"no Permission" To Acess Files On Network
Mar 23, 2008
My Vista laptop is networked with XP desktop. No matter what I try, I can't access Vista laptop files from the XP PC, get the dreaded "no permission....." error. However I can access XP PC files from the Vista Laptop. Both computers see each others Folders, however when I click on one of the Vista documents from the XP, then "permission denied".

I am the only user on my computer and am an administrator obviously. I am trying to delete some *.gdp files that a software did not remove when uninstalled. It says I need permission. FROM WHO? How do I rid myself of these files and is it possible for VISTA to be set so it recognizes that I am the only one on the planet actually with the permission to do anything on this stupid OS?

They are connected through a wireless network set to private, with file sharing and network discovery and no passwords required. Both users are set to administrator with no password required. What I want is permission to transfer files or folders between the C drives of both machines.
I get as far as seeing these drives when I click on the computer's network location but then cannot gain access to the drive itself. I feel as if I'm close. I've trying playing with the permissions on both C drives and it looks like I've set everything I can.

All of a sudden I'm getting an error message saying I don't have permission to save files in the Download folder in Vista Ultimate SP1, using IE 7, and to contact the administrator for permission. I'm the only one using the puter and it's never done this before today. What went wrong and how do I fix it?

My old Windows XP PC died months ago (motherboard problems) and so I took out the hard drive (which still functions fine) and put it in my new PC, but I can't seem to copy any of my files in the My Documents folder from the old drive to my newer larger drive. I've had this drive in here for the last several months and have had no problems writing other files to this 'older' drive (250 gig Maxtor 16mb cache, 7,200RPM drive (btw it's only a year old), but when I try to copy files to another drive I get the following error message: "You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy to this file." This only happens with files that are in the My Documents folder. My current login has administrator rights, so I'm thinking some how this has something to do with this drive being from a different computer's installation of XP.

since upgrading tp Vista, Both windows Mail and Live mail do not always donnload messages from my pop 3 accounts. I have to open my accounts online and when I have opened the accounts both mail and live mail will then down load messages, This does not happen all of the time, so I know the account settings are correct. It is just annoying that I have to check online every day rather than just checking mail or live mail. This never happened with XP running Outlook Express. is this a problem with Vista, or my mail servers

For my first post I think this one will have you thinking. I have a Laptop running Vista & a PC running XP Media Centre Edition on a small network. The problem is : Both Laptop & pc can see each other in the network. From the pc I can access the shared files on the laptop, no problem. I cannot access any files on the pc when I select the pc in my network I get an error which says " Cannot access \computername. Check the spelling of the name, otherwise there may be a problem with your network. I have attempted pinging the pc from my laptop, but it keeps timing out I can ping my laptop from my pc. I opened a browser on my laptop and entered \ipaddress of the pc . I got an error. pc cannot be found. I did the same \ipaddress of the wireless router. I got an error. cannot be found. I did the same \ipaddress of the laptop. I was able to see all the files on my laptop. If you look at the image, this is my network. when I attempt to access the pc named DB that is when the problem arises.

A very frustrating feature of Vista is the inability to copy certain files such as executable files over a network. Any attempt to copy an exe file from the network to an individual computer produces a message that this needs permission but then fails to complete the copy. Is there any way to configure Vista to allow me to copy a exe file form the network to another computer on the network.

Have Vista Ultimate on 1 machine and XP Pro on the other. Was able to share files from XP to Vista but not, after all the trying, the other way. About a month ago I becan me unable to share either way. Can see each computer from either one. Have been reading various comments from poeple like me who are in the same boat. Have not had a clear indication on what to do. It seems to me that if Microsoft wants to push Vista then they have to catter to us relatively DUMB ones who are going to buy Vista.
Most poeple want to share their misic etc on their network and with the present layout that is not going to happen. It is alright if you are an IT Tech or System Administrator who has trained for this but the average person is not. Maybe all you Brains could come up with a Wizard to help us Dumb poeple out. Have had Vista from the beginning and have never had control of sharing .

Using Vista Ultimate 64bit We have created a bat file that performs multiple XCOPY commands to copy various files all over the network from key servers and workstations to the local machine into a PGP encrypted drive, drive letter V. So a typcical command might be something like: XCOPY \Server_Nameshare namespecial folder*.* V:Special Folder or XCOPY \Server_Namec$another folder*.* V:Another Folder
The local machine has a user logged in as a Domain Admin The network connection is 1gbit We have tried this bat file many different ways.
1) Manual Backup - by that I mean double clicking the bat file to run, sometimes is done and backs up everything in 8 minutes.
2) Scheduled Backup - task scheduler as domain admin DOMAINAdmin Name running with as high a priv as possible - everything backs up in 21 minutes Same scenarios, manual backup runs in 20 minutes, sometimes the scheduled is 40 minutes The local machine is running AV software - CA etrust - which also runs on an XP machine that does not display this speed behavior. The local machine is running Diskeeper 2009. I do not know if this matters, since the benchmarks are so different in each test. I know VIsta now does indexing of files for searching, could this be creating an issue? We have tried different switch ports, different network cables, verified the gbit.

Network fully operational - Public Folder on Vista can be shared on XP - no problem BUT when I attempt to share another folder on Vista it requests username. Options include username on Vista, Guest, Everyone or Add name. It appears that Vista cannot see usernames on XP. Do I have to add these usernames to the Vista computer? I think the 'everyone' option applies only to 'Domains' which are not recognised on XP.

On the desktop side: WinXP Home, all updates etc in place On the laptop side: WinVista Home Premium, all updates etc in place. I have a wireless ADSL router connected by cable to the desktop machine. The laptop connects to the router via a wireless connection. The laptop has full access to everything on the desktop machine. The desktop machine has limited access only to certain folders on the laptop because that's the way Vista is. I have things set up so that from the laptop (Vista) machine I can open, run, copy, move, and delete files on the desktop (XP) machine.
The recycle bins on both machines work properly. If I delete files on the XP side they go to the XP recycle bin and if I delete files on the Vista side they go to the Vista recycle bin. I noticed yesterday however that when I delete XP-side files from the Vista side, they aren't sent to the recycle bins on either machine. This seems very strange. Is it by design? Is there a setting I need to set to have such files sent to a recycle bin? Where do files go when you delete them over a (wireless) network?

I have a home office network with one new Dell laptop with Windows Vista Home Basic which I bought a couple of weeks ago, one desktop with Windows XP Pro and one older laptop with Windows XP Pro. The laptops are connected wirelessly, the desktop is using a wired Ethernet connection.
Obviously, there have been never a problem with XP machines. Initially, the Vista machine was also able to connect to everybody else. I didn't even bother to look at the settings because everything worked. Then I went to a business trip, and connected to other networks, including wireless public ones in the airports. When I came back, I was unable to share files or even see other computers on the LAN. The internet connection is working fine though. Oh yes, and I also installed a couple of updates, probably some of those constituting Service Pack 1 as well.
When I checked the network, to my surprise, it turned out that it became "Public" (could this be "guilt by association" - the airport wireless networks are public, so my home network is public, too?). I changed it to "Private". Didn't help. Checked shares, made sure that the users have the same passwords. Ditto. I deleted the history of the airport networks. Still the same.........

my computer doesnt have a wireless network card. It accesses the internet as it is connected to the wireless router with a yellow Ethernet cable. My laptop accesses the internet wirelesses. since my computer is connected to the wireless router, i thought it would be possible to set up a wireless home network to allow files sharing as well as accessing peripherals
on the laptop i went to Start>network>network & sharing center> set up a connection or network>set up a wireless router or access point, click next>click next> message says "Windows detected network hardware but cannot configure it automatically" i clicked the first option> logged on>but all settings were ok nothing wrong
i started everything again then chose the second option> i inserted the USB into the computer but i got a message saying i dont have the wireless network card/software on the computer . why does this matter since its connected to the wireless router
1)Is it possible to set up a wireless home network without buying anything
2)Can i have a really simple set by step guide on how to set this up in Windows Vista Home Premium

I am using a Dell XPS 420. I have been able to transfer files via a private network with no problems until now. I made a share folder with the correct permission. I can transfer any file under 5MB with no errors. If I send a file at 6MB it will process the folder and after 5 min I get this error message:
Network Error... There is a problem accessing C:userpublicetwork testfile name28624.zip.
It says make sure you are connected to the network and try again. Is there a timing issue causing the lost connection? I worked with Dell and since it worked in Jan 08 to reinstall the backup for the Dell Factory settings. I thought I would check with the Windows Vista Community before I do the reinstall. I also have another computer with Windows Vista Ultimate and I can transfer the files with no problem via Hamachi network.

I have a network share setup b/w a Vista Ultimate x32 and XP machines. Using the XP machine, I open the Vista hosted share but found some files "missing", ie. even though they physically exist in the Vista machine, I simply cannot see them from XP. Turns out that these files are missing the EVERYONE in the File Permissions (right click file, properties, security). These are files downloaded using Firefox, and whether they are JPG, AVI, TXT, DOC, XLS they are all missing the EVERYONE permission. If I download the same files using Internet Explorer, the files get created with the EVERYONE permission.
My current workarounds ... which none are desirable are this:Use Internet Explorer, Add EVERYONE permission for each file manually (you have to do this one by one, can't select multiple files and perform bulk operation),Use CMD line utilities like takeown and icacls Note this is a secure home network, and while file sharing using EVEYRONE isn't the safest way to do this, I can finetune this later. The key problem at hand is what I've described above. I'd be happy just to be able to get FireFox create files with the full permissions, same way IE does.

I have 2 laptops running Vista Home Premium and a Desktop running XP Home -- all are using the same WORKGROUP workgroup. Laptop 1 can see the desktop and access files without issues. Laptop 1 can see laptop 2 in the "Network and Sharing Center", but cannot access any files on it. Laptop 2 cannot see the desktop at all, nor can I type the "\desktop" path to get to it. Laptop 2 can see Laptop 1 and access the files without issues.
Laptop 1 and Laptop 2 have all the same settings that I could think of. Network and File Sharing settings, workgroup definition, etc. In fact they are basically the same laptops. I have been trying to get this to work for days now. I have rebooted all machines at some point a few times.

Last night I was trying to get rid of some of the virtual memory on my laptop.
It has 320 Gb and 260 Gb are occupied so since I only have 80 Gb on the HD, I was trying to fix the problem.Well instead to fix the problem I made a mess somehow I changed the users and Admin' options, and I changed all the permissions to the accounts two accounts!! I was trying to get control of the system like a TrustedInstaller.instead.the laptop works but I have no access to anything!
Right now I basically have no permission only reading NO ACCESS to the hard disk ...no access to most of the systems' folders .
In prompt I can not really do anything since it denies every my request.

I am SO bored, because everything in Vista must Allow or Deny. And even though i ALLOW, ME, the ADMINISTRATOR, THE OWNER from the Computer has the acess Denied. Thats dumb, i think. i was wondering, how can i Take Ownership from my WHOLE computer and have the Full Permission from just everything. In a way to grant Acess to whole Notebook. How do i do it? I know its possible cause in a Modified Windows Version it was like that.

Setup: My old XP machine crashed and burned (possible lightning strike). However, the Hard Drive survived. I used my IDE to USB 2.0 adapter and hooked up the HDD to my new Vista machine. Problem: While I can access, view, and copy all other files, I cannot access the My Documents folder because I don't have permissions. Well, let me clarify that - I can see the files, but I get the permissions error when I attempt to open or copy the files, individually, in groups, or by parent folder.Duh. Is there anyway I can access the Owner files (My Documents and all sub-folders) from my Vista machine?
