would people be so kind as to give me their opinion on windows defender, is it efficient and effective, do i need it to run in real time. i already have installed spybot, spywareblaster, avg virus and spyware scanner running in real time.

View 9 Replies View RelatedThe computer has worked fine since then, I've used the internet at wi-fi hotspots around my city, with never a single problem...until last night. While I was on-line at home, I was checking a website that I have always checked before without issue when my Windows Defender suddenly popped open and said that my computer was under threat and blocked Internet Explorer from me and started running a diagnosic. Well apparently it said that I had like 26 infections in my computer. That I had worms, spyware, adware, that someone was watching my key logs, etc, etc, and it gave me the option to click on the remove all. So I clicked on it, but instead of doing anything, another message box appeared saying that my Windows Defender is not the full version and that I must either purchase the full version or enter my key code for it. I don't have a key code since I never bought this program, was pre-installed.
Anyways, now whenever I try to open Internet Explorer, the Windows Defender pops up and says that my IE is infected and asks if I would like to purchase the full Windows Defender. I have clicked on both options. If I say "no", the computer blocks my IE, if I say yes, it opens my IE, but instead of taking me to a Windows website, it takes me to www.antivirus-care.com, which my browser says does not exist and instead takes me to another page with a listing of anti-virus program sites to buy from. Well, all this seems fishy to me because I can't do anything with the Windows Defender program. I can't turn it off, I can't change its settings, or even look at other options it has. Instead whenever I try the message window of "would I like to buy the full version now?" appears and keeps appearing.
Is it wise to have more than 1 antispyware program performing real-time protection at one time?

According to my computer no updates available however updates were last installed on 03/13/08 and yet when you look at installed updates it shows a windows defender update installed today. I have been reading several posts on this problem and have noticed that Carey Frisch posted a link to troubleshoot and now here is a problem and that is none of these apply to me... Once again Go figure!! Running Vista Business 32bit here in the good old USA and of course the English versionVista is and has always been updated right on schedule....

View 4 Replies View RelatedThis friend of mine has real problem with her laptop (Vista sp1)it was first noticed when her anti-virus did a scheduled scan. The anti-virus program hung whilst scanning the System32 folder.I tried with Windows Defender. Same thing, it hangs after a while.
I de-activated her anti-virus program (forgot the name. Not a well known brand) and downloaded/installed Avast, to no avail it also hangs whilst scanning the System32 folder.I also tried to scan using SFC/scannow. The PC freezes at 68 % of the scan.I tried these different manipulation in safe mode.Same results and everytime, the PC Freezes and I am obliged to do a hard stop/restart.
i've installed vista ultimate 64 on my computer. and ever since it either blue screens driver error which i have updated my graphics card. still blue screens
and some time it just randomly freezes the hard drive light flashes but the mouse or keyboard or nothing on screen works at all.
i really like vista but with this problem its forcing me to go back to xp and i dont want to

A word of warning if you're like me, own a Dell, Lenovo/IBM or HP notebook. Do not install any version, variation or anything related to Ubuntu on it. It WILL fulk your machine good and proper. The as-of-yet unfixed bug 43745343802 in Linux kernel for Ubuntu which corrupts the real-time clock, and causes your machine to boot simply with the message "Time-of-day clock stopped", leaving you unable to get into the BIOS, boot from external sources, or do anything even remotely useful with
your notebook - effectively bricking it. The fix? You can rip open your notebook and extract the CMOS battery, or call manufacturer to see how good warranty is. The awesome thing about that bug? It's in Dapper, as you can see.. but I just got it in.

In my entire 23 year history of fluking with PC operating systems, not ONCE have I ever come across one capable of bricking your hardware. I'd like to support the Ubuntu developers, because from their mission statements and other crap, it sounds like they're trying to do the right thing - but folk me, a bug this serious possibly spans three releases and still isn't fixed? View 4 Replies View RelatedI am using vista home premium with a 64-bit operating system. I have Avast free antivirus installed. I started getting messages from Vista Defender that my computer was being attacked by viruses, spyware and trojan horses. When I clicked "remove all" they wanted me to buy something. I restarted my computer and I am no longer getting the vista defender warnings, but I can't access several programs like windows media player, yahoo messenger etc.
Also, the icons for these programs disappeared from my task bar. When I try to launch these programs from the start menu I get a message that says "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item". I'm the only one that uses this computer.
Is there any software that show what process is currently starting and running on screen in real time? I have Vista Ultimate. Somewhere along the startup of Vista there is a long wait. I think the perpetrator is the AppLauncher in the Vista Sidebar containing too many icons. In fact 56 of them. I guess the wait is while hte software is locating all relevant folders. But then again, I really don't know, as the wait is still there even when the sidebar start up is disabled. All I want is a few words on screen stating that this or that process is now starting... The list of started processes I can see in my Sysinternals Process Explorer. Do you guys know of such a ultility?

Now, I tried to scan a photo on the Brother. I set it to scan to PC. So far, so good. (I've used this many times)But it didn't pop up on my pc screen. It popped up on my husbands screen.

After doing that I went onto the internet and connected with time.nist.gov and checked the time. After that I was no longer able to go into the internet time tab. It tells me that time.nist.gov is the time connection and I can't change it. It tells me I need to have permission to do this as administrator. I am the administrator! What goes here?

I have turned off indexing, that search thing, and auto defrag and also the superper frech thing but still it is running at 100%.
if i check the monitoring tools it shows it at 100% all the time.
i left the machine on for 3 days doing nothing, and still hd is running at 100%.
i cant do that much with the thing, it can take 5min to copy a 10mb file on the desktop to my documents folder.
I have done a totaly reinstall (and disbaled the above services), and again still running at 100% all the time the machine specs, are quad 2.6ghz, 3gb ram, 750gb hd.
i have also noticed that the avalible memory is 10mb when checking on task manager.
(i have also installed windows xp pro, and this works all ok, so i am guess it is something to do with vista)
Can not get my HP 7400 scanner to work after upgrading to Vista Ultimate 32 bit. Not the hardware - works fine under XP pro using same hardware configuration. Did a clean install, installed motherboard BIOS updates, scanner BIOS updates, Vista updates and the correct driver from HP. The scanner installed and Device Manager says device is working properly. When I try to scan, scanner initializes, starts to scan then locks up. Then can no longer be seen. ASUS M2N-E motherboard with AMD dual core. Other than that Vista works OK with the rest of my system
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy new laptop arrived this afternoon. I turned it on, it was working fine. I'm using Vista Home Premium. I installed CA Anti-virus software and after the installation my computer restarted. Since then, I haven't been able to get to the desktop. I get the BSOD with an arrow. After about 30 seconds displaying the BSOD, it automatically reboots and repeats the cycle continuously. I've tried F8 upon restart and chose last known configuration but I get the same BSOD. I also tried to get into safe mode but after choosing the option it goes back to the BSOD.....................
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've recently put together a new computer using these parts: I've updated to Vista Ultimate SP1, run multiple disk clean ups, defrags, use CCleaner, clean the registry, defrag the registry, disabled services and have made tweaks according to the guide provided on this website and have minimal startup programs running but my boot times average around 2 minutes. For a new computer with new hardware, this seems unreasonable as many users report boot times between 30-60 seconds. What could be wrong with my computer? On the vista loading screen with the green bar, it goes through about 22 cycles.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to run Windows Live One Care Safety Scanner (beta for vista) I can successfully install and run it but when it performs the scan and it reaches 97% completion the program hangs. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software. I thought the problem might have arisen due to vista's securitythen reinstall th features so I first made sure to run internet explorer browser when I re-downloaded the scanner files. However, this has made no difference... the scanner still installs and runs but again upon reaching 97% completion hangs.
I am interested to know if anyone else has encountered this problem and better still if anyone knows how to resolve it.
I calculated that to migrate to Vista or Windows 7 will cost close to =A32000. not including my time - It will take around 100 hours. This is because many of my existing software / tools / utilities does not work on Vista and the vendors expect me to buy a new license because it is a "new product" even though it does exactly what it did before - just on a different OS. Even the products that do work have problems and glitches that have to be worked around. All this takes time MY VALUABLE time. In other words I am suffering because Microsoft want money. In the past some versions of windows were worth migrating to Windows 2000 and Windows XP were great
But most of the improvements to Vista / Windows 7 are mostly transparent to normal users - even monster power users like me. I believe Microsoft have a serious attitude problem. just wait until they take full advantage of TPM to screw even more money out of us. If I am wrong please point out a real tangible benefit that Vista or Windows 7 brings to a large percentage of users or to me. I also I can no longer buy a laptop because they only come with Vista GPU drivers (some come with buggy unsupported XP GPU drivers - great)
My vista keeps locking up after various amounts of time, no matter whether its just idling, or im making the computer work hard. As ive read on other topics, I think its a driver issue, but I just dont know what to do. I will try another fresh vista install tomorrow and get the vista updates quickly to see whether that helps the situation. I have ensured it isnt overheating like it did initially when I bought the system, and it is now a safe and low temperature in a running state. Ive re-installed, windows, and it froze after I installed the chipset driver. I contiuned, and found a sound driver wasnt digitally signed. However it still crashes. I have got the latest drivers for it. For it to crash, all i did was open recycle bin, from idle state.
i am having really slow boot ups lately on my laptop. i have done things such as virus scans, defrag hhd, scan regestry with REGESTRY BOOSTER 2009, defrag regestry. i also have no start up programs in my strat up folder. Problem is that i could start from dead start to a fully loaded desktop in 98 secs....now it takes 124 secs to do the same thing. where it takes the longest is at the boot screen i just watch it load then the windows logo comes up and it smooth sailing from there. i would say it takes about 8-12 secs after the windows logo to get to desktop.
