View 9 Repliesever since planning on a new pc build i knew at some point that id want to install vista on it. Ive planned to get vista 64 seeing as i have a machine capable of running a 64 bit o/s with ease (when i buy my extra 2gb of ram along with my copy of vista) I have been doing my research on which of my games ill still be able to play & tbh the only ones that im remotely worried about are older than red orchestra so no problems there.
My only real concern is the drivers for my belkin wireless card (f5d7001uk) which doesnt have any vista 32 drivers! But ive heard a rumour that vista automatically installs the drivers itself?? Im also worried that some of the useful little apps i have installed wont install such as winrar, wavepad, deepburner pro 1.8 & punkbuster
While being satisfied by the cool effects and new interface of Windows Vista Codename Longhorn, many of us testers are what you would call "gamers." The lot of us would like to know if gaming on the default Vista Supplemental drivers would mean loss of graphics quality compared to using up to date drivers on a XP OS. For example, I installed Vista and then installed my trusty game, Battlefield 2. I tried using the new nvidia Vista drivers but the game kept crashing when I start it up. So I reinstalled the Vista Supplemental drivers and it happened to work. Quite interesting. I am able to run the game on default vista drivers and not the nvidia vista drivers. Coming to conclusion, would using the vista drivers result in loss of quality and graphics compared to using up to date drivers on a XP system? Or you can also rephrase it; Would gaming be better on the Vista Beta or XP? Does anyone know if SLI works on Vista?

View 4 Replies View RelatedWhy are useless "applications", business people could give two flying craps about, like MOVIE MAKER - I spent half hour to delete because it required me to gain Ownership and assign Full Control to that folder before the pest could be deleted (100MB+ freed!), why are they included.
But useful applications ar enot, nowadays?
The VolumeControl is abhorrent comparing to WinXP.
But now I hear Win7 won't include Email Client?
I have to download separately?
Is that due to antitrust/antimonopoly regulations?
If so, can Microsoft please to ALSO not include goddamn MovieMaker, PhotoGallery, etc. and leave it for download for people who care about crapware?
Can Microsoft NOT include other dubious applications, if Email is removed.
Or at least do NOT crate pest foledrs which can't be deleted w;/o resorting to DOS tools or elaborate file killing techniques as I was forced to w/WinPhotoGallery?
What is more important - an Email Client or yet another image/video player or another shiny useless object (useless for busieness & educated people who work, not play on computers)?
Did a search of groups carried by my news server and could not find a windows 7 group.

View 7 Replies View RelatedExpect to get a new PC as soon as te new ones come out with Windows7 installed in late Oct. Presently using OE 6 and XP. Trying to learn about some of this now, though. Imagine the transferring problem is the same for Vista as it will be for Windows7 probably.
I guess I will be forced to use Windows Live rather than OE with Windows7 My needs are simple, and OE has done everything I require, but I understand that Windows Live is a pretty basic one also. Is it possible to transfer all my saved OE Folder files like SENT, etc. from OE to Windows Live (easily) ?
Read a brief mention that if you go to OE/ TOOLS/ OPTIONS/ MAINT. there is "some" way of creating a folder with all the stuff you want to transfer, and then loading it into WindowsLive. A bit on in years now, so please bear with me. Is this the (best and easiest) way to do it, or?
I'm assembling the components to upgrade this machine (it is a 939 mobo with a nForce3 chip and early releases of Windows7 didn't play well with the chipset). I'm not a gamer, I don't need the latest and greatest cpu and I don't plan on any overclocking. The most demanding things I do are video recoding of HDTV, some audio recoding and some simple image editing.
I already have a mobo that takes AM3 processors and DDR2 memory. I'm considering a Athlon II x4 or a Phenom II x3 both running at 2.6. They are about the same price and the only difference, other than the cores, is the L3 cache. The Athlons don't have any and the Phenoms have 6 MB. What are your opinions? Will I see any difference in the performance in my real world situations?
Could anyone please help me uninstall windows 7 and retain pre-installed Vista ultimate?
Could formatting the windows 7 partition from Vista solve the issue?
I dont have the installation disc for vista. I was provided only with the vista recovery disc.
There is a new newsgroup on the *Microsoft* newsgroup server: (msnews.microsoft.com). The "IT" is not information technology, it's Italian! Ok, I'm all for supporting alternative languages, but why is *Microsoft* hosting a Windows7 newsgroup in Italian whereas they will not support a Windows 7 newsgroup in (the universal language of the web) English?

I'm trying to do the in-place upgrade - Vista Home Premium to W7 Home Premium. It says: "The following issues are preventing Windows from upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the upgrade to continue. There is not enough free space to store temporary Windows installation files. Try using Disk Cleanup, uninstall old programs, or move files to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive." I just installed a new 320 gb hard drive and restored Vista on it. It works perfectly. 220 drive C: and about 80 gb D: so there should be no problem I checked each drive's properties to make sure each had much unused space - I came from an 80 gb disk.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI cannot get my 64 bit vista machine to connect to a printer connected to my 32 bit XP machine. I have read all kinds of advice on various forums and the microsoft support site but nothing seems to work. Both computers have been networked for some time, I am able to share files and folders, both computers see the other in their network folder. I have pinged the printer, the other computer back and forth and everything is OK. I can see the network printer connected to the host computer but when I try to connect, I get the message that the server does not have the correct driver(s) installed. The printer prints fine from the XP machine.
When I tried to install the drivers on the Vista machine I was told by HP that they do not have a full version of the drivers for my 64 bit macnhine but could only provide basic drivers which I downloaded and installed. I have tried creating a new port with the host computer name and printer name but all I get is the network path cannot be found. I have followed some of the suggestions for similiar problems on this site where people have had success but those ideas just don't work. The printer is a HP Photosmart 7960 which I have had for several years. Right now I am at my wits end and ready to go back and start over, maybe I missed something minor.
When you turn on file and printer sharing, both file and printer sharing are turned on. Is there a way to turn on printer sharing only? by default, c$ is always shared on windows XP pro, I am not sure about vista/windows 7 home premium. So there is some security risk with file sharing, while there is less risk with printer sharing.
The PCs are behind the firewall, however, there is a possibility that the PC used by the kids have trojan or are even hijacked (anti-virus are installed but it's still not that secure). So I only want to share the printer.
My client is having difficulties sharing files between two computers. The server PC is running Vista Ultimate SP1 and the client is running Vista Business SP1. Access to files in a subfolder under the built-in Users share seem normal. However, when I setup a new folder directly off the C: drive and shared it, files and folders are not reliably accessible from another PC.
Eventually, I want to restrict the new share to specific users, but initially, I set it up where the Everyone group is a co-owner. After the client computer starts up, it can access all files in the new share normally. However, after about 30 minutes of use, file access slows down. There is a delay of a few minutes sometimes before the close, delete or modify task finishes. Sometimes, the client PC hangs indefinitely and must be shut down.
I know this is a Vista news group but I haven't been able to find a Windows 7 group so maybe one of you guys can answer my question. I have the power settings to never put computer or screen to sleep and there is no screen saver setup. When I leave my computer alone for awhile the screen goes black. This never happened with Vista when setup this way why is Windows 7 doing this?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a small network with 4 pcs. 1 is Vista 64, two XP Pro and 1 W2K. Peer

The net browser is the W2K machine.
I had to change the chassis of 1 XP Pro box because of heating. everything
was phisically moved to another chassis, no OS change watsoever, nor
component changes. Now, both XPs and the W2K can see shares in each other
normally, as before, and they even can see shares on the Vista box.
But the Vista started behaving in a wierd manner:
Vista to W2K: sees shares normally
Vista to WXP Pro not modified Sees shares normally
Vista to WXP Pro with new chassis: The XP does not recognize the vista User

XP and Vista, created a New user in both machines with and without password,
and still the XP refuses to recognize the Vista credentials.

View 6 Replies View RelatedWe have vista on both desktop (office-pc) and wireless laptop (daniel-pc) and a canon mp830 connected to the desktop pc. Desktop has macafee with firewall off and laptop had pc-cillin with firewall off. Both machines have identical sharing & discovery settings (no passwords), and the printer is shared. Both pc's see the other's files and printer. I plugged the MP830 into the laptop and let vista install the drivers.
When the printer is connected to the desktop pc, and I try to connect from the laptop, I get the 0x00000012 error. I then followed the advice in this forum and tried to create a local port on the laptop printer as \office-pcCanon830 and I get 'access denied'. Now, here's the thing, I plugged the printer into the laptop and tried to connect to it from the desktop. I clicked START, NETWORK, Daniel-pc and then right clicked the printer and clicked connect and IT DID. I then printed a document from the desktop to the printer connected to the laptop.
Next i uninstalled the printer from the desktop and then plugged it back in and let vista install the drivers as I had the laptop, thinking that perhaps there was a snag in the Canon software. I also downloaded the vista driver from Canon as I had done for the laptop. But when I tried to connect the desktop printer from the laptop, I once again got the 0X00000012 error. I've been round and round with this for a week and i must be missing some little thing.
