Hidden Junction Folders Appeared Not Working

Feb 6, 2009

I'm finally getting around to really exploring Vista for the first time, and I found a bunch of hidden junction folders that, at first glance, appeared not to be working. Of course, I later realized that there was a Deny permission issue going on, and after Googling it, I discovered that that was by design. "Why deny folder browsing only?" I won't ask, but fine, it's by design. I suspect that early on, I might have deleted one or two of these apparently non-functioning junctions. Is there a way to get Vista to re-create the default junctions? Or do I even need to...will it do so automatically when an older app tries to use them?

Junction Points Public Folders

Jul 29, 2009

I am running vista business sp2. Malware is identifying problem files in my public folders but is inable to delete them. When I run "dir /AL" in the comand prompt in the publicdocuments directory I get the following:

Volume in drive C is Server 1TB1_P1 (VU_C)
Volume Serial Number is CF4C-9E98

Directory of C:UsersPublicDocuments

02/11/2006 08:41 AM My Music [E:UsersPublicMusic]
02/11/2006 08:41 AM My Pictures [E:UsersPublicPictures]
02/11/2006 08:41 AM My Videos [E:UsersPublicVideos]
0 File(s) 0 bytes
3 Dir(s) 280,166,969,344 bytes free

This is obviously not correct since E: is my CD/DVD drive. On my other computer, the redirection is to C: and not E: How do I restore these junction points to the correct locations?

Hidden Files & Folders

Mar 23, 2008

I have enabled viewing hidden files and folders. Still, some folders and files are hidden from me! Here is an example: I navigate to eMule folder, which should contain Incoming folder, but does not. I start up eMule, go to Tools and select Go To Incoming Folder and the folder opens up normally showing the files I have downloaded. This problem also exists with a game I own. I'm not able to view the map files I have created with the game. Yet when I start the editor and choose to open a previous map file, it is nicely there in the folder it is supposed to be in.

I use Explorer in classic view. When I use the Folder Options dialog to change the options to show hidden files or system files, the change is applied in the file pane but not in the folder pane. To get it to apply there I have to close Explorer and restart it. Is there a way to get this to work right?

Backup And Restore: Hidden Application Data Folders

Jan 27, 2010

I have two user accounts on my computer. My administrator account that I very rarely ever use, and my normal, general user account I named "Bob1". I use Vista Windows Mail as my email application. I just searched and found the "hidden" folder where my Windows Mail stuff is (C:UsersBob1AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindows Mail Local Folders & Microsoft Communities & Compact & Backup) I save everything to my Bob1 user account to the appropriate folder (Documents in documents folder, pictures into pictures folder, etc.) I never vary from this habit.

I have been backing up using Vista32 backup. It gives me the option to backup "Pictures, Music, Videos, E-mail, Document, TV-shows, Compressed files, Additional files". I check all of these options so all are backed up. It comes on automatically every day to backup anything new or changed.

I checked the restore part of vista32 backup & restore found in control panel. I looked up Bob1 and all my folders are there. It appeared the application data folders were there (difficult to find because the application data folders are hidden). I specifically checked the Windows Mail folders in the hidden application data folders and they were there. It appeasers everything is backed up.........

Documents Folder Hidden In Public Folders, But Cannot Unhide

May 17, 2008

I have what appears to be an odd issue, and I can't find reference to it on the web anywhere. Under the Public folder on my Vista machine, I can see the folders Public Downloads, Public Music etc. BUT Public Documents is missing.

If I use the cmd shell, I get the same effect:
Directory of C:UsersPublic
11/05/2008 16:54 .
11/05/2008 16:54 ..
13/04/2008 08:37 Downloads
11/05/2008 16:54 3,403,458 Library.xml
11/05/2008 17:13 Music
15/02/2008 18:16 Perl
12/02/2008 19:15 Pictures
26/04/2008 08:25 Recorded TV
05/04/2008 11:11 Videos

HOWEVER the documents folder does exist. I can CD into it and see my files. From within explorer, I can enter C:UsersPublicDocuments explicitly and get to the folder, but is does not show up under C:usersPublic.....

Junction Versus Symlinks

Jun 13, 2008

I am still little confused about NTFS junctions.

I know that symlink and symlinkd are special files ( mklink, mklink /D ) little related to shortcuts.

They are managed in filesystem level, being transparent to programs.

I know hardlink (mklink /H) is an alternate name a/o path file atribute, given to the same file record in MFT.

But junction - is it de facto a hardlink to folder ?

Beside of scope of targetting, what is functional and usage difference between junction and symlinkd ?

How To Create Junction Points

Mar 25, 2008

I had previously used a JBOD array of 3 hard disks to create a single volume in which to store all my music and videos. To make a long story short, I'm no longer using this JBOD array. I still want to store my music and videos on these three drives, but when I use Media Player to add to the library, I only want to be able to specify one folder, but the scan must go across all three drives (drives H:, I: & J.I want to store my primary library in "H:Media", and have junction points directing to "I:Music (Secondary)" and "J:Videos". It is my understanding that Junction Points can help. The question is, how to create a Junction Point?

Slow File Access After Removing Junction Point

Mar 25, 2008

running Vista Ultimate 64bit. I created a junction point which mapped to my User folder on external hard drive. Then removed this junction point and pointed it back to the default C:Users... location but ever since the file system is terrible slow even on basic operations such as rename file. So it's NOT a slow copy/move file issue, just that all basic file functions are terrible slow. It doesn't matter if it's in my Users folder or elsewhere. As you can imagine this is making my Vista installation completely useless as software such as Visual Studio is hanging on basic operations. I've done everything I can think of - defragging, turning off Search/Indexing service... still the same

Pictures Appeared BUT Only Thumbnails Of Them

Nov 9, 2008

I have managed to lose all of my daughters photographs from when she was born until today. Basically my machine has been playing up for a while and I attempted to create a 'things to move' folder on the desktop to send all my important stuff too for when my external hard drive arrives on Monday. However I stupidly copied all of the data from the 'my documents' folder that sat on my desktop. This contained 'my desktop' and things spiraled as the 'things to move' folder was on the desktop but now also contained my desktop within it. Loads of error messages came up and I tried to back track by moving everything to a new location directly on the C: Drive.

I went to check the data tonight and couldn't find my daughters pics (they were stored in their own folder on the desktop itself) so i clicked the start button and typed the name of them. Low and behold in the search results all of my pictures appeared BUT only the thumbnails of them. If you click on the image to open it, it says it has been deleted or moved. It refers to the file name my documents/desktop/things to move/desktop/things to move/desktop......yadiyadiyada and despite searching everywhere I can't find the originals.

Outlook Suddenlty Appeared Washed Out

Mar 5, 2010

my Office docs, inc Outlook and even the pages on IE have suddenly appeared washed out and a lot brighter. It is making my eyes strain and the blue wording you often see on IE pages such as on forums, is faint now, at least the small words that are often to the side of boxes etc. I did a system restore and that came back as successful but there was no change to the bright pages, they are still bright and washed out. All of the boxes for instance in Outlook at the bottom left of the screen, are all bright and washed out, everything is.

I've not been fiddling with buttons anywhere or altered any settings. I'd like to have it back the way it was. I do a bit of gaming with the table lamp off and I may have hit a key combination and ended up with it due to that. I don't know for sure. Does anyone know a sure way to make my screen look normal again? I'm using Vista Home Premium OS and my graphics card is NVIDIA 950GT.

System Frozen, Windows Logo Not Appeared

Jan 11, 2010

I was watching a programme online and noticed my other open windows seemed to have frozen (the cursor was doing the busy rotating "o" symbol and when I attempted to bring up the other windows nothing happened). Ultimately even the window I had open froze so I tried CTRL-ALT-DELETE to open Task Manager. Nothing happened. I turned off my laptop and turned it back on. I selected "Start Windows Normally" and got as far as the Microsoft Corporation page with the loading bar...but the Windows logo never appeared. After about 10 mins I freaked out and turned off my laptop again. Tried turning it on again, was given the option of Startup Repair. Chose this option, but still ended up at the Microsoft Corporation page with a futile loading bar as if nothing had happened. Any ideas what's wrong? Have tried selecting Vista as operating system from Setup Menu, but still nada.

Folder Odd Behaviour; Junction / Hardlink, Rename Folder?

Jul 22, 2009

I have C & D drives, I use D for mundane filesdownloads and portable apps. However, I have a few folders that's are different from any I've seen. I don't know how to explain it other than using a detailed example.

I have D:Folder1
I can rename Folder1 to whatever I want.
E.g it will appear as D:NewFolder
However the dir location of it still points to D:Folder1

I have also scanned the registry for D:Folder1 and D:NewFolder there are no references of it. I've reformatted the C: drive multiple times and reinstalled windows. So I know it's nothing to this specific windows installation (the folders have been like this for about a year) It's not really a problem, I love it because I can rename the folder without messing up links etc. At first I thought it might be a junction, however in cmd it still shows as <Dir> not <Junction> I also checked for hidden folders on the drive. I found nothing.

TaskBar Is Hidden Behind IE

Jan 4, 2009

(i'm running vista 32bit SP1, i hope its not too out of place to ask a question in a 64bit forum)

this looks like the closest i've found to a forum w/ my prob.

essentially i backed up my HD on an external (western digital) using "second backup" as the backup software.

i noticed after backing up that all my folder icons (favorites, contacts, music, pictures, etc...) reverted to the generic yellow folder.

i was able to change one or two (and only those in the shortcuts in "favorite links" heading of a windows explorer window) by right click -> properties -> change icon but all the folders (in their actual location eg. c:users"username") remain the ugly yellow folder.

changing them one by one seems inefficient and if annoying if it were to occur again.

i've done the right-click on destop -> personalize -> change desktop icon -> restore default, no result (tho i didnt really expect one since the desktop icons arent really the issue)

i've rebuilt the icon cache, no luck.

i've re-written the desktop.ini for a couple of them, no result (tho i didnt really expect one)

system restore isn't an option, i dont have an old enough restore point (hense the need for backing up).

i'm wondering of a systemic way to essentially restore the default icons for all these folders (music, video, downloads, etc...) and their respective shortcuts.
