View 5 RepliesI'm having trouble with the DiscCleanup in Windows Vista. When I try to open cleanmgr.exe for C: it opens for a second but closes fast when it comes to "Setup Log Files" Cleanmgr.exe worked fine for C: before a security update from windows update was installed. Is there a way to fix this?

Running Vista Home Prem32bit. Ran Disc Cleanup....several entries displayed that I have never seen in the
past;
1) Per User Archived Windows error report...
2) Per user Queued Windows Error Report....
3) System Archived Windows Error reporting....
4) System Queued Windows error Reporting....
What are these entries? The total data of all 4 almost are a full GIG of drive space. Does this data at some point automatically get deleted? Can they "all" be safely deleted? Some and if so, which ones.
I want to write my own login program. So that I can force the user to supply additional passwords in order to login to the system. Do you know if this is possible. I have seen this in the omni program for using fingerprints as passwords.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm looking to reformat my hard drive. My knowledge of computers is very basic at best, so please bear with me. When I first installed Vista, I came across continuous problems. It's been so long, so I cannot remember what exactly the problems were (something along the lines of getting stuck during Windows updating I believe). Eventually I had help from a fellow online who gave me a specific procedure in installing Vista, something like 1) install Vista from CD, 2) download a service pack onto a USB port and update your computer from that 3) turn off automatic update, etc etc. Being foolish, I did not save the step by step procedure, and now am in need of it again.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently updated my main Vista Ultimate PC with SP1 without problems but have 2 more PC's with Vista Home Premium full retail O.S. I would like to format the hard drives in each while installing Vista and wondered if I needed to install the latest Intel motherboard drivers/software before installing SP1 from a purchased stand alone disk or if I would be better off to just install Vista and then SP1 with it's built-in Intel drivers, then update them later if needed?
I am on a dial-up internet connection and don't want to download SP1 twice more! Both of these PC's have the same Intel DG965WH m-board, same DVD multi-drives, same Core2 Duo processors, same 3 GB's of DDR2 800 Mhz RAM, same nVidia 7600 GT GPU's, same IDT onboard audio. All of the above are listed on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility site as Vista Certified.

View 8 Replies View RelatedA while back in attempting to check and correct my registry of any problems I downloaded a program, RegSeeker (from Softpedia), which edited permissions and has caused great problems since. (The program has been verified as non-malicious, but clearly it doesn't do it's job). The problems started with my inability to update Skype, then Windows Updates, and now Silverlight. I need a tool that'll help resolve these permission issues / corrupt keys.
The 'Patch Registration Cleanup Tool'
simply shows "a productcode must be specified" and exits.
The 'Windows Update Reseter' (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058)
is most likely insufficient for my problem, and either way doesn't work.
The issue is not one particular key but a range of them - even taking individual keys I am unable to use RegEdit to fix the problems.
In trying to install Java 6 u18 I started getting the message. THIS ACTION ONLY VALID FOR PRODUCTS CURRENTLY INSTALLED At that point Java, which had always worked, stopped working. After reading this forum I downloaded the Windows Install Cleanup and removed the Java 6 u18 from the list of installed products.
Java does not appear in the Control Panel under Programs, the registry has no Java 6.18 remnants I can see and Java does not appear in the Windows Install Cleanup list. Yet when I re-download Java, as soon as the install starts it says

I'm having the same problem as everyone else it seems, with one exception, I can't install the proposed solution, Windows Installer CleanUp Utility 1.0. When I do and try to run it my computer tells my permission has been denied and it says there is a VBScript runtime error. I just really want to uninstall msn 9.0... it's really beginning to bother me that I can't. It's not under the program files, it's not under the removable hardware, it seems deleted from my computer, but whenever i try to reinstall it or an earlier version of msn it tells me I already have it, or a more modern version installed. How do I get rid of this blasted messenger? or, alternatively, how do I reinstall it. On a sidenote, the reason I wanted to uninstall it was that I couldn't log on. It just told me that the service was temporarily unavailable. How can I avoid that?

View 9 Replies View RelatedDisk Cleanup and Defrag. Scheduling (Vista) When I schedule Disk Cleanup, a default schedule says cleanup will be activated when I am logged on. There is another option that says cleanup can be activated when I am logged on or off, but it is grayed out, and I am having difficulty gaining access to that option.
1. So, am I to assume that Disk Cleanup will only activate when I am logged on at the time specified? However, when I schedule Defrag., there are no options.
2. So, am I to assume Defrag. will activate if I am logged on or off at a specified time? Also, the Defrag, window tells you the last time Defrag. was runned.
3. Is there a log or another window I can check to see if Defrag. was completed?
Does anyone know why Disk Cleanup will not clean the recycle bin? CCleaner cleans it just fine.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI know about powercfg -h on. It doesn't work. Disk cleanup deleted the hibernation file, now when I put that line in the command prompt it tells me: "Hibernation failed with the following error: Access is denied. The following items are preventing hibernation on this system. The system could not create the hibernation file. The specific error code is 0xc0000022."I am an admin account, running the cmd.exe as an admin. Doing this in safe mode produces a different error which I can post if you want (along the lines of a VGAsave). There are no options in the control panel remotely relating to hibernation. Is there any alternate way to enable hibernation or to get the powercfg tool to work as it is intended?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a HP laptop that is a C2D 1.86Ghz which is almost 2 years old, has 3gigs ram and the hard drive on it still had around 50gigs free. I normally set the virtual memory manually but because the machine is slowing down badly decided to put it all back to auto for a test. It appears to have helped a little so it remains on Windows automatically deciding what is best for now though the option to use it more for progs rather than background processes is chosen. I tried the other way and it seemed to slow down some programs so back to programs it is. Anyway, over time on its Vista SP1 (64 bit ultimate, BTW) it has slowed dramatically. I have:
1) Defragged, cleaned out garbage of all sorts using ccleaner and also removed old restore points and so on using Disk Cleanup.
2) Gone through registry using JV16 Power Tools 2009 and cleaned out any mistakes that were possible to remove.
3) Checked out what is starting up and uninstalled any program that I no longer used and adjusted ones I still use to only load what they need when I actually click on them to start.
4) Did an image backup of "C" drive and then deleted all partitions and formatted the drive as one partition and blank then used another machine to attach the drive to and check for any faults including bad sectors then put the image back.
5) Downloaded HWMonitor to check heat and it SOMETIMES gets up to 56C when I really am pushing it but for the most part hovers around 40C. So overheating isn't it.
I cannot get to the thermal exchanger so cannot be entirely sure but with the best inspection I could do, I could see there was nothing blocking the vents or exchange unit. I also stand the laptop on a cake stand (which is the metal wire stand thing you put cakes on to cool down) so that air flow under and around it is maximised. All those things did nix to help. So I decided to use SFC /SCANNOW and it
went through the entire process and reported that two files appeared to be a problem but couldn't be fixed because they were locked. OK, so I tried to use SFC /SCANBOOT as I used to on XP but that option doesn't exist for SFC under Vista so I cant reboot and have a windows OS file scan be performed when no file is locked. Not daunted I thought about "repair install" which *CAN* be done on my desktop Vista Business if needed with the DVD there but the laptop came with Vista Ultimate 64 bit already installed and with a restore partition on it, no disk, as usual and I cannot actually DO a repair install because of that.....
I have got Auslogics Defrag program and after each defrag I do it tells me I have a number of junk files, at present 971 sometimes its way over 1000 and I then do a disk cleanup hoping to get rid of them, but after installing another game or program of some sort, again I am told I have several junk files. I would like to know how I can get rid as it also tells me that they can slow the PC down and lessen performance, not that my PC is a slouch, far from it, but I still don't like the idea of junk files on my PC and would like for once to sort this out, as before I have never taken any notice of it, perhaps I should have, but thats me, untidy as always!
