Windows XP Home Lockup & Shutdown

Nov 16, 2009

A friend who has Windows XP Home running on his machine has had several problems in the past week with lockups and not shutting down. He has run Chkdsk and no errors were found. He ran his virus checker ( Avast ) and again no errors were found. He used the Restore program and successfully restored his computer which resulted in the lockups while running from occurring again, but his computer will now not shutdown. He reverts to shutting it down manually, which I explained can cause more problems.

I told him he should have tried the safe mode option to restart in the last good configuration first but at that point he had already used Restore. Is there any other things he could try?

System Lockup Installing Home Premium

Mar 26, 2008

I am assembling a new computer with an ASUS M2A-VM Mother Board. I have installed SATA CD Drive & SATA Maxtor 330gb HD. The installation goes normal until the screen and mouse completly lockup during the "Completing Installation" phase when it is about 3/4's complete after the message"Please wait while Windows Prepares to Start for the First Time". The "Green"progress bar moves across the bottom goes about 3/4's across then stops. I have waited for hours & hours nothing happens but lockup. I have attempted about 12 times after checking thourghly the BIOS settings and installation. I have read some problems have occurred with ATI SB600 chip set which the Motherboard has.

Vista Home Premium 64bit Low Power Shutdown Icon

Jan 31, 2009

For some reason, the laptop I just bought (Gateway FX P-7805u) will not remain shutdown if the Ethernet cable is still plugged in, and will turn itself back on. Sometimes it's immediately after shutdown, sometimes it's a few minutes later. I am actually pressing shutdown (not the "low power" option button, that looks very similar to the shutdown icon, located next to the Lock button in the Start Menu).

System Lockup

Jun 17, 2008

The first problem is that while doing several things (threads) or just doing one the computer will stop functioning when I click on some shortcut from the desktop. I get the spinning blue circle for a cursor but no program will run. I can open Task Manager but no applications are running and no processes are showing unusual behavior. The hard drive LED is blinking at a low level indicating little disk activity. The only way out of this problem is to hit the reset button on the computer. The computer will sit forever and not shutdown via software. A search of Windows' event logs only turns up a warning about improper shutdown.

The second problem and this one is more recently occurring, is that I click on an application's icon in the start menu and absolutely nothing happens. Clicking on other shortcuts gets the same result. It is as if the file association for execuable files has been lost by the systsem. All symptoms are the same as I described above and a hardware shutdown is required. I have tried running Process Explorer in the background to see if I could trap some evidence of what is going on in the system when these things occur but so far it has failed to happen while I have PE running.

Shutdown Causes Hardisks To Spin Up Shutdown 4 Times

Jun 13, 2007

I have read elsewhere of some users experiencing the problem of hard disks making the infamous clicking noises on shutdown of any version of vista. I don't know if its only SATA HD but thats what I have and I am experiencing the same thing. It has me concerned that the clicking of the HD arms might be unnecessary wear and tear. any fixes for this?

Ultimate X64 SP1 Random Lockup

Jun 1, 2008

I am in the process of trying to diagnose an issue with my new system. I recently purchased a new system to play host to multiple VMs that I require for development. I decided to go with 8GB of memory and therefore chose Vista x64 for the OS, which I installed from my MSDN disk. This computer also moonlights as my wife's gaming computer (Sims 2) and does see the occasional game of Crysis.

Everything was running perfectly until after I installed VMWare Workstation 6.0.3. Initially, the computer would seemingly lockup at random during periods of disk I/O while installing programs on the VMs. When the lockup occurs, the harddrive light goes out as well as the lights on the keyboard and mouse, though the monitor stays on; i.e. no blue-screen. The only way to continue is to reset..........

Mem Lockup, Crash, Hard Reboot, Now No OS

Jan 6, 2009

So my system has been rock solid since I built it. Below are my specs.

CPU = Q6600 Quad Core2 Duo @ 2.4Ghz (will OC)
Mobo = ASUS P5Q Pro
Video = PowerColor 1gb 4870 (AX4870 1GBD5-PPH)
PSU = Corsair TW750W
RAM = Kingston Hyper X 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
HD = 2 Maxtor 750GB (32mb Cache) in RAID 0
OS = Vista x64 Ultimate

Now, today, I'm playing Crysis, almost at the end, and it starts choking. Then, it freezes. I alt-tab back to the desktop, and see that my memory meter is pegged at 98%. Nothing is comming back, so instead of waiting it out, I hit the hard reset button. Now, the system won't boot. Error is "No Operating System Found". I can post, but it looks like the RAID controller isn't coming up. I don't recal the 'F' key to hit (or when) to get to the Raid controller.

Why Too Many Windows Updates While Shutdown?

Oct 8, 2009

The initial configurations done as per the setup and wizard instructions provided by hp. After some time, suddenly the system performace was too slow and it has given me a huge shock and made me think like i've wasted my money! BUT after installed the windows updates, it's performance increased tremendously. There is always the alert which shows install Windows updates. Even when i tried to shutdown the system, it pops up 'Install Updates and shut down'.

So i've installed the updates almost every day otherwise it will not allow me to perform any operations. Is this expected behaviour? Can't we work without installing any windows updates atleast for a month? I am afraid may be some performance issue on this model! Due to these every day installation of windows updates, its killing my hard drive like anything.. Intially, in C drive, the free space was 243 GB of 260GB, now its reduced to 225GB of 260GB. I am loosing my memory because of this updates.

Windows Failed To Start: Shutdown And Install Updates In Vista

Oct 6, 2009

last night before bed I clicked shutdown and install updates in Vista. I woke up this morning and my computer will not turn on. It leads me to this: Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.

2. Choose your language settings, and then click "next"

3. Click "repair your computer"

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assisance.

File: BootBCD

Status: 0xc000000f

Info: An error occured while attempting to read the boot configuration data.

problem I have is that I do not have vista installation dvd. I am currently studying abroad in Rome and will take more time than I have to receive the dvd in the mail. None of my friends here have one either, but they all have the same make and model computer that I do. Is it possible for one of them create a installation dvd that I could use? Or could they make a recovery disc that could as least get me to the system recovery options screen?

I've a weird problem with my IE8. Any page I browse to shows a 'Done, with errors on Page' at the status bar and most other sites such as hotmail turn up blank, with the 'Done' at the status bar and a warning sign next to it.

Its driving me crazy, and I cannot spot anything in Event Viewer System/Application logs that corresponds to this occurrence. Is this a virus that has taken over ...? Should I try restoring the system to any restore point?

Windows Home Networking

Mar 23, 2008

I am a reasonably experienced Windows networking user (I have been networking Windows PCs together since Win 3.1) and also a network engineer. Vista has thrown an interesting issue up. I have a Juniper SSG 20 router with an ADSL, wifi and Lan interface on it. The way the Juniper works is it forces the wifi connection to be on a different subnet than the wired network. So, I have a wired network of 192.168.1.X and 192.168.2.X for wifi.

If my PCs are on the same subnet (both on wired or both on wifi), no problems. I can share and make network shares available. If my PCs are on the different networks they cannot see each other and network shares fail. I can ping between the PCs when they are on different subnets, so net connectivity is there. I believe that the Juniper is set up correctly (I have set up a bi-directional trust - any any between the two networks). Has Vista introduced a new level of security preventing browsing between subnets?

Home And Windows.Old Files

Dec 19, 2009

I upgraded my granddaughter's computer from Win.2000 to Vista Home. It had to do a clean install since it was upgrading from Win. 2000 and it stored the previous installation in a folder called Windows.old. This folder takes up 6GB of space and she only has 3GB left on the drive. After all this work I don't want to install a new hard drive if I can avoid it. She can live with only 3GB of drive left but it would help if I could move the Windows.old to an external USB drive.

Can I move Windows.old to an external USB drive and just plug it in if I ever have to reinstall Vista? Since I bought the upgrade DVD I need the previous installation if I ever need to reinstall but I would prefer it to be on a different but accessible drive if possible. I found the Windows Transfer program but it just copies files. I didn't see an option to completely move a folder.

Windows Vista Home Not Booting

Mar 12, 2009

I was wondering if someone might be able to help me. Basically my fiancee's laptop won't boot up anymore. It was playing up and crashed so she held down the power button and then turned it back on. It asked her if she want to boot normally, in safe mode or use the repair environment. We booted normally and nothing happened, nothing loaded up so restarted again and used the RE, went through everything and it still won't boot.

It comes up with an error message referring to external hardware such as a camera or mp3 player, which she hasn't connected, all she has is a bluetooth dongle which has been working fine (she has removed this and done the repair thing again too to no avail). The only thing she has done is log online and updated itunes.

She's run the repair program again and when it prompts to restart it gets to the green bar, does nothing for a while and then goes back asking to run the repair program or boot normally.

Incedently, when she presses F8, there is no option to select safe mode, only the repair program or boot normally.

We don't really want to do a fresh install, and besides I don't think she was given all the discs when she bought it, although I need to double check. The command prompt can be accessed though.
