Cannot Access Data
Nov 10, 2008
I am really unsure of this and I have seen some similar threads. Apparently, the attributes to my User folder were adjusted. This has changed the items on my desktop and affected my ability to get my docs and pictures. My user folder is prop'ing at 6 gb, so I know the data is still there. However, I cannot access it. I saw a few threads that mention changing Read only and hidden, but I don't know what to trust. I tried creating an Admin account, and setting ownership to (MyUsername), but the items are nowhere to be found.

I am Vista business 32bit user. MYOB ver 9 accounting software runs fine on my ex-window XP computer but not on Vista. The software installs OK but cannot access data files, new files or those that came on the install CD for learning purposes.
Installed to all defaults. When I try to open a data file nothing happens.

One minute it was working, then next minute it wasnt. The Flash drive is a 16GB USB 2.0 made by ByteStor. I have poked around various places, but no software ive come across works - so far. It is recognized by any PC I shove it into as a drive of some sort - But it cant be accessed, whilst claiming it has no space or storage.

I have an Acer laptop which came with Vista Home Premium installed. I set up a password on the Personal Secure Disk (PSD) and put some of my genealogy data in there. When I come to access the data the system tells me I have used an incorrect password. Now I know I have the correct password - something has gone wrong. Are there any clever hacks developed to get into the PSD by evading the password protection?

Data Protection is a counterfeit application which pretends to be a legitimate security tool. It is also from the same rogue family as Digital Protection, Your Protection, User Protection, Dr. Guard and Paladin Antivirus. The trojan based software starts its activities as soon as it installs onto your computer. Malware has no ability to detect and terminate the parasite. It only gains that user lose their vigilance and would buy a registered version of Data Protection application.
This is a fraud and dangerous for your computer. Behind an offer stands bad people who will use your money for malicious intentions. This application is not worth spending your money. As any malware this one will scan your computer automatically and will show fake results. You should ignore it. Do not fall for this blatant scam. Data Protection can also redirect your web browser to deceptive web pages that advertises “full” version of the security tool. Do not buy it, but choose decent anti-spyware application and terminate Data Protection upon detection. - the conclusion is that Malware bytes does remove it,, you need to download the lastest malware byte or update the one you got. I try to access folders under my name (set up as administrator), most of the time I get access denied. It is driving me nuts. I want to change the start menu and get rid of a bunch of garbage but I can't enter the folder to do so. When I use the start menu program, it only has a few basic folders. This happens frequently, even when trying to view pictures or video in the folder. What do I need to change to remove this very annoying problem?

I have my laptop connecting to a server under AD control. My laptop is not joined to AD by design. I set up some files using 'Sync' to have them available to me offline. My AD password has since changed and I cannot connect to the server to have access to other files set up for offline access. When I attempt to remap the drive, I get an error stating I am already connected using the credentials provided. This is not true, since I cannot access the server. What do I need to do to fix this problem?

I think I might have a good one for you.. I am working on an Acer 5610z Notebook for a friend of mine. He was setting the parental controls and managed to control his account which had admin access. the user listing has the account listing as an admin but he only has standard user access. His was the "only" admin account.. While he was doing this he managed to deny access to the boot drive. The drive reads as "Access Denied". The machine boots up and a person can play games etc.. but network access is restricted.

Our Vista laptops (& my Xbox) access our basic Windows Home Server system through a Netgear router. It's all fine, but I want to (easily & quickly!) restrict & control when some laptops can access the internet while allowing free access to the server. (For instance, so children's internet access can be monitored but they can always get to photos & backups, etc. on the server.)

So I just got a new computer, a HP Pavilion running Vista, and I have a older hard drive that I want to copy data from. The hard drive came from a system running XP. It's a older hard drive, a Seagate 80 gig IDE connector hard drive, so I went out and bought a external hard drive device bay -- you just put the hard drive into it and then plug it into a USB port on my computer. If I plug it in, all that happens is every 10 seconds I get a pop up a message saying: "You need to format the disk in Drive J before you can use it. Do you want to format it?" Of course I don't want to format it, I'd lose the data I'm trying to copy! If I click cancel it just keeps bugging me about it and I can't access the HD.

I have a HP desktop running Vista premium. I "had" an Emachine that ran XP, but it died. (I think the power supply went out) Whatever the case I am not going to get the XP computer fixed, but I do want some files off the old harddrive out of it. How do I do that? I'm hearing of a USB adapter of some sort that will do it...is that true? I went on Ebay, saw some USB's but am not sure they will do what I need for them to do.

I'm on windows ultimate.. I need to burn a DATA DVD.. for some reason this is proving a challenge.. you can't do it w/WMC, as it doesn't afford possibility of browsing to folders you want to burn. my roxio 10 isn't letting me do it either (when I go to "Data and Backup" I get to a window where under "Data Disc" it says, "Easily create and bun a data CD or DVD or save a disc image to your hard drive"... so I click on this "Data Disc" link, choose folder, click on yellow button at bottom right ("click this button to continue") but it just hangs. nothing happens.. (and yes I do have a blank DVD loaded in the drive...)
just downloaded a trial version of nero.. same thing, you can do all sorts of fancy stuff, like burn music DVD's, movies, video, do fancy menus, slideshows, etc.. but I want none of that, I just want to burn a bunch of JPG's to a DVD (A LOT of them actually, only reason need to burn them on a DVD instead of a regular data CD is that it's so many images that I would have to burn about four CD's to burn all the images I want to burn..) I just want a DATA DVD that when user inserts it in the machine they can browse the files. but this is proving a bit difficult, which is a bit strange, I mean this is a very simple thing. how can I do this..

I got as far as connecting the transfer cable on both computers. The action lights flickered on both for about 15min and then they stopped. I waited for another half an hour but nothing further was happening, so I eliminated the transfer Windows. I found that no data has been transferred although both have Win.Vista Business.

I have 2 vista and 2 xp mechines on my network. When I transfer files between my 2 vista mechines I see transfer rates between 5 and 7 mgs, but when transfering from vista to xp I'm lucky if I see 1 mg. I mainly noticed it because I just set up a xp for file backup and its not running a firewall (not even windows firewall) and the data transfer is taking forever.

I replaced it with a Vista pc. I thought that I would have no problem moving my data because on my other setup, I had kept all of my 'stuff' on a separate HDD (partitioned into 4 parts). Once I had gotten my Vista up & running, I felt ready to move-in my data drive from the xp machine. When I cracked open the case, I found that it was a sata setup -- my data drive was ide.
I got this Addonics IDE to Serial ATA Converter to 'make it work'. This converter is a small circuit board that plugs into the ide connection on the hard drive. You use all leads from a Y power plug to power the ide hard drive & the circuit board (the circuit board uses the small floppy) a sata wire plugs into the circuit board & into your motherboard. I changed the mode select from cable to master. (as directed in the feeble instructions) On my motherboard there are 4 sata plugins. 1 is my primary HDD. 2 was my DVD. I plugged the converted ide drive into 3. When I started up Vista. I got a black screen. I let it set for about 3-4 minutes........

I jus got a new laptop and was using the easy transfer cable from XP to Vista. I transferred the programs, but when I open them up on the new laptop, one says a required registration key was not found. Another program needs a serial number.....aren't these supposed to come over in the transfer? I downloaded the one program needing a registration key and it did not install correctly.

I'm using Windows Vista. Whenever I create a new folder, It has "tabs", like "Name Date Modified Type Size", which are not spread out to the length of my window by default; I need to do it myself each time. I was wondering if I could set the length of each "tab", to be created automatically. I hope I'm getting my point across fine. It's my intention to separate my data from the OS by making a move to another partition. The question in my mind is, move only the documents folder, or is there more that should be moved also? Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach a person to use the internet and they won't bother you for weeks.

i would like to switch from 32 bit vista ultimate to 64 bit because i want to upgrade to 4GB of RAM and be able to use all of it to it's fullest. Right now i have 2 paritions on my single HDD. 1 is my back-up windows xp partition, it is also the larger of the 2 so i put most of my data and programs on there. My second partition is my Vista Ultimate 32 bit version on which i use some programs from my windows xp partition that i wouldnt like to lose. Is there any way i can change from my 32 bit version of windows vista to a 64 bit version without losing all of my data... including the data on my windows xp partition if possible.
