Delay In Startup - Black Screen & Mouse Pointer
Sep 28, 2009
My girlfriend has recently (August 09) purchased a Dell Inspiron 15 laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium x64 edition pre-installed. Everything was absolutely fine for a week or so, but now whenever the computer starts up, it goes through the welcome screen etc in normal time, then the screen goes black with a mouse pointer (which one can move freely), for about 1 - 2 minutes. After these few minutes, the desktop loads perfectly fine. It would be okay, but it's a really new laptop and it's a little bit annoying. I've tried everything I can think of to sort it out, but I'm getting sick of it.
Here's a list of what I've tried: Had a play with services.msc (I'm not an idiot, I know what I'm doing). Had a play with the msconfig startup services to remove AVG watchdog. Tried to load 'last known good configuration'. Tried some bootup stuff. Installed some original Dell software which I had removed. There's still nothing and I'm starting to stress out. My girlfriend is at university now, and she's patient but it's not really fair on her to have to wait too long for her laptop to startup, because it's an amazing laptop!
Here are the specifications: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit Edition (Service Pack 1) Intel Pentium Dual Core CPU T4200 (2.0GHz) 4Gb DDR2 RAM ATi Mobility Radeon HD4570 (512mb Dedicated)

I really can't understand why my vista pc wakes up the monitor when it resumes from sleep due to a scheduled task in the task scheduler. I expect logically that when Vista resumes form sleep due to a scheduled task the monitor stays completely off, that is it remains in standby mode, instead it turns on showing a black screen and the mouse pointer and the worst thing is that, even if i set an idle time for the monitor to turn off, it doesn't go to into sleep, that is if the scheduled task is running for one hour the screen remains on with black screen and mouse pointer for one hour!!!!

I have just puchased my first Windows Vista computer - an HP laptop. I have purchased at leat five laptops since 2000 so I am familiar with setup and
comfortable with installations etc. I have three questions here.
1. My last computer had Windows XP and an 80 gb hard drive with 70 gb full - After copying the data only (55 GB) to my new 250 gb hard drive I have only 107 GB remaining of the 222 GB C drive partition. I have not yet added many programs. That tells me that Vista must be using 50-60 GB or more of the drive. Can that be correct?
2. My new computer takes 5-6 minutes to start up. After two minutes I get the welcome screen. Then the monitor goes black for a full two minutes before continuing the startup process. Is this normal for Vista?
3. Occasionally the monitor goes dark for a few seconds and a window pops up saying the display driver has failed but is back. Is this normal?
I certainly gained no speed with this new computer. There are many things I like about Vista. Since I have no previous experience with owning it I am trying to sort out if this computer is a lemon that should be returned or if I should just put up with the downside.

Hey my names Mike and at the moment i have an HP Slimline with Vista Home Premium. (Vista Home Premium was already installed when i bought it) So heres my problem- I bought my comuter a couple months ago and its been working great. But a couple days ago whe i was trying to set up a webcam with software, i was told to restart my computer. fine. Though afterwards when it was booting up and after the Windows logo apeared it said Welcome and then went black with only my mouse cursor.
Im not to tech savey so i'm not to sure what im doing. Ctrl+Alt+Delete does work. Safe Mode Works also (Not really sure what to do in Safe mode though) Also im not sure if it's the new software or a malfunction in my computer but I've tried several times to restart it with no success. I've also tried a system restore with no success either.

My windows vista crashed for no apparent reason and it will continuously direct me to a black screen with an option to continue normally or launch startup repair. Normal startup doesn't work, and the repair gives me the message "cannot repair this computer automatically". I send the info to microsoft and it gave me no options to fix it And although I have attempted the repair several times already, for some reason it says number if repair attempted:1
Root cause found: Startup Repair has tried several times but can still not determine the cause of the problem."
Root cause found: Unknown bugcheck: Bugcheck 7f. Parameters = 0x0 0x0 0x0 0x0.
Repair action: system restore Result completed successfully
Note this is the results from 2 separate occations I have tried System restore to an older date but it did not work. I have tried safe mode, did a dskchk with /f but didn't do anything.

Although this isn't a major issue, I was wondering if there is an fix here. At startup, once past the BIOS screen and Windows Vista screen, it goes black with just the cursor showing for maybe 75-90 seconds. Then the desktop will appear. I am using Vista Ultimate 32 bit on a Dell D620.

The first issue is that Vista hangs for about 1 minute just after it's prepared the desktop before it allowing avast! and msn to run in the system tray. Just after msn / avast are allowed to run the wireless network icon appears in the system tray. I should just clarify, when I say "hangs" the OS doesn't freeze, there's just a minute or so delay before avast and msn are allowed to run - very annoying! I've disabled the onboard wired lan because I thought that it was perhaps trying to obtain an ip by dhcp, but that made no difference. The other issue is that my Intel Pentium M 1.7Ghz processor seems to be stuck at 100% Maximum Frequency and does't scale back to 600Mhz like it did under XP.

I have a VBS startup script that works fine with Win 2000, XP, 2003 but will not function properly on Vista. The startup script's purpose is to load the registry hive of the Default User (Default for Vista) profile, make a change and unload the hive. If I manually run the VBS script on Vista it works fine, however when I run it as a startup script it fails. Specifically the startup script is failing at loading the default user profile hive.
Does anyone know what has changed in Windows Vista that prevents the loading of a registry hive durring a startup script? I have tried putting in a delay, however this didn't correct the issue. I am using reg.exe to load the hive.

2. I can not delete anything in the C/ directorory Program Files.

I have a Gateway Desktop model GM563E with a Vista Home Premium operating system. After installing Vista update 938371 released 4/8/08, my mouse pointer disappeared (while keyboard functions still worked). Changing mouse settings and installing a new mouse did not remedy the problem. I needed to do a system restore and remove the Vista update to make the pointer work again. Has anyone else had this problem?

I have Windows Vista Home Edition on my new laptop (Dell Inspirion e1530). My pointer disapears anytime i move it over an area that allows you to type. For example, it will not work at all in Microsoft Word. It appears over the toolbars and i can click on file, edit, etc, however when i want to edit an existing document or begin a new one the pointer will not show up on the page. It has basically been a trial and error click process until I find the place i want the cursor.

Can anyone help with a missing mouse pointer? It's on a Gateway laptop (notebook) and the default finger tablet shows no mousepointer and if I plug a USB mouse in, there is still nothing. Has something become corrupted? I have a dual boot on this laptop and can boot up win 2000 successfully with the mouse pointer working perfectly so at least I know that it is not a hardware issue. Can it be fixed without doing something drastic like a re-install? I tried starting with last known good configuration

booted up my PC, typed in user name and password. Went on to Mozilla Firefox, about 10 or 15 minutes.... my laptop freezes. My mouse pointer cannot move, neither the programs. The only thing I could do, was the Windows Flip 3D (Win+Tab). My indicators (Power, Battery and Hard Drive) looked fine. So I shut down my PC.
I booted the PC, somehow... it failed. It had "Microsoft Corporation" and the loading bar, it was like that forever. I shut down my PC again and decided to go to Startup Repair and System Restore. It fixed the booting error, but my computer still freezes. This problem always goes on forever and ever. The worse place is to go is logging in as Administrator. But it does the same thing, except it also had blue screen of death. (KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR). I booted in Safe Mode, and it does the same thing. I did chkdsk /f , startup repair and system restore. I haven't thought about restoring my PC to factory settings.

The accuracy of the pointer is out by half an inch. When I go into the control panel and select the mouse there is not option to calibrate the mouse. how to get my mouse pointer to be more accurate

Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 with 4gb memory I have as my cursor 3D Bronze pointer. I went inside Control Panel/Mouse, chose Pointer Tab, Work in background and changed the icon to icon of drum beating. In the preview window, I can see the drum beating. When I press OK and exit. When I open some application, the drum icon would appear but without animation as though it is frozen. Does anyone know what might be the problem on why there is no animation?

I am having a problem with my mouse pointer. When I move the pointer/arrow over an "X" I have noticed that if I try to click on the "X" (or whatever the button may be for that matter) I have to actually move the pointer so that it is above what I want to select. The odd thing is though, that this is not always the case. Sometimes the poiner works just fine. I have noticed that this does not happen on just certain applications; for the most part it just randomly happens. It does consistently happen howver with the items shown in the tray at the lower right portion of my screen.

Back in the days I had time to be a Windows MVP, there were a lot of
questions I knew how to answer, but this wasn't one of them.
We have a Vista machine running Vista Ultimate. It is a Toshiba Tecra.
Within a few minutes of booting up, even in safe mode, the mouse pointer
drifts to one side, usually the right, and stays there. If you leave the
machine alone for a while, the issue goes away, but the moment a user starts
doing anything, the mouse becomes unusable in this way. I have tried exiting
all applications, and meticulously exiting every service whose function I
know is not a core Windows function, without avail. Windows Defender has not
found an issue.

I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 530 running under Vista Home Premium. It was supplied without a monitor. I have tried it with two monitors, a small LG flat screen and a 20.5" widescreen Samsung. In both cases the mouse pointer is about 2 mm (1/8th inch) out of true so that when for example selecting files from a list in Windows Explorer it is easy to select the one below that intended. How do I synchronies the mouse pointer with the hotspots? An obvious answer is to contact Dell, but, if it comes to that, if there is some simple registry tweak in Vista, then hopefully I can fix it with kind guidance from this newsgroup.

i wanted to shutdown my pc, so i press the red shutdown button in the start menu First odd thing happened: The computer went in some kind of "sleep mode" The screen was black, and my screen went in stand-by mode. The computer did not shut down. Whatever i did, the computer didnt go out of the sleep mode, smashed my keyboard, clicked my mouse, nothing happened. I was in a hurry so i had to shutdown my computer using the power button in my case. I cut off the power, and went away. The next morning, i plug the power back in and i try to start my computer again. The computer started the same way before i shut him down the day before: Fans are running, i dont hear my hard drive running, black screen, screen goes in stand-by mode after a few seconds. No boot menu, nothing immediately a black screeb Very odd, smashed keyboard again and again, pressed every button i could, but nothing happened. Even the leds on my keyboard werent lighted when the pc startsup, mouse does flicker.
Then i had the idea to maybe try and cut power again, and try again after that. So i did as i was thinking, cut the power, reconnected to electricity net, and start up again. This is when another odd thing happens: Everytime i cut power and try restart after reconnecting to power net, the pc goes to black screen fans running, shuts himself down again, and then immediately restarts 1 time. This happens EVERYTIME i cut power. After that he just stays in black screen, nothing happens. Does anyone know what is going on here? Yesterday he worked perfectly, but today he wont even start the bootup screen.

I just loaded Vista Ultimate x64 on a new system (e7200, 4GB Ram, Gigabyte mobo, etc. - a fast system). It boots fine until after I enter my login password and the word "Welcome" appears. This lasts for exactly 30 seconds until the screen goes briefly black and the desktop (quickly) loads. This seems like a really long delay on the welcome screen. Is this normal Vista behavior?
