May 11, 2008
I bought a laptop with XP MCE and later bought a Vista upgrade. The laptop has died (only 16 months old!) and wont be repaired. Can I transfer the Vista OS and licence to my home computer?

Does anyone know if Microsoft allows you to transfer the licence key (for say Vista) to another computer if the the first computer becomes irreparably damaged?

I heard is is possible under some circumstances to swap a Vista licence back to an XP licence and would like to investigate if it is possible for me to do this. My reasons are the poor networking performance of Vista cf XP and also the fact that none of the MS development systems I am using (VS6 and VS2003.NET) will run on Vista.

I have just built a new PC and installed Vista Home Premium X64, basically, I am having a lot more software compatibility issues than I expected some with programs I require for work purposes and as such can???t be without. Could someone please confirm that Microsoft are not allowing you to use your purchased Vista licence to temporarily downgrade to XP while the well publicised compatibility issues are addressed?

so my laptop is pretty much dead, wont be using it ever again. And it has Vista Home Premium 32Bit on it. I have decided to make a desktop instead, cheaper in my opinion, and I don't really need a laptop anymore. So i was wondering if i can transfer the OS to my desktop. I heard you just have to type in the Key, and if it does not go through you activate it by phone. Is this true? Can i do this. It would in turn save me around 150$. Also if this does work can i really upgrade it to a 64Bit for 10$ or something?

Microsoft in Russia was absolutely lost by conscience. I'm owner of licence Vista Ultimate Box gained in the beginning of 2009. But its mean NOTHING...I cant gain the upgrade-version of Windows 7 for my Vista. In any country except Russia its possible and cost around 160-215 dollars. In Russia if I want to upgrade Vista till Window 7, I should gain the complete licence and price for me is 400-500 dollars. Excellent. Thus these mongrels still dare to say that for us the cheapest prices in the world. Microsoft does all possible to beat off for the licence user desire to be it...

Using VISTA Ultimate on an IBM T60p laptop. I am going to upgrade the hard drive from 100 to 320 GB. I have a 300GB SimpleTech external drive. I want to copy (image) the current hard drive to the SimpleTech, replace the hard drive and copy the image of from the SimpleTech back to the new drive.
1. Can this be done?
2. What software should one use?
3. Where would one find the steps necessary to do the imaging portion. (I
can handle the hardware.)

Unrelated - why can't I make a post on the Microsoft website to this Newsgroup? Everytime I click New and choose Question I get a hand with a explosion symbol and nothing else?

I am at the point where my XP Pro install is probably due a good blowing away and re-installing. I am aware that just upgrading XP Pro to Vista will be very time consuming (took well over 3 hours when I went from my original XP pro to the first release about a year ago and lots of stuff was messed up and I ended up reformatting and starting again with a clean install). This is my conceptual plan:
* This time I want to back up my settings with the "file & settings transfer
wizard" on the XP box to one of my server shares.
* Back up all my important document stuff to the server.
* Then I will format everything on my PC and clean install Vista Ultimate.
* Finally restore my settings back from the server using the Vista FSTW
Presumably the Vista FSTW equivalent can read the XP versions files, or
should I expect troubles trying to do this?

I am attempting to transfer files & settings using the Belkin Easy Transfer cable from an XP computer to a Vista computer. All starts well by showing that the two computers are connected. But after finding the files and settings and providing the amount of data to be transferred, it starts gathering information but then shows a flashing disconnection icon in the upper right of both computers' transfer windows and freezes. This happens at a different place each time, but early in the procedure (after about 10 minutes). Would anyone have any advice? I have done everything by the book, as far as I'm aware.

As SP1 looms, it's probably time to go back to Vista after I tried it when on the Beta and RC releases and had a few problems with compatibility with other bits of kit. I am running a small home network. Configuration: My DSL WLAN router Zyxel Prestige 660HW-67 acts also as a 4-Port switch with 100 Mbits/s. Attached to this router are
1. Vista Business x86 SP1 with RTL8139/810x-Family onboard
2. Dell T105 server running Windows Home Server SP2 (Windows 2003)
3. Windows XP SP3 using WLAN
Problem: The Vista PC will transfer data to WHS or XP with very low bandwidth (150 kbits/s) The other way round will work with more than 10 Mbits/s from the WHS. Transfering data betwee WHS and XP will work fine in bot directions. So it looks like Vista is blocking outbound traffic. The Vista PC also runs F-Secure Internet Security 2009. But te firewall allows all traffic in my home domain (mask 255.25.255.0). I uninstalled the network adapter, installed the newest driver from Realtek but no change in the low outbound traffic.

I want to transfer all data from my main computer to a standby computer (without losing the data on the main computer) and then to synchronize them both on a daily/weekly basis, both with OS Win.Vista Business. I am advised by Belkin that their Easy Transfer Cable for Windows Vista is not 100% reliable for this purpose and they do not have a cable or software to do this job.

I would like the option to back out of the enterprise edition and revert to my own licence if necessary. When I got this PC it didn't come with any system discs, only a factory image on a partition. I have since created recovery disks for it. Are the recovery discs what I need to restore to the original configuration? If not, what is the correct strategy to take?

My computer just died, with a complex Vista installation on a 250 GB drive. I have a replacement unit on its way, but is there any way to transfer the drive with the Vista install to the new computer and get a working system? My Vista is a full retail copy. I'm now working on XP from my backup machine, an old Dell Optiplex GX200, with a 733 MHZ P3 that's not capable of running Vista. I could reinstall Vista, but would lose an awful lot of data and installed programs.

This is probably a very simple question, transferring from xp to vista using easy transfer, over the years theres been a lot of stuff duplicated and deleted on my xp machine. I believe all these deleted copies and all the other deleted stuff stays on the computer, just not visible. Does esay transfer transfer all this deleted stuff as well, and if so is there anything special I should do to my xp machine to stop these copying. Don't want to fill the vista before i've used it with deleted stuff.

I have a HP desktop running Vista premium. I "had" an Emachine that ran XP, but it died. (I think the power supply went out) Whatever the case I am not going to get the XP computer fixed, but I do want some files off the old harddrive out of it. How do I do that? I'm hearing of a USB adapter of some sort that will do it...is that true? I went on Ebay, saw some USB's but am not sure they will do what I need for them to do.

I have 2 vista and 2 xp mechines on my network. When I transfer files between my 2 vista mechines I see transfer rates between 5 and 7 mgs, but when transfering from vista to xp I'm lucky if I see 1 mg. I mainly noticed it because I just set up a xp for file backup and its not running a firewall (not even windows firewall) and the data transfer is taking forever.
