf nothing happens. It looks as if this option is to prevent one user from filling the drive. I also connected a WD NAS and the same option appears.

I went away while the install was going on and came back to a computer that would not boot. tried the cdrom/dvd with linux live and got to linux mint 11.10 and then the compute just crashed and now, nothing even after a cmos short. cd and drives show on splash screen, but cd does not start to load. all i hear is a tick repeatedly. tried a disconnect of the cd/dvd drive and nothing.

I have a Toshiba laptop with W7 upgraded to SP1.I noticed that it adds autocheck autochk /r ??C: to the default autocheck autochk * in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession Manager in regedit.Even if I modify it manually to autocheck autochk * it still adds autocheck autochk /r ??C,I don't think this is an administrator issue as my other laptop with W7 SP1 (SP1 included) does not have this problem.

I have a WD 320Gb 3.5inch hard drive that was originally bought as an external drive in an enclosure. A few months ago, while booting, my computer would go through blue screens one after another if the external hard drive was switched on from the enclosure when the computer was started. I never really did anything about that, just left it off and turned it on when i needed it. Mind you, it and the computer still seemed to work fine.
Now i have decided to keep it internally. So, as soon as i booted up after connecting up the same drive, i'm going through these exact same blue screens again. I'm not 100% sure if that is the cause but signs point to it.
Here's the blue screen info:
The error message is:
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
and the stop info is:
STOP: 0x0000000A (0x000000B0, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x82250B04)
and finally, here's the picture i took of the blue screen, a bit is cut of but i know it says "IRQL" on the left hand side.

I recently purchased an Asus U36SD laptop and replaced the hard drive with a Samsung 830 SSD. I built recovery DVDs and installed Windows 7 on the SSD using these discs. Everything had been working fine for almost two weeks, but last night I got a blue screen of death after sleeping my computer for the weekend. I have seen the BSOD after booting from sleep before on another laptop so this wasn't too alarming to me especially after ~72 hrs of sleeping. However, this morning when I woke my laptop from sleep, I got the blue screen and my computer hung on restart until it entered the BIOS settings after some period of time. In the BIOS my SSD was missing. I turned off my computer and took out the battery for a minute, and retried and was able to boot into Windows. Within a minute I got another BSOD and my SSD disappeared again.
whether this is likely an SSD issue or some other hardware issue? This laptop is a PAIN to swap the SSD in and out because you have to unplug fragile keyboard and touchpad cables to access it, so I am weary of opening up the laptop if I don't have to, but I do suspect it could be an SSD issue.

I used clonezilla to copy the data on my laptop drive to an external 640gb drive I had. The cloning process went fine but when I went to boot on the 640gb drive I (expectantly) got a blue screen error. Now, the way to fix this would be to boot into safe mode and delete the drivers but for some reason every time I boot and press the f8 button it brings me into the Windows Error Recovery mode menu which has no options for safe mode and doesn't help at all.

I read the dual boot thread, with two hard drives. Just want to be perfectly safe. My wife doesn't like Win 7, I would like to install the XP drive from the previous computer. Both are sata, I have the XP drive in, but have not used an XP install disk. I don't want to lose data on either drive. My thoughts are to use XP on the new computer, and just copy any data from the Win 7 drive to a thumb drive, then to the XP drive. Eventually, the Win 7 drive could serve as backup, with Win 7 ignored. I do not have a Win 7 install disk.

I installed Ubuntu on my computer a few months ago and created another partition for it on my 1TB hard drive. I didn't really care for Ubuntu so I decided to delete the partition it was on. That might have been a mistake. Well, now there's 87.68GB of free space on my hard disk that I can't use and I don't know how to add it back to my c: partition.
There was another post about this a couple years ago, but I don't understand the instructions and am not actually sure if it worked. Can someone explain how to do this, please? I'm not completely computer illiterate, but I'm not familiar with partitioning disks. It was just the one time with Ubuntu.

So, I've added a second hard drive to my Windows machine and now it will not boot up. I added the new hard drive on SATA 3. The original is SATA 1, and my DVD is SATA 0. This is how it's always been; I've changed nothing else. I don't have any idea where to start fixing this. I have a dual boot with Ubuntu on the same SATA drive 1, and that boots just fine. I switched on the new hard drive in the BIOS, and flipped a few other options on and off to no avail. When the computer boots I choose the Win7 install. Then it will take me to a screen that asks me if I want to start windows normally, or do a disk repair. Starting normally gets you nowhere, it will just end up resetting the computer. Starting the disk check will do a scan for a few minutes and then ask me if I want to send an error report. Clicking yes or no doesn't seem to matter because after that the only option is to shutdown or reboot. When this first started I at one point had the option to do a system restore, but I didn't think it was necessary so I didn't. I no longer receive that option or I would try it at this point

I had bought my Acer notebook a while back, which had 3Gb, but seemed insufficient for my work. Hence, I upgraded it with two new RAM Modules of Transcend make (2 X 4Gb) recently. However, I haven't found any noticeable performance improvement post this huge upgrade. Also, when I check the Virtual Memory settings, it shows that "Currently Allocated - 8054 Mb" and "Recommended - 12081 Mb". The check box on "Automatically allow windows to manage paging file size" is checked by default. Every time I go to this screen, and even though I don't change anything, it prompts me to save the setting and restart windows.

My company is running several XP machines. All of these machines will need to have a hard drive added to them that will be imaged with our corporate Windows 7 image. How can I get the Windows 7 bootloader to recognize the XP install? We don't want to have to use a 3rd party app such as EasyBCD. We would like to create a batch file that utilizes the capabilities of bcdedit.exe to modify the bootloader so we can repeat the process multiple times with out installing the 3rd party app. (plus, the boss doesn't want us using the 3rd party app).

The laptop is an Acer Aspire 5732Z, the specs are:
CPU - T4400
RAM - 3.00 GB
OS - Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, no SP1 yet
the hard drive is about 250gb, with most of that space free, and just 1 visible partition.
It has 2 problems
1) It takes a long time to boot up, it used to be excessively slow in windows but removing Norton 360 seems to have solved that part. I can time it if needed.
2) A lot of the programs on the system are blocked by windows security, causing the orange "These files can't be opened" error message to pop up.
These include gfxUI.exe (the UI for the onboard graphics), the installer for Crap Cleaner, the installer for Service Pack 1, the add new user window, and a load of other files I don't have a list of. There's only 1 account on the system, and it's an admin account. I've tried to use the run as admin option where possible.
Here's what I've done so far:
- Reinstalled intel graphics drivers, no effect
- Ran a startup repair, after an hour it hadn't loaded.
- Uninstalled norton 360, system speed improved by several hundred times, otherwise no effect, and bootup time still seems as long.
- Gone into windows firewall and reset all settings to default, no effect.
- Tried to change the settings in internet security, set everything low except for my computer, which is locked, no effect
- Gone into internet security and clicked set all zones to default, no effect
I tried to install SP1 (after failing several times before due to the system being too slow to install it), security blocked it, then apparently deleted the installer. I tried to make a new user account, to copy the registry settings for the security to overwrite the faulty settings on the main account, the new user account window was blocked by security.
In a cmd window run as admin, used command
secedit /configure /cfg %windir%infdefltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose
gave a progress report, completed, no effect.
I backed up important data, tried to reinstall windows from scratch, the installer doesn't load, after clicking install now it just starts loading and doesn't stop. At this point, I thought it must be a hardware issue, so I tried to run some diagnostics from a bootable CD. It wouldn't read the CD.
