I'm running Vista Sp1 and am frequently using VPN connections to our clients. All of a sudden, I'm unable to create a VPN connection. If I look in Event Viewer under administrative events, I read the following message: 'The initial Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol request could not be successfully sent to the server. This can be due to network connectivity issues or certificate (trust) issues. The detailed error message is provided below. Correct the problem and try again. The certificate's CN name does not match the passed value.
Set up a VPN on my laptop 2 moths ago and it worked fine. Today I cannot find it. Its gone from Connect To and its not in Manager Network Connections. I cant create a new one with the same name because the computer tells me it exists and if I create a new connection it does not appear anywhere either.
I have a sony vaio vgn fw21m laptop with vista home premium 32. Each time i try to create a new network connection (connect to the internet - bradband(pppoe)I enter the Username and Password) i get: "The wizard cannot create the connection". I was searching the forums over and over and I cant find nothing useful. There is no problem with my ISP (optical) (on an other laptop runing winXP I can connect with no problems). The funny thing is that I was able to connect to this ISP with no problems, but I lost the conection shortcut after a vista system restore (there was a keyboard problem, no biggy). I also can connect to another ISP (on another location) that does not require a login/password I just have to eneble the right profile. What I can deduct is, that it is probably a problem directly connectet to vista network and sharing center. I alredy reinstaled the ethrnet driver and vaio smart network.
I'm trying to partition drive C but it won't let me. New laptop is Toshiba Satellite and had the store configure it for me since I'm new to Vista.
1. Through Disk Management, I shrink drive C and now have an unallocated space of 51G.
2. From the unallocated space, I create a new simple volume. It goes through the Wizard, but then I get the following error message: "The attempted operation is invalid. Either the parameters specified are invalid or the operation cannot be completed on the selected object."
3. The contour of the unallocated space is highlighted in black instead of green. Is that an indication of something? And shouldn't it say: Free space instead of unallocated? Additional info:.....

Disk 1 is empty and I have successfully created 3 partions on this drive. According to Vista's Disk Management tool, Disk 0 contains three partitions. The first and last are both EISA Configuration partitions and can't be seen through Windows Explorer. The 2nd (middle) partition is the C: partition on which Vista is installed.
I want to install Windows 7 RC 64bit in a dual boot configuration, so I used Disk Manager to shrink the C: partition and then create a new 100gb partition. I assigned it the drive letter B: (there are no floppy drives on the laptop). The new B: partition is visible, along with the original C: partition through Windows Explorer, until I reboot the laptop. The B: partition then disappears and Windows Explorer can no longer see it, however Disk Management shows it is still there but it no longer has a drive letter and is now an EISA Configuration partition. I thought this issue might be caused by the choice of drive letter so I tried again using a different letter (F: ). Each time the drive is only visible to Windows Explorer until the laptop is rebooted. I've also tried using a different partition management tool (Partition Wizard) but it makes no difference. I've tried creating the partition as logical and primary but to no avail. explain Why can't I create a visible partition on my "O/S" drive?
I am having printing problem on my Vista business machine. I have a printer server (Windows 2003 server Domain Controller), and the new Vista is joind to domain as a standard user. When I add shared printers to the Vista, it prints out without problem. Problem is, however, after I restart the Vista, I am getting this error messages everytime I tried to print test pages. "Test page failed to print. Unable to create a print job".
Vista 64bit has been running really well on my desktop after a clean install in March. Suddenly, Windows update is failing to install, because it can't create a systen restore point. When I try to create one in System Restore, manually, it fails also, citing the shadow file timeout, or some such.....I am worried, because I can't use backup, either! Anyone know what's going on?
when i tried to create a restore point an error message is being displayed. it says " could not create the scheduled task for the following reason task image is corrupt or has been tampered with (0x80041321)" what does it mean. i am running on vista ultimate x64

what i did was under system properties page, i clicked system protection tab on the left side checked the boxes( all system drives ie hard disk drives) and clicked apply then the message i described was popping out and when clicked create also the same message is being displayed.
I have been using Windows Mail for my Yahoo addresses and by right clicking on the W.M. icon in the programme list above the start button I put a shortcut on to the desktop that has been working very well. Today I have combined Yahoo and Hotmail addresses under the WLM umbrella. But I cannot find how to make a shortcut. Nowhere can I find the relevant WLM icon to make a shortcut from. Obviously I am missing something, somewhere, but what is it?
My Windows Vista Enterprise has a serious problem. It is unable to find, delete, or create any system restore points. I have not found a way to re-initialize the system restore point process.
I am currently running Vista home on my main PC. I have a router plugged into it. The router is working fine (my son's laptop accesses wirelessly, and I am able to hit the net using a virtual PC that I have set up on it.) However, my main computer is not recognizing the router and is returning an APIPA address when I run ipconfig. I have tried to ping the router but am not able to hit it. I have replaced the cable (even though I do not think that is the issue as I am able to access via the virtual PC). I am unable to restore any connection.
I am unable to connect to any wireless network. When diagnosing why i cant connect, i am simply told 'you are unable to connect'. additionally, when directly connecting through a cable, I still cannot use internet, however my AOL instant messenger will work fine. I have tried restarting my computer and router with no success. All settings have been set to match my home network. I am lost as to what the problem could be.
I've just purchased a new PC, running Vista Home Premium, with a built- in PCI Wireless adapter, but am unable to connect to the internet. I have emailed my supplier's technical support, but I don't think the problem is straightforward, nor do I know whether it is a hardware of software issue, so I thought I'd try elsewhere in the meantime.
The symptons are as follows: I have an old Netgear DG824M wireless router/ADSL modem. I have a laptop running Vista Home Premium. This was able to connect to the router and hence to the internet straight away with virtually no configuration - just entered the WEP key and it all worked. This has recently been upgraded to SP1, and still works okay. I have my old desktop running XP. This has no connection problems. The new PC has an Asus WL-138GE (or 138G V2 - not sure which) PCI adapter. Initially, it was identified as a Broadcom adapter. The new PC had problems right from the start connecting to the router and the internet. Most of the time, it appears to be unable to get a DHCP address. The signal strength is always excellent, and it correctly identifies the router as a Netgear DG824M. When it does manage to connect to the internet, the connection only seems to last a few seconds, or is extremely slow. I cannot connect to the router at all using the new PC. It comes up with the username and password very quickly, accepts that, but then seems to hang loading the home page. I usually give up after about 5 or 10 minutes. When connected, I can ping the router and I can also ping websites, even though I don't seem to be able to connect to them using IE. I have no antivirus running, and the only firewall software is windows firewall
I have tried the following: Checking DHCP client service running, Disable WEP, Disable Windows Firewall, I upgraded the wireless driver by downloading one from Asus. It now recognises the adapter as an Asus 802.11g Network Adapter (driver c:windowssystem32driversBCMWL664.SyS, Broadcom 4.102.15.56), but this doesn't seem to have made any difference. I deleted the adapter and let it recreate itself. It loaded up the same drivers. I've removed IPv6 ,I've set up the PC with a static IP address (192.168.0.51), set up the router as the gateway, and my ISP's DNS servers as the DNS servers. I added an =93ArpRetryCount=94 DWORD key to the registry as recommended somewhere. I made some further registry changes as recommended by Microsoft KB 928233. I reset TCP/IP and Winsock using netsh as administrator. I tried "netsh interface tcp set global rss=3Ddisabled autotuninglevel=3Ddisabled" None of these changes seem to have made any difference, and I've run out of things to try!

I have been on the phone with my service provider and they have checked everything on their end and said that it is a problem with Microsoft. I have also, after reviewing other posts, changed my port from 25 to 80 & 587 and neither have fixed the problem. I have also uninstalled my antivirus program. Still nothing.

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 (system specs: laptop 2.1 Ghz core 2 duo, 4 gb RAM, 500gb hd (about half full) nvidia 8400M GS, Avira Premium Security Suite). I have had the computer for about a year running fine with 1 main admin account. Now when I need to create an account for another user I cannot create one, either admin or standard. When I create it, using either the control panel or command prompt, it creates the user picture, making the account visible on the control panel user accounts screen, and on logon screen. However, when trying to log into the new account I am greeted with the error "User profile service failed on logon. User profile cannot be loaded." The standard fix for this from various forums is to edit the registry key of the account. However, on going to regedit I see that no key even exists for the account. On further investigation I discover that no user files have been created either. I attempted a system restore, but discovered that all my past restore points were gone, and intruigingly, the computer had stopped createing 24 hour checkpoints. I cannot say for definite whether it was this issue or another one that caused system restore to mess up, as I don't check my system restore all that often. Either way, system restore is not an option. There have been mentions of a full Vista reinstall, though if at all possible I would like to avoid this.
I am having problems with creating shortcuts on my desktop. when i select send to desktop (create shortcut) it comes up with the error. Windows could create the shortcut. Check to see if the disc is full.I have over 180 GB free space left. To get things to the desktop i can drag it into the tab section next to the start icon, and then drag onto desktop.But when i do this i am always required to give permission and it creates two desktop icons.i have been having problems with my catalyst control centre but i dont think they are related.
When I install Vista, it wants to force me to create a local account, and it won't let me create one called Administrator, becuase the name is already used (thus the Administrator account exists). I don't want to create some dummy account just just to log in to join the domain. How do I get past the "Choose a user name and picture" screen and log in as Administrator so I can just install the network drivers and join my domain?

I am unable to connect my new wireless lappy to my local (Talk Talk broadband) connection I use for my desktop. Is Vista wireless compatible with Talk Talk broadband? Doesn't seem to be aware of that connection... Also where do I obtain key 'security key or passphrase'
my computer is not holding it's internet connection, even when i refresh it just wont reconnect and i end up having to restart and then the connection is fine. I'm running Vista Home Premium, Defender, ZoneAlarm (free) and Avast (free). Broadband connection. is there anyway to secure the connection permanently (which it should be) Have i, a setting wrong? At all times my internet icon says i am fully connected?
I am having the worst problems connecting using a cable connection, which I need because as I am in Europe at the moment, many sites or private homes are not equipped with wireless. Now, when I connect with cable, everything seems to be working fine, the Toshiba connectivity doctor tells me I am connected, the diagnose program assures me that the problem has been resolved etc. etc. and yet whenever I try to connect (IE, Mozilla, Google, I have tried them all), I get an error screen. I have tried everything I could think of, checking my settings etc. Nothing works.
Let me emphasize that: 1) wireless connection works fine 2) it is a problem with my computer, not the host, since I have encountered the same problem everywhere (libraries with password protected access, private homes without password protected access etc.).
I am unable to send email. Using Vista. Have emptied outbox as suggested in other posts. Outbox was emptied without difficulty, sent to drafts, then deleted. Created new email - tried to send - still couldn't. Error message - unable to connect to smpt server. Have gone to tols - accounts - servers - re-entered info.
I have a strange problem. I have AOL broadband and I'd like to connect to the internet without using the infamous bloated AOL software. I know how to do that using Vistas' "set up connection or network" wizard and I can successfully log in using by username and password. The problem is the connection is very poor when I use this method. The speed tests show the correct speed and downloads are full speed but pages seemingly randomly do not load (for long stretches of several minutes). For example my home page does not load ("page cannot load" error), google does not load, some pages load but not fully with many errors.
This isnt a browser issue (I tried firefox, IE, chrome), this isn't a modem/router issue (I have a laptop that works fine with a permanently logged in router), it's not an AOL issue I can still log in fine with AOL software and then browse fine with firefox, it's not a hardware issue, and it's not a firewall issue (it's off). Therefore it must be an issue with the way windows connects to my modem when using the built in PPPoE broadband connection. I really have no idea what could be wrong. Maybe one of you do?
With Vista, I can get internet for my new Dell XPS laptop over the wireless connection without doing anything other than selecting the connection. No user name or password is needed. But to plug in directly into my cable modem, it does not work. Seems to require user name and password. But I use Verizon and a Motorola SB5101 modem and while it is broadband, I did not think it is pppoe. I don't even know of any user name or password for my account. Am I wrong, is all broadband pppoe? My internet connection works just fine without asking for pppoe login info when I use my desktop with Windows XP. So, it seems to Vista specific problem.
I have been trying to figure out how to create a task in Task Scheduler. I would like my machine to create a restore point daily. I am ok until the Actions dialog.

As y'all are aware it wants me to specify the name of the program I want it to run. I have no idea of the name of the program that creates restore points. And I have no idea where to find the name. I have been using this tutorial but I need the name of the program.
After a month or two honeymoon with my new computer last summer, Windows Vista quit letting me create new file folders!!! This is really, really annoying, needless to say. The other thing is that Windows Vista crashed this weekend and lost some of my files - and the start menu quit working. I think some of the indexes got screwed up or something. I don't know what brought this on except that we had a couple of power failures - and the machine doesn't seem to run chkdsk automatically on restart. If I started the machine and walked away and didn't see the prompt, then I've been using a 'dirty disk' for a week or two and it finally crashed. Or I also installed wireless networking. Also Windows Update downloads automatically and could have downloaded something incompatible with my software. So who knows what might have caused this .I couldn't restore either - now if I ask for Windows restore, it comes up with an error message.I've been using DOS and windows machines for 20 years and I've never had this happen to me before. I've always had virus checkers and been conscientious about backing up my data.
