Why is the Explorer window showing different filenames than the command line window? It's not so much of an issue, as I'm currently completing a scheduled backup of this drive using Nero Burning ROM, and will be formatting it soon.

I suppose there are third-party file managers. I will be looking for one if and when forced to upgrade from XP. Having tried the Windows 7 beta, Windows Explorer (like MSN Messenger) is beginning to look like an ornament. Apparently the same goes for Vista.
When Folder View is enabled, clicking on the folder name does nothing. In Windows XP, you could click on the folder name to expand the folder and automatically close the previous folder at the same time. That was very useful to me. And then there is all the additional junk above the "computer" folder, as if Microsoft thinks "computer" is a bad word to be hidden away. And then there is the fact that font sizes and types
can no longer be adjusted (without screwing up other programs on your system).
In folder options it has selected "Open each folder in the same window" but it never does. When I right-click and choose explore it opens in the same window as expected and it is the default action however if I double click a folder it always opens it in a new window.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am connecting an external hard drive (Acomdata 250G drive - pretty standard) via USB to my HP laptop running Vista. I am able to see the device listed under Disk Drives in the Device Manager. Drilling into Properties, I see that the device is running properly and, having re-loaded the device drivers, I have the most recent drivers. The issue: I am unable to see the device listed in Window Explorer, and thus I can't drill into the folders to get at the content.
I open up window update it opens up with a blank explorer window. it stays open till i force it to close with windows task manager. it forces it to close while restarting my entire explorer at the same time, and it closes out some programs sometimes when it does it too.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I open windows explorer menu it opens at a smaller window size then I'd like it to, so I resize it and close it but the next time that I open it from right clicking on the start menu and choosing explore, it opens at the same position and small size and isn't holding the window resizing that I did... What I've tried so far to make the window size "stick":
1. Use the Windows Explorer "ALT" key to bring up the File menu at the top of the explorer and choose "close" after resizing my Explorer window.
2. Made sure that the "Remember each folder's view settings" is checked. I've also unchecked it, chose apply, then recheck marked it and chose apply just in case it needed refreshing.
3. Used the "X" button at the top right of the window to close it after resizing it to the size that I want. And finally
4. Chose the upper left corner menu (the one with Restore, Minimize, Move, Close in it) and chosen Close...............
I've been experiencing some problems with the Windows Vista Home Premium Edition lately. It all started when my Internet Explorer or Microsoft Office Outlook kept on getting stuck, and I would get a note that Internet Explorer / Outlook is restarting. I've been experiencing this problem in particular only with these two.
Next - as of yesterday, I started getting all these weird messages when logging onto familiar websites, such as Google and even Microsoft, about how there's a problem with the websites' security certificate, and that it's expired, so I have to click on "Continue to this website" every single time, and the worst part is that I can't logon to my MSN Messenger! The Error Code is: 80048820, and the Extended Error Code is: 80048412. I've tried working with their Troubleshoot, but nothing works! It's strange, because my Skype is working perfectly fine.
I don't live at home, so MSN is a very important communication tool for me. The third problem is that all of the usual Windows Updates, which are normally downloaded automatically, are not downloaded anymore, and I get a message that the Updates could not be downloaded.
Is there a way to put a link to your desktop in the windows explorer favorites panel. Simple drag and drop doesn't seem to work, at least for me. I want to be able to access my desktop from that panel.

Using a cool free utility called AeroBar you can restore the window titlebar title and icon. To use the utility visit Outils (http://www.psscript.net/utils.htm) and download AeroBar.exe (http://www.psscript.net/AeroBar.exe).
Install is a snap. Just copy the utility to the Start Up folder of your start menu. If you want to also show the folder icons, just rename AeroBar.exe to AeroBarIco.exe ...
I got this problem after I installed Vista SP1. Inside Windows Explorer, when I double click a folder in the right pane, that folder is opened up as a new second window. No matter what I change in the settings window I cant get rid of this. If I instead right-click the folder and select "Browse", the folder contents is shown in the same window, but (as I said) double click the folder icon, a new window opens up. Seems to me that "double-clicking" a folder in the right pane triggers the "Open" action instead of "Browse" action.

I have heaps of RAM and disk-space, a fast Intel Core2 Duo chip, yet my computer is slower than my previous seven year old one (that was running XP). It takes about 3 seconds to display things like the Windows Explorer window or about 6 or 7 seconds to bring up Firefox or IE. and about 10 or 11 seconds the first time I open Outlook. That is not taking into account the
time it takes to download the web page or retieve my mail. I am using the default settings in Vista, are there features in Vista (I know it monitors everything) that could be slowing me down this much?
I went into HP migrating to mircosoft windows vista, to download microsoft 8, and now my address bar has "go.microsoft.com" and I can not do anything, can't get on line. How can I get out of this so I can get my internet explore back??

View 9 Replies View RelatedI need to change the display filename colors in Vista Windows Explorer similar to the MAC O/S Feature. This question does NOT deal with Encrypted Files or Compressed Files. I simply want to change the display names of the files to colors such as BLUE, GREY, etc., just like I can do on the MAC O/S for the past 5 years.
I do NOT want to use any third party software file managers. There must be a way to do it in Windows since APPLE has been doing it for 60 months now. I can't believe that Windows STILL Cannot perform this simple task! If you have a working solution using Windows Explorer please email me and let me know.
I wasn't quite sure if IE8 was the culprit, but it became apparent once I removed it. Internet Explorer 8 interferes with the functionality in Windows Explorer for Vista. Say for example: With IE8 installed, open up "Computer". Close it, then open it again. It should be instantaneous. But its not. A window will take over to 10 seconds to show its initial contents. Once its open though, its very fast because the instance is already running. But once it closes it will take another 10 seconds to open again. Internet Explorer 8 itself opens up very slowly even after the first opening. Can any Vista users verify this?
1. Install IE8
2. Go: Start > click Computer
3. Close that Window.
4. Repeat step 2.
Is it an instantaneous opening or does the window take more than 5 seconds to populate? Repeat those steps with opening Internet Explorer. Is it the same? If so, welcome to the club. Does Microsoft have any way to report this bug to developers?
I am running Office Home and Student 2007 and have just run a diagnostic which suggests that my installation is not up to date and that I go to the Microsoft Update site and download any available updates. When I do, I am asked to sign on with 'Microsoft Update'. The idea is, I think, to combine this Microsoft Update with my Windows Update and let Office updates come though along with updates for Vista, IE, etc. I have posted here before with issues concerning updates including a fiasco I had last November which involved Office updates and am wondering, since Office seems to be working well at the moment (I was bored so I did a diagnostic ) should I bother with this or just leave it? Does Office have security issues like IE and Vista?
View 4 Replies View RelatedAbout 40% of the time when I either choose HIBERNATE or the standard SHUT DOWN, the computer just keeps on running. Although it seems WINDOW has shut down, the "ON" light is still on and I can hear the fan running. When this happens I am left with no other option but to use the "emergency shut down" method - pressing the ON button for more than 4 seconds (ASUS laptop, using Vista Home Premium). Presumably this method would damage the computer in some ways in the long run?
I assume WINDOW is shut down because the next time when I turn on the computer it doesn't say the "WINDOW is not properly shut down". So can any kind souls please help me with this annoying problem of turning off the computer completely?
When I open windows explorer in either XP or Vista it opens the "My Document" folder as the default. However I only want "My Computer" to be expanded and everything else left unexpanded.

Also, same thing with Internet Explorer...I'm getting real sick of Vista's shoddiness..
Do any of you have experience with Microsoft Silverlight? If so, what do you think of it? I am using Vista Home Premium but have not installed Silverlight because I don't know anything about it.
