Someone has suggested a possible 'cure' for the many Win Mail probs I am experiencing would be for me to:-
1, Uninstall my McaFee
2. Then install another anti-virus prog ("AVG") disabling "just the part that scans email".
Sorry if I am being dumb but surely that would result in my leaving myself wide open to even more probs (i.e. importing viruses)?
I'm running Vista Home Premium SPA, 2 GB RAM, Firefox, Spyware Doctor, MBAM, SAS and CCleaner, Office 2007. I also have Spyware doctor installed on a Windows 7 laptop. Can anyone tell me (or redirect me) if my Spyware Doctor scanner (or any other scheduled scanner) runs when the computer is either sleeping or is in hibernate mode?
My Spyware Doctor history file suggest that it's been several weeks since the last scheduled scan, yet the scanner scheduler is set to run every night. We close the laptop cover each night and I'm not sure if closing the cover stops the scheduled scan from running.
1) My brother plugged in a pen drive in my laptop which contained viruses at that time i had norton internet security 11.0 which hang during scanning the usb drive.
2)the virus was transfered anyhow without opening any file in my laptop then i manually deleted unrecognized files and folders including desktop.ini this i think was main virus i know its a config file but there was 100 of this files.
3)everytime whether i insert a blank cd,dvd or data cd dvd it always showed me that files ready to be written on disk and the file was hidden guess what was it it was DESKTOP.INI and 3 days before i burn a mp3 cd using roxio media creator and since then my dvd drive has gone... it automatically ejects when i insert blank or data cd dvd and the msg is given to me that "there is no disk into drive please insert cd"......
I am running Vista Ultimate - my computer is directly networked to the main computer and is set up for printer - file - etc sharing. Attached to the main computer is a Lexmark X5470 multi purpose printer. From my machine I can print with no problem at all , but I cannot get the scanner to operate!. In my network sharing centre - the printers are shown as X 5470 as a printer and also a seperate X 5470 as a Fax.

I have run the System Restore Function to the oldest stored point, before a HP update which is the only update that I can see on there.
It will start quite happily in safe mode, I did the msconfig thing and turned off all the bits in as per another thread and all the start up stuff but the problem was still there. I am now well and truly out of my comfort zone.
I have a problem with my PC (vista). It just freezes randomly while I am working on it. It also freezes during the Antivirus scanning (avast), windows defender scanning and windows update. I cannot do anything except turn it of manually (ON/OFF). It also freezes when I insert a usb drive, and recently is making strange sounds (beebs,toot) as some creatures are living inside it. (It also freezes in safe mood). Moreover, a blue screen appeared morethan once and I don't know if the problem is due to a virus or an error in the system.

Near as I can determine, it does not seem to matter at allwhether my Vista Document folder is empty, or chock-full of text documents, as far as speech recognition accuracy

I _did_ check-mark the box that allows user documents to be read, but it does not seem to have any effect one way or the other.
Can receive but can't send e-mails, Am running Outlook 2007 and receiving message "0x80070057 Could not complete operation. One or more parameter values are not valiid. " Norton outgoing message scanning is turned off. Have POP3(SMTP) and it sais "mail server has reported an internal error. 503 Valid RCPT command must precede DATA. Can anyone help, PLEASE, ASAP.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have Windows Defender as an active part of my Laptop Security, and have it set to install updated Definitions automatically. This is run in conjunction with avast! v4.8 Home Edition - Free Anti-Virus, and with regular checks using Spybot Search and Destroy v1.6.2.46 - both kept right up to date. Regardless of the fact that at Windows Defender>Tools>Options, I have these settings, Windows Defender never automatically completes the set task, and I am sometimes reminded that a scan has not been done for 2-3 days, and then need to complete the job manually. The Laptop is always ON at this time, and I fail to see a reason why Windows Defender should fail to activate the set scan. It's a minor nuisance, but a nuisance all the same.

Have all the upgrades to the HP all in one, driver, etc. If I can't scan, will there be a service package 2 coming out since it seems Vista and my scanner are not compatible?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI run Windows Vista Home Premium (32). I've used my HP Photosmart C4280 printer for about 2 years, worked fine for the most part. Lately I started having problems, so I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver & software (got the latest versions from HP download site). Since reinstall, my scanner isn't working. Whether I press the "Scan" button on the unit, or I select "Scan picture" or "Scan document" from the HP Solution Center, an error pops up: "An error occurred communicating with the scanning device. Please ensure that the printing device is properly connected and try again".
Also, I've uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers/software several times, cleaned temporary files and registry, still the problem persists. Having said that, the printing/copying works fine, so I know that the printer is properly connected. BTW, tried connecting the same printer to a friend's PC running Windows XP and it scans with no problem, so the issue must have something to do with HP interacting (non-interacting) with Vista.
I have two labtops, one (gateway) with Vista and one (compaq) with XP. Each one runs on a Netgear router and for the first few months I had the Gateway which I bought last December there were no problems. Around August I could get to the start page on Internet Explorer but when trying to get to another website my page loaded half way slowly on my usually fast connection then stopped, no error message no internet conection problem screen, just kept loading but couldn't load any farther. I've tried everything, updating Vista and McAfee, resetting Internet Explorer, deleting cookies and favorites as well as other internet files, scanning for spyware, othning works. Details: 2006 Gateway M-6816 model with Vista Home Premium 32-bit, wireless connection, Netgear router provided by Comcast, Internet Explorer 7.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am concerned that Microsoft Security Essentials [MSE] is not performing as it should, because it doesn't appear to be activating and running a scan as scheduled under Settings.
If I open MSE and choose to click on the Scan Now button to carry out a Manual Scan on demand, then three events are clearly visible in 'real time' -
There is activity on the progress bar of the window that opens, and files being scanned are clearly seen. The MSE Icon in the Notification Tray shows rotational movement indicating that a scan is in progress. and, At the end, a summarised report window opens. Example here -
this shows how many items were scanned, and reports on the 'threats' status.
I have tried to verify my claim above, by carrying out a number of 'tests', primarily to try and determine if User scheduled scan settings, are actually initiating the automatic update and scan by MSE.
The scheduled 'test' scan times have come and gone, without any visual evidence to show that MSE has automatically activated and conducted the scan, as set by User settings. None of the following show any evidence of a scan either starting, being 'in progress', or ever being carried out;
The MSE Icon does not activate. There is no post-scan report [as shown above from the manual scan]. and, A check of Windows Update, shows that no further Updated Definitions for MSE, have been added to Update History. I am beginning to suspect that because I use Firefox as my default browser, somehow this may disable or immobilise the automatic scheduled scan function of MSE. I also wonder how many other Users are experiencing the same difficulties.
I have been online for over 8 yrs and on my XP i refused to use your server. Outlook and now i am finding that with my new Vista some things i am forced to use you for. like scanning pictures to send to others and if you dont have the right info input; you will be advised of a lot of error remarks...As long as you have been around; i think you should make your server more friendly user for people that are not pro's or experts..

I have tried at Phoenix' homepage, but they redirect me to DriverAgent that is a driver scanning program and that costs money. It must be possible to find the update elsewhere.
View 4 Replies View RelatedA number of my staff at school have been experiencing difficulties using Windows Vista to attempti access to the netwowk server remotely through what the department calls 'terminal services'. After some investigation, it seems that what is necessary is to disable user access control, reboot so that the new settings can take effect, and then access the server using the driver the department supplies.
I presume of course that at the conclusion of a user session, if one wants UAC enabled, one must essentially follow one of these procedures in reverse. Pretty cumbersome, and unlikely to appeal, I guess. I was wondering if it might be simpler to have a special user on one's Vista machine that has UAC disabled, so that when one wanted to access the server, one could simply log on as that user.
Is there a way to do this? Say if I wanted to disable 3 out of the 4 cores on an AMD Phenom X4 processor.
Is this totally dependent on my motherboard BIOS and CPU itself?
I am trying to disable Inprivate Browsing, but a search always brings me to the tutorial for keeping on or off Inprivate Filtering....are these things the same? I am confused. I can't seem to find simple directions for disabling Inprivate Browsing. Maybe somebody can shed some light on this?

View 4 Replies View Related1) before disabling it my RAM usage was always under 50%. it mostly remained around 33% to 45%. when i significantly reduced its size to 200MB fixed, i still didnt see change in RAM usage.
2) after disabling page file my RAM usage would start at the same 33% and after some time easily get over 50%. even upto to 68-70% which it never touched before.
3) there was also a very visible performance boost.
i measured RAM usage with the multi metre sidebar gadget. it is not a one day usage. i have used pagefile for over a year and no paging for a month.
My Pavilion Vista laptop has been running slower and slower. Especially while on the web. Pages take forever to come up. Even program files or the All Programs menu. I have tried disabling Windows Defender thinking it might be scanning everything. Is this a possibility?
View 9 Replies View RelatedNew behavior on new Vista HP 64bit installation. Was working fine 4 days ago; had been shut down until last evening. Have installed minimum additional apps, all reportedly 64bit compliant. IE 8 message when starting IE - "Last browsing session closed unexpectedly, Restore previous session or open homepage?" Either choice results in "IE has stopped working, Windows checking for solution"... "A problem caused IE to close, Windows will close program and notify you if solution". IE closes, no solution found. Have tried disabling add-ons, have reset IE settings to default, have disabled McAfee internet security. Have run antivirus scans, malware scans (all clean), my System Restore points were (unknowingly) turned off so my most recent restore point is from last evening, AFTER the problem began. What next? I'm at the point where I COULD run clean install of Vista HP.

Now, logically, every time I use my laptop at work, I get a balloon message saying not all network drives could be restored (or similar, I'm translating from dutch). I know that, and I'm not expecting it to be. I just don't want to do it by hand every time I log on to my home network.
Is it possible to disable that balloon? I've found this old (2004) article for XP that allows disabling ALL notification balloons: but most balloons actually contain useful information. I only want to disable this specific balloon tooltip. Using: Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit, without SP1 (haven't received it through Windows Update yet, and I'm not downloading it manually).
I have a domain with several Vista boxen with users who are local Admins but not Domain Admins (accomplished using Restricted Groups). I need to ensure that these users do not disable User Account Control on their machines as I am sure they will be tempted to do so. Is there a way I can do this (perhaps through Group Policy)?
I found several UAC-related settings and enforced them, but nothing stops them from disabling it entirely. Is there anything I can do besides the obvious choice of not granting them Administrative privileges?
I accidently unplugged my external hard drive from the USB port, (got it mixed up with headset). When I plugged it back in the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon popped up. I unticked/unchecked, Display device components. Rebooted, and the Icon still appeared. I find it annoying and want to hide it.

No problem but when i try to maken contact with my work i get the error message: Secure VPN Connection terminated Locally bij the Client. Reason 418: Unable to configure the firewall software. I did some research and been reading about dwm but it doesnt help me at all. I've searched google for this issue for the past 3 days and nothing. I've posted on MS boards and nothing. Is it possible to disable the Security Center Alerts on Vista (no icon, no notifications) via command line or by script? Turning off UAC by modifying a certain registry entry turned out to be easy (using the reg.exe command line utility), however I can't find a way to do the same for the Security Center Alerts. I am willing to write some scripting code if that is what it takes.
View 9 Replies View Relatedshortly after i installed SP 1 for vista business my wireless card started to disable itself and stop all traffic. the only way i could get my network back was to reboot the laptop. i have looked in the network connections folder and saw the card was listed as disabled, after trying to enable it it still said it was disabled even tho the enabling... window poped up. i have tried to reinstall drivers, upgrade drivers, release and renew (only to be told it is disabled), run the diagnositcs and checked my router. my router was not causing the problems as others in my house were still connected.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've disabled this on other systems without a problem, but I have one that I cannot disable it on. In fact I can't seem to be able to change anything in 'Turn Windows features on/off'.
Vista Home Premium 32bit, I have administrator rights, UAC is turned off, and I have tried it in both normal mode and safe mode. It looks like it's working, then just tells me that 'An error has occured, and not all features could be changed'. Doesn't matter what option I try to change (enable/disable).
I've asked this in a couple other forums over the last couple of weeks with no response (except to tell me I need to be an administrator). Just wondered if anyone else has come across this.
