I had a random crash today while installing the program Zone Alarm. Once I rebooted everything seemed fine except the Sidebar. All the gadgets appear blank and do not function and I can't seem to find any way to fix the problem. I tried downloading a new custom gadget but it did not work either. I tried looking at the help function and here but didn't see anything that would would.
View 5 RepliesToday I started experiencing some strange problems with Vista's sidebar. I've never had this problem before and I've spent hours trying to fix the problem. Basically the problem I'm having looks something like this:
I've just dragged a few of the default gadgets to the sidebar to show you the problem I'm having. The Weather gadget seems to be the only one that is functioning correctly. I also cannot install user created gadgets from gallery.live.com.
I've already tried the many different combinations of re-registering various DLL files that I've seen around on the Internet but this hasn't made a difference. Could this be a problem with Java or XML? Is there a way of totally reinstalling the Vista Sidebar without having to a) do a System Restore or b) create a Vista installation disk to do a repair with?
Anyway, I was running Vista32 for about 6 months with no real problems. I changed to Vista64 last night so that I could start using my current 4GB of RAM and be ready for more later on. When I tried to install the files would copy to the HDD just fine, but when the PC would reboot for the first time it would crash at the "green motion bar" loading screen and restart... over... and over. I removed my extra hardware and went down to 2GB of RAM in dual channel mode and reduced timings from 4-4-4-12 to 5-5-5-18 and was able to install. I then got all updates and hadded my hardware back... no problems. I then added my other 2GB of RAM back... no problems. I then increased my timings back to the correct 4-4-4-12... no problems, or so I thought. I'm currently getting random crashes when loading Vista... same as before it will get to the "green motion bar" loading screen and either reboot or give a BSOD and force a restart. I've turned my timings down to 5-5-5-12 and it still happens... so I put them back to 4-4-4-12. I've heard that Vista x64 might have problems with 4GB of RAM on certain systems but I'm not sure how true this is. I guess I'm wondering if anyone else has heard of this and if there's any known fix for this? Maybe a beta update from MS or something? Also... once I get past this "glitch" and Vista loads... it runs rock solid with no issues. All my drivers are the latest available and signed as required. ((downloaded them all last night))

My Homebuilt dual core PC has started crashing at apparently random intervals. The behaviour is this; sudden black screen, PC hard drives and fans still running, a 3-4 second interval, PC powers down, auto restart of PC, boots to 'SAFE mode' options boot screen, then reboots entirely normally when 'start my computer normally' is selected. I have scoured the error log and have found several unusual entries. I am at a major loss as to their relevance.

Windwos Explorer cut and paste fails.
1) will not do it.
2) leaves empty folders behind.
Cut and paste to folder of same name always fails one way or another.
Says save folder so I check the do i anyway box and it seems to run but
really does not.
Never had this problem in XP.
From D: to C: or from Pen Drive to C: etc.
And it is very slow doing any kind of copy.
A utilit I have does 60 Bytes / sec.
WE does < 1MByte/Sec.
Very poor performamce through WE.
What can Ido to fix this.

I was just wondering if it was possible for the computer to boot with a broken motherboard ...
I thought without the motherboard you wouldnt even be able to get to the BIOS ... is this right?
i know this might just be a minor issue but im can't figure out why my icons are not showing up for some "files" like Adobe Extention Packages (.mxp) and (.html, .htm) and such not sure if i have others that are missing really haven't looked at all of them just yet but i can't figure out how to fix that. I am new to the whole x64 Vista so im not sure how it works when it comes to regedit and stuff like that if it's the same as 32 bit.
Additionally i have installed IconPackager by Stardock to try and fix it, no luck. Then i tried Microangelo On Display and that didn't work either. Not sure what else to do. Futhermore i have tried changeing the registry key to the default icon like in Vista 32 bit under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOThtmlfileDefaultIcon and setting the Default Value to "1%" and again that didn't work either. So let's just say i don't know where to go from there.
does anyone no how to fix the broken link for my music in the the start menu when i click it does nowt and when i right click it i get the options __copy__Rename and properties. but when i click properties its empty ,ive tried doing it through reg edit by going to the user shell folders but i see no my music registry to modify.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThis is the 3rd spacebar I have ordered. I realize there is that metal thing and where it goes in the spacebar. I checked as before to see that the metal thing was secure in the plastic holders. It was (as I thought before), and I proceeded carefully to put the spacebar back in (with the metal thing towards the back forming an upside down U). When I did, once again, the metal piece dislodged itself from inside the keyboard and I put it back, however, it's not firmy in the grooves as it was. It works, but feels different than all my other keys and sometimes, and it is not working smoothly. So now I have 3 spacebars with the metal bar. Previously, I taped it so it would not move and it worked, just not perfectly.

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy copy of System Restore Services on Vista Enterprise SP2 is BROKEN.This is presumabably because of dual boot with a Windows XP problem. I have fixed the XP registry to exclude Volumes it should not overwrite. I have tried turning System Restore off. That did not fix the problem. So I turned it back on. Now I am trying to "scrub" the system so that I can initialize a new System Restore Point and get on with life. But I would prefer not reinstalling everything which would take over a week.
When I use the system protection option, the "search for restore points option'hangs. The create system restore point button is grayed out. Automatic updates and those installs using Wise Installer stall and do not complete.Apparently something has locked the function. If you have a clue as to how to untie this knot.
my sisters HijackThis log >O10- Broken Internet access because of provider LSP 'c:windowssystem32wshbth.dll' missing. This appeared after she re-installed her OS. She has Vista Home Premium, SP2, IE8 and Firefox. Pretty much the same that I have but on a Dell laptop. She has no issues with her computer connecting nor running. View 7 Replies View RelatedThis morning I have been receiving email in my inbox, but my outbox appears to be broken. Outgoing mail piles up and whenever I try to send it I get an error message. I can manually delete messages out of the outbox, so it is not the problems with "stuck" outgoing messages (although I did experience that problem a few months ago).

I try to open network connections and instead explorer totally locks up and unable to to anything. Cannot connect to internet. Says "server communication failed" when I mouse over the network icon on toolbar. Was forced to restore to pre-SP1 and everything is fine again

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy son has managed to break Vista by trying to change the SID and rendering all the user accounts except a guest account account unusable. After many hours of searching i seem to find that the only solution is to reinstall Vista. I cannot log into any dministrator account to gain access to or take possession of the files from the inaccessible accounts that are still on the hard drive but i don't want to lose them as a result of einstalling. I have come up with a plan but have now idea if it will work. If i re-size and move the partition with the busted OS on and reinstall vista on the new partition i will create, will i be able to access the moved partition, take ownership of the files on it from my shiny new administrators account and copy them to the new partition. If anyone has a clue whether this will work please tell me or if there is another solution, i really don't want to lose the photos i hadn't yet managed to back up.
View 9 Replies View RelatedBackup is broken and doesn't offer any settings for advanced users. It returned only 0800xxxx errors on me, no matter what I tried (sheduled backup, fresh backup, etc). My filesystem was OK, and I didn't have any extra users (and removed them, leaving some registry settings) on the system (which was a known problem).
- My RAID1 kept failing (and rebuilding). To be honest: This could be an ASUS P5K-E problem (my motherboard), I am not sure.
- System freezes. Power down was the only way out. (Which means a RAID1 rebuild)
- When I run Windows Update, I see an update for my LANdriver. If I try to install it, my system freezes. This is a driver delivered via.....

I am now alomost ready to go postal. Just found that a test email I sent from Hotmail came through OK, but one from my work email again caused the above error.
Some users that upgraded to Internet Explorer 8 experience issues with tabs not working properly or taking a very long time to load. It seems for most users the issue can be attributed to a problem with actxprxy.dll not installing properly during the upgrade. If you have a similar problem with IE8, fixing the issue is as simple as a running one command.
Just open up an administrative level command prompt and type in regsvr32 actxprxy.dll and hit Enter. Reboot your computer and your tab issue should be resolved....
I can't connect to the cable modem at all. There is just no way to get it working for whatever weird reason. I don't get assigned any gateway, I don't get any IP (so it rewerts to a funky 169.whatever adress). Now, I used to have this exact cable modem connected to my computer, with internet, 2 days ago. I would share internet trough the other ethernet port that I didn't use to another computer, and everything would work. Then we just had our internet crap on ourself the other day. And it was my computer that just felt like killing the internet. Ever since: My computer wont connect to the internet at all, it wont even communicate and get ip from the cable modem.
And before I get any questions on it: Took the cable from the cable modem, and jerked it into the other computer, and presto, I'm talking to you guys. No problems at all, and it worked instantly. Didn't even have to reset or restart or configure anything on the other one. Sadly the other computer only has 1 Ethernet port, and the cable modem wont work with any routers inbetween, and also only has 1 Ethernet port on it (yay for stupid hardware *sigh*). So with that and that it working not 2 days ago, makes me really wonder what is going on.............
I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate x64 and upgraded my CPU to an E8400 from a 6400 Core 2 Duo. This increased the bus speed to 1333 Mhz. It appears that it has broken both WMP and WMC. Is there any way to repair this without reinstalling Windows Vista?
View 9 Replies View RelatedThis is about my fifth build, and it went great: loaded up the OS and updated all drivers (using only 2 GB RAM), started (cautiously) loading up all my software, taking care to only load software that had 64 bit driver support, as far as I could tell. I am a graphic designer and creative director, so I use Adobe CS3 and Office and game a little. Use Skype very frequently. First off, SoundBlaster had no 64 bit support (I have never had much confident in Creative), so I simply took out the card and thought I might wait or scratch it.
More importantly, the system freezes. Hangs. Stalls, what-have-you. Just stops and needs a hard reboot. Any sounds playing at the time would stutter like a broken cd. I tried many things and am not overclocking. Eventually, needing to get work done, I simply figured there wasn't enough 64 bit driver support and yesterday fresh installed the 32 bit Vista using the alternate DVD that came in the package. Unfortunately, the system is behaving in exactly the same way.
This happens to me every morning when I turn my computer on after having it off all night.
I turn on my computer. Windows loads then I get a message (as soon as windows is done loading all up) that "Windows will be shutting down in less than a minute."
So it shuts down, restarts, and when it gets back on my User Account Control is turned off. So I turn User Account Control back on and it's fine until the next morning. Sometimes, but not often it will do this after my computer has been Hibernating for a while.
My computer just powers off wothout warning sometimes then won't turn on again for several minutes. The computer hasn't been overheating or even under heavy load when it happens. Which piece of hardware is the cause of my trouble so that I can replace it? The motherboard is an ABIT IS7, the PSU is a Coolmax 450W, and the CPU is a 2.8GHz P4 Northwood. Or is the problem with something else?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an HP dv9000 laptop running Vista premium SP1. Both before and after installation of the service pack I have been getting occasional complete lockups, with the mouse, and keyboard both inactive and the disk access light off. The only way out is the power button. The system is about six months old, has no malware on it, has the latest BIOS installed and passes memtest. I have turned off folder indexing, updated all drivers from the manufacturer and, except for this issue, the system runs well and fast.
The lockups might occur once every couple of weeks --- usually, but not always, when surfing. I have not been able to reproduce the problem and it does appear to be truly random. Does anyone have any ideas what I might try next. The only other thing that happens is that when press the slash key I get his character:? or this one in upper case:? My keyboard is set to English.
I leave my desk top on all the time and it works fines. Randomly (weeks can go by) while using it, it just shuts down. I will hit the power button it reboots and it goes directly to where it was when it shutdown and will not have lost anything. Some times I can here it reboot all by itself when I am not even using it. Can anyone tell me what this might be
View 4 Replies View Relatedmy computer hangs and doesn't came back even after 2 hours and it happens when i'm doing anything. it has hung twice just tring to write this question it hangs even when the computer is idle. and the only solution that works so far is to hit the reset button. if it helps here are my spec for my computer: Q6600, p35c-ds3r, gigabyte 8800gts, 4x kingston 1066MHz 1gig RAM, seagate 7200rpm 750GB hard drive. also have 3 fans keeping to cool 1 for CPU + 2 for case, none are overclocked.

But ever since then, it is crashing/freezing/hanging randomly. I thought it might have more infections so I scanned with a-squared, malwarebytes and sophosrootkit: no infection was found.
