View 5 Repliesi decided to install Medieval 2 Total War yesterday after months of not playing it, it installed fine and everything but when i went to click on the shortcut on the desktop it came up with the following message: Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item So, i'm on the admin account and i've tried re installing but its the same message.
I tried to install CoD4 just now but when i put the disk in and clicked install nothing happened, just like when i try and launch medieval 2 from the disk (i only get the message when i use the shortcut). I also get the same message when i try and install the software for my webcam, i go to my computer and click the disk drive but the same message comes up! I can launch games i've already installed, just not games i actually want to play! Maybe something i've done is blocking it?
When I try to open some of my programs they won't open or run.A message box opens and says: "WINDOWS CANNOT ACCESS THE SPECIFIED DEVICE PATH OR FILE.YOU MAY NOT HAVE THE APPROPRIATE PERMISSIONS TO ACCESS THE ITEM."I get this too if I try a program from the toolbar, and sometimes when I open I.E.8 but it still opens.Vista x32. This box also appears when I download and prevents it from downloading.

I have a virus it seems to be a pretty bad one at that. I am unable to access my Google chrome browser but Luckily am able to use IE but If I try installing let's say AVG when I restart nothing works except MSN I can still chat to people. This all started when my Norton 360 ran out and I had to switch for a new antivirus.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThis is getting very desperate for me. My problem is i am unable to access websites using my IE7 web browser. Things i have tried so far, run malware and deleted the results, run CCCleaner and deleted the results, run Anti Virus - there does not seem to be a virus on the machine although it displayed a comment on the system toolbar that there was a w32.zaposhopping virus on machine.
I am able to ping my router and go beyond that by pinging an DNS server 4.2.2.2 with successfully results so i know that there is nothing wrong witheither. I have reset IE7 explorer, i have deleted all tmp files, cookies etc.
I am able to access Google BUT it seems no other sites - I am at my wits end as to what to do next. I am very experienced with computer and work in the industury but not come across anything like this before.
I have been using Sophos for a number of years. I recently have not been able to get it to auto update. When I dug into it a bit, I found I couldn't access the update server from a web browser. In fact, I can't even reach the main Sophos site. I can't believe they are down. I can reach many other web sites I've tried, including this one. Could I have something messed up in my settings somewhere that would prevent access to this one web site? I am using Sophos 7.6.16 Antivirus as well as Sophos firewall 1.5.4 R2
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have three computers networked together via a Linksys Wireless Router. One Dell running XP Pro, and two HP laptops (wireless) one running Vista Ultimate x64 and the other running Vista Home Premium x32. I have all issues resolved (that I've discovered so far anyway) except one. There is a shared external hard drive conneced via USB to the XP, which I have mapped to both Vistas. I can see it when I open 'My Computer' but when I click on it I get an error that says "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have appropriate permissions to view the item." The odd thing about it is that I can access the contents of the drive by right-clicking on it and choosing either 'explore' or 'open.' I can access drives mapped from the Vista(s) to the XP on the XP just fine, just not the other way around.

Now I need to:
1- know how configure him to open in the "Only Media Mode".
2- do something to block everything, but some games and 3 sites! gmail, yahoo and hattrick.com
To make it clear, i want to configure a user that may only use the media center, some games and access does 3 sites and nothing else!
I need to use C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFramework64v2.0.50727jsc.exe very hoften from cmd console.
I don't remember how you set up so that I don't need to write the whole path each time I wanna access this program
I have Vista Home Premium. With WinXP, the path to a file appeared in a text box at the top of Windows Explorer. So it was easy to copy and paste the path (for example, into a DOS console). Is there an option that allows us to display this path in Vista?

View 4 Replies View Relatedevery day my Vista SP1 gets disconnected from the corporate DFS share right after I stop working with my Vista SP1 Enterprise computer for an hour. We have two different type Vista SP1 computers in our network, and they both behave the same.
I just get an Event ID No 9, in Operational Log of Offline Files "Path disconnected. \company.comDFSshare", and that's it. Any clues. Power management, or something?
I can access the Vista laptop through the desktop PC XP SP2 which is wired to the router but I can't acces the desktop pc via the laptop which is connected wirelessly, though it shows it in the "Network" window. I get an error that says Windows cannot access (computer name) error code:0x80070035 network path was not found. Then it offers to diagnose and then when it has finished, it says "Cannot communicate with (Computer name) 192.168.1.3" This seems strange as I can access Vista with XP but not XP with Vista.

View 4 Replies View RelatedWindows Vista 64 home premium is arguably the most popular Operating System worldwide (for new computers) I have a legitimate copy of Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit DVD in my possession, with the key ready, and everything.
1. A consumer cannot upgrade xp Professional to vista HOME edition without a clean install
2. A consumer cannot upgrade a 32 bit OS to 64 bit OS without a clean install
3. Theres no such thing as XP Home 64 bit OS
4. The upgrade key fails to activate a clean install (works upgrade only)
There seems to be no upgrade path available. Is this true? If this is true, isnt the concept of a 64 bit Vista Home premium Upgrade DVD useless? and if that is also true, then why did microsoft sell me this DVD?

When you are in explorer and are manually typing in a long folder path or at a command prompt navigating through many directories, below are two cool tips that will help you save time.
The first is one that I have been using for years. When working at a command prompt, instead to typing in the full text of an item, just hit the tab key to bring up full items. For example, say I want to change the directory to the Windows folder. At a command prompt I would type in CD wind and then hit the tab key and "Windows" will automatically show up. Think of the tab key as a kind of auto complete for DOS. This same technique also works in Windows Explorer.....
Media center keeps popping up, I have not been able to find a way to disable it, so that I can use the program only when I want. It is very tiresome to keep have it. open when ever I pop a cd or dvd in to my drive. I would like some control over which program I use to view/listen to the media I have, and not have one pop up automatically.
