Ubuntu: Corrupts The Real-time Clock
Oct 3, 2009
A word of warning if you're like me, own a Dell, Lenovo/IBM or HP notebook. Do not install any version, variation or anything related to Ubuntu on it. It WILL fulk your machine good and proper. The as-of-yet unfixed bug 43745343802 in Linux kernel for Ubuntu which corrupts the real-time clock, and causes your machine to boot simply with the message "Time-of-day clock stopped", leaving you unable to get into the BIOS, boot from external sources, or do anything even remotely useful with
your notebook - effectively bricking it. The fix? You can rip open your notebook and extract the CMOS battery, or call manufacturer to see how good warranty is. The awesome thing about that bug? It's in Dapper, as you can see.. but I just got it in.
Edgy, and according to the comments, it was there back in Breezy as well. The next cu**nt who even breathes Ubuntu in my presence will receive a punch in the face. Jesus fluking Christ. In my entire 23 year history of fluking with PC operating systems, not ONCE have I ever come across one capable of bricking your hardware. I'd like to support the Ubuntu developers, because from their mission statements and other crap, it sounds like they're trying to do the right thing - but folk me, a bug this serious possibly spans three releases and still isn't fixed? One that, to date, doesn't appear in other Linux distro's? Get your fluking act together!

Is there any software that show what process is currently starting and running on screen in real time? I have Vista Ultimate. Somewhere along the startup of Vista there is a long wait. I think the perpetrator is the AppLauncher in the Vista Sidebar containing too many icons. In fact 56 of them. I guess the wait is while hte software is locating all relevant folders. But then again, I really don't know, as the wait is still there even when the sidebar start up is disabled. All I want is a few words on screen stating that this or that process is now starting... The list of started processes I can see in my Sysinternals Process Explorer. Do you guys know of such a ultility?

I have McAfee Internet Security Suite. I know how much most of you detest it, but I paid for a three-year subscription and I'm keeping it. Is it okay to leave Window's Defender's real-time protection turned on, or will it conflict with the McAfee?

I do not like XP. With a passion. It blows, along with all the people clinging to it's rotting carcass. May they all die horrid putrid rotting deaths. Okay not really but you get that I don't care much for XP, right?. I've always used linux as long as I remember too (****e I've used everything over the years - Atari, Amiga, Commodore..), and I actually abandoned XP for Ubuntu, save for playing games. I love Ubuntu! But, I must say using Vista 64 now for about a month I actually *like it*. There are a bit of things Mac OS could stea.. err borrow. Like Readyboost. I found a 2 pack of PNY 4 gig drives on sale for $25 at staples a few weeks ago, so I snagged them to use for readyboost. It's fantastic, Firefox is loaded and displaying the home page before I even release the damn mouse button. ..................

I recently went into Change Date & Time Internet time tab and chose a time standard to connect with. After doing that I went onto the internet and connected with time.nist.gov and checked the time. After that I was no longer able to go into the internet time tab. It tells me that time.nist.gov is the time connection and I can't change it. It tells me I need to have permission to do this as administrator. I am the administrator! What goes here?

I recently reformatted my computer and installed Windows Vista Business. I decided to give the encrypting file system a try and selected the Documents folder and the folder, where Outlook stores the .pst files, to be encrypted. Then I transferred the data I had backuped to another computer over the network before the format back to my HD (again over the network), directly into the encrypted Documents folder.
When I launched Outlook to import my saved e-mails it said that the Outlook.pst (not the backup, but the file it had created on the first launch before I had applied the encryption) file was not a valid personal folder file. So I restarted Windows and tried it again, this time Outlook launched fine, but it now claimed that my Backup.pst file was invalid. That's where I am now. I tried opening some other encrypted files and some of them worked, others were corrupt without any noticeable pattern. If I remove the encryption the files are still corrupt.Has anyone experienced this before or, even better, does anyone have a solution to this problem?

the main audience is "Vista" users. People who already spent a lot of money for an operating system, which they do want to use now. Ubuntu has a clear right of existence in it's area, but not in this group. If you like it better, fine. But don't try to spread your "religion" here when someone asks for help about a Vista problem.

We are using Dell laptops while travelling or at field offices.
We have to reset the clock and time zone, every time when we get to new
locations. That is quite a hassle. Is there better ways to do this?

I am using a Vista Home Premium Edition x64. I have wireless internet on it from my grandmas router in her room. Here's the problem though..., I am a real dedicated gamer. I play America's Army v2.4.0 so im real picky about lag. Sometimes I can just turn my computer on, and load up America's Army.. It will run very fine for hours and hours. Then again, I can turn on the computer and load it up, and everything will be going real slow. Even when I let everything have time to load. Maybe there is some kind of system performance tool I could use? Or maybe it's just my wireless connection. And if it was that, is there anything I could check to find out if it is really my connection?

I have recently had a virus. I have cleared this with C/Cleaner in safe mode. Since then Real Player will not connect to the internet and the weather service on the sidebar is "not avaiable". I have obviously cancelled something I perhaps should not have. Any ideas how to fix this. I thought of a system restore but those seem to have vanished as well before the clean up.

I've got an Sony VGN-BX197XP laptop that I've upgraded to Windows Vista Ultimate. Since then I've encountered some strange display-related issues:
1) I could only boot into Aero about 50% of the time. The rest of the time I forced onto the Standard theme with no Aero option. Since installing Vista SP1 I can't get Aero at all.
2) When not running in Aero mode I can't get the Windows Media Player to play video files, nor get a Perfomance Index.
3) If I plug in an external monitor I can't get a picture on the laptop monitor but I *do* get a picture on the external monitor and it runs Aero 100% of the time. It will also play video files and give me a performance index.

Recently I have bought Vista Home Premium x64 and to be honest I am having quite annoying issue with this OS . I had installed Vista on RAID0 partition. Additionally I have three other sata drives for my data . I noticed that from time to time when I am working on vista , system freeze for 2-3 sec then everything is fine and I can continue work. Particulary when for example I am opening some application or even windows explorer , my computer etc. (when it hangs I can't move my mouse). Moreover when it freeze I "hear" something inside my computer case as if my computer weak up from hibernation.

Im in vista 64 bit. I was trying to install a licence for Cubase and was getting a time, calendar error. I look and everything is on time to the second hand on my wall. But for the hell of it, I tryed syncing it to all the availible servers but got: "An error occured while Windows was synchronizing with whatever.server" However I can ping the servers in comand prompt. And also, like the topic says, It still keeps perfect time. It set it's own time. So Im clueless. A bios thing perhaps?

My alumni group website received an anonymous letter with invalid (fake ) address. This alumni group site is Membership Only. Members must provide valid e-mail addresses and nobody is to send messages to the group without membership and valid acknowledged address. So, my question is, how did this happen ? How did the message get through, and how did the sender use faked address and still be able to send the message out? We want to stop this.

I have no idea why Real Player is popping up randomly. Not when I boot up from a shutdown or restart, just doing usual business on my laptop. I imagine you want me to take note when this happens, but it is really strange behavior. I thought my default player was Windows Media Player, but I could have changed that because I was having problems gettng my iPod to sync.

I want to uninstall Real Player 11, but it doesn’t show up in either Control Panel or Revo Uninstaller. There is absolutely nothing showing for Real, Real Player, Real Audio, Real Media, etc. I have a REAL Folder in C: PROGRAM FILES, which contains tons of files & folders. There are several .exe files (realplay.exe, realjbox.exe, recordingmanager.exe, fixrjb.exe, rphelperapp.exe), none of which work – nothing happens when they’re clicked… but no Uninstall file.
Does anyone know why REAL wouldn’t show up in Control Panel or Revo Uninstaller? I’m planning to just delete that C: PROGRAM FILES>REAL folder. I can’t see any reason why I shouldn’t, as long as I can revert to an earlier System restore point in case of problems.

I Was using the Sony Sound Forge 8 in a HP laptop with XP Pro and the program was working really good, but I had a problem with the HP Laptop and I have to run and bought a new computer,as a computer technician, the warehouses make me good prices in computer parts and computers,so I bought an Acer Aspire 4520 with the VISTA OS and now I dont know if it is the computer or the Vista that make the sound output real bad like when you are listening to an old cassette machine,it start slow and after a while you start listening acceptable..I don't know if it is syncronization beetween the data that is in the hard disk and the program or it's that I need a driver,I download the Realtek audio driver just in case, and installed but I still have the problem..But if I play any music in iTunes it sounds real good.

My system clock keeps changing, off by 1 hour, if it's really 6:03 it says it's 5:03. I'll change it and then the next time I reboot it may have it correct or it may have it wrong. But eventually I notice that it's back to being off by 1 hour. I am running XP Home edition with all the latest updates.

I already install the latest drivers for my graphic card, the refresh rate of the monitor its ok... Im running out of ideas and I been looking all day for a solution, you are my last chance

I am having issues with my clock. It seems that everytime I close my laptop the clock freezes in time. When it is open it also seems like it loses time. I have to continually update it to get the correct time but if I close my laptop or if my internet drops the signal, it stops working.
