View 4 Repliesso my laptop is pretty much dead, wont be using it ever again. And it has Vista Home Premium 32Bit on it. I have decided to make a desktop instead, cheaper in my opinion, and I don't really need a laptop anymore. So i was wondering if i can transfer the OS to my desktop. I heard you just have to type in the Key, and if it does not go through you activate it by phone. Is this true? Can i do this. It would in turn save me around 150$. Also if this does work can i really upgrade it to a 64Bit for 10$ or something?

I want to copy (image) the current hard drive to the SimpleTech, replace the hard drive and copy the image of from the SimpleTech back to the new drive.
1. Can this be done?
2. What software should one use?
3. Where would one find the steps necessary to do the imaging portion. (I
can handle the hardware.)

I am at the point where my XP Pro install is probably due a good blowing away and re-installing. I am aware that just upgrading XP Pro to Vista will be very time consuming (took well over 3 hours when I went from my original XP pro to the first release about a year ago and lots of stuff was messed up and I ended up reformatting and starting again with a clean install). This is my conceptual plan:
* This time I want to back up my settings with the "file & settings transfer
wizard" on the XP box to one of my server shares.
* Back up all my important document stuff to the server.
* Then I will format everything on my PC and clean install Vista Ultimate.
* Finally restore my settings back from the server using the Vista FSTW
Presumably the Vista FSTW equivalent can read the XP versions files, or
should I expect troubles trying to do this?
Will Windows Easy Transfer work with only XP? I'm getting a new laptop before my old one stops working and I don't want to move to Vista. I just want to move XP pro to XP pro.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to transfer files & settings using the Belkin Easy Transfer cable from an XP computer to a Vista computer. All starts well by showing that the two computers are connected. But after finding the files and settings and providing the amount of data to be transferred, it starts gathering information but then shows a flashing disconnection icon in the upper right of both computers' transfer windows and freezes. This happens at a different place each time, but early in the procedure (after about 10 minutes). Would anyone have any advice? I have done everything by the book, as far as I'm aware.

I am running a small home network. Configuration: My DSL WLAN router Zyxel Prestige 660HW-67 acts also as a 4-Port switch with 100 Mbits/s. Attached to this router are
1. Vista Business x86 SP1 with RTL8139/810x-Family onboard
2. Dell T105 server running Windows Home Server SP2 (Windows 2003)
3. Windows XP SP3 using WLAN
Problem: The Vista PC will transfer data to WHS or XP with very low bandwidth (150 kbits/s) The other way round will work with more than 10 Mbits/s from the WHS. Transfering data betwee WHS and XP will work fine in bot directions. So it looks like Vista is blocking outbound traffic. The Vista PC also runs F-Secure Internet Security 2009. But te firewall allows all traffic in my home domain (mask 255.25.255.0). I uninstalled the network adapter, installed the newest driver from Realtek but no change in the low outbound traffic.
I have hard drives from both Win 98 SE and XP machines. I currently use a system with Vista 32. Is it possible to hook up these drives to my Vista machine and transfer the data to the Vista drive?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI want to transfer all data from my main computer to a standby computer (without losing the data on the main computer) and then to synchronize them both on a daily/weekly basis, both with OS Win.Vista Business. I am advised by Belkin that their Easy Transfer Cable for Windows Vista is not 100% reliable for this purpose and they do not have a cable or software to do this job.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy computer just died, with a complex Vista installation on a 250 GB drive. I have a replacement unit on its way, but is there any way to transfer the drive with the Vista install to the new computer and get a working system? My Vista is a full retail copy. I'm now working on XP from my backup machine, an old Dell Optiplex GX200, with a 733 MHZ P3 that's not capable of running Vista. I could reinstall Vista, but would lose an awful lot of data and installed programs.

I believe all these deleted copies and all the other deleted stuff stays on the computer, just not visible. Does esay transfer transfer all this deleted stuff as well, and if so is there anything special I should do to my xp machine to stop these copying. Don't want to fill the vista before i've used it with deleted stuff.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI rarely want to save an email. When I do, I drag it into the "drafts" folder. Meanwhile, Vista is saving every email I have received since I bought this computer and went online. Why? I don't want them. I delete them after reading every day, even using the "shift-delete" permanent(?) method. Yet all the emails are stored in some "indexed location", taking up space. how to stop this constant storage by Vista? I have tried to delete the old emails but they never go away.

View 4 Replies View RelatedOk. I now own Vista and I'm trying to recreate the mail experience I had on my XP pc. My wife and I both have separate email accounts with our ISP and in XP Outlook Express we set up two identities so that our mail was separate.
When we opened up Outlook Express we were able to select which identity we wanted to operate under.
In Vista we log in to the pc using a single account and that's how we want to keep it.
Is it really impossible to have segregated email accounts in Vista?
I've seen hints that Live Mail, which is apparently new, allows this but none of the documentation is very clear.
Is it operating correctly that I can't print a draft document in Vista Email?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm not even sure if this is where I should post this but I'll give it a go. I purchased a new PC last week with Vista Home Premium on it. I have (for years) used MSN Premium software as my email program. Now, it seems I can't make this my default email program with Vista. I am going nuts! I have spoken to MSN support who tell me to do the same things over and over. I have also spoken to Microsoft support who told me I have to use Outlook or Windows Live mail instead.
It's really hard. I have taught my elderly parents how to use the MSN software and now we have to change - or do we? I've tried the email settings in MSN itself, I've tried associations for programs in Vista and also the default programs. Nothing is working. Surely, one Microsoft program should work with another? We pay for this software so that we can also have sub accounts on our email more storage than the usual hotmail space.
Just googled this forum and am so thankful it is out here! Here's my situation: I am in the Army and have an issue with file encryption. I am knowledgable in computers (OS's, software, hardware) but lack any encryption smarts! We recently updated to WIN VISTA Enterprise. We also log into each computer using our ID cards that contain our personal keys or codes on them in the form of a chip. Recently, DOD directed that all its computers will have an encrypted folder on the desktops and that all data with sensitive info. be placed into that folder. I complied with the regulation and proceeded to place my MS OUTLOOK.PST and personal email file.PST into the folder. The next day I went to replace my expired ID Card. I came into work, logged onto my laptop, and could not (and still cannot) access my personal email folder that is encrypted.
Several peeps from our D.O.I.M. (Directorate Of Information Management) have tried and now they tell me its locked forever because my old ID card was used to encrypt it. I have the old key available (the Army actually backed that up for me) and have tried accessing my personal email file using that key to no avail. (It was a lengthy process and I can't remember all the steps but we did use the old key but apparently it will NOT work with my new ID Card) Is there a way to decrypt this file? The Army is out of ideas!
I recently switched from IE7 to FireFox 3(Should have done it A LOT sooner!!!). I love the program except for one thing. In the Vista Start Menu when I click on my email button it still opens with IE7. Is there a way to fix this so that it uses FireFox instead?
