Boots To Windows98 Startup Selection Screen?

I used a friends computer to download and burn an image file to disk. In the course of doing so i had to download and install a img burner(i think it was called ISOBURN) which i then uninstalled. Sometime later that day the system was rebooted and now the system no longer boots normally, it boots to a WINDOWS98 startup selection.
If i try and select any of the options from this menu it returns that it "cannot find himem.sys...blahblah...please enter the path to command.com. I have already restored the registry to an earlier backup and rolled back the entire system 2 weeks using the OEM restore disk niether of which corrected the issue.

where it boots up to the loading screen is fine, slows down and stops, then it will bring me to blue screen and restart to the point where it has black screen telling me boot up was unsuccessful, and i can go into all 3 safe modes or boot normally, have tried all of them and non of them even boot

I have scheduled a chkdsk to take place the next time I restart my computer and when I restarted it, the problem started! After the Boot Screen finished booting nothing happens, the screen stays blank. I have left it for hours and still nothing happens. How can I solve this problem? I also wanted to mention that I have changed my boot screen using this tutorial. I didn't really have any problem after following that tutorial but I only wanted to mention that...

all day I've been trying to sort this out but to no avail. I've searched Google like crazy, and whilst I've found that others have had this issue there's been no real resolution. My system boots all the way up to the point of the loading bar, then it goes blue screen and restarts. I've found that it loads up in safe mode, and I can access all my drives (I've tried unplugging external devices), and I'm 99% certain that running a system restore would fix the issue. HOWEVER, safe mode revokes me of all rights to perform any system based tasks, so obviously it won't allow me to run system restore, regedit, pretty much anything. Here's what I've tried so far:
-Running system repair through a boot disk, it didn't find anything wrong
-I tried running system restore through the boot disk but apparently there weren't any restore files (which isn't true)

I have a Toshiba Satellite L300D -01Q (PSLC0C-01Q08C) that is running Vista Home Premium (SP unknown). The kernel completely loads to a black screen (active / backlit black) with only a moveable mouse pointer. None of the Recovery Options have helped and I can't do an Upgrade Install because I can't get to the GUI.
My priority and objective is to save this system and preserve files, programs and settings. I read Brink's How to Repair and Verify the Integrity of Vista System Files with System File Checker and I'd like to try sfc /scannow, however, I get the following:........

I guess you can't call it the Blue Screen of Death anymore as at least it collects data and reports the problem and boots back up (or does it?). I've had a total of 3 of these screens and am wondering how I can view what took place and possibly find out if there are any steps I can take to prevent the same thing from happening? Is anyone else experiencing this? I couldn't find anything in search function on several bases.

the PC boots up very slowly and I began to occasionally receive Blue Screen Errors. I think I have most up to date drivers for my hardware and applied most of the tutorials in the Speed Up the Performance of Vista Tutorial on my PC. However I have a RAID 0 setup and 3 partitions on my HDs and couldn not apply the #6. Enable Advanced Performance for the Hard Drive tutorial.
At system startup up Windows Explorer crashes sometimes and while playing Adobe Flash Movies from a CD I got an Blue Screen Error after I restarted the computer in Safe Mode with Net Support and now I am writing this post; the computer booted faster in safe mode without Kaspersky AV and ATI CCC.
After boot the windows reported that the cause of unexpected error was Intel Matrix Storage Manager(iaStor.sys)? I have used Uniblue Driver Scanner 2009 to scan the drivers and update them as necessary recently. How can I find out if there is any driver conflicts or cluster on the main drive? I have SP1 installed with 4GB physical RAM whose only 3070 MB can be used and have the latest drivers avaible for my GPU and the latest BIOS for my MOBO. I also experience lack of performance while displaying desktop, executing a program. Furthermore I want to know how can I access Boot logs manually.

after my computer boots it gets stuck on a black screen with a mouse cursor in the middle. I have been researching and reading for a solution but have not found one that works for me. I can't boot into safe mode or even safe mode with command prompt so i cant do any registry fixes which some people suggest. Iv also tried last known good configuration but that didnt work either. ctrl + alt + delete doesn't work either. iv tried doing a clean install and using the windows diagnostics and recovery toolset version 6. but they havnt worked either after the loading files bar the KSOD comes back again, it is like the computer cannot read the discs or it wont boot from them.

Once vista boots from the cd it goes to a windows is setting up files,then goes to a black screen where there is a lilttle green bar moving. Now right after that it goes to a blueish screen where there is just the mouse cursor on the screen and just stays there? This is on all new hardware. Also this is a sata hard drive,

I have just puchased my first Windows Vista computer - an HP laptop. I have purchased at leat five laptops since 2000 so I am familiar with setup and
comfortable with installations etc. I have three questions here.
1. My last computer had Windows XP and an 80 gb hard drive with 70 gb full - After copying the data only (55 GB) to my new 250 gb hard drive I have only 107 GB remaining of the 222 GB C drive partition. I have not yet added many programs. That tells me that Vista must be using 50-60 GB or more of the drive. Can that be correct?
2. My new computer takes 5-6 minutes to start up. After two minutes I get the welcome screen. Then the monitor goes black for a full two minutes before continuing the startup process. Is this normal for Vista?
3. Occasionally the monitor goes dark for a few seconds and a window pops up saying the display driver has failed but is back. Is this normal?
I certainly gained no speed with this new computer. There are many things I like about Vista. Since I have no previous experience with owning it I am trying to sort out if this computer is a lemon that should be returned or if I should just put up with the downside.

I have an Alienware M15x and am very cautious about installing anything on my computer. After some recent browser trouble I installed all the vista updates I could find. problem solved. This switched on the automatic updater so today when I logged on I received a message saying there was an update available so I decided I would get this last one before I switched it off. It downloaded installed and then shut down. Now I can't restart the computer at all. No safe modes work all I get is the blue screen with error message 0000000007E. I have tried a couple of recovery disks One wants to re-install windows and the other wants to restore the original factory setup. Please help I don't want to spend the next two weeks of my spare time re-installing everything. the things to destroy my computer I didn't think it would be microsofts own update

If in the event you have a Bluescreen first try this:~ A driver is a program that controls a device. Every device, whether it be a printer, disk drive, or keyboard, must have a driver program. Many drivers, such as the keyboard driver, come with the operating system. For other devices, you may need to load a new driver when you connect the device to your computer. So, if you added a new device or updated your computer you will very likely need to update your drivers...
Goto Start click on it
Goto Computer right click on it
Click on manage
Click continue
This opens a new window called 'computer management' Scroll down to device manager and click on it. On the screen is a list of all your 'DEVICES' start at the top and work your way down Right click on each device and click on properties. Up pops a little window that says this below:~ Click this bar to view the full image. Click on drivers Then click on update... Then do that for every driver and you should not have a Blue screen... Do this once a month!

I created batchfiles to change default OS and reboot. I set the bootloader delay to 0, but the menu still flashes for my eyes for about a sec. I would like to switch OS using the batch files (yes, they use bcdedit.exe) and I would not like to see the OS selection menu. Is there a way to tweak the bootmgr to not show the menu?:sarc:

I want to print out a list someone has sent me in an email. I select and click on the selection option but it always prints out the header information along with the selection. Is there a way to have it only print the selected area? I looked in options and can't seem to find any way to correct that issue.

My computer takes really long to boot up. probably about a minute or two trying to boot up, then when you get to the login screen and enter your password, the welcome screen is stuck for 20 seconds! After that, the computer is slowly loading...
What's the problem here? I reformatted the computer FIVE times, and it's still slow. I already ran hardware tests and everything passed. Also spoke to HP customer support. he took control of my computer... ran some tests etc... everything was good. If anyone has idea's as to what could be wrong, please do... I don't know what the hell I'm gonna do with this computer

with windows vista ultimate x64 and some other programs like anti virus pre installed. I started to have problems after a few days with the display driver nvlddmkm.sys and blue screen error IRQL not_less_than_or_equal_to. After trying many things like the new nvida drivers i gave up and used system restore to just after Vista was installed and before the drivers were installed. I was wondering if people could point me in the right direction so to avoid these apparently common problems in the future. Is there any updates or dowloads that should be obtained first. i was thinking the most recent nvida driver as the first thing to do.

New behavior. Never done before. I start up as usual....I get a blue screen. Nothing else. Nothing loads. Not a BSOD. A blue screen. Nice and pleasing. But, still....a blue screen. So I shut it down and restart. Takes longer than normal, screen stays black longer than normal but eventually gives me the Windows logo and WELCOME which means I'm in.

My windows vista crashed for no apparent reason and it will continuously direct me to a black screen with an option to continue normally or launch startup repair. Normal startup doesn't work, and the repair gives me the message "cannot repair this computer automatically". I send the info to microsoft and it gave me no options to fix it And although I have attempted the repair several times already, for some reason it says number if repair attempted:1

Note this is the results from 2 separate occations I have tried System restore to an older date but it did not work. I have tried safe mode, did a dskchk with /f but didn't do anything.

When I bring up Windows Explorer it no longer shows the tree view of folders in the left pane. Actually, there's no left pane at all. And the "folders" button on the toolbar is gone.
I've got Vista Ultimate 32bit on a quad-core 4G machine.
This just recently happened so I'm assuming something got clobbered.

I am having trouble signing into msnews.microsoft.com from the toolbar button and the menu selection under tools. If I try to send a message (including this one) I get "Not Responding" . I have to then close Windows Mail from the Task Manager, reopen Windows Mail and try to send again. Is there some reason the Windows Mail does this even though I have given it my Windows Live ID and password?

I've got this major bluescreen issue. Two days ago, I just restarted my pc for no particular reason, and when it was about to start it gives me this bluescreen. It starts up, I get the loading bar, but then bluescreen. I tried to chose any of the safe modes, but none of them work, just gives me the bluescreen again. To sum all this, I can?t start my computer due to a bluescreen issue, not even with safemodes. It gives me alot of text, but the screen dissappears after a few seconds so I can?t even read two lines. My girlfriend has recently (August 09) purchased a Dell Inspiron 15 laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium x64 edition pre-installed. Everything was absolutely fine for a week or so, but now whenever the computer starts up, it goes through the welcome screen etc in normal time, then the screen goes black with a mouse pointer (which one can move freely), for about 1 - 2 minutes. After these few minutes, the desktop loads perfectly fine. It would be okay, but it's a really new laptop and it's a little bit annoying. I've tried everything I can think of to sort it out, but I'm getting sick of it.
Here's a list of what I've tried: Had a play with services.msc (I'm not an idiot, I know what I'm doing). Had a play with the msconfig startup services to remove AVG watchdog. Tried to load 'last known good configuration'. Tried some bootup stuff. Installed some original Dell software which I had removed. There's still nothing and I'm starting to stress out. My girlfriend is at university now, and she's patient but it's not really fair on her to have to wait too long for her laptop to startup, because it's an amazing laptop!

Recently after being infected with a virus the laptop goes to a black screen after the vista loading bar. In safe mode it freezes when loading crcdisk.sys System restore was disabled, so I couldn't do that. Startup repair didn't work. If this works I'm gonna post as much

i wanted to shutdown my pc, so i press the red shutdown button in the start menu First odd thing happened: The computer went in some kind of "sleep mode" The screen was black, and my screen went in stand-by mode. The computer did not shut down. Whatever i did, the computer didnt go out of the sleep mode, smashed my keyboard, clicked my mouse, nothing happened. I was in a hurry so i had to shutdown my computer using the power button in my case. I cut off the power, and went away. The next morning, i plug the power back in and i try to start my computer again. The computer started the same way before i shut him down the day before: Fans are running, i dont hear my hard drive running, black screen, screen goes in stand-by mode after a few seconds. No boot menu, nothing immediately a black screeb Very odd, smashed keyboard again and again, pressed every button i could, but nothing happened. Even the leds on my keyboard werent lighted when the pc startsup, mouse does flicker.
Then i had the idea to maybe try and cut power again, and try again after that. So i did as i was thinking, cut the power, reconnected to electricity net, and start up again. This is when another odd thing happens: Everytime i cut power and try restart after reconnecting to power net, the pc goes to black screen fans running, shuts himself down again, and then immediately restarts 1 time. This happens EVERYTIME i cut power. After that he just stays in black screen, nothing happens. Does anyone know what is going on here? Yesterday he worked perfectly, but today he wont even start the bootup screen.

I am running Vista 64 and installed a program which apparently had a virus or I got it using IE8. I found an entry in the start up tab that was causing a problem. I went into the registry and deleted the item from the startup tab and I also disabled it in the startup tab. The startup tab still shows the item even though it is disabled and deleted from the registry. Why does it still show in MSCONFIG and how do I delete it from the start up entry

My windows xp that I have had for about 2 years suddenly started to shut down and restart on its own. Out of the blue, over and over. Boots up shuts down, Boots up shuts down. I use it for my business payroll and bill paying. When I do get it to stay on for a couple minutes I have to restart my active desk top. I have tried defrag and cleaning it up. Checked all my plugs and tried everything I can think of.

online backup installed an update on my extremely stable Vista Home Premium. It asked me to reboot and when I clicked reboot, the system froze up. Every time I boot, it will freeze within seconds of loading the desktop.
I would seriously love to get this fixed as I have reinstalled Vista 4x, the last being 18-months ago
How may I resolve OR troubleshoot this issue? I have done a restore point back 2 weeks, but thats as far as I can go without getting an error.
