View 4 RepliesI ran a defragmenting session last night to clear up some space, and for some reason my C drive has dropped from 33.1 GB to 29.1. This has happened to me once before, but the other two recent defragments I've ran cleared up a ton of space. I honestly have no idea where the other three GBs have gone and I have not downloaded anything. I run a disk cleanup every night.

I cleared out my outbox, restarted windows mail, no luck. Turned Mcafee off for emails, restarted windows mail no luck.
I have 2 Dell XPS desktop PC's, both with duo 2.66 processors, 240 GB hard drives, and running Vista Home Premium. When going into Control Panel | Power Options, one of the PC's is showing all the sleep options for a battery powered laptop, and that's a LOT of options! I've attempted to set them all so that neither the PC nor any of its peripherals ever go into sleep mode, but periodically it still seems to go to sleep! I never have similar problems with the PC which Vista recognizes as being only a desktop. In order to fix this intermittent problem, first I have to let Vista know that the PC is not a laptop, but I haven't been able to find the parameter to do this.

To protect this data I will not connect it to the internet. From what I read, if I buy a computer running Windows Vista where Vista is pre-activated by the retailer, then Vista may still try periodically to re-validate on line. If it fails then the computer will be made unusable by nag messages or worse. In other words Vista, including Vista SP1, is not usable on a computer that does not connect to the internet. Shop assistants have told me otherwise. can you clarify because I can afford neither the time nor money involved in choosing the wrong operating system.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a desktop PC (running XP Pro) connected by wire to my router and it
has no problems. I also have a Dell Studio 1555 laptop (running Vista 64
Home Premium) connected to the router by wifi and it works fine most of the
time. Every once in a while, maybe every 3 or 4 days) the lapto shows that
it is disconnected from the network. When I try to reconnect it never
reconnects. The only solution I have found is to reboot and then connection
to the network always is fine.
I have a second router and tried it and have the exact same problem so it is
not the router. I have seen some items on the web which indicate that Vista
might be the problem but I have not seen any solutions.
Windows mail. Just sent a question but did not specify I was talking about Windows Mail. Where do the sent items go to when they apparantly are deleted/emptied from folder? Does not appear anti virus software causing the problem.
View 7 Replies View Relatedso at our place we use Comcast Internet, and we have a Belkin router and i have no idea what kind of modem box. But periodically the Modem icon blinks red on our Belkin router. We aren't sure if this is a problem with the Router or the Modem box itself. Any idea's?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI want to delete some unwanted cookies. The path I am taking is:-
C:usermynameAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowscookies
This is where I am hitting a wall. I know this is the correct path, but when I get to "Windows", I can't see the cookies file.
I have clicked the view hidden files tab, under folder options but still no luck.
I turned off UAC (because that was a suggested remedy I found online for an IE8 problem I've been having). This morning, I found that my cookies had been wiped out. I tried locating the folder where cookies are stored, and the cookies folder was gone. (I made sure that hidden files were visible, as were system files.) I then turned UAC back on, and the cookies folder re-appeared--with all of my cookies intact.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI just fired up on windows vista with IE 7 after many long years on win95 and 98.
I searched but did not see this exact problem. I was trying to login to my amazon account and it said I needed to enable cookies to get in. Over the course of the next 2 hours I was finally at:
Norton shut off.
Cookies enabled with all amazon sites they listed in as trusted sites.
Cookies cleared and new window opened.
I still got the same error.
Vista Basic 32bit sp2.
Is it impossible to unhide my Cookies folder?
I've tried several times using the cmd prompt (as administartor) to attempt to change the attibute of the folder but the folder remains hidden.
Is there any way to search the cookies folder in Vista (or Windows 7)? In Windows XP, I can search a specific folder and use part of the domain/site name to find all cookies from the site (eg. microsoft*). When I try this in Vista though, I never find anything. First of all, typing cookies on the start menu is a blind alley. So, I navigate to the cookies folder, type my search term in the search box and nothing is found. When I click on the Advanced Search link and check the box to include non-indexed, hidden, and system files, it still doesn't find anything. How are people finding anything in Vista?
View 9 Replies View RelatedWith all the previous versions of Windows, I could easily find the folder that stored the "cookies." Try as I may, I can't find it on Vista. I get the Windows Vista magazine and they printed the "route" you had to take, but it didn't work. Where is the cookie folder?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have Windows Vista Home Premium. How do I find the list of Cookies? I would like to pick some cookies out to delete them. I kow how to delete temperory cookies. I want the whole list of cookies.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen Vista Home Premium 64 bit boots, an error pops up from the system tray saying that C:Users(username)AppdataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsCookies is corrupt, and suggests to run chkdsk (which did not help). I've tried renaming the folder to see if Vista would recreate a new one, but the same error appears, with the new folder name. I tried to delete the folder, would not delete, gave no reason why. I tried booting into the hidden admin account to delete it, still would not delete. If I try to open the folder, it says the folder is corrupt, it cannot be opened.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have Windows Vista on my laptop and I use avast antivirus downloaded free from the internet. I also have my popup blocker on but keep getting these irritating popups almost every 2 minutes when using my internet explorer. I have to keep deleting them. I have tried to delete all my history and cookies but this does not work either. I notice that when I use another user profile on my computer it does not happen.

I delete the cookies and temp, but after a while (a day or so) another name appears. I dont undersdtand how.
View 5 Replies View RelatedThe other day gmail started complaining that my cache was full so I cleared it and increased the size to 1024MB. This did not stop the error so I looked a little deeper and the issue appears to be that IE7 is not caching anything at all - at least, the "Temporary Internet Files" folder is empty.
This leads me to consider a permissions problem, more so as I have moved the Temp Internet folder to another partition. I have set the permissions on the drive and parent folder to give "everyone" full control. This has not resolved the problem. Some files have appeared which I think have come from Windows Media Player but websites are not showing up, not even cookies. rss.xml files have also shown up after a reboot from sidebar news gadget (even though it's not running?!).....
More than half of the internet’s top websites use a little known capability of Adobe’s Flash plugin to track users and store information about them, but only four of them mention the so-called Flash Cookies in their privacy policies, UC Berkeley researchers reported Monday. Unlike traditional browser cookies, Flash cookies are relatively unknown to web users, and they are not controlled through the cookie privacy controls in a browser. That means even if a user thinks they have cleared their computer of tracking objects, they most likely have not. What’s even sneakier? You Deleted Your Cookies? Think Again.

I tried disabling Windows Defender and still nothing.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a desktop and a laptop running vista32hp here on the desk. They both are using COMCAST mcafee. the laptop is new. The laptop goes to all my websites and logs in automatically. I LIKE DAT!
The desktop no longer does that. Of late it goes to all my websites puts in the name and password and even the "remember me" is checked, but it does not do the actual log in. I HATE DAT!
Same no matter IE or FF. Cookies are turned on, I just spend an hour going through every Mcafee setting to compare... And I have fiddled with VISTA everywhere I can think of but just cant figure it out...
using this Windows Mail program to read messages in the MS bases. Where in the world is the internet files/cache/cookies stored now anyway? I've used the same method in viewing them for quite some time now, but using the same method after getting this new laptop with vista installed isn't showing me the files. I suppose that the files could be being handled differently now, but I'm not sure. So are these files STILL stored/accessed the same way?
