I have followed the instructions in this tutorial carefully, utilizing the "tweaked" version of disabling services. All 4 WMC services are disabled and withing msconfig the "ehome" auto-start is disabled. Even with all of this windows media center still auto-starts when a dvd is inserted. What is the next option short of installing a different os?
I have had this problem for a now while. As you see in the title an instance of svchost.exe always using about 70,000 K (right now another using 88,000 K) in task manager and I would like to know why and if I can bring that number down. If I right click it and click go to Services, the following are shown:........
Disabling Windows Update in Administrative Tools Services does nothing. I have 2 GB RAM also.
If I get the OEM version, I know that a restriction in the license means it cannot be transferred to another computer. I need to get clarification on the following:
1) What happens if my computer crashes and I am told I have to reformat the hard drive and re-install Windows? Am I forced to buy a new license?
2) What if I want to have a backup hard drive, or upgrade my existing hard drive to a bigger one? If it's the same computer and only the hard drive is upgraded or a second one added, does that mandate a new license?
If there is anyone out there willing to trade their 64bit version of Vista Home Premium for my OEM 32bit version of Vista Home Premium, e-mail me at 'I need the 64bit version because my system has 8GB RAM.
I upgraded my pc and bought Windows Vista ultimate 64bit, and i would like to install Windows vista Business 64bit. How can i do it? I took ultimate because it was the only version i could find (in my area anyway) that had a 64bit version in the box. But i don't want the media center, the high definition, and all the multimedia stuff. All of these ultimate "extras" are of no use whatsover to me. So my question is basically can i install the Business version with my ultimate key ? (is it "downwards" compatible in a way ?). I don't understand why ultimate is the only one with 64bit in the box. It doesn't make sense to me. It would have been much more logical for the Business version to be the one with 64bit in the box.
I purchased a new PC in early 2007 that came with XP. A month or so later I received the Vista upgrade CD which I have never installed. I intend to buy Windows 7 when it becomes available and wish to minimize my system upgrade problems as much as possible. Based on my understanding I would have to do a complete harddrive erase to install Win 7 and then reinstall all my applications. If possible and practical I'd like to upgrade XP to Vista and then Vista to Windows 7. My question am I likely to have problems going from a current up to date version of XP to a 2+ year old version of Vista which would require many updates to bring up to the current level?.
A number of my staff at school have been experiencing difficulties using Windows Vista to attempti access to the netwowk server remotely through what the department calls 'terminal services'. After some investigation, it seems that what is necessary is to disable user access control, reboot so that the new settings can take effect, and then access the server using the driver the department supplies.
I presume of course that at the conclusion of a user session, if one wants UAC enabled, one must essentially follow one of these procedures in reverse. Pretty cumbersome, and unlikely to appeal, I guess. I was wondering if it might be simpler to have a special user on one's Vista machine that has UAC disabled, so that when one wanted to access the server, one could simply log on as that user.
I am trying to disable Inprivate Browsing, but a search always brings me to the tutorial for keeping on or off Inprivate Filtering....are these things the same? I am confused. I can't seem to find simple directions for disabling Inprivate Browsing. Maybe somebody can shed some light on this?
I am using windows XP and i want to disable the usb port (i dont want it to detect flash memories or external storage devices) but at the same time i want it to detect the usb printer, so i cant totally disable the usb port ...
1) before disabling it my RAM usage was always under 50%. it mostly remained around 33% to 45%. when i significantly reduced its size to 200MB fixed, i still didnt see change in RAM usage.
2) after disabling page file my RAM usage would start at the same 33% and after some time easily get over 50%. even upto to 68-70% which it never touched before.
3) there was also a very visible performance boost.
i measured RAM usage with the multi metre sidebar gadget. it is not a one day usage. i have used pagefile for over a year and no paging for a month.
My Pavilion Vista laptop has been running slower and slower. Especially while on the web. Pages take forever to come up. Even program files or the All Programs menu. I have tried disabling Windows Defender thinking it might be scanning everything. Is this a possibility?
New behavior on new Vista HP 64bit installation. Was working fine 4 days ago; had been shut down until last evening. Have installed minimum additional apps, all reportedly 64bit compliant. IE 8 message when starting IE - "Last browsing session closed unexpectedly, Restore previous session or open homepage?" Either choice results in "IE has stopped working, Windows checking for solution"... "A problem caused IE to close, Windows will close program and notify you if solution". IE closes, no solution found. Have tried disabling add-ons, have reset IE settings to default, have disabled McAfee internet security. Have run antivirus scans, malware scans (all clean), my System Restore points were (unknowingly) turned off so my most recent restore point is from last evening, AFTER the problem began. What next? I'm at the point where I COULD run clean install of Vista HP.
I use my laptop both at home and at work. I have mapped a network drive to a shared folder on one of my home computers. Now, logically, every time I use my laptop at work, I get a balloon message saying not all network drives could be restored (or similar, I'm translating from dutch). I know that, and I'm not expecting it to be. I just don't want to do it by hand every time I log on to my home network.
Is it possible to disable that balloon? I've found this old (2004) article for XP that allows disabling ALL notification balloons: but most balloons actually contain useful information. I only want to disable this specific balloon tooltip. Using: Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit, without SP1 (haven't received it through Windows Update yet, and I'm not downloading it manually).
I have a domain with several Vista boxen with users who are local Admins but not Domain Admins (accomplished using Restricted Groups). I need to ensure that these users do not disable User Account Control on their machines as I am sure they will be tempted to do so. Is there a way I can do this (perhaps through Group Policy)?
I found several UAC-related settings and enforced them, but nothing stops them from disabling it entirely. Is there anything I can do besides the obvious choice of not granting them Administrative privileges?
I accidently unplugged my external hard drive from the USB port, (got it mixed up with headset). When I plugged it back in the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon popped up. I unticked/unchecked, Display device components. Rebooted, and the Icon still appeared. I find it annoying and want to hide it.
I unchecked Read-only radio button for folder, and allow for all sub- folders, and agree to all the admin checks, but when I go back to the folder, its still Read-only.
I installed Cisco VPN Client 5.0010600 on my vista ultimate PC. No problem but when i try to maken contact with my work i get the error message: Secure VPN Connection terminated Locally bij the Client. Reason 418: Unable to configure the firewall software. Even disabling the windows firewall gives the same error.
My problem is my windows would stop animating as if I had the visual effect off. That's all I've noticed so far (although thats all I've been doing). I did some research and been reading about dwm but it doesnt help me at all. I've searched google for this issue for the past 3 days and nothing. I've posted on MS boards and nothing. I've updated my nvidia drivers to the beta and it doesn't do anything.
Anyway here's the error in the event viewer: The Desktop Window Manager was unable to start because composition was disabled by a running application A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process (World of Warcraft)
Is it possible to disable the Security Center Alerts on Vista (no icon, no notifications) via command line or by script? Turning off UAC by modifying a certain registry entry turned out to be easy (using the reg.exe command line utility), however I can't find a way to do the same for the Security Center Alerts. I am willing to write some scripting code if that is what it takes.
shortly after i installed SP 1 for vista business my wireless card started to disable itself and stop all traffic. the only way i could get my network back was to reboot the laptop. i have looked in the network connections folder and saw the card was listed as disabled, after trying to enable it it still said it was disabled even tho the enabling... window poped up. i have tried to reinstall drivers, upgrade drivers, release and renew (only to be told it is disabled), run the diagnositcs and checked my router. my router was not causing the problems as others in my house were still connected.
I've disabled this on other systems without a problem, but I have one that I cannot disable it on. In fact I can't seem to be able to change anything in 'Turn Windows features on/off'.
Vista Home Premium 32bit, I have administrator rights, UAC is turned off, and I have tried it in both normal mode and safe mode. It looks like it's working, then just tells me that 'An error has occured, and not all features could be changed'. Doesn't matter what option I try to change (enable/disable).
I've asked this in a couple other forums over the last couple of weeks with no response (except to tell me I need to be an administrator). Just wondered if anyone else has come across this.
Is it possible to disable individual hotkeys? I need to disable Windows + "= / +" and Windows + Spacebar. I know that it's possible to disable ALL hotkeys related to the Windows key, but those two conflict with an app I need.
We currently send an alert when Windows File Protection is diabled on Win2k and 2k3, I wanted to know if there was an alert and what it is when Windows Resource Protection is disabled in Server 2008 and Vista. AND how to disable WRP for testing purposes. Is it possible to disable WRP?
How to disabling windows system restore, I followed the procedure that windows help provides but i can not uncheck the c drive on: computer/(right click) properties/ system protection because there is a message that says "configuration is disabled by group policy". You should know that this is my home computer, is stand alone not connected to any network or domain and I am running as administrator.
I'm on Vista Ultimate, how can I disable the annoying warning alerts that pop up from system tray?
for example: -- "this device can perform faster" (doesn't even tell you what device..) -- Java update available. -- user account warning -- and all other annoying warnings I want to disable all these warning alerts,
The new animations in Windows Vista look great for the first month or so but then they can become an annoyance since they feel like they increase the amount of time it takes to minimize and maximize a window. If you can live without the minimize and maximize animations that you can bring back the super fast feeling of your windows instantly disappearing and appearing by disabling the min/max animations. Follow the steps below to make your windows faster: ...
