View 6 RepliesIt has happened occasionally, but with no predictability that I can see. I change settings in control pannel / power settings / balanced to 10 min for monitor and never for computer. I check the "advanced settings" to assure that they are the same. I use balanced because that seems to be the default in the registry. I do not see the actual settings in the registry. Every so often Vista resets the settings back to 20 min for the monitor. I have looked at but it speaks of "System Settings page" - I don't know what that is. In any case, my settings have no effect and I can't get the monitor to dependably go to standby after 10 minutes.

I want do get the registry entry so I can apply this to multiple machines in my domain using a logon script. Please dont' tell me to go to Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization. I know to do that. Just need to know the key(s) I have to change to make it permanent for every user who logs on.

View 9 Replies View RelatedOk well let's begin. My father n law has a HP machine with Vista on it. Ever since he purchased it he when viewing webpage's, the headers and stuff like words overlap each other and it is very hard to read. Now it is not on all webpage's but on most, and it is not the main text. For instance when you log onto EBAY, all the links on the left under Shop Your Favorite Categories are messed up. The clickable words are on top of each other yet spread out a little. Please help me out so we can get this resolved. I tried to adjust the display setting for a larger screen but that did not work. His screen settings are maxed out. I think 1440x900 @ 32 bit. I know this really does not make a whole lot of sense but it is hard to explain.

View 4 Replies View RelatedA while back I had wi fi working on my laptop. The problem I have now is that I had to reload and start over because of numerous infections (trojans, & viruses & malware etc.). I have a Netgear router with setup information that was previously installed. I went into Control Panel / Network connections And tried to activate wireless network connect 3 and it said acquiring network address Intel(R) Pro/wireless 3945ABG Network Connection. I chose /clicked on the network I had previously installed and clicked on Connect.
The wireless network connection box came up and asked me for the network key. It already had a blanked out key in the 2 boxes so I clicked on connect and it scanned and said acquiring network address. The problem is that it never acquires the address and puts a red X on the icon by the clock.
i was having some trouble setting up an ad hoc network on my computer... (i have a vista home premium computer).. anyway, it seems that the "set up an adhoc (computer to computer) network option is not available
the options that are available are:
connect to the internet
set up a wireless router or access point
set up a dial-up connection
connect to a workplace
how do i make it so the set up an adhoc (computer to computer) network option is available? (if it helps any, im trying to set one up so i can access the internet on my ipod touch)
is there any way I change the settings in IE7, whenever it opens a new window, it is not maximized to the full screen size. I would ideally prefer all new windows to open as tabs in my current browser, and not as new pop up windows.

I have eVGA Precision (GPU overclocking and monitoring software) set not to run at startup. but to start and up the default videocard fan speed. then it closes, its a setting in the program. So i have it set to turn up the fan speed at startup. but the program doesn't continue to run. BUTTTT everytime i start the PC the annoying UAC pops up instantly wanting me to "allow" evga precision to run. So can I setit to ALWAYS allow it.. without disabling the UAC

I've just got a new computer with Vista. I want to set up a dual boot system so that I can also access XP.
I have read that this is much easier to do if XP is the first OS, followed by installing Vista, but I can't do that.
I have also read that it can still be done by creating a new partition from within Vista, then installing XP into that. I understand that this process will overwrite the Vista boot loader and the computer will then only boot into XP, but that a programme called VistaBoot PRO can then be used to reset that, and you are then left with dual-booting.
But has anyone had any experience of doing this? Or are there any foreseeable problems.
E.g. - when I start installing XP, will it need access to the motherboard/graphics card drivers?
One thing I'm wondering about is, at the stage where I can only boot into XP, the hard disk is a SATA one (no RAID set up) and I seem to recall XP having issues with these at boot-up?
I'm having some trouble setting up a network in my home. Here's the deal, I've got my laptop running VistaHomePr 64 and my Desktop running XP Pro 32. I recently got a wireless netgear router. My notebook connects wirelessly through the router while my desktop connects to the router through an ethernet cable. (The router has both wired ports and wireless transmitter)
Now, before I installed the wirless router, I had the two computers networked (and working properly) through a dynex wired router. Now I'm having trouble getting them to see each other. I'm not even sure if you can network computers while one is wireless and one is wired. I just figured it could be done since it was all going through one router.
Just turned on the Guest Account for the first time. When I switch to this account, the desktop comes up with a bunch of misc blanked-out icons which it will not allow me to delete. And there's a blizzard of "Windows cannot open this file" messages - for shortcut links and for ..exe files including rundll32, issch, eullauncher, sttray, etc. How do I clean this up and start the Guest acct with a blank desktop?

In VERY simple terms, how do you set up the blasted "server address" in order to send mail? I received all the spam they sent me just fine, but when I try to send mail, I get nothing but error messages about the POP server address.
I looked in these threads, and every answer seems to be using words and terms you need years of computer training to understand. I don't have that training, I'm merely an intelligent person trying to set up my email account.
So how do you enter or correct this stupid business about POP3 servers and so on?
I got the information from my ISP, they gave me two lines,
outgoing mail, (SMTP):SMTP.comcast.net
incoming mail, (POP3):mail.comcast.net
I tried to enter this stuff in the fields, but it still won't work, this whole setup process is VERY complicated and impossible for me to follow.
So can somebody pleae tell me, in simple plain english, what is the exact procedure you use to type in the server addresses for incoming and outgoing mail?
I'm using Vista Home Premium edition. After last automatic upgrade my IE was not able to connect to the internet.Troubleshooter returned the following message:

I am trying to set up a small network but having some difficulties – it does not work - I have done everything I think I should have done but still it does not work. OK what I have is two desktop machines DT (1) and DT(2) running XP Pro I think with SP2 – dont think I have SP3 and a nice four port O2 wirelessrouter which seems to be a Thomson Telecoms product and lovely new and shiny New Toshiba Tecra M10 running Vista Business. I am running ZoneAlarm as my firewall.
At the movement my main DT PC (1) is the only XP PC connected - obviously using Cat 5 cable and the Toshiba Laptop is also connected using Cat 5 cable. I did the XP set up a home network wizard and that seemed to be OK. I have set both the DT (1) and the LT to be on the same workgroup and on the DT (1) when I go to My Networks and then workgroup I can see (icons for) both the DT (1) and the LT.
I have multiple LARGE drives on the DT (1) and this is why I want the other DT (2) machine on the network to use as a fileserver – i have what must be close to a trillion pictures that i want to sort out - the work of a lifetime and a lifetimes work and i still have years of negatives to scan and sort I will then move all (apart from one) HDD’s to the second DT (2)............
I have verizon 1 main account and 2 sub accounts. I was able to set the 2 sub accounts up with no problem but the main one for the life of me I can't figure out how to get it set up. It keeps giving me a port 110 error which I am understanding is a known issue. Has anyone else been able to get it fixed or know where I can look to fix it. I really need this set up and its driving me crazy.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have Vista home premium installed on my Toshiba Qosmio G35-AV600 laptop. I have two 80GB hard drives with C: setup as a RAID drive. After installing Vista the two drives show up as C: and E: whereas in XP Service Pack 3 they showed up as one spanned volume C: totalling 160GB. This is the way I want it to show up in Vista. My question then is how do I achieve this? My second hard drive was empty so I reformatted drive E: thinking that I would be given the option to create a spanned volume, but it is greyed out.
When I open my Toshiba RAID console, it shows two hard drives but Drive C: or Disk 0 is listed as RAID whereas drive E: or Disk 1 is listed as "JBOD (Not RAID)". I'm at a loss as to how to fix this and was also wondering if it is best to just leave it as it is. What are the advantages/disadvantages of setting up one RAID spanned drive?

can i change a setting on both my desktop (Ultimate) and laptop (Premium) so that either can "wake" the other? I know i can set the network card to "wake on LAN", but i tried that and i believe the machine (desktop) never went to sleep because the card was always active since i'm on a cable modem that's always on (memory is a little fuzzy on that, its been a while). Basically, i want to be able to access and wake either machine that may be "sleeping" without physically going to that location to wiggle the mouse, as it were.
