Have Vista and Xp Pro computers on network (Workgroup). Am able to see and access files from Vista unit. Can see XP Pro unit but am not able to (Access it) Access Denied. Have setup identical usernames and passwords on both, but am getting nowhere.

I posted this in general, but it does not appear there so I am posting it here too. I have a desktop PC with VISTA and a laptop with VISTA. The DT is connected to a router via a cable. The laptop is connected to the router via wireless. I have set all permissions that I can find and share wherever I can find. I can't access files on either PC from either PC. I get the message "Windows can not access \Lu-PCC" or what ever folder I try to access. I can get into the folder alled "public", but my files are not in that folder on either PC. View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to access a network folder share with my notebook. The share contains EFS encrpyted files and is located on a PC that runs Vista Ultimate. My notebook runs Vista Entreprise. I can see the files and its sizes, but I cannot copy them to my notebook or open them directly from the share without getting an "access denied" error. I installed the PC's encryption certificate on my notebook (as documented in Vista's help) but keep getting the "access denied" error. I have no issues with copying or opening files on the network share that are not encrypted. The error message only appears when trying to copy/open encrypted files.

The HP Computer can see all Files and Folders on the DELL. Example Documents, Pictures, Music etc. I can open all these folders, add, delete etc. No Problems....
I have a HTPC running vista ultimate 32bit, 250gb OS drive and 1tb mirror storage drive (need some fault tolerance since my pics and music will be stored here.) I would like to have this machine also act as a mini server and be able to share out the folders housing my music and my pictures. ( makes it easier for me to dump off my recently taken pics from vacations that i may have dumped onto my laptop, and now that i am back home would like to dump back to the vista machine.) This machine is also part of a domain (a whole other nightmare to get vista to join my domain) My server is running windows 2003 standard.
I set folder permissions and and i just can't seem to get passed the access denied. when trying to open up one of the vista shared folders. from the domain controller i mapped the folders that i need and i can open them but can not make any changes or create new directories. what am i doing wrong? I know i am no expert when it comes to networking but xp has never given me this much of a headache. *the reason it is on a domain and not a workgroup - is to broaden my skill and familiarity with working with servers, Domain controllers and Active Directory*
I have spent 2 weeks on this now. I recently installed Vista Ultimate on my main pc (PC1), and using the default sharing wizard, shared a series of folders to the 'Everyone' group, as I allow my private home network to access my shares anonymously. Everything was working fine for the first few days, PC2 and PC3 where able to successfully access the shares, until one day it just stopped working and when PC2/PC3 attempted to access the shared folders via ‘Start > Network’ or UNC Path \VISTA , it would say “Access is Denied”. Having said that, to make it more complex, the shares are accessible if you type the folder share name, ie \VISTAMovies.......

I have shared a couple of folders on the host pc but when i try to access it from two other pc in our office i get an error of access denied. from the host pc i can access the files shared on the other two pc's. From pc 1 i can access the files on pc 2 and the same goes for pc 2 accessing pc 1 fils with no problem. ITs just when i try and access the host pc from pc 1 or pc 2 i can and i get the error saying access is denied. I have went onto the host pc and took off the firewall and also deleted the McAffee secuirty software and also when in and made sure the settings are on for file shairing but still nothing.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have 2 laptops running Vista Home Premium and a Desktop running XP Home -- all are using the same WORKGROUP workgroup. Laptop 1 can see the desktop and access files without issues. Laptop 1 can see laptop 2 in the "Network and Sharing Center", but cannot access any files on it. Laptop 2 cannot see the desktop at all, nor can I type the "\desktop" path to get to it. Laptop 2 can see Laptop 1 and access the files without issues.
Laptop 1 and Laptop 2 have all the same settings that I could think of. Network and File Sharing settings, workgroup definition, etc. In fact they are basically the same laptops. I have been trying to get this to work for days now. I have rebooted all machines at some point a few times.
I think I might have a good one for you.. I am working on an Acer 5610z Notebook for a friend of mine. He was setting the parental controls and managed to control his account which had admin access. the user listing has the account listing as an admin but he only has standard user access. His was the "only" admin account.. While he was doing this he managed to deny access to the boot drive. The drive reads as "Access Denied". The machine boots up and a person can play games etc.. but network access is restricted.

I am the only user and have full admin rights on both (I checked) They are connected by a wired home network. I can see and browse the XP PC from the Vista PC, install programs from the XP PC onto the Vista PC - no problem BUT.... when I am using the Vista PC and try to copy a file across from the XP PC I can see the file appear in the Vista folder (using drag & drop) but then I get the dreaded "Destination Folder Access Denied....You need permission to perform this action" you can only click 'RETRY.'or 'CANCEL'....of course RETRY just repeats the error window and Cancel removes the file that you have dropped into the destination folder. As I am the owner with full rights over the folder, does anyone know what this message means and how to set whatever 'permission' is required?

I haven't changed any of the settings on my laptop and it just started doing this. It will connect to my wireless network, but it says the Access is Local Only. There is a strong signal and everything and my roommate that has the exact same computer has no problem connecting and getting online.
Whenever I access the Network and Sharing Center and click on the red X to find out what the problem is, a window pops up and says "There might be a problem with one or more network adapters on this computer. It gives me 3 options for repair: Restart the DHCP client service. Plug a cable into the network adapter "Local Area Connection". Automatically get new IP settings for the network adapter "Wireless Network Connection" I have tried all three of these and none of them work.
When I was running XP, I put some personal files in a special encrypted folder, but I forgot to decrypt it when I backed it up to install Vista. Now, everytime I try to open one of the still encrypted files, I get the message saying "Access Denied".

Both are connected to a linksys wired router, both are online. I went to set up files sharing and thought I did. When I check my view network in vista I can see the xp machine and and vista machine. I have no acces to the xp machine. Is this because the xp machine is fat32 file system and vista is nfts. I was just checking some other post on another forum and found that fat32 can read ntfs and vice versa.

About a month ago I becan me unable to share either way. Can see each computer from either one. Have been reading various comments from poeple like me who are in the same boat. Have not had a clear indication on what to do. It seems to me that if Microsoft wants to push Vista then they have to catter to us relatively DUMB ones who are going to buy Vista.
Most poeple want to share their misic etc on their network and with the present layout that is not going to happen. It is alright if you are an IT Tech or System Administrator who has trained for this but the average person is not. Maybe all you Brains could come up with a Wizard to help us Dumb poeple out. my computer doesnt have a wireless network card. It accesses the internet as it is connected to the wireless router with a yellow Ethernet cable. My laptop accesses the internet wirelesses. since my computer is connected to the wireless router, i thought it would be possible to set up a wireless home network to allow files sharing as well as accessing peripherals
on the laptop i went to Start>network>network & sharing center> set up a connection or network>set up a wireless router or access point, click next>click next> message says "Windows detected network hardware but cannot configure it automatically" i clicked the first option> logged on>but all settings were ok nothing wrong

I?m trying to install a network printer on a Vista machine. Vista is able to locate the printer on the network but when I select it for installation, for some time, Vista tries to connect and then pops up this message: "Failed Connecting to Printer - Access Denied" And then another window pops up with this message: "Spooler Subsystem Application stopped woring and has been closed." In fact the spooler service always stops, so I have to restart it on the services windows, within Administrative Tools of the Control Panel. The machine is new and has been installed yesterday. Everything else works fine. The printer I am trying to install is on a Windows XP Professional machine within the same network (naturally).
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a network with four XP computers on and have recently added a Vista Laptop successfully. All documents are shared fine and internet access is fine. Heres the tricky part, 2 of the XP computers have printers attached to them, When connecting the Vista laptop to a printer on one of them, it works fine, When connecting the Vista laptop to any printer on the other one of them, it comes up with a message saying 'WINDOWS CANNOT CONNECT TO THE PRINTER. ACCESS IS DENIED'. I have tried many different ways and checked sharing permissions etc but cannot find a solution. Just as an added note - to connect to the printer from one XP machine to the 'problem xp machine' is no problem. Only from vista to the one machine. (The problem machine is a HP pavillion.)
View 5 Replies View RelatedI click on view full map in Network and Sharing center on Vista, and I can see all the XP computers (because I installed the LLTD fix) sometimes I can click on the computers, sometimes I can't. I don't know why that is. Next, clicking on "View computers and devices" only shows my Laptop and router. Sometimes the other computers show up too, usually after a few tries or refreshes. When the XP computers do show up, and I double click to try to view the shared folders, I get the following error:
"Windows cannot access \Computer Name. Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose. Error code: 0x80070005 Access is denied."
Clicking on diagnose says this: "Windows did not find any problems with this computer's network connection." My firewalls are set to allow computers on the network. I've even turned them off and just let Windows Firewall do it's thing. I really don't understand the spelling error. I think if that can be fixed,
the network would work just fine.
Well I have spent 2 days going through all the posts trying to figure out why my XP computer and my VISTA won't share files. I've set all the TCP/IP stuff, ive disabled all firewalls that I know of and McAfee. I've pinged both ways. Ive set shared folders. I have to a place where my Vista now sees my XP. But when I click on it, "Access Denied".
I am connected through a wireless router with both ethernet cables plugged in. I am getting low on hope. I even tried mostly everything with browstat and everything Chuck's Network said to do about certain things....but each computer still doesnt show up on the browstat.

The problem is : Both Laptop & pc can see each other in the network. From the pc I can access the shared files on the laptop, no problem. I cannot access any files on the pc when I select the pc in my network I get an error which says " Cannot access \computername. Check the spelling of the name, otherwise there may be a problem with your network. I have attempted pinging the pc from my laptop, but it keeps timing out I can ping my laptop from my pc. I opened a browser on my laptop and entered \ipaddress of the pc . I got an error. pc cannot be found. I did the same \ipaddress of the wireless router. I got an error. cannot be found. I did the same \ipaddress of the laptop. I was able to see all the files on my laptop. If you look at the image, this is my network. when I attempt to access the pc named DB that is when the problem arises.

I want to change the start menu and get rid of a bunch of garbage but I can't enter the folder to do so. When I use the start menu program, it only has a few basic folders. This happens frequently, even when trying to view pictures or video in the folder. What do I need to change to remove this very annoying problem?

I have file sharing/network discovery on, private network, password protection disabled, my shares set to everyone and everyone is on the same workgroup. My problem is that the x64 Vista computer will not see any of the XP (x86 or x64) computers and they can't see it from the Network Neighbourhood. However, if I type the IP address of the XP computers I
can access them. On the XP computers if I type the IP address I get an error that it isn't accessable and I might not have permission. However, if I type \192.168.0.100share or any of the other share names I access it just fine. pinging works too by IP but not by name. If I boot into the x86 install of have of Vista I can access XP computers from Vista and the Vista from XP by name and everything without typing any user names. The only differince between the two aside from x64 and x86 is that x86 isn't patched past SP1 as I don't use it often. Lastly after installing that XP patch I can see the x86 XP computers by name from the network map feature on Vista, still can't access them by name though...
I'm trying to network my new Optiplex 740 with Vista Business (32bit), and Norton 360, to my old Euro PC with W2K Pro. and SystemWorks, using basic Belkin /Realtek cards and yellow ethernet cable. My broadband connection is through my old machine and works perfectly, as does the network card installation.
My new machine also indicates that its card is correctly installed and functioning correctly. BUT the Network and Sharing Center window shows this computer as linked to an Unidentified network and no connection to either the other computer or broadband connection.........
