Jun 12, 2008I'm a newbie in this forum and am desperately seeking help for a problem I'm having with my Pictures folder. Please excuse the lack of technical jargon! I know it's sounds really stupid and I'm sure it's a User Based Problem but I seem to have lost my original Pictures folder.I've been going into the Pictures folder that had my pictures in it under my Personal folder, but am now trying to delete another Pictures folder that has cropped up. Everytime I delete the new one (that has heaps of dropdown folders off it) the original one stops working. Now I've tried going into PropertiesLocation of the original folder and restoring the default location (because it's currently showing the location as C:UsersKaiPicturesPicturesPictures). When I try to restore it to the default that comes up when I hit that button (C:UsersKaiPictures) it comes up with the Move Folder warning, I hit Yes, then get a error that says "Can not redirect descendant into parent, the specified path is invalid".

Apr 29, 2009so my Norton Internet Security expired on my Asus laptop and I uninstalled it and Norton LiveUpdate. My internet worked fine. Then I installed AVG 8.5 antivirus and as soon as I rebooted the machine my internet stopped working. It says "the connection keeps resetting" when I try and get on the internet, and I cannot update the AVG now. I did turn on the Windows Firewall right after restarting, but after turning it back off, I'm still without internet. I'm using a NetGear wireless router connected to a broadband modem.

Sep 21, 2009I have an old icon on my desktop that I think I have done everything possible to remove but I can't seem to get it to go away. It is a "Network Magic" icon left over from some stuff that got installed with an earlier wireless modem. Everything associated with the modem has been removed from the computer. There is nothing associated with this icon ...it is just there on the desktop and annoying.

Nov 4, 2009I've been using Linux for a while exclusively lately due to some heavy issues I had with Vista a few months ago. While I was running Linux I decided to make my laptop OS Neutral. I Removed the Windows sticker, sanded down the windows key, and removed the OEM Windows Sticker on the bottom. My questions are:
1. Is it legal to remove this sticker?
2. Without the code that is on the sticker, will I still be able to use the Upgrade Disc to Windows 7 since my Vista will still pass WGA or do I need the codes that were on the sticker? If it was illegal then this whole situation is hypothetical)
64 Not Seeing USB Devices
Apr 18, 2009I'm not sure if this has been discussed before, but I thought I'd post it anyway. I recently upgraded to Vista Home Premium 64. It's not an upgrade disk but a full version on a DVD with SP1 (so I upgraded in the sense that I'm not using XP anymore). There are a couple of annoying things that keep happening.
First, Vista isn't recognizing USB devices, specifically my Ipod, my thumb drive, and my external HDD. They don't even come up in Windows or Disk Management. It's like they're connected (my external HDD has the power led on, but no activity) but invisible. I can't figure out any way to force Windows to see them. Is there any way to do that? Is there a problem with my USB drivers?
The only surefire way to get my Ipod recognized is to attach it first, without opening any other programs, after a start-up or a re-start. If I start my computer and work on it for a while and decide to attach a USB device, Windows doesn't see it at all. Obviously, re-starting each time I want to plug in a plug-n-play device is unacceptable.
Can Use USB Devices In VM?
Mar 23, 2008I have read in previous posts that the USB parts are not available in a VM. I am wanting to run XP in a VM on a Vista computer, but I have a USB keyboard and mouse. If I understand the previous posts, I will not be able to access these devices. Is this true? If so, is there a way to work around this (besides having two KB's and mice)? What I want to accomplish is to be able to utilize XP and Vista on the same machine. From what I have read in previous posts, it seems that a VM is a better solution than a dual boot. I am just looking for a way to run older apps on my Vista machine (Office Pro XP, Office Pro '97, and some old games from the as far back as the W98 days [and yes all software is legit]). So far I have been able to run all the W2K apps that I want, but I am just starting to move from W2K to Vista (Basic and Home Premium [two different computers]), and I foresee some problems in my future. BTW, I am able to run the old W98 apps/games on W2K by using the Compatibility tool.

May 27, 2008I just picked up a Trojan somewhere. Window's Defender removed it. Now I'm wondering what I did wrong. A week or so ago, I got a pop-up claiming that I had no virus protection and saying that "they" were going to do a scan. I DO have virus protection (McAfee), so I knew this wasn't legit. I had a hard time shutting it down, but I did. I did three scans in Safe mode (McAfee, Defender and Super AntiSpyware Free) and found nothing. I am wondering if this Trojan came from that and just wasn't detected until now. If not, could it have come from an Email attachment? My friends are always sending me forwarded things which I enjoy. I do have email scanning enabled, and only open ones that say "No unsafe attachments detected". Is it okay to open these forwarded items, or should I not? I have Window's Vista Home Premium.

Oct 23, 2008I've got a pretty insignificant, but weird bug: the highly hyped, hardly useful 3d flip feature of Vista has just magically disapeared from my comp. Only thing I know I've done was installing the latest x64 security update (KB958644) just before this. The icon is still there, but it just brings up the old school blue box version, and winKey-tab no longer does anything. Anybody heard of an update removing this feature, or know where the mysterious 'flip' files are actually located?

Mar 23, 2008I have a Sony VAIO that came with Vista Premium installed. I have installed a few programs on it and have had varrying problems. My most recent problem is having a "demo" version of a software which I then purchased and attempted to apply the license to it. It says it has to reboot to make changes, but when it restarts it is still in the demo mode. No changes made. By itself it would seem that it is a problem with the software. But, I have another program (Ikea Kitchen Builder 08) that when installed accesses removed and deleted files from a previous install version of it as well (Ikea kitchen builder 07). Both of these programs install and work perfectly on Windows XP. But for some stupid reason Vista doesn't allow these programs to successfuly install themselves.

Apr 23, 2009I have a HP laptop that is a C2D 1.86Ghz which is almost 2 years old, has 3gigs ram and the hard drive on it still had around 50gigs free. I normally set the virtual memory manually but because the machine is slowing down badly decided to put it all back to auto for a test. It appears to have helped a little so it remains on Windows automatically deciding what is best for now though the option to use it more for progs rather than background processes is chosen. I tried the other way and it seemed to slow down some programs so back to programs it is. Anyway, over time on its Vista SP1 (64 bit ultimate, BTW) it has slowed dramatically. I have:
1) Defragged, cleaned out garbage of all sorts using ccleaner and also removed old restore points and so on using Disk Cleanup.
2) Gone through registry using JV16 Power Tools 2009 and cleaned out any mistakes that were possible to remove.
3) Checked out what is starting up and uninstalled any program that I no longer used and adjusted ones I still use to only load what they need when I actually click on them to start.
4) Did an image backup of "C" drive and then deleted all partitions and formatted the drive as one partition and blank then used another machine to attach the drive to and check for any faults including bad sectors then put the image back.
5) Downloaded HWMonitor to check heat and it SOMETIMES gets up to 56C when I really am pushing it but for the most part hovers around 40C. So overheating isn't it.
I cannot get to the thermal exchanger so cannot be entirely sure but with the best inspection I could do, I could see there was nothing blocking the vents or exchange unit. I also stand the laptop on a cake stand (which is the metal wire stand thing you put cakes on to cool down) so that air flow under and around it is maximised. All those things did nix to help. So I decided to use SFC /SCANNOW and it
went through the entire process and reported that two files appeared to be a problem but couldn't be fixed because they were locked. OK, so I tried to use SFC /SCANBOOT as I used to on XP but that option doesn't exist for SFC under Vista so I cant reboot and have a windows OS file scan be performed when no file is locked. Not daunted I thought about "repair install" which *CAN* be done on my desktop Vista Business if needed with the DVD there but the laptop came with Vista Ultimate 64 bit already installed and with a restore partition on it, no disk, as usual and I cannot actually DO a repair install because of that.....
USB Device Being Removed Playing Various Games
Mar 9, 2010I have been experiencing this problem for some time and am now getting frustrated, Whilst playing several games, Halo 2, Burnout paradise and a few others my pc lags dredfully, to the extent that the games are unplayable, The PC gives a sound indication as if theres a USB device being removed then added continually which is what appears to be causeing the lag but i have not found any way to stop this can anyone help.am running vista home premium 64bit.

Then when I go to delete those from the search window, I get an error "Item could not be found". The files are actually gone, but shows up in the search window and cannot be removed. Apr 16, 2008I am having a problem with Vista. Last time I shut my computer down, my mouse worked fine. Now it is gone. I normally use a regular Dell USB mouse. I tried a PS2 mouse that that isn't recognized at all. So, I plugged the USB mouse back in. The computer recognized that I plugged something but claimed it couldn't find a driver for it. I read that Windows Update KB938371 but I am unable to uninstall it and a system restore doesn't fix the problem.
As an additional note to this problem: for the past couple of days ANY USB or firewire drive that I plug in (even ones that I have used before) will not work. As with the mouse, the computer recognizes that I plugged something in but it can't find a driver for it. Anybody have a solution for this other than reinstalling Vista? Having no mouse and no connection to a external hard drive is quite an inconvenience. Even if I DID want to back my stuff up and reformat my computer, I don't dare do that because I have nothing to back it up on besides a bunch of DVD's.
Recognizing USB Devices
Feb 23, 2010I've been experiencing this problem for approximately six months on and off. Intermitently, when I go to attach a USB device (memory stick or ipod) I get the pop up "USB Device Not Recognized." At this point, nothing I attach will be recognized
In the Device Manager whatever I attach is listed as an Unknown Device. I check the Properties and get the advice "No drivers are installed for this devices" I've tried right clicking and Updating the Driver Software but get the response: "Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date". I check the Properties again and still get the advice "No drivers are installed for this devices".........................

Apr 3, 2010A friend of mine gave me a his HP notebook which recently developed a serious problem. It's an HP Pavilion DV6305 that uses an Nvida chipset and AMD cpu and runs Vista Home Basic. When he first bought it, I set it up for him with Eset's Nod32 anti-virus. The problem appears to be that at least 10 devices appear to be unable to load the associated device driver and in each case (looking in device manager) the error message appears to be: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (code 39)Googling on this error only turned up dozens of references to people having this problem with their CD / DVD drive but nothing like what is going on here.
Of course my first suspicion was a virus, since this seems to be the case with so many people having problems these days. I scanned with the installed Nod32 V4.0.x and it didn't find anything. Of course not that that completely rules out a virus. Next I tried running a disk test on the boot drive with both "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" and the system log seems to indicate that the hard drive is clean with no problems.
The devices that are disabled include both the Ethernet and wireless controllers, the USB controllers, the HP quick Launch Buttons, the audio controller, etc. The only way to get files onto the machine is by burning them onto CD, since the CD / DVD drive is one of the few devices that appears to be working. I've tried downloading drivers for the Nvidia chipset and networking controllers, putting them on a cd and trying to reinstall them but while the installation appears to complete without errors on reboot the device still doesn't work properly. Does anyone have any ideas what I could do to fix this problem? If this is a virus, any ideas on how to remove it since the installed scanner can't detect it?

Mar 28, 2009Ive got a problem where the mic is only picked up once it is unplugged and plugged back in again. Ive updated the drivers and put a splitter in the mic jack to try and stop the socket from wearing down. The problem is I have to remove the splitter and plug that back in for it to pick it up now. Its an Asus P5N-E SLI 650i Socket 775 PCI-E Onboard Audio ATX Motherboard running onboard sound with realtek drivers.
