Tiny Fonts Printed In Email With Attachments

Aug 10, 2009

My new computer has Vista 64 bit and Windows mail. I often get emails with text followed by attached photos. I print only the selection of text. It is printing too tiny to read. I remember the way to fix that in XP and IE7 by changing a % in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftInternet ExplorerMAINFeatureControlFEATURE_STF_Scale_Min but don't know if that is safe to try in Vista 64 or if it will work. Has anyone had the tiny font problem (when in email with photos) and been able to fix it? If not, can I uninstall IE8 and will the machine revert to IE 7? I don't even know if that works as I haven't had this computer more than a few days.

Power Supply : Tiny LEDs On MB Light

Feb 19, 2009

when my PC is on, life is good. Everything works. No problems. Vista is set to shut down the power after 30 minutes and put the PC into sleep mode. At that point, the PC seems 'Off' until I hit a key/move the mouse; and it 'wakes up'. It seems like, sometimes, the PC will not wake up. when I hit the keyboard, moved the mouse - nothing. I hit the power button (held it in for 5+ seconds), hit the reset button...and still nothing. I tried unplugging it and plugging it back in. NOTHING. So, I opened my case and gave my PSU a fairly gentle tap and I noticed some tiny LEDs on the MB light up. At that point, I hit the power button - and the PC came to life. Vista said it was 'resuming windows' but everything was crawling about about 10% of the speed it should be. I had to reboot, after rebooting, everything was fine.

It does wake up sometimes though, sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't, the only way I can seem to get it to turn back on is to 'bang' a bit on the PSU; but the power has never gone 'out' while I was playing on the computer (which is a lot of time). If the PSU was bad and there is a short or something and when I bang on it, it reconnects....I can't explain why it never 'shorts out' or comes loose while I'm using the PC.

If it were a bug with Vista, I could see how or why it might work sometimes and not other times, and why the power never dies while I'm using the PC....but I can't understand how my 'tap' on the PSU could get it to turn back on. Basically - I have no idea WTF is going on. A new PSU would be ~$100 dollars and I'd hate to replace it if there is nothing wrong. my tap on the PSU is not affecting the connection between the PSU and Motherboard. The PSU is at the bottom of my case and my tap is really not very hard at all.

Extra Page Printed At The End

Aug 14, 2009

I have a Dell A920 printer which worked fine on an XP machine. I have since upgraded to a new machine running Vista Home Premium. When I print from IE or an email from Firebird, I always get an extra page printed at the end. In Firebird, if I do a Print Preview, the entire email appears on one page. When I print, it prints an informational line which appears on the bottom of the preview page on the top of the 2nd page. If I shrink the document, it does the same thing. If I am in IE and tell it to print just 1 pages, it will still followup with a 2nd page. Office applications, Word and Excel, print just fine.

Job Starts Quickly Disappears With Nothing Printed

Mar 23, 2008

We need to run one of our large 16bit Visual Basic 3.0 applications on Vista Ultimate (32bit) while we rewrite the app in VB .Net. So far I have been able to install the VB3 app, and even the VB3 dev, on Vista and with a few small changes all runs well except for printing from the VB app. We use the VB PrintForm command to print a screen image from the app. All works well under Windows XP but under Vista nothing prints. Watching the Print Queue for the default printer, a job starts then quickly disappears from the queue with nothing printed.

The VB3 app can see the printer and the printer properties OK using Printer Setup (Common Dialog VBX). Printing works fine from Word 2003 and other 32 bit apps on the PC. I have tried several printers, all work OK under Vista except for the 16 bit apps. I have tried running the app as Admin and changing compatibilty properties. Does Vista support any printing from 16 bit apps?

Can't Send Email With Attachments

Mar 23, 2008

I can receive email with attachments with no problem. I can send email without attachments with no problem. Whenever I attempt to send an email with any attachment, small or large, the system times out and gives mean error message "Task 'mail.comcast.net - Sending' reported error (0x8004210B) : 'The
operation timed out waiting for a response from the sending (SMTP)server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).' "

It does not seem to be the program - Outlook - since I tried another email program and got the same results. My wife sends emails with no problem on another computer in the same network and same ISP.

Can't Open Email Attachments

May 10, 2009

I have vista home premium and use Windows Mail. I have 3 users on my computer. One of the users can't open email attachments, any type. He can save attachments and open them from the folder, but can't just click and open. I have the same problem as the administrator occasionally. When it happens, I exit the email, re-open and it works fine. No error messages, just nothing happens when I click on the attachment. I have Internet Explorer 8, any chance that has something to do with it? I've downloaded
updates, checked settings, everything is in order as far as I can tell. In security, attachements are allowed and it's set for Internet Zone.

Windows Mail: Unable To Open Email Attachments Received In .pdf Or .jpg Format

Apr 14, 2008

Since migrating to Windows Mail a year ago on a new PC running Vista, I've been unable to open, or to save and open, email attachments received in .pdf or .jpg format. When I try to open .pdf attachments, I get an error message reading, "This
file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel." If I save a .pdf attachment in Adobe Reader and then try to open it, I get a message saying, "Adobe Reader could not open [file] because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)." I run Adobe Reader 8. Where do I look to find a solution to this problem? Is it related to the similar problem with JPEG's?

Tried removing the Fax Printer from the Printers Console - DID remove, and then when I went I opened the Fax and Send Console, and tried to send a fax it prompted me that I did not have the Fax Printer installed and it re-installed it, but no help from that.

Copy Fonts

Jun 12, 2008

I need to install SR2 for Access 97 on Vista - Home Basic. While Access 97installs fine, there's a known problem installing SR2 on Vista. Theworkaround that I've come across involves temporarily replacing four Vistafonts (comic.ttf, comicbd.ttf, tahoma.ttf, and tahomabd.ttf) with thoseversions which come with SR2. This reportedly allows SR2 to be installed, after which the four Vista fonts are copied back to the Windows/Fontsfolder.

This procedure begins with copying those four Vista fonts to a temporaryfolder. I am unable to do this, however. If I use cntrl-c to copy andcntrl-v to paste, nothing is pasted into the temporary folder. If I right-click on the font, the Copy command is not available. If I use Edit/Copy and Edit/Paste, nothing is pasted into the temporary folder. Vista will not allow full privileges for these fonts, even though I'm signed on as Administrator.
