View 5 Replies View RelatedI notice a windows update icon for new updates available. As is my habit, instead of blithely installing, I checked to see what it was, and to my amazement, it is telling me I have an "Important Update" of Win XP SP3! Hmm I thought, maybe they had me on about what my OS was... so I checked... Windows Vista Home Premium SP1. Why would Windows update think I need XP SP3? I am wondering what will happen if I try to install it, but don't feel like rebuilding a machine today, I have better things to do with my time.
Can one of you vista gods please tell me why I get this? I have not mucked about with any settings on my machine as yet, it's straight out of the box, I have been far too busy to start playing with stuff like that. The only thing I can think of is that I installed Frontpage 2002 yesterday. Maybe that is fooling it into thinking it's an XP box? (and I was intending to install an old version of .NET (developer, not framework) too, not sure if that will work or not either)
I know this seems totally absurd but really, what tells files that the OS you are running is Vista Home Prem. or Ultimate? I know there entries in the HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersion in the registry and from what Carey Frisch [MVP] told me that sysinfo32 gets its info from some weird file in the %SystemRoot%System32WbemRepository folder that I can only open in a text format.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have recently encountered a situation where sent messages randomly are not put into the Sent Items folder of Windows Mail even though that option is checked in my Options settings. This problem never occurred until about two days ago. I have unchecked and rechecked this option and rebooted the PC, but no resolution.
As I said it occurs randomly, but more often than not. For example, I can send several test messages to the same receipient that correctly get put into the Sent Items folder, and then without changing any settings whatsoever one to the same receipient does not get placed there.
I have sent a file that is too large and keep getting an errir message that it is trying to sent it. How can I delete this file? I saw my grandson show me how to pull up a bunch of files that have not been sent but the hand is quicker than the eye and I don't know hot to get back there and how to delete the largest file.

View 4 Replies View RelatedIs there an easy way to select more than one item when trying to copy picture files to an email or website for sending over the internet? I remember I used to be able to select the first item and hold down the ctl or shift key select the end item and all the items inbetween would be highlighted for copy? Now, with windows vista, I have to click each one and sometimes it won't even let me do that, I have to do one at a time, depending on what I am doing.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a 4gb Kingston Flash Drive, and when i try to copy some file which are large in size such as anything greater than 400 mb (movie) i get an error: "Could Not Find This Item. This item is no longer located in (directory) Verify the Items locations and try again." However i have verified that the file (movie) is there and works, however i have gotten this error after several attempts, i have tried reformatting the flash drive. Also i have changed the security settings for the that folder and have checked the Full Control icon, however i still get the same error.
I would also like to mention is when i copy something such as some pictures which are less than 100mb they do transfer fine. Also when i transfer something from my external hard drive to the flash drive such a Movie (does not matter the size) it also transfers, so there is something wrong with the settings on the computer, however i am unsure what it is.
I have an unused item (the program has been uninstalled) in my Startup list.
I'm just wondering if it's possible to delete it from the list?
I recently have noticed a unusuall startup item on msconfig called: Microsoft Operating System. Its never been there before? What would be the effects if i unchecked it!!? Do u know if its a virus?? How can i send it for checking or anything like that,
View 9 Replies View RelatedI uninstalled a program through the Control Panel -> Programs and Features. This seemed to remove all signs of the application from the C:Program Files folder, but I was left with the application with sub folders on the Start Menu/All Programs. Since I didn't need this anymore, I tried right clicking on it and selected Delete - this resulted in a dialog 'You need to confirm this operation - Continue/Skip/Cancel' - I selected Continue - the dialog box disappears but nothing else happens - the menu entries remained.
Looking through various Vista newsgroups, I found a 'Take Ownership' registry thing - I installed this. Retrying the above and after 'Taking Ownership' of the start menu entry (entries), has exactly the same results - the references to the application still remain.
Next I tried search for the application name and this led me to the folder 'ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms' and I tried Delete there both without then with the Take Ownership - still the same dialog which when clicking Continue results in no action...........
I have removed Power DVD, I have also removed registry entries. But on the Auto Play option its still showing but its invaild is there anyway to remove it from the list?

The only solution I found to make it disappear is to reboot! I have attached a file to illustrate the problem.

View 9 Replies View RelatedIn Windows Vista Inside Out chapter 7 section "Restoring Files and Folders with Previous Versions" it states, "To see what previous versions are available for a file or folder, right-click the item in Windows Explorer and choose Restore Previous Versions." When I right-click a file or folder (with frequent changes over time) in Windows Explorer, I can't find anything labelled "Restore Previous Versions".
I have "Show hidden files and folders" checked and "Hide protected operating system files" unchecked in Folder Options, and I opened Windows Explorer using "Run as Administrator". How do I get to see the "Restore Previous Versions" menu item?

Okay so I wanted to make a DVD, I opened Windows DVD Maker, added the movies etc. But when i click Burn, a message pops up that says "The Disc in your DVD burner is not a recordable DVD. Please insert a recordable or rewriteable DVD." I attached a pic of the message, its stupid.bmp.
I am using Memorex DVD-R 4.7GB, so i know that the DVD can be used.
I tried burning with the Roxio programme that came installed already when i got my Laptop. It completed burning, but when I ejected the DVD, only a tiny strip was written. When I put the DVD in my dvd player it says Bad Disc and on the comp, it has a DVD picture with DVD-R underneath it, and it says DVD RW Drive (E: ) name of dvd. It tells me that i have 4.38GB of free space. i attached a pic of this because i dont think i explained it well, its disc.bmp
I dunno if this is important but my laptop is a Dell inspiron 1521. the system type is 32bit. I have Vista Home Premium
Under Device Manager, when I expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, PBDS DVD+-RW DS-8W1P ATA Device shows. I dunno if thats important either.

i can read dvd's however, i can't burn dvd's, i've search for solutions but i've found none, hopefully i'll get one here. I throught the problem would be solved with a system restore, starting from scratch, i have tried roxio, nero and windows vista itself to burn my dvd none with success.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am having the same problem as Scubiekim - except I DO use Windows Vista. When I put a CD-R in the drive, and try to burn pics onto it, it tells me I can't. Then every 5 minutes since I've tried, I get a balloon on the bottom of my screen saying "You have files waiting to be burned to disc. To view files, click this balloon". I then click the balloon, and nothing happens. I know it's not a problem with the CD, since I have other pictures on it, and it's not full. The pics I'm trying to work with are JPEG files, the same as the pics that are already on the disc.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI spent all day yesterday creating 2 movies in Windows Movie Maker that included photo's and video's. They were just perfect. I went into burn the DVD's, it said Windows DVD Maker will close and save your movie and start it in DVD Maker. It did, but then I realized I wasn't going to have time to burn them. When I closed it asked if I wanted to save them and I clicked yes.
When I went back into Windows Movie Maker I can open the saved movies but the video's have red X's on them in the storyboard and timeline views. If I click on the X, the option that applies is "browse for missing file". When I do that it takes me to the file on my computer where the video was prior to importing it into Movie Maker, which now says it has no such video. how can I get them back? I am so frustrated I scream, I've looked everywhere on my computer, in my recycle bin, etc. and they all say they don't have it.
I have been trying in vain to burn some TV show DVD's from uTorrent. After a lot of investigating I have come to the conclusion that Windows Media Player in Windows Vista Home Basic won't allow me to do this. I can PLAY purchased DVD but not burn.
