Why Has My Laptop Slowed Down?

Aug 20, 2009

i haven't mentioned this since i have reinstalled vista, but i have noticed that, since then, the windows experience index scores have gone down 1 or 2 points. i have installed all the latest drivers using drivermax but little performance has been improved. and it seems that the gaming graphics have let me down on wei. also, the second lowest score on wei is the aero performance. it is 4.0 on the aero because i have recently changed the theme to windows classic for better performance. i have changed back to aero, and haven't bothered the update the wei score. here is a snip of the wei score right now-. i remember the score being up in the 5's but now, it is down. just wondering if it was to do with reinstalling vista by any chance? i'm not asking for a solution-but you can give me one if u can- just want to know what is causing the laggyness. look at my system specs to see why i think my computer should have better performance.

Suddenly Slowed Down

Jul 25, 2009

My computer was running perfectly fine about a week ago,but now its become 100% slower! I got Norton Internet Security 2009 and Spyware Doctor and used them both to scan my computer, solved a few viruses and that was it. I have no new programs installed,in fact, I'd removed some programs. (except for NIS 2009/Spyware Doctor(It was also slow before I got those)) It was still slow...it takes literally about a minute to open programs and about 5 minutes just to start up. Normally it would take 1-2 seconds to open programs and 2 minutes to start up. I really have no clue what to do right now and this is really pissing me off right now!

Slowed Down, How To Speed Up?

Mar 6, 2010

I have a trusty laptop running Vista Ultimate with 2 Gb RAM. When I first got it it ran programmes like Mozilla Firefox and the Office Suite rapidly, opening the apps quickly when required. Over time programmes began to slow down upon opening. I also tried the new Windows 7 which was OK but had a few drawbacks. So I bit the bullet and re-set my machine back to how it was when it was new.

Reloaded my apps and data files, speed returned. Now it's slowing up again after only 4 months. do these proprietary programs like Norton etc actually clean up the computer and restore its trusty speed in opening apps? If so, which one have you found to be the best in practice?

Vista File Slowed To A Crawl

Apr 13, 2009

im a newbie to these forums and im a very inexperienced person with computers but here is my problem. My laptop became infected with trojans and spyware because of a doggy download which opened a hole for this stuff to spread. That rouge software winPc defender installed itself onto my computer. Although I was able to get rid of that pretty quickly and other stuff as well (using norton360, spybot and spyware doctor) that annoying "Insecure Internet Activity. Threat Of Virus Attack" message kept coming up, I also found that whilst using google i would be redirected to pages not relevant to what a had search for (such as blinkx or myspace video)

Using smitfraudfix I was able to remove that message But since I have used smitfraudfix my laptop has been running very slowly and has been crashing and failing seemingly at random. Whenever i try a google search on IE7 it still directs me to blinx and other places that I DID NOT type into the search engine and so I began to lose patience and I downloaded firefox3. Despite countless scans and checks nothing ever comes up so I suspect some spyware or malware may have sneaked its way undereath so that it is virtually impossible to detect.

Fast Machine Is Slowed Down By Virtual Memory.

Jun 22, 2009

Running Vista Ultimate 64-bit on M6400 notebook with 16GB RAM.

With 16GB RAM does Vista really need any virtual memory?

My quad core, 16GB RAM notebook would be faster without hard drive access due to virtual memory.

Can I turm off virtual memory or set it to some very low value (possibly 0)?

My preference is to use the 16GB RAM and should that be insufficient then I decide which programs to close. I don't want Vista using 4GB, or 6GB RAM, etc., and continually writing/reading to HD which slows things down and does not make full use of the physical RAM present.

Upgrading To Vista 64 Bit

Jun 27, 2008

According to the vista pages on the microsoft site, you cannot "upgrade" from
a 32bit XP to a 64bit vista, and must do a clean install, but it is ambiguous
as to what upgrade means. Does this mean that an original install version
(much more expensive) must be purchased, or can the upgrade version be used
on a clean hard drive as long as the XP key or whatever is put in to make it
recognize that you are upgrading?

Upgrading To Win7 From

I am running an OEM copy of Vista Ultimate x64. By OEM, I mean I bought the disc that OEM's use to install windows onto a ready built machine. Anyway, I'm eligible to upgrade straight to Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

My questions are, once I have upgraded to Win 7 will it be using a new Product Key? And would I be able to do a clean install of Vista Ultimate on another PC and use the original product key?

Upgrading From XP Professional X64 To 32?

Apr 8, 2008

I haven't been able to find any information on this so here it goes. I recently bought a computer with xp pro x64 and was wondering if it is possible to upgrade it to vista 32 bit with a standard vista home basic (or premium, whatever) upgrade version. The reason for this is I intended this computer to be used for home recording projects and Pro Tools (recording program) does not support xp x64 or vista x64, and it doesn't look like it will any time soon. So these are my questions:

-Will I need to do a clean install and still be able to use a vista upgrade version?
-Will I have to get a full new version of vista?
-Is it even possible?

Upgrading Is Disabled

Feb 7, 2009

I have just bought a HP notebook which has Vista Home premium 32bit O/S with Service pack 1. I tried upgrading this to Vista Ultimate with the Upgrade DVD. After entering the product key, I opted for the upgrade, after a while a message came up saying that the upgrading is disabled. I read somewhere that this trouble might have been caused by SP 1. So, one has to delete the SP1 and then upgrade. I looked into the add/remove programmes in the control panel, but there is no SP1 in the list.

Three Options For Upgrading From To Windows 7

Dec 26, 2008

Back in November, I explored the number of editions of Windows 7 that Microsoft was working on. While the company has not officially given a list yet, it was clear that Windows 7 Enterprise Edition and Windows 7 Ultimate Edition were definitely coming. Furthermore, there was an obvious avoidance of naming a Windows 7 Business Edition, though there was a mention of a Windows 7 Small Business Edition. While doing a little more digging, I stumbled on the following upgrade paths for Windows Vista to Windows 7. These are not confirmed, but I am told they are what Microsoft is currently considering: Windows Vista Home Premium Edition => Windows 7 Home Premium Edition Windows Vista Business Edition => Windows 7 Professional Edition Windows Vista Ultimate Edition => Windows 7 Ultimate Edition Full Story: Rumor: three options for upgrading from Vista to Windows 7

Upgrading Home Premium To SP1

May 17, 2008

I suddenly notice a lot of references to SP1 for Vista. I have stopped updates on my Vista Home Premium, after it killed my WinMail. I uninstalled upto KB 933928, and disabled updates. It is working fine, but I found AVG offering me AVG 8.0, which refused to install saying my Vista is not updated ( after downloading 80MB twice !! !&*()^%$$). How do I get to SP1? Just install all updates from MS? Will my WinMail survive? Or will I be forced to shift to XP Outlook? There is a lot of flak meant for Vista, but my system is very stable ( touch wood and everything else)
Request MVP advice.

Is SP1 And Other Updates Necessary Before Upgrading To Windows 7?

Nov 17, 2009

Is Vista SP1 necessary or recommandable before upgrading to Windows 7? Many people these days is upgrading from Windows Vista preinstalled on the PC to Windows 7. In case of a complete recovery it's necessary to reinstall Windows Vista and then upgrade to Windows 7 (if you have bought an upgrade and not a complete Windows 7 version).

Yesterday I did a complete recovery and did a reinstallation of Vista Premium. After installation of Windows Vista I have so far done approximately 100 Windows Vista updates and is now continuing with SP1.

I have a Windows7 upgrade and plan to upgrade Windows Vista to Windows 7. Could I had saved time upgrading directly from Windows Vista in the original edition without all the other updates before upgrading to Windows 7, or was, and is it correct to take this detour?
