What To With Bios To Properly Overclock My Cpu, Mobo, Ram And Gpu
Mar 17, 2009
I'm interested in overclocking my rig. I just built the rig from the ground-up a week ago when I got everything in from Newegg. I figured it's time to get over WoW, and start playing CoD4/5 and Crysis, which to be honest, run fine already on my computer. But for some reason I still want to give it a try. Now since this is also the first time I've even considered this, I'm completely confused as to the best way to figure out what to do in my bios to properly overclock my cpu, mobo, ram and gpu. So here are a couple of questions:
A) If I'm already running Crysis at high settings (not sure if I had the demo at the highest or just high), should I even try to overclock my rig? (I plan on installing the Adobe suite to do some web design and flash work now too.)
B) Can anyone direct me to a site where I can find the proper equations for overclocking?
C) Can anyone suggest what they consider is the best temperature monitoring program for all of the components? I downloaded the Monitoring program from Nvidia, but it isn't working properly on my machine? The program spec's on their site name my mobo and gpu as being compatible with the program, but it will not display my gpu and when I try to select it the program crashes.

Sometimes when I install drivers I get the message that my BIOS is out of date (including updates from AMD) if I go to the Phoenix site it says go to the motherboard manufacturer or run Biosagent if you use this you pay for the update but you do get this info so is it worth e-mail gateway support, using the boisagent or just leave well alone.
Info from biosagent
BIOS Type: Phoenix-Award
BIOS Date: August 18th 2006
BIOS ID: 08/18/2006-C51PVGM-GB-6A61HE1BC-00-None
BIOS OEM: C51PVGM-GB V1.0 081806 - 6.00 PG.............

I've had the OEM edition of Vista Ultimate 64 for about a year now. I'm considering a motherboard upgrade (want Phenom and wondering if there is any legitimate way to get my current Vista system running on the new motherboard. Can I pay for a new license and reactivate my existing installation using that license for instance?

Ive had 8 GB in my machine for over a year, all is fine, runs no probs. But I recently installed Everest and noticed that it reported my 8GB being 4096 of physical RAM. Opening task manager confirms this also, yet the BIOS, and the Vista welcome screen says 8GB
I read that the nforcei 680 (?) chipset doesnt use more than 4GB, yet other articles state you need to have MIMO in operation.
Well, I have a quadcore QX6850 processor which supports 64bit computing, IM running Vista Ultimate X64 and have the ASUS P5n32-e Sli motherboard with a 9800 G2 SLI card. So which is true? Do I need to remap the memory? If so how, how? I looked in the BIOS and you can change volate, timings etc but without proper guidance on that IM dead in the water.
Why is Everest/Task manager reporting 8GB as 4GB, yet the BIOS at 8GB etc?

Recently upgraded my RAM and tried to overclock my CPU. OCing the CPU (Q6600) didn't seem to be a problem but the RAM (Corsair 2x2GB TWIN2X4096-8500C5DF) won't run at 1066 at all on my mobo. I just get BSODs.
I've turned the RAM down to 1050 and this gives me one BSOD and then boots and runs ok.
I've got the Q6600 at 2.7.
I'm not happy with this so I've decided I need a mobo upgrade plus a better case .
My local PC guru recommends the Asus P5Q Pro (currently got P5N-E SLI) and I can afford that along with a Coolermaster Cosmos S.
I've looked at the P5Q Deluxe and it doesn't really seem worth the half as much again I'd have to pay. I'm happy with my current GPU (BFG 8800 GTS OC 512) although I might go for a top end ATI when they come down in price.
But basically the P5Q Pro seems to have what I need and is supoosed to be a wicked overclocker.
Does anyone have any experience with this board? I notice it only has 8 phase power rather than 16.

I have a 780i chipset motherboard, and have Vista64 installed using a Highpoint RAID controller. I'd like to upgrade to a 790i mobo, and would like to know if the 790i board will recognize my existing Windows installation. I don't expect perfect compatibility, just enough to get to the desktop (or even safe mode) so I can install the proper chipset drivers. Anyhow, anybody know if this will work?

I would like to move my current mobo and my Vista home premium to another machine. I have to do a clean install of Vista as the target machine has XP installed. I noticed that under computer properties the Product key is an OEM key. This key is different from the key that is on the back of the CD box with the Vista software . The key at the rear of the CD box is the same one as the back up key I extracted .Since the mobo and vista is move as a pair , will I run into activation problems?

I have a Sony desktop water cooled running a Pentium D 2.8 / Vista 32 Micro ATX and wanted to get the groups ideas on replacing the board / chip / memory with something that will beat the current Vista score of 4.7 for the CPU. Rest of components run at 5.9. No gaming at all I just want to be able to use my CAD and rendering programs much faster which are now using 100% CPU. Current PS is 385 watts. Planning to go to 64 bit with next CAD update.

I just acquired what seems to be a really old PCIe ATI card that I can't seem to install correctly. I went to the ATI support site and the drivers for the card just don't seem to work. Is there a specific order to follow when installing a GPU -- sorry, its been a while. It doesn't go into a PCI slot but its the bigger one, looks like a big ole' AGP card but it has a sticker right on the card that says PCIe. I can only find the drivers for a Radeon HD2600XT and I'm not sure if those are the correct drivers or not. When I first installed it everything went well and it installed correctly but the XP hardware wizard wasn't satisfied. So it doesn't fully install -- note, I do not have the original discs -- but just need the most up to date drivers.

My brother has just built a computer and can't get it working. The problem is that when he starts it he gets to the screen where he can choose to enter BIOS. 9/10 times he can't do anything from there but 1/10 times he can press delete and then it says "loading bios" but it freezes there (he waited 30 mins nothing happened). Does anyone know what the problem mihht be?

I installed this new motherboard with all my pre-existing other components and it boots fine and it can run but i keep getting a blue screen kind of often. I've heard this board can blue screen if the voltages to ram exceed 2.0 V but mine are set at 1.9 V so that should be fine. I completely formatted my drive and did a clean install of Windows Vista 32bit on a single partition. The error i'm getting is: A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. ***STOP 0x00000024 (0x001904AB, 0x93c23B90, 0x93c2388C, 0x8994D9c4) ***Ntfs.sys - Address 8994D9C4 base at 898A7000, Datestamp 4549aceb I have seen this one a few times now. I'm confused as to what i should try next. I could get some hard disk drive scanners to look for problems and run a chkdsk or format and reinstall and reset my CMOS, again, but I feel like something else is wrong.
However, I do believe it has something to do with the HDD since its been dealing with information slower and tends to crash when i'm dealing with partitions, restarting after installing updates or programs or otherwise failing to do so or freezing (not responding) during install. I've tried safe mode but it does it there too. My HDD makes the same noise as it always did and the HDD light blinks normally. I really hope i can fix this problem without having to go out and buy a new HDD but this problem just started after I installed my new mobo so I would like to seek some outside advice for my problem.

i realize my CPU is kind of a weak link in my set up but i've had excellent results overclocking it until i moved to vista. I previously ran XP Professional SP3 and had the system overclock to 3.1Ghz with no issues. The CPU temp ran at full load around 39C. Before i upgraded to vista i set all system settings back to default did my upgrade and then proceeded to push my overclock again. No matter when i changed my settings to it would show only the 2.8Ghz for processer speed in system settings. According to my motherboard the bus speed and multiplier are set high enough to obtain the 3.1 overclock again but the system settings are showing it only at 2.8Ghz.

I am installing a new Gigabyte mobo (MA78GM-US2H) in an HP Media Center Case. The pin layout between the case & mobo is nearly the same except that the HD LED and the Power LED are reversed on the new mobo. The power switch pins are correct. The case does not have reset capability. Does it matter that the two LED pin connectors are reversed or should I attempt to change the wires coming from the case?
