Bootrec /rebuildbcd, Successfully Scanned Windows Installations

Sep 11, 2009

I have both a SATA drive and IDE drive. Vista is installed on my SATA drive. But my SATA drive is labeled Drive E, and my IDE drive is Drive C. Because of this I can not boot from my SATA drive "E". When I do a bootrec /rebuildbcd I get this msg. Successfully scanned Windows installations. Total identified Windows installations: 0. I have tried all the commands associated with Bootrec. Right now I must keep installations disc installed in my DVD drive to boot.

Bootrec Failed

Mar 23, 2008

I have a dual boot setup where I boot from the first HD and start XP/Vista. Vista is installed on a separate disk. I don't use XP at all and want to remove that disk, but then I need to make the Vista disk bootable. The Vista install is on a raid volume. I googled a little bit and found some information about bootrec and tried to boot from the DVD and tried /fixboot, but nothing happens. When I load the recovery console it doesn't display any Vista installations, so I wasn't very surprised that bootrec failed. I then proceeded to load the driver for the raid controller, but still no installations are displayed... Is there a simple way to make a disk bootable for Vista - on a raid volume...?

Bootrec.exe Now Allows Boot Into Vista

May 13, 2010

In a fit of stupidity I installed Ubuntu on my laptop, and went with dual boot, but it just would not see my WiFi router regardless of what I tried, so got rid of it following some online advice, using the bootrec.exe/fixmbr command, which now allows me to boot straight into Vista. However, if you look at the pic attached you will see I have a huge lump of free space 41.64gb free space which I can't use for anything. Is there a way for me to re-combine the 41.64gb free space with the C: drive again, the options allowed are displayed in the pic, also there is another slice of the drive 5.37gb which I'd also like to be able to use.

I'm not sure I've made my self clear on what I'd like to acheive, which is to bring both of theses slices back in to the C: drive. On right clicking the 5.37gb drive the only option is Help, as neither of theses slices has a drive letter I don't see how I can do anything to them. The only options I have for the 41.64gb free space seems to be to make a simple volume (not sure what that actually means) or delete the partition. I'd like to get back to how it was before I installed Ubuntu, IE a C: & S: with no more partitions, preferably without having to re-install Vista. for clarity I've cut and pasted the options for each slice of the drive below the relevant slice

Resizing Scanned Photos

My old computer has Windows XP. My new one has Windows Vista Home Premium x32.

When I scanned photos with XP on my HP1200 printer/scanner in Preview I could enlarge the photos. With Vista can't seem do that. Am I missing something here? I can scan in Paint or in Windows Photo Gallery, but in neither can I enlarge the photo.

Scanned And Defragmented, Computer Keeps Thrashing?

Mar 23, 2008

I don't know what's wrong. I've scanned and defragmented my system (more than once,) I've deleted some files (including some cookies, temporary internet files and my history) and I've rebooted a few times. Yet, the system still keeps thrashing. Could it be an unknown virus? Should I downgrade to Windows XP? BTW, I've had this laptop for 10 months.

Backup Did Not Complete Successfully.

Jan 12, 2009

Backup did not complete successfully. I am running Business Vista 32bit on a HP Compaq desktop with 3 GB of RAM and 100GB hard disk drive. Over the past two months I have had my document folder backed up to a W2K Server folder-automatically. Last week, I got the following error message: "The backup did not complete successfully. A shadow copy could not be created for the following reasons: Incompatible version of the serializing package (0x81070724)."

I went to another Business Vista computer on the same network, and backed up to the same Server folder (Userbackups) without any problems. I am not interested in Acronis True Image 2009. I would like to continue using the automatic backup feature that came with Vista.

System Restore Not Completing Successfully

Mar 11, 2010

I went to the System Restore and chose "restore system files and settings from a restore point".

Computer brought up the most recent restore date, which was earlier this morning.

Told it to restore.

After a while, it brought up the following message:

System Restore did not complete successfully

Details: An unspecified error occurred during system restore

You might want to restore again with a different restore point

I tried the date before this one. Same message occurred. NOTE: This has not always been the case. My computer has been able to restore in the past.

Did something corrupt the system? What do you think the problem is? And more importantly . . . how do I fix it. Can't leave the computer unable to restore.

Shutdown Sequence Does Not Complete Successfully

Apr 16, 2008

if the Shutdown sequence does not complete successfully, and the computer has to be manually powered off, Vista is not able to recover. It will remain on the start up screen with sliding green bars forever. I have tried the following:

- boot to safe mode: safe mode works, but normal start-up after that still hangs
- system restore: system restore works, but even after restoring normal start-up hangs
- system repair with help of installation DVD: is not able to repair, reports root cause not determined

The only option has been to reinstall Vista (from safe mode, new install) and then copy documents etc. from windows.old directory. I have now done this 3 times, as after the first two installations there was a freeze in the shutdown and I had to manually power off (there probably was a problem with installing some of the device drivers after the actual Vista installation, but I cannot point a single cause, because it happened at different times during different installations)..........

All Application Installations In 64bit Error

Mar 18, 2009

I am having repeated problems with a new Toshiba Laptop that, regrettably, has Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit. The computer is so new that I am still in the process of installing all of my applications and tools. I finished installing Office 2007 and then came the problems. NOTHING would install. For example, I triied to install the 64-bit version of iTunes and it started, asked if I wanted to RUN it, and when I selected RUN, nothing happened. It ran for a few moments and then just stopped. I tried to run the 32 bit version and it went all the way to the point of telling me there was a 64-bit version and was I sure I wanted to install the 32 bit version. In other words, Vista was willing to install the 32 bit version but not the 64 bit. I then tried to install Snagit, and while installing Snagit, I got the

following error:

"*Internal Error 2908. {32C6FEA0-576F-4661-9304-82BB4BFF390C}*" and then

"*Internal Error 2908. {49190E7C-167E-4702-B628-4D69B80A8C69}*" Plus another 50 or 60 keys with the same error.

THEN, "*Error 1406. Could not write value RegOwner to key Products]81D19995889ABA541BFBA5EDE646DCF3InstallProperties*"

I tried to hit _Ignore__and then _Retry_, but they did not work. Have had to _ABORT_. After some research I tried to reinstall the Installer by renaming some old components and then reinstalling. I then tried to reinstall Windows Installer for Vista 64 v4.5, file name "*Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x64.msu*". Despite the fact that this is supposed to be the right one for 64bit Vista, the RESULT: "The update does not apply to your system." I then followed the process to reset registry permissions. The first attempt used the subinacl, which I realize is for the 32-bit keys, but I found few options.

Memory Maxed Out During Software Installations

Mar 23, 2008

I have a problem on my x64 Vista that I've had ever since I started using it. I was never able to find a solution for it even after googling the problem for months. First I will list my specs as I suspect that the problem might be hardware related. the scenario is, whenever I install anything big (such as a recent game or a software suite), my available memory slowly decreases until I have about 20 MB left (96-98% utilization) out of my 4GB!!!. This results in my computer freezing up during any install that is larger than a 1 CD install. And when it does, I can't do anything on the computer...it took me 5 or so minutes to force close firefox with 3 tabs open just now because I was installing a game.

Needless to say it has been nothing buy annoying. Sure it's not critical, but it would be nice if I could get rid of this problem. I never had this problem on 32-bit Vista (with 2GB or RAM). Just a quick note that this problem also occurred when I installed XP x64 (that's why I think it could be incompatible hardware of some sort). I have also reverted to factory clock settings on CPU and RAM, but no luck, plus my OC is stable...my computer never crashes, not even when the memory was maxed out.

Hard Drive Format Did Not Complete Successfully

Feb 17, 2009

Bought a 750 gig Hard Drive in September and haven?t had problem with it until now. I?m about to install a fresh copy of window vista and have backed up everything that?s on the 750gig to an external HDD (no problems there), but when I?ve come to format the 750 gig Hard Drive I?ve notched that it stayed on 99% for a while and in computer management, its showing up as raw, even after the format, I?ve now deleted the partition, re-created it and get the message ?the format did not complete successfully? and then get ? you need to format disk drive D: before you can use it? with the option to format which I choose but even if I try to format it, I get the message ?windows was unable to complete the format?.

Even though I?ve not had any previous problems with the drive, as its worked fine, when I installed the drive when I was using Windows XP, I used partition magic to try and format the drive it and even that didn?t work. So am I right in thinking that there?s a problem with this drive or should I try the Windows Vista Dvd and see if formats in that before I RMA it? Btw the drive in questions is a Western Digital 750GB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 16MB Cache - OEM Green Power

Black Screen Of Death: (no Updates Or Installations)

Sep 23, 2009

So I've read so many pages all around the web about this problem, with no explainable reason (no updates or installations) I booted up yesterday to find that after login my desktop was black with only my cursor visible. I wait some 5 or 6 minutes and the desktop appears but explorer.exe is slower than slow and takes the same amount of time to action any click. Painstakingly, I went through msconfig and disabled everything, one by one I re-enabled each item, rebooted and tested the results. Rinse and repeat for every process. All worked fine until I came across 'Shell Hardware Detect'. If this process is enabled then I get the error described above.

So a cursory search around the web doesn't seem to yield many resolutions to this problem. I only seem to be able to find similar issues on Win XP SP2 - however i'm running Vista Premium X64 SP2. I'm angling towards SP2 as ever since I installed it I've noticed a few bugs. Typically, searching on Microsoft's support website the term Shell Hardware Detection yields nothing whatsoever. Anyone have any ideas how I can get this process functioning properly again?

Access Is Denied. (0x80070005) "The Backup Did Not Complete Successfully"

This failure is soon followed by my ZoneAlarm anti-virus software picking up on "Exploit.Java.ByteVerify" I delete this "virus" as per instructions. I have manually intiated a backup which also fails. I have used restore points dated before this problem began, to no avail. I have Googled looking for solutions, and have found similar, but not identical problems. And I am not technically informed enough to try a solution if the problem does not exactly match mine.

"Cannot Run Two Device Installations"

Mar 23, 2008

I cannot add any new hardware on Vista Home Premium. Whenever I connect a new hardware (USB memory stick, DV camera, anything basically) Vista won't run the Add Hardware wizard and if I manually select "Add Hardware" from Control Panel I get a pop-up window saying "Cannot run two device installations" and it says another device installation is underway. However, I have checked all possibilities (hidden and non-hidden) from Device Central in Normal and Safe Mode and removed all the devices that were not working properly (a Bluetooth dongle that was apparently not vista compatible) and the problem still exists. Googling for this I found a few postings that were for XP, and relating to deleting a registry key, but those reg keys are not in Vista.

Windows Update Kills Windows Mail On Windows 7

May 12, 2010

If you have installed Windows Mail on a Windows 7 computer, yesterday's update contains a KB978542 patch which changes msoe.dll so it won't run on Windows 7. I had warned about these types of issues when Win7 was first released. Microsoft claims it was done for security=20 reasons, see To get it working again, replace the new non-working copy of msoe.dll in Windows 7 with a copy of the new patched version of msoe.dll from a Vista machine.=20

Note: I ran into permissions issues when trying to delete the = non-working msoe.dll, so rather than fighting that, I renamed the Win7 Windows Mail directory to "Windows Mail-X", then I copied and pasted the Windows Mail directory from the Vista machine. I suspect that Windows Mail will = become less and less compatible with Win7 as time goes along.=20

The Recommended Updates Was KB940157: Windows Search 4.0 For Windows Vista For X64-systems (11,8MB).

Aug 19, 2008

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit edition Dutch Version, updated with SP1 and all the patches/updates until today. However, I have encountered two problems lately, that might be related. During one of the last Windows update sessions, one of the recommended updates was KB940157: Windows Search 4.0 for Windows Vista for x64-systems (11,8MB).

The update downloaded succesfully, created a restore point, but then during installation of Search 4.0, windows update stops and announces an update fail error:

Failed: 1 update
Errorcode: 800F0900

I've been googling this particular error code in combination with KB940157, but it doesn't bring up any entries. Then later on, I discovered that when I go into the Windows Components window (via Control Panel, Add/remove software), the entire windows stays blank (first it says "Wait a few moments..."). This only lasts a few seconds then shows a complete empty window.

Unable To Open Attachments In Windows Mail: Windows Cannot Find File Name

Jul 29, 2009

There are discussions on this general subject but no aparent resolution. About two months ago I was sometimes prevented from opening photo attachments on some emails received from the same party and sometimes could open them. By this I mean, I would click on the paperclip where a list of photos would appear and I'd click on on photo and I'd get a message saying: "Windows cannot find file name (photo captions used by sender).jpg. Make sure your typed the name correctly and then try again." Well, of course I didn't type the file name; the sender did. I could click on the save attachments, and once saved to a folder I could open them from the folder. I forwarded the mail to others, and they report no problems in viewing the photos. I can also view the photos in the email itself, but it would be necessary to scan up and down and from left to right to view the whold photo and the caption would not appear.
