System Does Not Support Dual Channel RAM Cards
Jul 13, 2009
I own an Alienware Area-51 7500-R5 gaming desktop. I am upgrading to Windows Vista Ultimate x64. I am thinking to upgrade the RAM to 8GB. The only issue is that my system does not support Dual Channel RAM cards. Do they sell single channel RAM cards? I can't seem to find any. Another problem as well, I did a Crucial Memory Scan and it read: Maximum Memory Supported: 4096MB. Does this refer to that I cannot go over 4096MB because of my system or because of the Operating System I am running. I am running Windows XP Pro 32bit. I know 32bit can only process 4GB of RAM or 4096MB of RAM. But does the memory scan refer to the Operating System limit or how much my system can handle overall. When I bought it Alienware said I could do plenty of upgrades on it.

does it really matter what PC subcategory of memory i get as long as it's DDR2 dual channel or not it would still be compatible with my motherboard right?

My friend & I is having some problems with our ram. We both have 4 gb, he's laptop shows 2.54gb ram availible. (Under System information) And mine shows the same amount, sometimes. What can course this? I'm running Vista Ultimate x64, and he's running Vista Home Premium x86. [A little side question. When a motherboard supports Dual Channel ram, does the ram have to be dual channel for it to run DC? And (if I have 2 ram dimms) do I put 1 in DIMM A1 and one in A2, or A1 and B1 ?]

4GB Gets Cheap: 9 Dual-Channel Kits Compared. DDR2 SDRAM prices began dropping significantly last summer as the world prepared for DDR3-only Core i7 platforms, culminating in today’s ultra-low-priced, four-gigabyte dual-channel kits. For as little as $25, users of this older technology can step up to memory levels that had been reserved for only the upper echelon of last-year’s buyers.
Who needs 4.0 GB RAM? At these prices, does it really matter? Most systems eventually get clogged up with rarely used programs such as second or third instant messengers, redundant spyware blockers, and other once-useful tools that have become parasites while users, still mindful of the program’s former effectiveness, often don’t want to bother removing. The accumulation of junk can affect any operating system.

What have forum members found to be the fastest, highest quality half-height PCI-Express, DirectX 10 graphics card? I've currently got an ATI x1300 Pro (256Mb) but would like something that has DirectX10 support and has more and faster memory.

I'm running:
Intel Core 2 Duo @ 1.73 GHz
3.5 GB RAM
ATI Raedeon Xpress 200M Chipset
Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit
I have recently installed a ATI Radeon HD 4670 into my computer, I downloaded the latest ATI Catalyst driver from the ATI website and it installed the latest driver for both of the video cards, after it restarted I get this error message in the device manager for the ATI Radeon HD 4670:
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)
I checked in the device manager and it says it has the same wddm driver version for both devices, I have tried installing many times but it continues to presist, is this a Windows Vista or ATI issue? Is there anything I can do to fix it?

Running Windows Vista Ult and i installed a second graphics card to run 3 monitors.
The problem is device manager doesn't show the second installed graphics card.
My System:
E6850
GA-x38-DQ6 MoBo
4Gb ram
8800 Ultra
7600GT (This is the card i added)
Basically it recognizes the 8800 Ultra only. I have read that to use dual cards with Vista they need to use the same drivers (169.25), which they do. Even if that wasn't the case shouldn't the graphics card show in device manager regardless?
Is there something about Vista and dual graphics that i am missing?
The 7600GT functions fine, (tested in another computer) so i am at a loss here.

I've just installed Vista Business x64, however I do have some problems setting up the Dual monitors. I have: On the left a Dell 2005FPW, which is pivoted (to read PDFs and stuff like that easier) On the right a Samsung 226BW, which set to normal. However, when I go to the NVIDIA setup, and try to tell which monitor is where and which should be the primary display. The primary display always tends to be placed on the left side in the software. I want the Dell to be the extended display, while the Samsung is the primary display. But the software (either in Vista or the NVIDIA driver itself) insist on that both the primary and the first mentioned display is the same.

After months of flawless performance my WMC is acting up on one TV channel and I can't figure out why. The only change recently was that I enabled the DVD Library to be displayed with a registry hack as per a seemingly reliable article I read.
This is only happening the first time after I boot. I call up WMC and go to the TV Guide. If I select Channel 50 (only) it will not tune in and I get a screen that says "Cannot Play Program" "The channel may not be supported. If you cannot tune to any other channel, restart WMC or restart the computer, then try again"
If I then use the guide to go down or up one channel they play OK and returning to ch50 - it then plays fine. Very odd. The registry tweak was, I realised afterwards, unnecessary as I'm not using this machine as a media center anyway and I'm not sure what the original setting was.

since nobody can fix my memory issue, i decided to run vista on my PC. everything went smooth, except when i leave my computer and the monitor goes into "power save" and turns off. when i move the mouse / press a key on the keyboard to turn the monitor back on, one of my screens goes all green and has scanlines running across from it, and its all jagged. when this happens, i cannot even log back into vista, or see anything for that matter. i have no choice but to manuall reboot the computer and log back in. the multi monitor support in vista really sucks, so i installed my nvidia drivers to see if i could use the nvidia multi monitor support and i cannot even find my nvidia control panel. anyways, as a last resort, i installed ultramon, which is a 3rd party multi monitor support program which seemed to work fairly well. but then, when the monitor goes into power save again...the same stupid thing happens.i have currently given up running two monitors with vista, and im running just one until the whole monitor scanline problem goes away.

I have a Dell desktop computer & a Aser laptop, both running Vista Home Premium. I have a HP Officejet 6110 all-in-one printer. I also have a wireless router. From the desktop computer I can print just fine but I cannot print from my laptop. I have tried Adding a New Printer. It runs through all the steps. I have tried selecting "use an existing port" and when that didn't work I started over and chose "create a new port". Both times it looks like it is going to work. At the end you can choose to print a test page." However, it never actually prints a test page. I do not get any sort of error. If I go to file, print, it shows my hp6110 listed and it is highlighted but nothing happens. Can someone tell me exactly what I need to do to be able to print from my laptop? I'm somewhat dense to all the terms and jargin so please be specific. This forum is the only place I have ever been able to come to get answers that really work.

Im looking for information regarding the best way to configure a dual boot system using Vista Ultimate and XpPro. What is the best way to set up the two 320gig 7200rpm HHD's? Should both hard drive areas be combined and then partitioned or would you recommend one operating system per drive? OS are Vistax64 and XpPro.

I have (or had) Vista Business on my HP Pavilion dv2670br and I also installed opensolaris on it. I had read this article (Vista SP1 won't install on dual-boot systems: Microsoft) before installing the SP with the stand alone file downloaded from MS's website, but since I did not have Enterprise or Ultimate I didn't think I would have problems. Silly me.
Now I do not know if it is the grub loader itself or the fact that opensolaris uses ZFS. I tried going through the steps here: Recovering the Vista Bootloader from the DVD - NeoSmart Technologies Wiki, to no avail. I suspect I will have to go through a very destructive process, but thankfully I won't really lose much since it is a relatively new laptop with very little university work on it.

I have a laptop with a 320 gig hard drive divided into 4 partitions. I am dual booting Xp Professional and Vista Business 32 bit Edition. I plan on upgrading to Ultimate as soon as Microsoft ships it to me. I have 2 partitons for XP, 1 for vista, and 1 as a shared partition that has mydocuments and email settings so that both systems can access them. If I use Complete PC Backup and select all partitions will this backup everything ot a 500 gig external, including the boot records so that if I do oa complete pc restore it will restore it so that my boot menu is restoreed in the event of a hd failure? Also, when I get vista ultimate, I plan on using Bit Locker to encrypt my Vista partition. Will that affect the complete pc backup of that partition or any of the others?

I have a dual boot system: XP PRO on drive C and Vista Home Premium on drive B. I want to replace my hardrive, and move (or clone) Vista to new drive and be it C drive. Vista is still virgin and not other programs are installed, so changing it location from D to C drive will not influance any applications. I know how to create hard drive image. My question is how to make that new c drive with Vista on it bootable again.

I have Acronis True Image and before I went the dual boot system route (XP + Vista x64), I made an image of my XP system but now that I am comfortable with both OS's, I would like to know if Acronis can make an image of my drive including both systems?
Before attempting to do this on my own and botching the already good image I have, I would like to hear it from the Gurus so... what say you? Oh, also, I have heard that Acronis can do this but nobody specified if I should start Acronis in Vista or in XP and that is another thing that baffles me. It shouldn't matter where I start the image process but making sure is my first priority since I tend to screw up things fairly quick when I go out guns blazing (so to speak!)

I have a dual-boot setup. Volume C runs Vista Home Premium. Volume F runs Vista Ultimate. (Vol. D is a recovery volume.) I would like to blow away C: and boot only from F. Would the following be a possible/advisable solution?
1. Boot from F.
2. Delete C.
3. Rename F "C".
4. Expand F (the new "C") to include the old C.

I am upgrading my computer system and am planning to dual-boot Vista and Vista 64 - I have a lot of older applications which may not work well (or at all) on the 64-bit OS, but I will also be doing a fair amount of video processing, which will run much better with the larger amount of memory accessible under Vista 64. I would like a copy of Office 2007 to be accessible and usable under both OSes. Obviously, it would need to be installed separately under each one, but would it be OK to install it to the same directory (not on either boot disk) under each one, or are some different files installed under the two OSes, necessitating two completely separate install directories.

I think after this update: Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB968389) …my dual monitor video card: PNY VCG86GTS5XWB-OC GeForce 8600 GTS 512MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card …sometimes does not bring the second monitor on after waking from S3 sleep. It’s still in dual screen mode as I can see a taskbar window fly to the second monitor. But I have to sleep and wake again to get it to come back on. Anyone else experience something like this? I don’t remember it ever happening before and was wondering if it could be the patch.

I just read on another thread that my Phenom may not support triple channel. Does this mean we can't have 3 2GB sticks in the slots and we should get one more to even things up? (we had originally bought a 3 pack and I don't know if we can buy a single stick of that type here). I then read that having 4 sticks of DDR3 in can cause problems too - now I don't know what to believe

I have Vista Home Premium. I have two Hauppauge 1600s and a Nvidia 8600GTS. I have been receiving all my local digital OTA channels just fine since getting this machine 6 months ago, and now suddenly the local CBS affiliate, channel 4.1, is gone. Just gone. Dead. I get nothing but the No TV Signal blue screen. When I go to settings and check the digital signal strength, it is totally dead. The dreaded red bar. All other channels come in at six green bars, just like 4.1 did until this past monday.
I have tried re-setting up the guide, I have tried recording one digital channel while trying to view 4.1 to check if it's just tuner 1. Both times I get the blue screen. I then took the cable out of one of the tuner cards and ran it directly into my TV and the signal comes in almost perfectly. Why is the signal suddenly gone on just one channel?
