Download And Install Updates: Crashes

Mar 23, 2008

ever since I allowed my new computer (6 mos. old, and running Vista) to download and install the updates available Feb. 12, it has been a horror show. My computer is crashing at least once a day. I've tried going back to various previous restore points, but then, after the "restore process", up pops the message "System retore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed. Details: An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. ". In addition I can no longer use task bar tabs in Wordperfect, to, for example change margins. If I do, up on the screen flashes a message saying that I've committed an error, then terminates my word processing screen. Even if I bring up a letter I typed ayear ago and try to change anything, Vista interjects and closes the application.

System Restore Applet Fails To Open / Windows Updates Download But Fail To Install

Jul 29, 2009

A friend's Vista SP1 PC is failing to install Windows Updates and also some other updates such as those for Itunes. The symptom is that the updates get downloaded but the installation phase never finishes (he's left it for 12 hours!). In the case of the Windows Updates, there are several updates that try to install themselves as the PC is shutdown or even restarted, but the message "Installing 1 of 6" never advances: the only recourse is to switch the PC off.

As I was looking at the PC, I noticed one thing which may have a bearing on this and may even be the cause: the System Restore applet (windowssystem32 strui.exe) fails to run. It displays an initial User Account Control window but the "Restore System Files and Settings - choose a restore point" window never appears. No error message is displayed and there are no entries in any of the Event Log logs.

It occurred to me that if System Restore is buggered, this might prevent any updates working if the first thing they try to do is to create a restore point before installation begins. I can't find any reference to System Restore failing to open its initial Window - I've looked on support.microsoft.com and done a general Google search for "Vista System Restore fails". All the info seems to describe possible problems if you get slightly further and select a restore point which then fails to install properly.

Download Failed: Hung Up Windows Updates

Sep 10, 2008

When I try to perform a wndows update, my 9 month old HP notebook keeps getting hung up or says the download failed. It just says it's downloading the updates but continually says 0 KB total and 0% complete, that goes unchanged for HOURS! I eventually have to stop the download but have several important updates that are waiting to be installed. I dont know what to do. HP says I must remove all saved document and file data and reinstall the whole operating system.

Stops During Virus Scan, Cannot Download Windows Security Updates

Apr 9, 2009

Windows just stops during virus scan (Trend Micro)- eventually have to crash it Sometimes during logon, Windows just wanders away....either have to crash it or eventually it will reboot. Cannot boot in safe mode. It will get so far in loading dll files and then reboots it self after a period of inactivity. Cannot download latest Windows security updates.

The symptoms sound like the conflicker worm so I've tried the Sysclean tool recommended by Trend Micro with the latest pattern file. The system stops at some point just as it does with the virus scan and I have to crash it. If I log on to the latop and just surf or play games, no problem. I've also run sfc /scannow which reports no problems.

When i check the installed updates, they all show as failed.

Can't Install Updates

Nov 1, 2009

I noticed that several weeks ago Microsoft changed the old good Updater to the new buggy one. Sometimes I cannot install updates because I cannot select them! See the screenshots. Week ago my hard drive died, so I bought new and reinstalled everything. Fresh system with old Updater updated well, but then new updater installed, and bug returned. I cannot fix by myself because I have no source code of Updater (Microsoft does not publish source code of their products for unknown reason).

Repair Install: Windows Updates Won

May 23, 2009

I have Vista Home Premium 32-bit, on Dell Inspiron 6400. After a repair install, I now have two problems: - Although there are 75 Windows Updates in the list, I have tried several times over the last two days to install these. So far, only a few are marked "Successful". The great majority are marked "Failed". - There is no SP1 available in the list of updates.

Here is the history:

- My laptop was pre-loaded with Vista (no SP1). The OEM DVD was also SP0.
- I installed SP1 when it became available.
- A few days ago, I neede to do a repair install. So I uninstalled SP1, and did a repair install as specified in Brink's tutorial:
Repair Install For Vista
- As far as I know, the repair completed successfully. There were no "Files discarded by Windows Upgrade" (Maybe this is important!). I was not asked for my product key, or asked to activate Vista.
- Immediately after the repair, I launched Windows Update, and found the two problems noted above.

BTW: To the best of my knowledge, my laptop is working fine. The minor glitches that prompted the repair install have disappeare.

Why Install Updates, Office 2003 SP1?

Feb 6, 2009

A few minutes ago, a message popped up in the bottom right corner telling me to install Windows updates. I checked and found that Windows wants me to install between 386 and 423 MB of updates -- damn, that's about as much stuff as I have on my HD to start with. These are the updates listed:

-- Office 2003 SP1 -- but I don't run Office 2003 or any components thereof.

-- Microsoft .NET Framework SP1 and Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update -- What is this?

-- 2007 Office SP1 -- Maybe I could use this one as I am running Office 2007.

Now, it won't do that after the update to sp1? I just recently changed the time to auto. update at 1 pm, when my computer is turned on, so I am waiting to see if it will do that. I have checked the options and they are set right, I just think that after the install of sp1 my os now does not recognize when there is an update avail.

I also got a dialog box saying the program might not have installed properly or I could check it had installed properly. I clicked cancel but immediately another box appeAred as if it were trying to install. I hit cancel. My question, where does all the files/programing reside after I hit cancel. Can any of it be left over and be in an incomplete state and mess up anything else? I looked in programs to see if it could be uninstalled but it was not in that list.
