View 9 RepliesI have a domain with several Vista boxen with users who are local Admins but not Domain Admins (accomplished using Restricted Groups). I need to ensure that these users do not disable User Account Control on their machines as I am sure they will be tempted to do so. Is there a way I can do this (perhaps through Group Policy)?
I found several UAC-related settings and enforced them, but nothing stops them from disabling it entirely. Is there anything I can do besides the obvious choice of not granting them Administrative privileges?
Is this true behaviour of Vista that if one user got infected with malware/virus it don't propagate on the rest of the users? I already fixed two vista computer with the same behaviour, the other users are not infected.
View 9 Replies View RelatedObviously we have split opinions about which one is better, and half of this subsection is talking about the same thing, "which is best" which is hard to argue. It's easier to find out which one is most used. I'm not sure if it's useful information, but I'm curious.
Oh, and please mention what you are using on post if you are using x64, since I'm looking for a good one to install when I install Vista Home Premium x64.
I have a single (lone) windows Vista machine connected directly to the internet via a dsl modem. I just viewed the following in my eventlogs:
"The browser was unable to promote itself to master browser. The computer that currently believes it is the master browser is JAYS. My machine is NOT called JAYS."
I calculated that to migrate to Vista or Windows 7 will cost close to =A32000. not including my time - It will take around 100 hours. This is because many of my existing software / tools / utilities does not work on Vista and the vendors expect me to buy a new license because it is a "new product" even though it does exactly what it did before - just on a different OS. Even the products that do work have problems and glitches that have to be worked around. All this takes time MY VALUABLE time. In other words I am suffering because Microsoft want money. In the past some versions of windows were worth migrating to Windows 2000 and Windows XP were great
But most of the improvements to Vista / Windows 7 are mostly transparent to normal users - even monster power users like me. I believe Microsoft have a serious attitude problem. just wait until they take full advantage of TPM to screw even more money out of us. If I am wrong please point out a real tangible benefit that Vista or Windows 7 brings to a large percentage of users or to me. I also I can no longer buy a laptop because they only come with Vista GPU drivers (some come with buggy unsupported XP GPU drivers - great)
Which do you prefer, Windows Vista or Windows XP?
View 9 Replies View RelatedA number of my staff at school have been experiencing difficulties using Windows Vista to attempti access to the netwowk server remotely through what the department calls 'terminal services'. After some investigation, it seems that what is necessary is to disable user access control, reboot so that the new settings can take effect, and then access the server using the driver the department supplies.
I presume of course that at the conclusion of a user session, if one wants UAC enabled, one must essentially follow one of these procedures in reverse. Pretty cumbersome, and unlikely to appeal, I guess. I was wondering if it might be simpler to have a special user on one's Vista machine that has UAC disabled, so that when one wanted to access the server, one could simply log on as that user.
Is there a way to do this? Say if I wanted to disable 3 out of the 4 cores on an AMD Phenom X4 processor.
Is this totally dependent on my motherboard BIOS and CPU itself?

2) after disabling page file my RAM usage would start at the same 33% and after some time easily get over 50%. even upto to 68-70% which it never touched before.
3) there was also a very visible performance boost.

View 9 Replies View RelatedSomeone has suggested a possible 'cure' for the many Win Mail probs I am experiencing would be for me to:-
1, Uninstall my McaFee
2. Then install another anti-virus prog ("AVG") disabling "just the part that scans email".
Sorry if I am being dumb but surely that would result in my leaving myself wide open to even more probs (i.e. importing viruses)?
New behavior on new Vista HP 64bit installation. Was working fine 4 days ago; had been shut down until last evening. Have installed minimum additional apps, all reportedly 64bit compliant. IE 8 message when starting IE - "Last browsing session closed unexpectedly, Restore previous session or open homepage?" Either choice results in "IE has stopped working, Windows checking for solution"... "A problem caused IE to close, Windows will close program and notify you if solution". IE closes, no solution found. Have tried disabling add-ons, have reset IE settings to default, have disabled McAfee internet security. Have run antivirus scans, malware scans (all clean), my System Restore points were (unknowingly) turned off so my most recent restore point is from last evening, AFTER the problem began. What next? I'm at the point where I COULD run clean install of Vista HP.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI use my laptop both at home and at work. I have mapped a network drive to a shared folder on one of my home computers. Now, logically, every time I use my laptop at work, I get a balloon message saying not all network drives could be restored (or similar, I'm translating from dutch). I know that, and I'm not expecting it to be. I just don't want to do it by hand every time I log on to my home network.
Is it possible to disable that balloon? I've found this old (2004) article for XP that allows disabling ALL notification balloons: but most balloons actually contain useful information. I only want to disable this specific balloon tooltip. Using: Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit, without SP1 (haven't received it through Windows Update yet, and I'm not downloading it manually).
I accidently unplugged my external hard drive from the USB port, (got it mixed up with headset). When I plugged it back in the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon popped up. I unticked/unchecked, Display device components. Rebooted, and the Icon still appeared. I find it annoying and want to hide it.

Is it possible to disable the Security Center Alerts on Vista (no icon, no notifications) via command line or by script? Turning off UAC by modifying a certain registry entry turned out to be easy (using the reg.exe command line utility), however I can't find a way to do the same for the Security Center Alerts. I am willing to write some scripting code if that is what it takes.

The new animations in Windows Vista look great for the first month or so but then they can become an annoyance since they feel like they increase the amount of time it takes to minimize and maximize a window. If you can live without the minimize and maximize animations that you can bring back the super fast feeling of your windows instantly disappearing and appearing by disabling the min/max animations.
Follow the steps below to make your windows faster: ...
I've had some issues with the winrar shell integration, the program works fine for extracting files with doubleclick to open it up, extract to etc. But using rightclick, drag, extract here just doesn't do anything. I figured it had something to do with the untrusted programs popupthing, so i tried disabling the Windows Defender which still didn't help.
