View 4 RepliesI did a complete PC backup of my system onto an external USB HDD using the backup facility in VISTA Ultimate. When I went to do a complete PC restore I am told form the Help info on VISTA Ultimate to restart my computer, push F8 and choose the 'repair' option to run the restore. WHen I do this I get the safe mode options, debugging mode etc etc but there is no 'repair' mode. How do I get to the repair mode??

Holy ****. Games, Personalization, System Restore, System Backup (Error code 1068), User Accounts, and Windows Update. They show up, and then they dissapear right away. Any help please? Virusscan'd with AVG, tested hardware, it's clean, I dont know whats wrong.

I'm running Vista Ultimate on a Dell XPS1330 notebook. I used the Vista back up computer tool to make images of the system c: drive and a second data partition. These were written to a USB hard drive as H:ComputerNameBackup 2009-05-22 162639etc. I have since formatted and re-partitioned the on board hard drive and expected to be able to restore my system and data onto the new partitions. I have tried to restore from a Vista Recovery CD and from within Vista, after re-installing, but it always fails to see the backup.
I have also tried copying the back up folder onto a ntfs partition, but it still wasn't recognised.
I have an HP laptop that came with Vista Home Premium installed.
Two drivers, the C: driver as usual and a 'D:' driver also known as "HP_RECOVERY".
Now my question is very simple and basic yet I'm baffled not figuring out a way to do it.
Is it possible to clone the image of the OS I'm running currently to that D: drive? What software do I use to do that?
I will also need to mention that the drive size is ~8GB so it's very small. If there is a way to clone the current image to that drive, i will have to extend it and make it bigger, how would you do that also
I have vista home premium and a new Laptop. I need to make System Backups (complete drive c I realize that Toshiba put so much junk software on my new laptop but could not see it's way to include a System Backup.
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy Vista Home premium doesn't offer Complete PC backup, and in any case I am not so sure I miss that facility?. What I want is some means to create a CD or DVD from which I can boot my machine and in case I need it reinstall my Vista with all upgrades that were applied at the time I made that backup. If that backup includes all my installed programs at the time so much the better, but backup of my user data is a separate issue that causes me no problem.
I once experienced a situation with my older XP machine where I had to reinstall Windows XP from the original recovery CD, after which my machine entered a long process of installing all the upgrades that had been issued since my PC was new. That was not "funny". If Vista (Home premium) offers this facility and I have just overlooked it, OK. If there exists some (reputable) third party product that offers it, OK.

I upgraded to a new larger hard drive but the start up disc I created doesn't contain the operating system. I know it's the disc because I tried my startup disc from my other computer and it goes through all of the microsoft motions to the point where it says "This disc is not for this computer". How do I make a start updisc from my Gateway that will contain the operating system so I can use my new hard drive?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop with a 320 gig hard drive divided into 4 partitions. I am dual booting Xp Professional and Vista Business 32 bit Edition. I plan on upgrading to Ultimate as soon as Microsoft ships it to me. I have 2 partitons for XP, 1 for vista, and 1 as a shared partition that has mydocuments and email settings so that both systems can access them. If I use Complete PC Backup and select all partitions will this backup everything ot a 500 gig external, including the boot records so that if I do oa complete pc restore it will restore it so that my boot menu is restoreed in the event of a hd failure? Also, when I get vista ultimate, I plan on using Bit Locker to encrypt my Vista partition. Will that affect the complete pc backup of that partition or any of the others?

The backup utility will only give me two choices. 1) a full system backup or 2) a backup of the files mentioned above since the previous backup. View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a Vista Home Premium system that will not start. It gets as far as the system bootup progress bar, tries to start then suddenly the system shuts down. I have tried every possible recovery/repair technique I could find and still no luck. The system is using a Intel motherboard with Matrix Storage RAID which I have configured as RAID 1. In the repair console (from Vista DVD) I can read the drive from a prompt window so I assume the data is safe. I would like to back up the user data (photos, docs, email) and do a reinstall without the RAID 1 configuration. I have heard there are problems with Vista and the Matrix Storage controller.
Question is: How would I go about backing up a non-bootable Vista drive? I have another system running XP pro that I could mount the Vista drive to and copy the data to a portable USB drive. Is this a possibility? Will I run into any "access denied" issues when saving the data off to a backup drive? Also, the system was using Outlook 03 for email. What is the best way to recover the Outlook email data (messages, addresses, etc.) from a non-bootable disk? Is this email data in the same location as it is with XP?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a WD MyBook 1TB external hard drive. It's a replacement for a LaCie drive that I broke accidentally. Because I broke my LaCie, which held all my backups, I need to do a full system backup so I have one on file. (I'm running Windows Vista Business SP1 on a Compaq Presario laptop. I've tried this both before and after SP1 and have got the same result.)
The weekly file-only backups I have scheduled with Windows Backup work fine. It's only the full system backup that gives me problems. Everything goes as planned: I select the MyBook as the destination, and Windows starts the backup. Once it gets near the end (I'd say about 90% done according to the status bar), I get the blue crash screen. Unless I'm missing something there, or it's something other than a driver issue.
I have a 720GB internal drive that I've maxed out with automated weekly backups. I have another drive with a lot of space, and my question is, can Vista backup be set to continue the existing backup onto an additional drive. In other words, the backup files would be spread over two drives?

Basically, I have a sneaky suspition that one of the drives is going to fail in the near future, so I backup quite regularly, but when I replace it, I want to get a bigger drive, as it's only a 150gig raptor, and I really would prefer a 500 or 1TB 7200rpm drive for storage.
Can vista restore the files I backed up on D: (the 150gig) to a new D: which would be a large disk ? If it can, could I also do the same for C: which is where vista is located? If that doesn't work,

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've moved from Outlook Express on my XP desktop to Windows mail on my Vista laptop. I plan on moving to Outlook on both computers, but not until I get this folder thing straightened out. I was able to import my OE mail into Windows Mail ok. Then I had a hard drive failure on my laptop. I had backed up my mail files and I was able to restore my Windows Mail ok.
I had several "Recovered Folders", but they included everything. I moved all of my folders out of the recovered folders and placed them once more under the Inbox. Then I deleted the empty recovered folders.
Now I want to backup my mail, not using the Vista backup, but with a third party. So when I go into my Windows Mail folder in Windows Explorer, I find all of the "recovered folders" are still there. Now they're listed as Local Folders. I can't find the configuration of my folders as I see them in Windows mail at all. I have a "Backup" folder with a "new" folder inside of it with a windows file that is unopenable.
Not sure why but when I try to open system restore I get this message: "System Protection Settings has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." I cannot make or restore my computer. If I go into system protection I get this error: C:WindowsSystem32SYSDM.CPL is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.

I bought this computer back in april. after I bought it I purchased a new program called Advanced System Optimizer. When I google for information on a quality utility program this program had very high recommendations. I also have Fit-It utilities 7 and an older version of System Mechanic. My computer is running slower now and I know it needs cleaning up. The last time months ago right after I purchase Advance System Optimizer I ran the registry cleaner and it reeked havok on my system. I called the company and they told me their program I purchased was not designed for 64bit systems. Of course they didn't refund my money. Question is: My computer needs cleaning up I can tell it is running slower than it used to. What utility program is out there that will work on my system. She just clicked all the exits and got off of the internet and now she is locked out of her computer. We can't get system restore to work, Can't get safe mode to work, She has AVG 8 installed but cannot start it. Tried SFC /scannow but was denied access. Tried putting the Windows XP disk in to do a repair and was unable to get it to start. I think the only thing to do is reformat the HD and start over but her PC ignores the A drive and the dvd drives. I cannot get into it in order to re format it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a problem currently with Windows Vista Ultimate(Integrale), this occurred last Friday evening. I was finishing off a word document when suddenly all went black. As an end user I assumed this was a system crash and so rebooted my system, then ran registry repair, then checked for viruses etc with Live OneCare, eventually reloaded Vista all to no avail. Each time I rebooted I was greeted by a black screen after logging in.
I called my tech support who could not help but I did manage to gain access to the internet and after a short while found an item entitled Black Screen Death. This reported that all my problems where due to Microsoft thinking I had a non genuine copy of Vista it went on to explain how you could circum-navigate the problem (this I did and even though I have to repeat this process each time I log on I can use Windows normally). I purchased my copy of Vista Ulitimate from a large chain store at the not give away price of over 400 Euros and registered the same online on the day of installation and have been running for sometime with other Microsoft products including Live OneCare. Why then am I suddenly crippled for an entire weekend by Microsoft security and how can I rectify the situation perminently
I am trying to get rid of system restore shadow copies on my Vista home premium. I keep getting system error when I try to reduce the room used on my C drive as I only have 28gb of 145gb left. I have tried typing in:vssadmin list shadowstorage For the above command to run you must use elevated privileges:
1.. Click on the Start menu then click All Programs / Accessories
2.. Right Click on the Command Prompt option and from the drop down menu click on the Run as Administrator option
3.. At the command prompt type vssadmin list shadowstorage and Press Enter
(NOTE: if the command does not run change directories to c:windowssystem32) After the vssadmin has executed you will see results similar to the following:.....

The maximum space allocated for System restore is 2.092 GB To view the number of restore points you currently have on your Computer run the following command vssadmin list shadows Next, to reduce the allocated space used by Vista's System Restore, use the following command: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /on=[OnVolumeSpec:] /for=[ForVolumeSpec:] /maxsize=[MaxSizeSpec] Where example: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /On=C: /For=C: /Maxsize=1GB When decreasing the space allocated to System Restore, you will loose the earlier system restore points. The advantage is gaining extra free space. If you are concerned with losing the previous restore points, wait until you do not need them anymore before reducing the allocated space. If you plan on upgrading to Windows Vista or running a clean install and will need extra space, consider reducing the space after installation has completed. It is not recommended to disable System Restore. I have a system that has FAT16 file system on it. I have that file system on that for some reason so I don’t need to upgrade on that….but recently I had some files deleted and now I need to get them back. They are important for my official use and hold great importance. I know that there is software for recovery but since I have a FAT16 file system I guess that all won’t work on that.

I save entire disk images to a second internal hard drive that is partitioned just for backing up entire images of my primary hard drive.
Windows analyzed and suggests defragging but should I defrag the backups? The suggestion to defrag is not for my primary hard drive.
I'm concerned my system may crash and I have no back up and recovery disk or Vista installation disk. I was told I could order one from the manufacturer but I'm wondering if there is a way to create one after setup. I have a XP Home Edition I suppose I could use but I would rather create a Vista backup, if possible.
