Expanding Boot Times

Jun 6, 2008

im currently experiencing a longer boot time for no real reason. After a fresh install i did all the usual junk. finally i decided to run a registry clean, then update my experience score. Rebooted everything was fine, then cam back after i went out & bootup took 3 times longer! I have a very powerful system & u can imagine the frustration of having to wait after it only took about 30seconds to boot b4.

I dont suspect the registry clean, all it did was remove reference to some files i had deleted hours earlier but i could be wrong. Luckily i had made a full backup before i ran the reg cleaner etc so ill have a try at restoring & see if it happens when i do nothing to it. i had disabled some services first thing but not sure that would do anything about 2 hours afterwards.

Speed Up Boot Times?

Mar 22, 2008

The "problem" - Vista boot times. The fastest Ive ever managed to get it was 25 seconds, thats from the moment you see the green bar, to the moment the desktop appears. Ive all features on (effects etc) along with the sidebar, resolution is 1290 (?) x 1080 on a 50" plasma TV. Now granted, 25 seconds isnt long to wait, however what I DONT understand is how my girlfriends Sony Vaio laptop (around 1.5ghz dualcore, 1GB RAM) loads Vista (all be it 32bit) in 19 seconds.

Surely having 8GB RAM means faster boot times? I originally thought that my RAM was too slow (533mhz) so upgraded to 800mhz (fastest I can go) but no effect. I then read about Raptor drives being FAST, so installed one purely for the OS, it makes marginal difference. Ive altererd the boot to show 4 processors, timeout delay 3 seconds, nothing to be started at startup.

Ive even installed a stripped down version of Vista 64 HomePremium, taking out loads of things I dont use, again doesnt make that much of a difference. Ive heard of others getting their system to load (with the same config as mine) in 12 seconds?!! Again, yes this is truly, truly picky, but hoep someone can shed some light on this forum as to why a system 4 times faster and more powerfull.. takes longer to boot up?

How To Expanding C Drive

Mar 30, 2008

I have a Gateway notebook, originally installed with XP. Of course it came with the small restore partition (E. Since I've upgraded to Vista, I no longer need that restore partition and would like to expand C:, but I haven't been able to do so. I've gone into Disk Management, shrunk E:, deleted E:, but neither of these maneuvers resulted in the option to expand C:. Is it possible that the problem is that there is no free space in C: that is contiguous with E:? Would it help to defragment C:? Would that open up free space at the end of drive C:?

Shrinking/expanding Basic Volumes?

Feb 6, 2009

I just wanted to confirm a few things before I screwed up something (like, my OS). Usually, I'd use Partition Magic to resize partitions, but apparently, Vista includes something quite similar (and PM won't work on Vista) so I thought I'd give it a go. Also, this is with basic volumes, not dynamic. I have a single hard drive partitioned as: Primary Extended - contains logical partitions

1. When you shrink the size of the extended, does the extra space become available near the primary partition or after the extended? The reason I ask is because, I've read that the space you're adding to the primary must be adjacent to the primary partition. So, where does the extra space show up?

2. I've heard some people say you can't resize the primary partition without totally screwing up the OS. How likely is it that I'll ruin the OS by ADDING space? I could see a screw-up coming after shrinking a partition, but what about by extending?

Vista Stalls And Reboots At Expanding Files Prompt

Feb 14, 2009

I have a customer's machine on the slab that had a corrupted copy of Vista installed on it and tried every rescue technique I could find (Vista recovery DVD, XP CD, WinPE and a few others) finally using Linux to backup the customer's files.

Installing from an OEM copy of Vista seems to be problematic at best, it stalled at 23% then rebooted, so I repaired the drive in XP and got to 56% before the reboot. So I nuked the drive with a slow format in XP and then it got to 70% before rebooting. It sounds like hard drive related but the customer's video card fan had dropped off so I suspect it may also be a heat related issue. Does anyone else have any ideas for the reboots?

Right/left-expanding & Dropdown Menus Suddenly Open In Random Directions.

Dec 12, 2009

A typical Windows multiple-choice menu, e..g. right/left-expanding or dropdown; for example try right-click on empty desktop area and select View or SortBy, which in turn also leads to other menus. Or in Internet Explorer click View-->Textsize, zoom, etc. Or any other expanding type of menu. Well, upto today it was predictable - next menu subwindow would popup on the right side if there's space between it and display's rightmost edge (or on left if there's more space on the left). But now they all open at random sides, one menu opens on left from the mouse pointer, next opens on right - unpredictable, no logic. There's enough space on the right but menu pops up on the left, and it's like alternating. One menu from the tip opens next menu on right, next menu from top (2nd) opens its submenu on left, despite rhaving enough space on
the right. This you might say is cosmetic. But there're many things we get accustomed in using our tools, including computers, that when behave erratically are not making me happy...

Times Changed After DST

Mar 15, 2010

I have a job that runs at 3:10am every day and sends me an email with the
results. All the emails before the change to DST were timed with 3:10am.
when viewed on days b4 DST. Now after the change all of these emails are
timed at 4:10am. The job that ran on the 15th is timed at 3:10am.
All of my time related options appear to be correct.

Why did the time change on emails processed b4 DST???

This also happened to files and their 'Date Modified' as viewed in windows
explorer.

It now appears if I need to prove that I created a file or sent an email at
a particular time prior to DST, it will show up as happening an hour later
that when it really happened.

Long Log In Times

Apr 15, 2009

I have several Vista business 32bit laptops,of various makes and models, but all have the same problem. They are joined to a w2k3r2 domain, and whenever the users take them home and are not connected to the domain, they are unable to login. They can get to the welcome screen and put in their domain username and password but it will sit forever at the welcome screen with the circle spinning. I have clocked it up to an hour before shutting it down. As soon as they come in the next day and are plugged into our network they have no problems. However I have found that if I log in as the local administrator, let everything come up, I can log off and log back in with my cached domain user account. i did check to see if the user profiles were actually created ahead of time and they are. I am stumped and it is to the point where I am ready to downgrade to xp on these machines as work is being lost.

Spacebar Broken 3 Times

Nov 6, 2008

This is the 3rd spacebar I have ordered. I realize there is that metal thing and where it goes in the spacebar. I checked as before to see that the metal thing was secure in the plastic holders. It was (as I thought before), and I proceeded carefully to put the spacebar back in (with the metal thing towards the back forming an upside down U). When I did, once again, the metal piece dislodged itself from inside the keyboard and I put it back, however, it's not firmy in the grooves as it was. It works, but feels different than all my other keys and sometimes, and it is not working smoothly. So now I have 3 spacebars with the metal bar. Previously, I taped it so it would not move and it worked, just not perfectly.

Times New Roman Font Not Installed?

May 26, 2010

OS: Vista Home Premium 64-bit with Office 2003

When a client asked me to do a document using Times New Roman 12, I
discovered that Vista did not have that font (it didn't appear in my font
list nor was it available in Word), so I downloaded and installed it from a
file called Times32.exe. I had to manually extract the TTF files from the
archive because running the exe didn't install the font, even though the
installer said it had. When I used Vista's Add New Font and specified the
actual TTF files, Vista said they were already installed, and THEN Times
New Roman appeared in Vista's font list and in Word 2003.

Now I have Word 2003 telling me that I'm using Times New Roman, but it
doesn't look like Times New Roman on my screen nor on paper. It comes out
in both places looking like Tahoma, which is what I set up to be my default
font in Word.

At first I thought it might be a problem with the template (.dot) file I
was using for my client, so I created a blank new document using Normal.dot
and set the font to Times New Roman. It looked like Times New Roman on my
screen, but on paper it looked like Tahoma.

Do I need to find a special edition of Times New Roman specifically for
64-bit Vista? Why is what I see not what I get?

Blue Screen Of Death During "Expanding Files"

SECOND, we can successfully make a Remote Desktop connection to each of the computers involved. If we can successfully configure Remote Desktop, then why not Remote Assistance, which uses some of the same communications protocols?

THIRD, we can succesfully communicate with Windows Live Messenger. However, if we choose the remote assistance option with the same contact, we cannot connect. Ironically, the connection appears solid in that one contact successfully sends a request and the other accepts the request, but the connection always times out or fails. The dialog suggests that the other user may have closed the Remote Assistance session, but they have not..........

Slow Response Times When Opening/closing Apps And Programs

Apr 16, 2009

I need some assistance. I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop that runs Vista Home Edition. Whenver I boot up and try to open a program or application, it takes a really REALLY long time for it to open. For example, whenever I try to open Firefox or Internet Explorer or even my control panel, the window will open and will be blank. Then it will start to load but either take an enormous amount of time or, after I've become tired of waiting, I'll try to exit and it will say (Not Responding). Now eventually this goes away and the window does close, but like I said, it takes a ton of time trying to open and close these things up. If I do wait it out and I do get into my Internet Explorer or Mozilla, any links that I click or addresses that I type, it again, takes forever. I've run a deep system scan with my Anti-Virus software and came up with nothing. I did a system restore to a point where the problem was not happening and, again, nothing.

Slow Hard Drive Access Times, Gets Slower With Time!

Oct 11, 2008

this is my 3rd fresh clean install, using both vista x86 and x64, and all new hardware as well (new mobo, hd's, cpu, ram, etc):

symptom:
after a day of two of creating a user account, the hd access starts to become excruciatingly slow, and gets slower with time. when you use explorer and want to access the hard drives, the system takes 3-7 seconds to open the folder. when browsing pictures, it takes 3-6 seconds to switch to the next, etc.
creating a new user account solves the problem temporarily, until a day or two passes, and then the same thing starts to happen!

what i've tried so far:
- disabled indexing (windows search service)
- disabled hard drive indexing
- tried booting up as ide, as well as ahci
- created new install with raid0, and same issue.

system:
* e8400
* asus p5q-e with latest bios
* 2 x 320 wd 3200aaks sata drives, 1 x 250 wd 2500aaks sata drive
* asus sata dvdrw drive
* 4 gb crucial ballistix pc2-6400 (ddr2-800)

i've noticed this problem accelerates even more when using the "sleep" power mode. but even when disabling this, it still happens.

i've googled for over 2 weeks. i've done 3 fresh installs, i've replaced all the hw, and used 3 different copies of vista ultimate, with same results!

update: here is a video of the problem:
