Protecting Backup Data Files

Dec 28, 2009

I recently bought an external, portable hard-drive to use partly for backup, partly for mobility. It connects to the usb and I can copy files & folders back & forth, no problem. Some of the files contain confidential data. If the drive was lost or stolen it might be embarrasing. What are the best ways of protecting the data on an external drive?

Data Recovery: Files Are Missing

Dec 28, 2008

I recently rebuilt my machine (see system specs) and when I went to pop in my old HDD as a secondary drive to pull some files from it, Windows decided it needed to run chkdsk on it. I tried to stop it, as this is a 500GB drive so I knew it would take forever, but I couldn't stop it. So after a few hours, it finished and let me in, but now all of the files are missing. This was my old C: (primary) drive, so it should have Windows, Users, Program Data, etc folders but it doesn't. it just has a few empty folders (Nvidia, Intel...) However when you check the properties of the disk, it shows that several GB's are used, so I know my data is around there somewhere. Changing the folder options to view hidden does not help. The OS on this disk was Vista Ultimate 32-bit.

Reinstalling Vista Erase Existing Files Could Not Save Data

Sep 17, 2008

I may have to re-install the Vista operating system on my primary hard drive. According to Dell, installing/re-installing Vista will erase any existing files (gee, why couldn't they have configured Vista like XP which would save your data?).So as not to loose my files, my plan is to install a new primary hard drive. And once the new drive is functioning properly, to add the old one as a data only secondary drive (The drive hasn't failed, it's just inaccessable due to a user logon password issue which I'm working in another thread). Does anyone see a problem with reading the data files/folders on the old drive? Will the existance of an operating system be a problem? I'm hoping the drive will act as a ghosted drive, and the answer will be no.

Won't Copy The Data

Sep 19, 2009

So I just got a new computer, a HP Pavilion running Vista, and I have a older hard drive that I want to copy data from. The hard drive came from a system running XP. It's a older hard drive, a Seagate 80 gig IDE connector hard drive, so I went out and bought a external hard drive device bay -- you just put the hard drive into it and then plug it into a USB port on my computer. If I plug it in, all that happens is every 10 seconds I get a pop up a message saying: "You need to format the disk in Drive J before you can use it. Do you want to format it?" Of course I don't want to format it, I'd lose the data I'm trying to copy! If I click cancel it just keeps bugging me about it and I can't access the HD.

Data Transfer

Oct 7, 2009

I have a HP desktop running Vista premium. I "had" an Emachine that ran XP, but it died. (I think the power supply went out) Whatever the case I am not going to get the XP computer fixed, but I do want some files off the old harddrive out of it. How do I do that? I'm hearing of a USB adapter of some sort that will do it...is that true? I went on Ebay, saw some USB's but am not sure they will do what I need for them to do.

Burning A Data DVD

Jun 21, 2008

I'm on windows ultimate.. I need to burn a DATA DVD.. for some reason this is proving a challenge.. you can't do it w/WMC, as it doesn't afford possibility of browsing to folders you want to burn. my roxio 10 isn't letting me do it either (when I go to "Data and Backup" I get to a window where under "Data Disc" it says, "Easily create and bun a data CD or DVD or save a disc image to your hard drive"... so I click on this "Data Disc" link, choose folder, click on yellow button at bottom right ("click this button to continue") but it just hangs. nothing happens.. (and yes I do have a blank DVD loaded in the drive...)

just downloaded a trial version of nero.. same thing, you can do all sorts of fancy stuff, like burn music DVD's, movies, video, do fancy menus, slideshows, etc.. but I want none of that, I just want to burn a bunch of JPG's to a DVD (A LOT of them actually, only reason need to burn them on a DVD instead of a regular data CD is that it's so many images that I would have to burn about four CD's to burn all the images I want to burn..) I just want a DATA DVD that when user inserts it in the machine they can browse the files. but this is proving a bit difficult, which is a bit strange, I mean this is a very simple thing. how can I do this..

I mainly noticed it because I just set up a xp for file backup and its not running a firewall (not even windows firewall) and the data transfer is taking forever.

Cannot Access Data

Nov 10, 2008

I am really unsure of this and I have seen some similar threads. Apparently, the attributes to my User folder were adjusted. This has changed the items on my desktop and affected my ability to get my docs and pictures. My user folder is prop'ing at 6 gb, so I know the data is still there. However, I cannot access it. I saw a few threads that mention changing Read only and hidden, but I don't know what to trust. I tried creating an Admin account, and setting ownership to (MyUsername), but the items are nowhere to be found.

Moving Data From The Xp Machine

Feb 6, 2009

I replaced it with a Vista pc. I thought that I would have no problem moving my data because on my other setup, I had kept all of my 'stuff' on a separate HDD (partitioned into 4 parts). Once I had gotten my Vista up & running, I felt ready to move-in my data drive from the xp machine. When I cracked open the case, I found that it was a sata setup -- my data drive was ide.

I got this Addonics IDE to Serial ATA Converter to 'make it work'. This converter is a small circuit board that plugs into the ide connection on the hard drive. You use all leads from a Y power plug to power the ide hard drive & the circuit board (the circuit board uses the small floppy) a sata wire plugs into the circuit board & into your motherboard. I changed the mode select from cable to master. (as directed in the feeble instructions) On my motherboard there are 4 sata plugins. 1 is my primary HDD. 2 was my DVD. I plugged the converted ide drive into 3. When I started up Vista. I got a black screen. I let it set for about 3-4 minutes........

I'm using Windows Vista. Whenever I create a new folder, It has "tabs", like "Name Date Modified Type Size", which are not spread out to the length of my window by default; I need to do it myself each time. Uninstall Without Loosing Data?

Mar 23, 2008

I have this itching feeling to try and see how my system runs on Vista x86-64. For that I _WANT_ to do the following. If I can't do it the way I want it, I want to uninstall Windows Vista x86-32 without re-formatting/repartioning my primary HDD partition where Vista is currently installed. This way I can proceed to install Vista x86-64 without having to worry about my Movies, Audio and Video data already on the drive getting wiped out! Can it be done? Oh, btw, the current install is a fresh, clean install about 4 months old, and the 2 OS [xp and vista] are oblivious to one another [i.e., i dont have an OS choice menu. To boot into Vista, I select my 160 GB at boot-up and for XP, I select my 40GB]. And, I would like my Vista x86-64 to follow in the same footsteps.

Corrupt Data & Cannot Update

Apr 24, 2009

I run on Windows Vista Business x64 SP1. I was updating a while back, and an update failed with an error code. So I followed the error code in Windows Help and Support, and it asked me to delete all the updates in my update folder and then try updating again. I did that, and now update gives me the 80070424 code, which is access denied.

So, here are the solutions I tried: sfc /scannow (cmd prompt was in admin) It does find corrupt files, except it can't start Windows Repair Service to repair it. So I tried going into Services.msc to turn Windows Modules Installer to Manual. However, since I technically "never updated", that is not in Services..................

NLS Data Is Missing, Cannot Repair

Feb 17, 2009

A reboot after yesterday's updates confronted me with an NLS error; booting from the Vista SP1 DVD, Windows RE was unable to automatically correct the error. I then ran a chkdsk /r, which found minor data corruption and fixed it, apparently. An automatic repair still didn't work, so I went to the command prompt.

bootrec /scanos found nothing. However, when i deleted c:ootsd, bootrec /scanos found the installation. I then ran bootrec /rebuildbcd, which found the installation and allowed me to add it to the BSD. However, bootrec /scanos then found no os, and a reboot took me back to the NLS error. Command prompt : deleted BCD, bootrec /rebuildbcd, bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /fixboot - still NLS data missing on reboot.

I tried an SFC from the command prompt, but it couldn't run, companing about services not running. It appears that all the data is present on the drive; I'd just like to be able to boot!
