Not sure if this is a Vista problem or some type of malware or IM downloaded icon. The icon appeared after one of my kids was on PC. Do not know if she was in an IM program or not. The "volume control" icon can not be removed. Can't right or left click to get info or even move or delete it. Can't find any associated program that was installed in the last 2 days. Anyone ever have or seen this problem?
View 4 RepliesI lost the volume control icon in the notification area. When I go to properties for the notification area the volume check box is grayed out. I've also looked in the Creative software but there is no option that I can find for the volume control icon. Any ideas on how to get it back?
View 6 Replies View RelatedNo sound: it's just not working, and whenever I try to change the volume from the taskbar, a window pops up saying "Volume Control Applet is not responding". Also when I right-click on the sound icon and go to 'playback devices' and then go to the recording tab, it freezes (the window) and says "Windows Shell Common dll is not responding. (I don't know if this is related but my iTunes isn't working, I double-click to listen but the little time bar at the top doesn't move at all, but the window does not freeze)

It is a "Network Magic" icon left over from some stuff that got installed with an earlier wireless modem. Everything associated with the modem has been removed from the computer. There is nothing associated with this icon ...it is just there on the desktop and annoying.

View 5 Replies View RelatedEver since I tried to install Service Pack 1 (which seemed to require driver updates before it could be installed), the sound on my laptop has refused to work. The volume control doesn't work and insists that there is no audio output device, whereas the Device Manager says that the Conexant HD Audio device is there, but that the drivers are not installed... but when I try to reinstall the drivers, it tells me that the installation has 'failed', but doesn't tell me why.

View 4 Replies View Relatedim using a toshiba satellite M300 running vista home premium and i have just had the LCD cable replaced in the repair shop.. i dont think this is the problem but before i sent it in, i had fully operational icons in the taskbar including time, messenger, power and volume control. i got the computer back and now the power and volume icons have disappeared. the time and messenger are still there i have gone into properties > notification tab and the option for CLOCK is checked but Volume, Network and Power are all greyed out. i can control other program icons but those three just dont seem to be available.

View 7 Replies View RelatedBoth Windows Vista and Windows XP have a well-hidden ability to display thumbnail images with no labels. This feature is probably most useful in a folder containing just pictures. When you invoke it by accident, it can definitely make life difficult. To display the contents of a folder as thumbnails with no filenames, simply hold down a Shift key while switching the folder from Details view to Thumbnails view in XP or to one of the several Icons views in Vista. In my experience, this action is a bit less responsive in Vista—you may have to try several times. But clearly it wouldn't be hard to invoke this feature accidentally. So how do you get back the filenames? First, make sure the problem folder is currently set to display in one of the filename-free thumbnail views. Now click on some other folder, hold down a Shift key, and click back on the folder whose filenames you want to recover. Here again I found that in Vista I sometimes had to try several times. Now that you know how to turn this feature on and off at will, perhaps you'll find it's actually useful.

Now I find that only one, my Google Mail Account, does this. Is there any way that I can restore the refresh 'blink' to all Desktop Icons?

So I noticed that the printer icon for my printer became all white, IE a corrupted icon. So I went online and found information on how to refresh your icon folder. That didn't do anything. So I thought I'd uninstall and reinstall.
I have tried to reinstall my HP software from disc, and I get a 'new PSSWCORE.msi' file. I see the file on the install disc, yet it won't install. 'Network resource is unavailable.'
Now I cannot uninstall it. On my Add/Remove I see:
HP Customer Participation Program 9.0
HP All In One Software 9.0
HP Imaging device Functions 9.0
HP On-Screen Cap/Num/Scroll Lock Indicator
HP Photosmart Essential
HP Update
How can I get these off my PC, and reinstall cleanly so I can use my rinter/scanner again?
I installed new software and pinned the executable to the start menu. But, Vista displays a generic icon in the start menu for this program. All other programs pinned to the start menu display the correct icon. Any way to get Vista to dispaly the proper icon for this program??

I know it's sounds really stupid and I'm sure it's a User Based Problem but I seem to have lost my original Pictures folder.I've been going into the Pictures folder that had my pictures in it under my Personal folder, but am now trying to delete another Pictures folder that has cropped up. Everytime I delete the new one (that has heaps of dropdown folders off it) the original one stops working. Now I've tried going into PropertiesLocation of the original folder and restoring the default location (because it's currently showing the location as C:UsersKaiPicturesPicturesPictures). When I try to restore it to the default that comes up when I hit that button (C:UsersKaiPictures) it comes up with the Move Folder warning, I hit Yes, then get a error that says "Can not redirect descendant into parent, the specified path is invalid".

Then I installed AVG 8.5 antivirus and as soon as I rebooted the machine my internet stopped working. It says "the connection keeps resetting" when I try and get on the internet, and I cannot update the AVG now. I did turn on the Windows Firewall right after restarting, but after turning it back off, I'm still without internet. I'm using a NetGear wireless router connected to a broadband modem.

While I was running Linux I decided to make my laptop OS Neutral. I Removed the Windows sticker, sanded down the windows key, and removed the OEM Windows Sticker on the bottom. My questions are:
1. Is it legal to remove this sticker?
2. Without the code that is on the sticker, will I still be able to use the Upgrade Disc to Windows 7 since my Vista will still pass WGA or do I need the codes that were on the sticker? If it was illegal then this whole situation is hypothetical)
I have noticed that the Notepad document icons on my computer are like a printer icon, they open up in notepad but have a pronter icon.:confused: I have searched all over the internet but cant find out how to sort it out.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI just picked up a Trojan somewhere. Window's Defender removed it. Now I'm wondering what I did wrong. A week or so ago, I got a pop-up claiming that I had no virus protection and saying that "they" were going to do a scan. I DO have virus protection (McAfee), so I knew this wasn't legit. I had a hard time shutting it down, but I did. I did three scans in Safe mode (McAfee, Defender and Super AntiSpyware Free) and found nothing. I am wondering if this Trojan came from that and just wasn't detected until now. If not, could it have come from an Email attachment? My friends are always sending me forwarded things which I enjoy. I do have email scanning enabled, and only open ones that say "No unsafe attachments detected". Is it okay to open these forwarded items, or should I not? I have Window's Vista Home Premium.

Only thing I know I've done was installing the latest x64 security update (KB958644) just before this. The icon is still there, but it just brings up the old school blue box version, and winKey-tab no longer does anything. Anybody heard of an update removing this feature, or know where the mysterious 'flip' files are actually located?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Sony VAIO that came with Vista Premium installed. I have installed a few programs on it and have had varrying problems. My most recent problem is having a "demo" version of a software which I then purchased and attempted to apply the license to it. It says it has to reboot to make changes, but when it restarts it is still in the demo mode. No changes made. By itself it would seem that it is a problem with the software. But, I have another program (Ikea Kitchen Builder 08) that when installed accesses removed and deleted files from a previous install version of it as well (Ikea kitchen builder 07). Both of these programs install and work perfectly on Windows XP. But for some stupid reason Vista doesn't allow these programs to successfuly install themselves.
