View 4 RepliesI am running Vista 64 and installed a program which apparently had a virus or I got it using IE8. I found an entry in the start up tab that was causing a problem. I went into the registry and deleted the item from the startup tab and I also disabled it in the startup tab. The startup tab still shows the item even though it is disabled and deleted from the registry. Why does it still show in MSCONFIG and how do I delete it from the start up entry
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have just puchased my first Windows Vista computer - an HP laptop. I have purchased at leat five laptops since 2000 so I am familiar with setup and
comfortable with installations etc. I have three questions here.
1. My last computer had Windows XP and an 80 gb hard drive with 70 gb full - After copying the data only (55 GB) to my new 250 gb hard drive I have only 107 GB remaining of the 222 GB C drive partition. I have not yet added many programs. That tells me that Vista must be using 50-60 GB or more of the drive. Can that be correct?
2. My new computer takes 5-6 minutes to start up. After two minutes I get the welcome screen. Then the monitor goes black for a full two minutes before continuing the startup process. Is this normal for Vista?
3. Occasionally the monitor goes dark for a few seconds and a window pops up saying the display driver has failed but is back. Is this normal?
I certainly gained no speed with this new computer. There are many things I like about Vista. Since I have no previous experience with owning it I am trying to sort out if this computer is a lemon that should be returned or if I should just put up with the downside.
The last couple of days I had a few times a startup error. It said something like Windows couldn't start normally. Run Startup Recovery (Recommended) Start Windows Normally. I did the Startup Recovery and then it worked again but the next day or so the same thing, otherwise my system runs fine.
View 9 Replies View Relatedwhen i turn on my computer, an error message comes saying "Windows failed to load because a file is missing or corrupt File: Netio.sys Status: 0xc0000221" This started when i was clearing my computer of useless programs, and after i deleted Realtime player or Quicktime player, (can't remember which) an error message jumped from the taskbar saying something about Network device driver. After that every time i start the computer, the "Windows failed to load" message pops up. The first half a year, it was solved by pressing enter, to "Choose an operating system to start: Windows Vista" and then to "Windows error recovery (start windows normally, safe mode etc)" and back to "Windows failed to start", repeating it 3-20 times. Then i had a familiar "Unexpected shutdown" during a game, and now, the "Enter spamming technique" doesn't work anymore. All i can access at the moment is Windows memory diagnostic tool, and Bios setup utility. Is there any way to fix this through the setup utility or some other manner?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI can't find a way to search for file types in Vista without entering part of a file name. For example, if I want to search my C drive for all PDF files or all photos, the search function won't work without entering text from a file name (which doesn't work, because all files of a particular type don't necessarily share letters or characteristics in their names). Has anyone else experienced this problem, or am I missing something?
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhenever I request a "File|Open" or "File|Save" from any application, the mini-Windows-Explorer dialog box that opens freezes and hangs the entire application. Happens with almost all applications. Not limited to just Microsoft programs. It does not matter if I like change the download folder or if I rt click always the same.
Back when it was under warranty Hp tells me to just restore to original settings. I hate to do that. But I am about to see that this might be the only fix for it. (But I am hoping not.) I think it started a long time ago when I was changing the USB ports I used for my external Hard drive and it changed drive letter. (maybe maybe not.. just seems I remember that being something that had happened when I first recall things hanging...) anyway I have all drives in the place I want them now and this issue still happens even if I dont have that external drive plugged in.
When I open a folder with a list of files for all View Options, the files are not listed in proper ascending sequence. I indexed the files to make sure that indexing may not be the factor in the Sort By Name not working properly. After the files were indexed, clicked the Sort By Name item in the View menu item, and the files are stilled not sorted porperly. Has anyone encountered this similar problem ? I suspect this may be a bug in Windows Vista File System. The folder had 87 files in it.

View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen I open a folder of files anywhere in Vista Ultimate, the file icons appear all white (blank) with the file name underneath. If I switch the View to medium or extra large file icons they appear normal and when I switch the view back to large, they again appear normal. However, after a few minutes, when I open the same folder, they are again all white (blank).
View 5 Replies View RelatedI had tried to move a file from another folder to my desktop. File move was taking forever and I had cancelled out. But it created a file on my desktop which is corrupted and the original file is corrupted (neither will open). I cannot delete this file from my desktop or other location now and it has seemed to slow down my PC. When I try to delete, I get a popup box that says "Recycling 1 item... from Desktop, Discovered 0 items (0 bytes)" and it just stays in an neverending do loop. After looking on internet, I have seen that Vista has issues deleting or even moving files.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMicrosoft removed the legacy Windows Help .hlp file viewer, winhlp32.exe, from Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2. Dating back to Windows 3.1, Microsoft says the Windows Help components have not been updated in years and no longer meets internal standards. If you have an older application that still uses .hlp files and must be able to view .hlp files Microsoft has released an add-on that will restore the viewer...

This is no longer lacated in C:UsersRoyBoyFavorites. Verify the item's location and try again................
View 8 Replies View RelatedI dl'd Mozilla Firefox a day ago, and everything dl'd correctly and completely. But, when I shut down the cpu, it wouldn't start up at all. I did every diagnostic i could let the cpu do, ran a system restore (went all the way back to 10/25/09 restore point). then, i got it to run in safe mode. played with start-up options, and got the desktop to come up in normal mode, but then got error msg 0x800106ba (windows defender won't load), this meant that none of my security stuff loaded either. i ran a chkdisc thing too, and it stopped when looking through file data (stopped at 16%). thus, i am running the cpu in safe mode with networking, and the cpu is running fine. i know this means that there is a file issue. but i am not sure how to find it.
View 6 Replies View Relatedi have begun to notice a particular startup item by the name of MSASCul.exe, now google has been confusing it with MSASCui.exe which turns out to be windows defender, so still somewhat confused i have obtained autoruns and tried a verification on msascul.exe only for autoruns to come back as not verified, googling so far the correct msascul.exe has brought little information up and would hopefully like some verification on if its a genuine executable or some little nasty i need to catch.

View 5 Replies View RelatedHi, i am trying to use the startup repair function booting from my vista disc. I have set it in BIOS so that it boots from the cd/dvd drive first. I put the disc in and restart and when it comes up saying boot from cd/dvd press any key i do so. The problem is everytime i do that my pc just starts up normally and doesn't load the vista disc so i cannot get on the options and run startup repair.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI had my laptop out for repairs, and when I got it back they had enabled the auto log on at startup. I don't like this because that way anyone could get into my computer when they turn it on.
How do I DIS-able this? I've found plenty of sites that enables it, but I don't want it on. Undoing the checkmark in the place that does it on Vista doesn't seem to do the trick.
I have built up a new system...been running perfectly since August 2008.
2 nights ago I had just finished an update to itunes and some other apple software which required a restart. Upon restart, the system hung while booting.didn't get to the user account log-in screen.it froze with a blackscreen with the mouse cursor sitting there in the middle.
I have done the following things and observed the following behaviour:I have not added any hardware to the system Windows Update has doing automatic updates the systems boots and runs perfectly in safe mode with networking I have reverted to a couple of different restore points prior to installing the apple software...no change I have disabled all non-Microsoft software from starting up via Windows Defender...no change I can get the system to boot to where it displays the user accounts login screen. When I click on an account and enter the password it will hang at that point. Mouse continues to respond but no further response. Disk drive light goes solid but no sound of the disk operating If at the user account log in screen I select to shut the system down it will hang during shutdown checking the event logs shows a range of various fatal errors.I can provide more info on this at later posts if needed but the messages look quite similar to other posts given for a range of different behaviours so I am not sure which if any are relevant. Booting to the Vista CD and doing a repair found no errors. In short, my perfectly happy and functioning system has suddenly gone mental for no obvious reason.
I've just noticed that Defender isn't running, even though the Registry key(HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun) is there. The path specified by this key (%ProgramFiles%Windows DefenderMSASCui.exe -hide) is valid. I can copy and paste it into a Run box and the process appears in the Task Manager (and stays there until I reboot). If I view the System Startup page in Spybot S&D the key exists. I've actually changed '%ProgramFiles%' to 'C:Program Files' (without the quotes) to see if it makes a difference - it doesn't. If I view the Startups tab in The Ultimate Troubleshooter it
finds the key but shows File Not Found in the Launch Command field.I'm at a bit of a loss. I thought perhaps the permissions had got screwed up for either the Windows Defender folder or the executable itself, but if that were the case, should I be able to run the command manually? In any case, the permissions can't be edited. Everything's greyed out.I'm quite happy to run without Defender; I'd just rather be the one who
decides. I'm concerned that to all intents and purposes it's supposed to be running but isn't.
Does Vista take as long to startup as everyone. Is using it a satisfying experience or a frustrating one? Does it hang a lot? I need a new computer but am turned off by Vista reviews. I am considering a Mac. Should a take the plunge or not?

I restarted my PC using the button located on the actual computer. Then it prompted me to go into Safe Mode or Normal Mode. I went into normal mode and the same thing happened. I tried to restore my computer to an earlier date, which restored successfully, but it still freezes. I am now in Safe Mode with Networking and dont know how to get to Full Mode without it freezing.

For the moment, I have the Logitech entries still DISABLED in the startup.

View 5 Replies View Relatedwhenevr i start my computer it goes to a black screen that gives me 2 options:
1. fix start-up problams (recommended) -or something like that
2. start windows normally
whenever i choose the 1st option it waits 2 seconds and then goes back to that black screen the secont option- it starts loading windows for a long time (about a minut, a minut and a half) and then it gives me a blue screen that says something about problems (i cant read it, becouys it disappears 2 fast-there are percents running down...) and than goes back 2 tha black screen. i pressed some buttons and then it gave me some options , i chose 2 start windows in a safe mode, but -again!!!!-that damn black SCREEN
again, i pressed some buttons and it gave me the same optionsa and i chose to boot windows in a way that it would give me the last document it faild 2 open or something like that (that's what the description said, anyway...). it gave me another blue screen (after he tried starting windows) that gave me some kinda data path and the said: partitons: 2 and then something in '[ ]' and lower it said: enter=submit. esc=cancel. silly of me, i know, but i pressed enter, and it brought me to a blue screen that said: *** STOP: 0X0000005C ( 0X0000010B,0X00000003, 0X00000000, 0X00000000). i run a searc in google and all the people who had this problem said they first tried 2 install a new windows- but i didnt!!! the computer worked just fine, and then it fell from a height of about 4 feet, but it kept working until my sister closed it and the opened again.
Is there a setting to make Windows Mail display the Newsgroups instead of email on startup.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm having problems with Vista on my parents office computer, and i'm trying to keep from having to reinstall everything! I've looked all over google trying to find other peeps with the same problem, but I still havn't found a solution. The computer is an HP Pavilion, with Vista Home Premium. While starting up, after the welcome screen, it takes me to my desktop. All I can see is the curser and the background. It's as if explorer.exe will not start.
I can't start explorer.exe, because ctrl, alt, dlt, will not work at all. I've tried this in safe mode also, but it yields the same results. I've also gone into command prompt and checked the regedit to see if the shell or w/e for explorer.exe was screwed up, but everything looks fine there. And regedit is the only thing I have been able to start in command prompt, system restore and explorer.exe will not start from there, well, they will start but they will not display at all. Its like everything is running in the background.
I recently pulled a friend's ASUS G50V running on Windows Vista Home Premium x64 out to try and repair. The notebook itself is about 14 months old, but was only running for about 3 before it began giving him problems. He shelved it and bought a new one, and recently offered it to me if I could get it running..but post 12 month warrenty and lack of startup/backup discs is giving me hell. Anyways, here's what it's doing, and what I've tried so far.
