Vista X64 Random Startup Crash...

Sep 9, 2007

Anyway, I was running Vista32 for about 6 months with no real problems. I changed to Vista64 last night so that I could start using my current 4GB of RAM and be ready for more later on. When I tried to install the files would copy to the HDD just fine, but when the PC would reboot for the first time it would crash at the "green motion bar" loading screen and restart... over... and over. I removed my extra hardware and went down to 2GB of RAM in dual channel mode and reduced timings from 4-4-4-12 to 5-5-5-18 and was able to install. I then got all updates and hadded my hardware back... no problems. I then added my other 2GB of RAM back... no problems. I then increased my timings back to the correct 4-4-4-12... no problems, or so I thought. I'm currently getting random crashes when loading Vista... same as before it will get to the "green motion bar" loading screen and either reboot or give a BSOD and force a restart. I've turned my timings down to 5-5-5-12 and it still happens... so I put them back to 4-4-4-12. I've heard that Vista x64 might have problems with 4GB of RAM on certain systems but I'm not sure how true this is. I guess I'm wondering if anyone else has heard of this and if there's any known fix for this? Maybe a beta update from MS or something? Also... once I get past this "glitch" and Vista loads... it runs rock solid with no issues. All my drivers are the latest available and signed as required. ((downloaded them all last night))

Here's my system, remember... I ran Vista32 for months without a problem on the same system.

Asus P5N32-E SLI (latest BIOS 1205)
nVidia 7900GS (not using SLI)
Corsair 4-4-4-12 DDR2 RAM *SLI Ready* (4 matched sticks of 1GB each)
Antec TruePower 650 PSU PCI-E & SLI Ready
C = 320GB SATA2 Seagate
D = 400GB SATA2 Seagate
E = 400GB SATA2 Seagate
F = 500GB SATA2 Maxtor
G = 500GB SATA2 Maxtor
H = Lite-On SATA 20x SuperMulti Burner
J = 400GB IDE Seagate (will be removed, being used for data transfer from 32bit Vista for now)I'm tempted to go back to 32bit just because of the startup crash... but then I can't access my full 4GB of RAM.... goods and bads no matter what I do.

Random Crash Sidebar And Broken

I had a random crash today while installing the program Zone Alarm. Once I rebooted everything seemed fine except the Sidebar. All the gadgets appear blank and do not function and I can't seem to find any way to fix the problem. I tried downloading a new custom gadget but it did not work either. I tried looking at the help function and here but didn't see anything that would would.

Sudden X64 Crash: PC Has Started Crashing At Apparently Random Intervals

Sep 5, 2008

My Homebuilt dual core PC has started crashing at apparently random intervals. The behaviour is this; sudden black screen, PC hard drives and fans still running, a 3-4 second interval, PC powers down, auto restart of PC, boots to 'SAFE mode' options boot screen, then reboots entirely normally when 'start my computer normally' is selected. I have scoured the error log and have found several unusual entries. I am at a major loss as to their relevance.

Windows Explorer Crash On Startup

Apr 21, 2008

At every startup now, Windows explorer gets an appcrash in module ntdll.dll. I can however start Task manager. Using TM, I can start various programs such as Firefox, Thunderbird etc. It now seems that if I maximize Task Manager, I can start Windows explorer (using TM) and WE will come up without crashing. However, if the desktop is (or rather, would be) visible upon an attempted start of WE, it will crash. When trying to start explorer using TM, the crash will be in various modules, not only ntdll.dll. So, my understanding is that WE crashes upon startup because of something that is visible on the desktop. But there are only various icons, and nothing special.

Crash Or Slow Down Vista It Usually Gets Documented In Vista's Error Logs

Jun 13, 2008

The often heard recurring theme spread by no nothing trolls and fanboys is if Vista isn't working right, it must be something you did rather than owning up to how badly Vista is designed once you start poking around and SEE how badly implemented it is. Much of the frustration with Vista comes from it's applets crashing or acting up for no apparent reason. Since these applets are INTERNAL and built-in as part of Vista's core the often heard excuse it's some third party driver, a hardware problem or other software you installed is proven to be bogus.

When something happens to either crash or slow down Vista it usually gets documented in Vista's Error Logs. However like most everything else Microsoft does, the logs are of little actual value other than pointing to how poorly designed and broken Vista really is.

To illustrate how broken Vista is, here's my experience this morning. As usual I started my day going to Google (my default home page) and clicking on News to see what the headlines were. Microsoft's browser hung. Waiting for it to respond, after 90 seconds I gave up and sure enough was treated to the usual BS asking if you want to wait longer or shut it down. I shut IE7 down. Next I went to Event Viewer......

Vista Startup: After Two Minutes I Get The Welcome Screen. Then The Monitor Goes Black For A Full Two Minutes Before Continuing The Startup Process

Mar 23, 2008

I have just puchased my first Windows Vista computer - an HP laptop. I have purchased at leat five laptops since 2000 so I am familiar with setup and
comfortable with installations etc. I have three questions here.

1. My last computer had Windows XP and an 80 gb hard drive with 70 gb full - After copying the data only (55 GB) to my new 250 gb hard drive I have only 107 GB remaining of the 222 GB C drive partition. I have not yet added many programs. That tells me that Vista must be using 50-60 GB or more of the drive. Can that be correct?

2. My new computer takes 5-6 minutes to start up. After two minutes I get the welcome screen. Then the monitor goes black for a full two minutes before continuing the startup process. Is this normal for Vista?

3. Occasionally the monitor goes dark for a few seconds and a window pops up saying the display driver has failed but is back. Is this normal?

I certainly gained no speed with this new computer. There are many things I like about Vista. Since I have no previous experience with owning it I am trying to sort out if this computer is a lemon that should be returned or if I should just put up with the downside.

Vista Crash By Ndiswan.sys

Aug 12, 2009

When I sleep Vista a 2nd time, this always eventually results in a crash by ndiswan.sys: A device object has been blocking an Irp for too long a time I hope this can be resolved!
May be I should do something with the verifier tool to analyze it more?

What happens the 2nd time I click sleep:
- The screen turns dark as usual
- Vista is roaring my hard drive for a bit
- This ends in a killing silence (normally in a shut down )
- just wait for 5 mins or something
- a blue screen presents itself (not sure)
- the computer reboots automatically (because default config tells
that it may reboot directly after a bluescreen)

When rebooted Vista reports that the system ended unexpectedly. I ran windbg several times on the crash dumps with the !analyze -v cmd, and every time the report is more or less the same:.....

Vista Aero Crash On ASUS M51 Series

May 12, 2010

I got an ASUS M51 laptop 2 years ago with Vista Ultimate 32. I felt pretty good about the machine, until I connected a second LCD monitor with DVI connection. Connecting with VGA port had no crash problem, but I prefer using DVI with a HDMI/DVI cable. Using non-Aero theme had no problem.

Occasionally the system reported graphic card driver crashed and tried to recover. Sometimes the system recovered, more often not, leading to total crashing of Windows.

Surely I did the following:

1. Reinstall the latest graphic drivers.

2. Reinstall the latest ASUS splendid utilities.

3. Keep Windows patches updated.

4. Install and uninstall some Windows hot fixes, as suggested by some newsgroups' posts.

5. Many other methods.

None worked. So I gave up Aero for almost a year. Until I read a post when searching for answer about mysterious disappearing of desktop icons when the desktop is refreshing sometimes. The post had the finger pointed to Power4Gear eXtreme. For some reasons, the default settings of Miscellaneous power settings of the Quite Office profile will hide desktop icons. After changing the setting to No, the desktop icons stay still forever. And the Windows graphic driver crashing occurred less often.

As the crashing still happened, so I uninstalled ASUS Splendid utilities. And crashing of graphic driver never come back.

Vista X64 Update Loop At Startup

Mar 26, 2009

My laptop, Toshiba model M305D, has been down about 6 days. I went to microsoft technical, put in a request but got no reply. This is the first problem I've had since buying the laptop new August, 2008. It has an AMD 64 bit processor and runs Vista home premium 64 bit. It has been kept up-to-date with windows update.

THE PROBLEM: The last time it was receiving updates it became stuck in a loop. It was processing update stage 3 of 3 at the 96% complete point when it restarted the computer to complete installation. Only, it keeps restarting and going through this update install process. It does this over and over.

I used the F8 on startup method to get to a help screen hoping to get into the safe mode. I got to the help screen.

The computer will not go into the "safe mode" using any of the choices presented on this screen, but instead goes right back to update screens described above when one of the choices is selected. I had hoped to get access to restore but could not.

How can I get past this to get back up and running?

Speed Of Vista: 25 Minute Startup

Nov 3, 2009

if anyone has seen my previous threads you might have seen me complaining about the speed of vista. now i have a powerful PC and i JUST reinstalled vista less than one month ago and AGAIN its loading so incredibly slow its painful and im about to cry. i have literally less than 20 programs installed on a 500 GB HDD and it boots up as slow as a win '98 20 mhz cpu computer. i swear, ive never been more confused in my life. i havent reinstalled or de-installed anything like at all, i upgraded to SP2 i tried to a system restore and of course, it failed. for the past week im literally finding myself going to eat dinner and then coming down to see that my startup programs are just finihsing after 30 minutes of initial boot. once they are all loaded the pc works like a charm and nothing goes wrong. if you say i have "too many startup programs" iwill laugh because i litteraly have 4 startup programs. yes ive tried no startup programs but it doesnt help WHATSOEVER. im just onwdering how windows can corrupt files like by itself. no its not a virus. i ve checked with over 4 diferent anti viruses.

This happens to me every morning when I turn my computer on after having it off all night.

I turn on my computer. Windows loads then I get a message (as soon as windows is done loading all up) that "Windows will be shutting down in less than a minute."

So it shuts down, restarts, and when it gets back on my User Account Control is turned off. So I turn User Account Control back on and it's fine until the next morning. Sometimes, but not often it will do this after my computer has been Hibernating for a while.

Random Lockups

Apr 9, 2008

I have an HP dv9000 laptop running Vista premium SP1. Both before and after installation of the service pack I have been getting occasional complete lockups, with the mouse, and keyboard both inactive and the disk access light off. The only way out is the power button. The system is about six months old, has no malware on it, has the latest BIOS installed and passes memtest. I have turned off folder indexing, updated all drivers from the manufacturer and, except for this issue, the system runs well and fast.

The lockups might occur once every couple of weeks --- usually, but not always, when surfing. I have not been able to reproduce the problem and it does appear to be truly random. Does anyone have any ideas what I might try next. The only other thing that happens is that when press the slash key I get his character:? or this one in upper case:? My keyboard is set to English.

and

Display driver "nvlddmkm" has stopped working.

Then the computer flickers in and out and I am forced to restart the computer manualy.

Thins I've tried is that I formated my main "C" harddrive and setup all newest drivers etc.

That didn't fix this.

Another thing I thought of is that the card was overheating, well it has a custom Thermal Right cooler and a 120mm fan but I still tried and opened up the case.

That didn't have any effect.

This is a strange problem because I am able to run tests such as 3d mark -Vantage, 06, 05 and 03 without any crashes..
