View 7 RepliesI've moved from Outlook Express on my XP desktop to Windows mail on my Vista laptop. I plan on moving to Outlook on both computers, but not until I get this folder thing straightened out. I was able to import my OE mail into Windows Mail ok. Then I had a hard drive failure on my laptop. I had backed up my mail files and I was able to restore my Windows Mail ok.
I had several "Recovered Folders", but they included everything. I moved all of my folders out of the recovered folders and placed them once more under the Inbox. Then I deleted the empty recovered folders.
Now I want to backup my mail, not using the Vista backup, but with a third party. So when I go into my Windows Mail folder in Windows Explorer, I find all of the "recovered folders" are still there. Now they're listed as Local Folders. I can't find the configuration of my folders as I see them in Windows mail at all. I have a "Backup" folder with a "new" folder inside of it with a windows file that is unopenable.
I've tried using Control Panel where I can't find Windows Mail as an option for default e-mail handler.
Tried changing by accessing Properties from Windows Mail but when I change to "Make this the defalut e-mail handler, apply and save then exit and return to Properties the setting has returned to Not the default e-mail handler.
I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium.
Note:
Control panel does show Windows mail as being the Default Newsgroup handler.
every time it opens it says its not the default. I can go to options and click make default which it accepts but after presing OK and reopening options it says again it is not the default mail handler I had thought that this ptoblem was linked to have outlook installed I have uninstalled this now and rebnooted but the problem persists linked to this problem perhaps is the fact that internet options only sees windows mail as a news handler

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an HP 7763w PC, which came with Vista. It has that vertical bay in the tower front for a backup (or portable?) drive, that can be popped in and out easily. I really would like to have XP on my machine again, but am a little concerned about changing the main HD, or making a partition on it, fearing unforeseen problems. Can I install it on the BU drive? Or what would be a good way to be able to boot into either OS at my choice?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a Vista Enterprise (SP1) and am trying to make file backup. As you know when we were running XP the backup tool allowed backing up data from mapped network drives and even would allow you to brows the network and (when provided with the right credentials) connect to certain network drives to chose data areas to bakup. Unless I am being very silly I just can not (forthe lif eof me) find out how to back up network drives. Ihave correctly mapped the drives with full permission but the mapped drive simply does not appear in the list of available areas to back up.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'd like to transfer my all windows mail / messages from Vista 32 bit to Vista 64 bit after installing clean Vista 64 bit on other Hard Drive which will be inserted as a new C; on the same PC. An old C: drive might / my not be included to this PC. An Easy Transfer is not in my case the best option. The Exporting from Vista Windows Mail does not back up all my folders and sub folders from Windows Mail directory. Not to mention that so called "Imported " folders are not the best to handle.

I have checked for *.PST in all indexed locations as well as all the hard drives in this computer. It made me create a profile (lvsysop) and I have searched the same locations for 'lvsysop' and "lvsysop.pst", but I can't find the file Windows Mail made. I've also checked for "outlook' and "Outlook.pst".Did it make a .PST file and if not what file did it make? It sure looked like it was making something as it scanned through the folders in Windows Mail.
View 7 Replies View RelatedUsing Vista Home Basic. Is there any way to backup EVERYTHING regarding my EMAIL? i.e. My messages, folders, contacts, message RULES. In other words After I do a complete format of my disk because VISTA has said I don't have a GENUINE Verision anymore after using it for more than 8 months and actually verifying the genuineness several times but i digress. So After I do my rebuild i would like to be able to restore my email functionality et all to it's current state with all the messages, folders, rules, etc. AM I asking TOO much in the year 2008 for this to be possible never mind easy?

The original folder contained recent email files.I have done numerous searches but alas no avail to a former location for my Windows Mail original folder. I have Windows Vista - Home Premium and the former email folder was the original folder with a new PC (Dell Inspiron 530).

View 4 Replies View RelatedWant to bring the look of the Windows 7 taskbar and interface to Windows Vista? Thanks to the hard work of a dedicated Vista user, everyone can download a special visual style for Windows Vista that will transform your pc.
Before you can install the new visual style the visual style engine must be patched to allow non-Microsoft visual styles. Check out my article on using VistaGlazz to do that...
my understaning is that you can back up the contents of the Windows Live Mail folder to back up your email. (ie, you can later copy that back into your Windows Live Mail folder to restore) But it seems doing so borks the Vista indexer. For example, if I:
1) back up my Windows Live Mail folder
2) load a "clean" Vista image back onto the PC
3) copy the backup into the Windows Live Mail folder
When I do this, the contents of the Windows Live Mail folder are no longer included in the Vista index. Am I doing something wrong? Shouldn't the restored copy have the same index behavior?
Does ANYONE out there know anything about importing music with the new Vista? We just bought our Dell from Best Buy and Dell tells us to call BB and BB tells us to call Dell or bring it in... here is whats going on... I want to make a DVD of our kids for my husband. Easy enough... well I want to add music (did it on our old laptop with Windows XP noooo problem!) well NOW... no matter WHAT music cd I RIP to Windows Media Player and try to import the music to the movie I get this message Track -- .wma is protected using digital rights management and cannot be imported.)
View 9 Replies View RelatedHow can I make my games run in a window? (For some reason, I prefer to play games in "windowed mode".) In XP you had to add something like "-w" on the shortcut thingy... But it doesn't work on Vista. I know how to do the "Windowed GUI" -thingy, but I think it quite doesn't help me. I even tried it, but the games still run in fullscreen. I have managed to make a few games run in a window, but that is because there was an option for it in the game options. Unfortunately for me, not all games have that kind of options. Or maybe I'm just blind, and I don't find that kind of things from the game options. *shrug*
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm one of those users who has been using Vista with no problems ever since Microsoft gave out RTM copies to beta testers. However, as a writer, I've watched the media completely destroy the public opinion of Vista, leading many to stick with Windows XP or to look for alternatives, even before they had tried Vista. Even with SP1 out, many have not bothered trying Vista on recent hardware and therefore could not realize the fact that it really is worthy of being XP's successor. If I had to lay the blame on one party for Vista's poor public opinion, I wouldn't lay it on Microsoft, I wouldn't lay it on hardware companies incapable of producing good drivers, I wouldn't lay it on the fact that XP is so good, I would lay it on the media for blowing things out of proportions.
Yes, the problem is exaggeration (it's in this article's title too, in case you missed it); bloggers and journalists alike use their personal experiences to prove their point in their writing. The blame doesn't solely lie with us, as Vista was by no means perfect, but we did manage to amplify the problems beyond reason. And if the beta is anything to go by, Windows 7 is going to fly. This is, by far, the best beta operating system the software giant has ever released. The media has locked on to this, and is using exaggeration already, before Windows 7 is even ready for prime time. Full Story: What killed Vista will make Windows 7 fly
My computer crashed & I had to repair the system. The User that I entered is "xxxxxx". When I restored my backup files to their original location my mail box, which I had relocated from its default location to "Documents", reinstalled to the user name of my original installation "xxx". I then started Windows Mail and selected the mail box to that location. However when I try to restart Windows Mail I get the following "Windows Mail could not be started. The application was unable to openthe Windows Mail message store. Your Windows Mailmailbox data is currently being used by another program...............(0x800C0155)"When I click OK I get a window showing "Windows Mail could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be initialized. Is there a solution other than repairing Vista again?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI want to backup my emails in Win Mail (Vista home premium) - all of them so theres hundreds of them in dozens of folders I have created. So I go file - export - messages, select a format, select an EMPTY folder on my 1TB external drive, then try to export. I either get an error message telling me that some files may be corrupt, or that the destination folder may be too small. Or if I select just a tiny folder to export, it says export successful, but it only exports ONE email - the top one in the list I think? I really dont think I have corrupted files here - any folder I select to export seems to have a problem... as my motherboard is flakey, and I want to do the backup ASAP before it 'flakes' again!
