Voice Greeting Upon Logon / Logoff
Feb 23, 2010
A friend of mine has a computer just like mine. HP, dual processors, 500 gig HD and when he logs on a voice greets him with good morning/evening and his name. when he logs off the same voice says goodby. Someone else set up his computer and he doesn't know how the guy did it. I would like to set mine up the same way. How do I do it? I know it can be done. He uses MSN and Quest. I use MSN and Comcast. Is this a Quest thing?

Instead of showing the default logon, logoff and shutdown status messages you can enable detailed messages that will tell you exactly what is going on. Wondering what is taking your logon so long? With detailed messages turned on you will see messages like Processing group policy and other specific tasks Windows Vista is executing.
To enable detailed status messages on your computer, follow these steps: ....

I was trying to find the registry value in Vista where you can change the option from shutdown to logoff. By default Vista remember the last option you have chosen and I would like to change that when a user logs in.

Running Vista64 on HP pavillion. Wireless connects great after gigaset se567 is rebooted. But if I logoff or reboot my computer, I can no longer connect until I reboot the router again. Happens if wireless is lost as well. Is an autoconnection to a non-broadcast SSID. if I manually disconnect and wait a min I can manually reconnect. Have done an ipcongif /all at one point and it showed all proper IP's etc, but I could not connect to any websites. Local access only.

The only problem is with voice chatting on chat messengers like Gtalk, yahoo, windows live. The chat browsers seem to work perfect except that I cant hear what other persons speak. They can listen to my voice, but I cant hear what they say. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling these chat browsers a few times but it gives me the same problem. There is no error message as such. And as I said, I can listen to music, I can see movies with songs on the same PC but I cant hear what other people say while voice chatting.
I heard there was some Codec issue with Yahoo messenger and tried installing the tsp_codec as an administrator but even that did not help. I installed the latest Gtalk, Yahoo messenger ( as well as Windows messenger Live but still there is the same problem. I dont know what is wrong. If my PC speakers or audio drivers were bad I would not be able to listen to music also but I can hear songs record voice etc. Its only when I try to voice chat with other people I cant hear what they say. They hear me pitch perfect.

I want to change the voice on my PC from the default Anna to any other. Although I have downloaded and installed other voices, I still have only one option in the Select Voice bar under Voice Settings. I have seen this problem reported in other forums and have yet to find any solution.

find an external (USB) voice modem that would be compatible with Vista. There should be mic in, spkr out jacks on the modem for it to be a true voice modem. I would like to use my computer as a telephone. I want to be able to plug the telephone landline into the external modem, and use programs (such as MS Outlook) to make telephone calls from my computer.

I'm having trouble getting to the logon screen today after I shut it down yesterday last night. My friend's son was using my laptop to write up a research report for class and decided to go -exploring- in the system32 folder. He said all he did was move an authui file? I tried using my vista recovery disks, but I can't seem to locate them with all cluttered junk laying around the room(still cleaning).

I have a little workgroup. I have a printer server running 2000 Pro, 5 PCs running XP, and 2 Laptops running Vista. I can print and access the files in the 2000 Pro server from any XP PC. From both Laptops running vista I can see all the computers in the workgroup, I can also see the files and use the printer of any PC running XP. The problem is between Vista and 2000 Pro. I can access files in the Vista Laptops from the 2000 Pro Server, but I can not see any shared folder or use any printer in the 2000 Pro Server from the Vista Laptops. Each time I try to connect to the 2000 Pro Server from the Vista laptops I get a logon dialog box; I defined in the 2000 Pro server the same users I have in the Vista laptops (I did't do so for the XP PCs and they work just fine) and no matter what user I use to logon (I try to use also the 2000 Pro administrator user) I always get a "Logon Unsucessful" error.

I'm completely new at this lap top thing, and I hate the fingerprint logon function. I want to get rid of it from my welcome screen so I looked and went into the Fingerprint Reader Suit, clicked on Settings, then System Settings, got a pop up window, clicked on the Logon tab to try and switch from Fingerprint Logon to Standard Windows Log on but that screen is greyed out and it doesn't allow me to switch off the Fingerprint Logon!!!! How do I change it and delete the icon from my welcome screen!!?

Domain/AD environment where dcs are Win2k3 and print server is Win 2000 Server. The following logon script is used to map HP Laserjet 4200/4250 printers:
Set WshNetwork = CreateObject("WScript.Network")
Set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
WshNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection \printserverprintername
This works fine on all our XP clients but not on our Vista clients, even though the printers have been configured with vista drivers on the print server. When logging on to a Vista client, the printers are not installed and the following message is displayed:
"To use the shared printer \printserverprintername, you need to install the printer driver on your computer. If you do not recognize or trust the name and location of the printer, do not install the driver." The user then has the option to Install the driver, but it requires administrative access to do so (our users are not admins).

Just starting to look at Vista, but one thing that I haven't figured out is how to change the login. In XP Pro, if you went to user accts in control panel, you could choose to change the way users log on and log off, that way it didn't come up with the list of users on the machine, but worked like a domain login where you had to input your username and password.
I can't figure out how to change this on a stand alone Vista machine. I don't want the list of users, I just want to hit ctrl-alt-del and get a sign on screen where I input the username and password. Is this possible, and how/where do I make this change? Again, it is Vista Ultimate.

Ive been having problems with my laptop just recently, it was sudden! I had no problem whatsoever with it before, its an acer aspire 5630, ive never had major problems with it and its almost two years old! I can get into safe mode but as soon as i do it comes up with a black screen that says safe mode in every corner! Ive tried repairing my computer from one of the options listed with safe mode and it tells me it cant repair itself! this happened two days ago and i still have no idea on what to do, i use my laptop for school, it is very important that i get it fixed, im not sure if its something wrong with my laptop or windows, I have windows vista home premium.

Looking thru the computer for unwanted or unneeded apps I came across under Task Scheduler Summary a task named "Secunia PSI Logon Task" (last run failed, etc), there are multiple instances under it w/no dates. Strange, if no program installed how can it run? Did find it in the library; program is on the computer but not installed, why would it still be attempting to run or check for updates if not installed?
Also "NAP Status UI (last run was stopped at, etc with multiple entries sublisted which is not in the library but google says that it for network admin for Windows 7. Could it also appy to Vista somehow?

Im new to computers and I got given a laptop running Vista Home Basic. I forgot the password at logon and now the laptop doesnt allow me to go any further than the Password input page at start-up. Is there any way I can bypass the password bit?
Ive tried starting up in safe mode, all that does is present me with the same problem. I did notice the bios screen states the password enabler is set to disabled. Does that mean anything? How do i enable it?

I've created a new user account but can't log into it - I always get the message "The User Profile Service failed the logon. User Profile cannot be loaded". I can log into all other user accounts. I am wondering if this has anything to do with the fact that I removed a user and then deleted the users's folder and all the files in that folder including NTUSER.dat file. Is there something I need to do to be able to log into the new user account(s)?

My sister-in-law who lives in Australia finally decided to use a PC to keep in touch over the internet. She bought a Laptop using Vista and set it up with one user account around 2 months ago. She is not computer literate and barely knows how to switch it on. It has taken her up till now to switch it on for the second time as she just got broadband installed at her home. The problem we now have is that she has forgotten the password she created and cannot logon to the system. I am not familiar with Windows Vista and was unable to advise her how to logon using the default Administrator account. It seems Vista is much different from XP in this respect. Can anyone advise me if I can access the default admin account on the logon screen or if there is another way to reset the password without talking her through a system restore. She didn't create password reset disks.

I recently did a clean install of Vista Ultimate. When I ran setup it asked for a name and choose a picture. Every start-up since then brought me directly to my desktop. I installed Office Ultimate a few days ago and now when I start up it consistently takes me to the welcome screen and forces me to choose "Administrator" or the name I typed during install. I have UAC disabled, but I'm not sure that has an impact here as it booted fine before. Outside of system restore, is there a way to regain my 'normal' start-up again?
