Memory Maxed Out During Software Installations

Mar 23, 2008

I have a problem on my x64 Vista that I've had ever since I started using it. I was never able to find a solution for it even after googling the problem for months. First I will list my specs as I suspect that the problem might be hardware related. the scenario is, whenever I install anything big (such as a recent game or a software suite), my available memory slowly decreases until I have about 20 MB left (96-98% utilization) out of my 4GB!!!. This results in my computer freezing up during any install that is larger than a 1 CD install. And when it does, I can't do anything on the computer...it took me 5 or so minutes to force close firefox with 3 tabs open just now because I was installing a game.

Needless to say it has been nothing buy annoying. Sure it's not critical, but it would be nice if I could get rid of this problem. I never had this problem on 32-bit Vista (with 2GB or RAM). Just a quick note that this problem also occurred when I installed XP x64 (that's why I think it could be incompatible hardware of some sort). I have also reverted to factory clock settings on CPU and RAM, but no luck, plus my OC is stable...my computer never crashes, not even when the memory was maxed out.

All Application Installations In 64bit Error

Mar 18, 2009

I am having repeated problems with a new Toshiba Laptop that, regrettably, has Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit. The computer is so new that I am still in the process of installing all of my applications and tools. I finished installing Office 2007 and then came the problems. NOTHING would install. For example, I triied to install the 64-bit version of iTunes and it started, asked if I wanted to RUN it, and when I selected RUN, nothing happened. It ran for a few moments and then just stopped. I tried to run the 32 bit version and it went all the way to the point of telling me there was a 64-bit version and was I sure I wanted to install the 32 bit version. In other words, Vista was willing to install the 32 bit version but not the 64 bit. I then tried to install Snagit, and while installing Snagit, I got the

following error:

"*Internal Error 2908. {32C6FEA0-576F-4661-9304-82BB4BFF390C}*" and then

"*Internal Error 2908. {49190E7C-167E-4702-B628-4D69B80A8C69}*" Plus another 50 or 60 keys with the same error.

THEN, "*Error 1406. Could not write value RegOwner to key Products]81D19995889ABA541BFBA5EDE646DCF3InstallProperties*"

I tried to hit _Ignore__and then _Retry_, but they did not work. Have had to _ABORT_. After some research I tried to reinstall the Installer by renaming some old components and then reinstalling. I then tried to reinstall Windows Installer for Vista 64 v4.5, file name "*Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x64.msu*". Despite the fact that this is supposed to be the right one for 64bit Vista, the RESULT: "The update does not apply to your system." I then followed the process to reset registry permissions. The first attempt used the subinacl, which I realize is for the 32-bit keys, but I found few options.

Black Screen Of Death: (no Updates Or Installations)

Sep 23, 2009

So I've read so many pages all around the web about this problem, with no explainable reason (no updates or installations) I booted up yesterday to find that after login my desktop was black with only my cursor visible. I wait some 5 or 6 minutes and the desktop appears but explorer.exe is slower than slow and takes the same amount of time to action any click. Painstakingly, I went through msconfig and disabled everything, one by one I re-enabled each item, rebooted and tested the results. Rinse and repeat for every process. All worked fine until I came across 'Shell Hardware Detect'. If this process is enabled then I get the error described above.

So a cursory search around the web doesn't seem to yield many resolutions to this problem. I only seem to be able to find similar issues on Win XP SP2 - however i'm running Vista Premium X64 SP2. I'm angling towards SP2 as ever since I installed it I've noticed a few bugs. Typically, searching on Microsoft's support website the term Shell Hardware Detection yields nothing whatsoever. Anyone have any ideas how I can get this process functioning properly again?

Exploring, Memory DiagnosticsIf Vista Detects A Memory

Feb 23, 2007

Memory DiagnosticsIf Vista detects a memory problem in your system such as a faulty RAM module, it will display a notification asking if you want Vista to try to diagnose the problem. Then again you may also recieve the sudden BSOD with the error MEMORY MANAGMENT at the top. Total Memory Available 3.3GB With 4GB Physical Memory Under Windows 7 64 Bit

When I upgraded to windows 7, I chosed 64 bit, but the available memory shown in the system is still 3.3 GB. Why is this and is there a way to make the full 4GB available? It's possible that my video card is using RAM instead of its own RAM. If I install a video card with its own RAM, will the full 4GB be available?

Out Of Memory And Needed To Free Up Memory?

Aug 23, 2008

I am fairly new to the forums, and VERY new to Vista x64. The machine is new, and I was trying out some apps and games, I was in Secondlife when I got an error messege saying I was out of memory and needed to free up memory. I shut down the app and restarted it. Runs but I watched Task manager and saw my free memory down to almost nothing after an hour or so. The cached seems very high.

I did alittle research and decided to set a second page file on my 1TB hard drive, (OS is on the other HHD's )( regulated by system for size ) I'm not really sure whats going on. Example of just task manager and this page openis attached. Again, any help would be great in getting the memory set up on here optimal.

Whenever I connect a new hardware (USB memory stick, DV camera, anything basically) Vista won't run the Add Hardware wizard and if I manually select "Add Hardware" from Control Panel I get a pop-up window saying "Cannot run two device installations" and it says another device installation is underway. However, I have checked all possibilities (hidden and non-hidden) from Device Central in Normal and Safe Mode and removed all the devices that were not working properly (a Bluetooth dongle that was apparently not vista compatible) and the problem still exists. Googling for this I found a few postings that were for XP, and relating to deleting a registry key, but those reg keys are not in Vista.

Vista 64 Installed Physical Memory Vs Total Physical Memory

Mar 26, 2009

I'm running Vista 64 Home (SP1) Premium on a homebuilt machine w/8GB (4 X 2GB modules). Windows is reporting 8 GB of Installed Physical Memory but is reporting only 4 GB of Total Physical Memory. I first noticed this when, after installing a game, the game system specs said 3092 MB of RAM.

I have checked the BIOS and it recognizes 8 GB. Memory Remapping is Enabled. Under Memory Remapping is "PCI MMIO Allocation: 4GB to 3328 MB" (?). MSConfig Boot Options shows Max Memory is not checked and no value in the box below. I tried enabling it and using 8192 as the value, but it made no difference. DxDiag shows 8 GB installed RAM. how I can get windows to make available all 8 GB of RAM? Trying 8GB Of Memory On 64?

SP1 32 Bit Memory

Jan 11, 2009

I've spent the last 2 weeks trying to confirm this. With Vista 32bit SP1, is it true that it will not only see the 4 gigs of ram installed, but use all 4 gigs as well? I've had gamers tell me that the OS will show the 4 gigs installed, but that was the only thing Sp1 did. It still can use only around 3.21 gigs.

I've also had system builders say that Vista 32bit SP1 will both show the 4 gigs, and use ALL 4 gigs. Both swear that they are right and the others don't know what they're talking about. I've built a new gaming rig and I have an OEM copy of Vista HP SP1 32 bit, and I want to be sure that I'm not wasting the 4 gigs I have installed, but I can't seem to get a consistent answer from everybody.

only controversy. Even two different MS MVP's gave me two different answers. I'm almost to the point of calling MS tech. support and asking for their best Vista tech. specialist to find out for sure. This is getting ridiculous.

Why Does 64 Use More Memory Than 32

Feb 4, 2008

I am currently running both Vista 64 and Vista 32 on two different drives and I notice that when booted, 64 uses almost 1.2 gig of RAM while 32 uses only about 800meg when booted. The only thing I have on 64 that I don't on 32 is iTunes and the Adobe CS3 suite. Is this normal? If so, why does 64 use more memory than 32? I do have superfetch on for both installs - could it be this that is using the extra memory - preloading iTunes/CS3 apps maybe?

Is Not Using All Ram Or Memory

May 1, 2009

Alright with many games that I'm playing with. There are a few things that are going on that I'm not liking. Yes I know I play Gunz The Duel, and it seems like there is screen lag or something, maybe a delay, not sure what to call it. People were telling me about all the Services that Vista uses slows it down or such like that. Is that true? Or is there another way to fix it. I also play Crysis, and problem with that game, is that it isn't using all of my RAM or memory? It only uses so much, and just leaves the rest alone. Anyway way to make it use more? Also the game supports Dual processors. I have Quad, is there a way to make it use all four of them? Also just with any games, is there a way to just make the games run faster at all without killing the graphic, cause I know my PC can handle the graphics, it just seems like my PC isnt using everything that I put into it.

Physical Memory/RAM

Low Memory On Windows

Mar 23, 2008

I am using an Acer Aspire 5290G laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium. The laptop has 2GB RAM but I have been getting Low Memory warnings after which I have had to reload Windows. At the time the only not automatic applications running are Norton Internet Security, Messenger, iTunes and iPlayer from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

I've tried increasing the virtual memory size to min 4096Mb, max 6144Mb so I'm hoping the problem will go away but it would be useful to know whether this is some kind of known fault or if it is just that Vista is so demanding! I had been running a similar or greater load quite happily under XP Pro on another laptop with only 512Mb RAM. The only intentional difference is that this laptop is running Norton Internet Security whereas the old one was running F-Secure. If the problem persists, is it worth me adding more physical RAM and/or trying a further increase in virtual memory?
