ATi Radeon HD 4890 - How Long Until An Upgrade Is Needed
Jan 30, 2011
Since this is my first gaming PC, I know basically nothing about how long a graphics card will last before needing an upgrade to keep playing newer games. I'm getting a bit worried with the 6000 series already out, and I'm still using a 4000 series. I have the money, I just do not want to buy a new card until it will actually do me some good.

I have windows 7 7600 x64 and using the newest official Catalyst drivers from ATI for the Radeon 4890 1GB video card I own.
However I have noticed some little issues in games. Two games Im currently playing Trine, and Mass Effect show what I call a tear (its not anything missing) but when your running around you see a visible line move its way up the screen like your watching a fast refresh on PC-Anywhere or something.
It does not effect the game at all, or slow it down and its not 100% of the time its when your running or moving side to side etc. Always while in motion.
I thought maybe it was a vsync issue so Checked that in the graphic settings for Mass Effect but no difference. Does anyone know what Im referring to if there is a proper name and how I can go about reducing it or eliminating it in games?
In Trine it does it as well when IM running and jumping around (side scroller).

I booted Windows 7 a few minutes ago, and saw what made me think something might have happened relating to my graphics card. Right before the log-on screen came up, I saw a lot of flickering/static, which I thought was really odd because the PC is connected to the monitor with a digital signal (DVI). The computer froze, at this point and I had to reboot. I'm posting from the same PC, so needless to say the reboot worked.

The problem is that for some reason I cannot get a pixel perfect screen to the Sony Bravia Full HD LCD TV with the Radeon 4890. There are always black borders around the screen.
Have the Catalyst 9.11 Suite for Windows 7 (64 bit) installed.
With a Nvidia 8800gt there is no need for any kind of settings, the picture is pixel perfect HD 1080p straight away.
Any idea how to get the resolution / settings correct?

Today is my first day on Window's 7 and I've been having problems with it all day.
I get the "Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver version 181.71..." so I download the propper drivers and it won't let me open it.
This is what it looks like:
I can't find the file location either.
Also, not only does that not work but my NVIDIA Control Panel does not work. I double click, the loading circle comes up for 3 seconds and then disappears.
I can't just not download drivers, it's any .exe file.
I am not good with computers so if you explain it, please, explain it to me like I am a two year old learning to put together sentences.

So, recently I downloaded Windows 7 RC1 and the upgrade is doing alright except it's been upgrading for 17 hours and 20 mins, it's making very slowly progress with the last item .. switching the message at the bottom constantly between "Please Wait..." and "Transferring files, settings and programmes (395931 of 523838 transferred)" it's been on number that for at least 6 hours and 20 mins that i know of.
Should i leave it and hope for the best? or say it's over and it's time to do something about it?
Edit: Specs are RAID0 SATA HDD's, 3GHZ Dual core AMD, 8 GBs of RAM, ATI Radeon HD3870 and I'm upgrading from Vista SP1 to 7RC1

I have a Lenovo 3000 N100 with windows Vista 32 bit. I know it's possible to upgrade these successfully to windows seven from what I've read on the Lenovo Forums. Just to be safe I decided to run the upgrade adviser tool. It says it should only take a few mins to scan, but I've ran the thing for 45+ mins and it still keeps going. Is this normal for it to take more then "a few mins"?

I recently upgraded my computer with a new motherboard, processor, RAM, and video card. Before I did this, I installed a second fully functional 1 TB internal hard drive just to hold the system image and my important documents. I made a system image using the native software that was available on Windows 7.To be clear, I made a 143 GB system image from my first 1 TB internal hard drive and put it on the second 1 TB internal hard drive. I also moved my important documents over to the second hard drive. (The second drive was completely formatted and turned into a Basic drive beforehand.)After installing the new components, I wiped my first hard drive, deleting all partitions on it, but I forgot that I had one more set of folders that I forgot to move over to the second hard drive. However, since I had the system image on the second hard drive, I figured that I could use that to re-image the first hard drive, pull the files, and wipe it again. Now, since the old motherboard and CPU drivers were saved on the system image, I figured Windows wouldn't be able to load, but as long as the first hard drive contained my files, I thought it wouldn't matter since I could just install the hard drive on the family computer, pull the files, put it back into my computer, and start the installation process all over again. However, when I tried to re-image my first hard drive with the image I had on the second hard drive, I got an error saying that the recovery tools were not compatible, or something to that extent.
At this point, I figured that since the system image was SP1, if I installed Win 7 on my first hard drive and upgrade to SP1, then it would be compatible, so that's exactly what I did. After upgrading to SP1, I tried to re-image the first hard drive, but this time, I used the Win 7 disk in order to do so. I booted from the Win 7 CD, got to the system image restore, and got an image similar to this:Where it says "Intel Raid 0 Volume," I had my C: drive. I assumed that the C: drive was my first hard drive, so I didn't check anything. In the next window, I was told that my first hard drive would be formatted and re-partitioned, so I said yes. When the system was preparing for the re-imaging, I got an error saying that re-imaging failed, and the system would restart.Of course, since my first hard drive was formatted, Windows didn't load, so I tried the re-image again. I didn't get the error, and it showed that the system was "Restoring disk (C: )."However, it was taking WAY too long. 12 hours into the restore, it didn't even go halfway. I left it running while I was at work, and I just came home now and saw that my system was completely frozen. The mouse pointer didn't move, and I left it like that for a few minutes. After half an hour, I held the power button down to turn it off, and tried the re-imaging again. It was going as slowly as it did the second time around, so I canceled the restore, turned it off, registered to these forums off my family computer, and here I am right now.I'm thinking that I should replace all the old parts and try the restore again, but other than that, I'm stuck as to what I should do.

My graphic card is the lowest score for my WEI and I'd like to make it a little higher. I have a 305w power supply so I'm not sure what card/s I could run before needing to upgrade my power supply.
Right now I have a Radeon X600 graphic card in my computer. I don't know much about it or any of the better cards out there.
I currently have a VGA and a DVI monitor. In the future (hopefully near) I would like to get a LCD TV and use HDMI. I don't need a VGA port as I have a supply of various connectors/adapters/cords to get VGA.

Just wondering if am the only one with this issue? There is no ATI Overdrive tab in my CCC, it's missing. Is there anyone else here with ATI 4890 and Windows 7 x64 that can confirm this? So i know if it's a local problem or hopefully a driver problem.

Why is this. Like 10 minutes plus and it still says recycling. It should only take a second. Is it bad to let it continue at its own pace or should I restart the PC and try it again?

I've installed windows seven just before Christmas, and it served me well till middle of February, when "I had to explore it a bit more".And of course,I have deleted something and there was no way to boot win 7 up again. It booted correctly, but after"starting windowws" everything stopped.I tried to fix it,but no,and even worse,I was kind of short with space on C partition(cos me idiot,of course, made it just 30 gigs),and have turned off system restore.
Just for the record how smart I am,I made win 7(beta OS ?!?) my primary and only OS.
I had to save my files and didn't reformat C partition right away cos I planned to reformat it after I take the ownership and back up my documents.
So,I have installed windows seven again on E partition, which is now, after reassaining letters,C partition. And literally, now I'm having dual boot, both windows seven, one is working and one not.I have backed up my files a long time ago from now,but still didn't format that partition, and today I decided to do it.
And here is what I don't know.
When I created my C partition for Windows 7 first time,I got an extra 200Mb partition, but when I've installed Windows 7 second time on that "E"partition,I didn't have to make that 200Mb extra partition.
And now I wonder should I merge that 200Mbs with another partition and format them together,or do I have to leave it where it is?
I'm not sure, and I don't even know if another win 7 installation is using that 200Mb partition or not?
What should I do?
And one more thing,I have deleted windows folder from ex "C" partition couple weeks ago.

I have just done a clean install from vista to win 7 using a upgrade version of win 7 hp, following the tutorial off this site, but when doing the install it didn't ask me for the product key or if i wanted to activate win 7, any one else had this happen, do i need to do anything. When i look at system page it shows a product key that doesn't match the one in the box & there is a button that asks if i want to change the product key, it also states i have 30 days to activate win 7.

I use robocopy for copying files and directories. It marks all the new destination folders with the timestamp of the date the copy was done, so I lose the original timestamp. I use it in a batch so that I can create logs. I'm familiar with XCOPY but it doesn't suffice for what I need. Is there a good utility that can copy sets of files & or folders as in a batch file for frequent copy, or even a windows app?

Do I need a registry cleaner with win 7 -64 bit and if so please suggest one that will not screw up windows 7-64 bit. I dont know enough to go into registry and make manual changes. I always used latest version of regvac (registry cleaner) for win xp. I am now using cc cleaner and registry mechanic with windows 7 64 bit. The regvac site it says that iregvac s compatible with win 7-32 bit and does not mention win 64 bit. Author or regvac emailed me that it wont restore 64 bit registry in restore option.
