Cookies Vanished
Dec 4, 2009
I turned off UAC (because that was a suggested remedy I found online for an IE8 problem I've been having). This morning, I found that my cookies had been wiped out. I tried locating the folder where cookies are stored, and the cookies folder was gone. (I made sure that hidden files were visible, as were system files.) I then turned UAC back on, and the cookies folder re-appeared--with all of my cookies intact.

after three months somethong strange has happened in Windows Mail. The folders on the right hand side of the screen have vanished. (inbox, sent, deleted etc.) I can get them back by clicking on local folders and then double clicking each one in turn. However when I close down W.M. and start up again, I have to go through that process again. I tell you what, I had Outlook Express for years and it never gave me any trouble.

i must see a million of these threads but none of them are anything like what i have going on, i've tried all the fixes for the others to no avail. my story starts the same, my volume button in the task bar has the red x on it, how ever here is where it changes, registry: no audiosrv under local control set or any of the other control sets servies tap of task manager: no windows audio service there msconfig: no windows audio service there either its like the windows audio service vanished off my computer and on top of not having sound on my computer i, for some reason as well i can not do a system resotore, to try to see if that fixes te problem with the audio, all i get is an error.
this is what that says "system restore does not appear to be functioning correctly on this system. the Volume Shadow Copy service used by System Restore is not working. For more information view the event log.(0x81000202)" i've had no sound on my computer for at least 2 months, and from what i gather from reading everyone else's posts about it it has all happened around the same time, back in january on 2010, atleast 80-90% of the people who have put out this kind of error has said it started around that month.

how to turn it off, turn it on, download movies, music and pictures. I installed and formatted the 2nd Hard Drive myself and all was well for nearly going on 2yrs now. I shut the PC down like any normal day, later on my wife turned it on and tried to watch a movie and it said that "the foldar has been moved, renamed or deleted". I was out so she waited till I got home before she told me what had happened.
First thing I noticed was my background pic was gone, so I went to "my computer" to check the other (2nd Hard Drive) drive and BOOM!! It was gone. My main drive running vista was flawless, nothing wrong, nothing gone. But my 2nd drive which housed all my personal files (Music, Pictures, Documents.etc.) had vanished without a trace!! I googled around, was told Command prompt options of accessing my drive and "nothing". Wasnt in "disk management" where I first formatted it. Even the "Bios" couldnt locate it. Checked the drive and its humming, no clanking noises or anything, there wasnt no warning signs that anything was wrong before or after it was turned off. My computer aint even detecting a "Unknown device connected to this computer".

Ive scoured the internet to find the solution to my problem and ive ran out of solutions to my problem so i though id try the proffesional and worldly wise people here at vista forums so here goes... i recently updated my vista to service pack 2 x64 which installed perfectly fine with no hangs or any visible errors. after the machine restarted one of my dvd drives was missing but it recognised the other which worked fine in burning and playing my CD/DVDs.
so i restrted my pc once more just to see if that may re-jog the system and it did both of my dvd drives were both visible so i though great no problems there. went to bed shutdown my computer. the next day i started it up as normal but noticed on the screen where its says " press del to run bios " or something like screen appeared it stayed on for a lot longer than normal i normally blink and its gone but it stayed on the screen for approx 2mins then proceeded to start up as normal. checked my computer and this time they had both vanished. ran all my virus checkers even checked the screen where you can update the drivers but nothing gone......................

I want to delete some unwanted cookies. The path I am taking is:-
C:usermynameAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowscookies
This is where I am hitting a wall. I know this is the correct path, but when I get to "Windows", I can't see the cookies file.
I have clicked the view hidden files tab, under folder options but still no luck.

I just fired up on windows vista with IE 7 after many long years on win95 and 98.
I searched but did not see this exact problem. I was trying to login to my amazon account and it said I needed to enable cookies to get in. Over the course of the next 2 hours I was finally at:
Norton shut off.
Cookies enabled with all amazon sites they listed in as trusted sites.
Cookies cleared and new window opened.
I still got the same error.

Is there any way to search the cookies folder in Vista (or Windows 7)? In Windows XP, I can search a specific folder and use part of the domain/site name to find all cookies from the site (eg. microsoft*). When I try this in Vista though, I never find anything. First of all, typing cookies on the start menu is a blind alley. So, I navigate to the cookies folder, type my search term in the search box and nothing is found. When I click on the Advanced Search link and check the box to include non-indexed, hidden, and system files, it still doesn't find anything. How are people finding anything in Vista?

With all the previous versions of Windows, I could easily find the folder that stored the "cookies." Try as I may, I can't find it on Vista. I get the Windows Vista magazine and they printed the "route" you had to take, but it didn't work. Where is the cookie folder?

When Vista Home Premium 64 bit boots, an error pops up from the system tray saying that C:Users(username)AppdataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsCookies is corrupt, and suggests to run chkdsk (which did not help). I've tried renaming the folder to see if Vista would recreate a new one, but the same error appears, with the new folder name. I tried to delete the folder, would not delete, gave no reason why. I tried booting into the hidden admin account to delete it, still would not delete. If I try to open the folder, it says the folder is corrupt, it cannot be opened.

I have Windows Vista on my laptop and I use avast antivirus downloaded free from the internet. I also have my popup blocker on but keep getting these irritating popups almost every 2 minutes when using my internet explorer. I have to keep deleting them. I have tried to delete all my history and cookies but this does not work either. I notice that when I use another user profile on my computer it does not happen.

The other day gmail started complaining that my cache was full so I cleared it and increased the size to 1024MB. This did not stop the error so I looked a little deeper and the issue appears to be that IE7 is not caching anything at all - at least, the "Temporary Internet Files" folder is empty.
This leads me to consider a permissions problem, more so as I have moved the Temp Internet folder to another partition. I have set the permissions on the drive and parent folder to give "everyone" full control. This has not resolved the problem. Some files have appeared which I think have come from Windows Media Player but websites are not showing up, not even cookies. rss.xml files have also shown up after a reboot from sidebar news gadget (even though it's not running?!).....

More than half of the internet’s top websites use a little known capability of Adobe’s Flash plugin to track users and store information about them, but only four of them mention the so-called Flash Cookies in their privacy policies, UC Berkeley researchers reported Monday. Unlike traditional browser cookies, Flash cookies are relatively unknown to web users, and they are not controlled through the cookie privacy controls in a browser. That means even if a user thinks they have cleared their computer of tracking objects, they most likely have not. What’s even sneakier? You Deleted Your Cookies? Think Again.

Then I went to internet options and enabled them from there under the privacy tab, still no go. I tried disabling Windows Defender and still nothing.

I have a desktop and a laptop running vista32hp here on the desk. They both are using COMCAST mcafee. the laptop is new. The laptop goes to all my websites and logs in automatically. I LIKE DAT!
The desktop no longer does that. Of late it goes to all my websites puts in the name and password and even the "remember me" is checked, but it does not do the actual log in. I HATE DAT!
Same no matter IE or FF. Cookies are turned on, I just spend an hour going through every Mcafee setting to compare... And I have fiddled with VISTA everywhere I can think of but just cant figure it out...

using this Windows Mail program to read messages in the MS bases. Where in the world is the internet files/cache/cookies stored now anyway? I've used the same method in viewing them for quite some time now, but using the same method after getting this new laptop with vista installed isn't showing me the files. I suppose that the files could be being handled differently now, but I'm not sure. So are these files STILL stored/accessed the same way?

When I open the cookies folder, a message says "This folder is empty." The same goes for the Recent folder, Startup folder, and others. What gives? I am the only user of the computer, and have full administrative access (as far as I know). This problem began after I recently downloaded SP2 for Vista Home Premium.
