At the moment it runs XP pro (Very well i might add!) but my friend insists on wanting Vista ultimate installed instead. I have shown him the rig with XP running but he is not convinced! So before he rushes out and buys a copy, i would like to get some "Real world" opinions on vista ultimate on this hardware. (just so i dont get a ear full of abuse if its slow as a snail!)

I know, though, about the 3GB limit of a 32bit system(I hear people say that Vista 32 utilizes (NOT recognize, but UTILIZE) 4GB of RAM, but I have yet to see any evidence that supports that, so I will stick to the idea that 3GB is the limit) I know that the 3GB=System RAM+Video RAM. I install 1 Nvdia 8800GT 512mb video card. System RAM reads 2.5GB. 3GB of System RAM-the 512 of the video card=2.5GB. goody gumdrops. I insall the 2nd Nvidia 8800GT 512 video card and enable SLI.System RAM reads 1.5GB? Shouldn't it read 2.0GB?? 3GB of System RAM-512 for card 1-512 for card 2=2.0...not 1.5...??? Where did the missing 500mb go? AND IF Vista 32 is supposed to be able to utilize 4GB, then shouldn't my RAM read 3.5 before SLI and 3.0 after SLI??? I have built and rebuilt, installed and reinstalled and I still come up with the same thing no matter what I try.
I've just spent a fair amount of time getting Vista Ultimate x64 running quite well thank you very much,now MS is saying Windows 7 will be available late 2009 or early 2010.So after spending a decent amount of hard earned cash on Vista will there be an upgrade version for Vista users or will I have to purchase "7" and waste my Vista installations???.

Ive tried attaching headphones and stuff but none of them work. im pretty sure its probably my driver problem but i have no idea how to check what my sound card is. ive already tried realtek and soundmax but none of them work! Anyone has an idea where and how to check my soundcard and how to solve this problem?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI Have Windows Vista OEM 32 bit that came on my computer. I noticed that the full retail version of ultimate includes the 32 and 64 bit install. With the anytime upgrade to ultimate can I choose between the 32 and 64 bit vista ultimate? I do realize that I would have to do a clean install of the 64 bit OS. I would like to try the 64 bit version but would also like to be able revert back to the 32 bit if the 64 bit doesn't work out. If I can't then the 32 bit version it is as I need to join a domain.........
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have this remote control,I just re-installed VIsta Ultimate, and now this remote control is not working anymore.. it was working fine before I did the re-install..it comes w/no driver, so short of disconnecting and connecting the transmitter again to a USB port not sure what more I can do.. it used to work fine not just with Windows Media Center but also with Rhapsody and other stuff, now it does not work at all... I just put new batteries in it... when I press a button on the remote the green light on the remote goes on and the red light on the transmitter also goes on.. so it's definitely not a battery problem..

In November I upgraded my system with Vista Ultimate. When it was returned to me I followed each prompt and did everything during installation it asked of me. Now 5 months later is states that I need to validate. I guess whatever was running on my system was temporary. Does anyone know that if I purchase a new product key this will solve my issue or do I have to purchase a full version? If I do have to purchase a full version can it be installed over my already installed and running vista on my system?

When I try to install the version 8.5 (from the ATI site) nothing happens. If I force to install the new drive, Vista Update still inform the best drive is the older, and the CCC (Catalyst control center) still not installed.
View 9 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine has been locked out of his Dell laptop and cannot find the password for the single account that it has. The laptop has Vista Ultimate installed on it and I am unable to activate the hidden administrator's account to get into Vista. Other investigations using other software shows only 2 accounts, Administrator and Guest but not the actual user single account that shows up onto the login screen. ( I have managed to blank out the Administrator and Guest passwords ) I have a standard Vista Recovery Disk , but I am unable to either repair or re-install Vista from the Dell hidden partition , and the only alternative is to install a unused retail version of Vista Home Premium that my friend has been given awhile ago. I have 2 questions
1) Is the Vista Ultimate user account passwords located in a different place as compared to other versions of Vista?
2) if I install this retail version of Home Premium on the Dell laptop, will I have problems with the propriety hardware that is on the Dell laptop and would I need to find all the Dell drivers for the laptop?
CANNOT SIMPLY UPGRADE WITHIN VISTA??? FIRST TIME ISSUE EVER POSTED! I have a question that I cannot make sense of. I have Windows Vista Home Basic with SP1 installed on my computer. I have a copy of a legit retail version of Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade SP1 DVD-ROM. I want to upgrade my current Vista Home Basic to Vista Ultimate. Sounds simple enough. I have read everywhere on the web and it can upgrade easily as long as you upgrade within Windows Vista and not a reboot installation. Okay, but when I get to a point in the Vista grade process, I CANNOT! During the installation process, when I get to the screen that states, "Which type of installation do you want?" AFTER INPUTTING THE VISTA ULTIMATE KEY CODE ON A PREVIOUS SCREEN, the option should be "Upgrade" ONLY and NOT "Custom (Advanced)" since the key code is set for upgrade option only. I GET THE TOTAL OPPOSITE!!! I only get the option "Custom (Advanced)" and the "Upgrade" option is grayed out. WHAT??? NO "Upgrade" option??? I SHOULD BE GETTING THE "Upgrade" OPTION!!! This does not make any sense!!! It states at the reason at the bottom of this screen, "Upgrade has been disabled. - The upgrade option cannot be started, to upgrade, cancel the installation and then choose to upgrade to a version of Windows that is more recent than the version you are currently running." This does not make any sense, does it??? I should be able to only upgrade since I only have an upgrade disc. I am upgrading from a lower edition of Vista to a higher edition of Vista, therefore I should ALSO have this feature to upgrade enabled too when it knows my CD key is a higher ("upgrade") edition. I have spent several hours searching and read around the web and cannot find my same or similar case scenario. A first time! People who have upgraded between different editions of Vista with either the Windows Anytime Upgrade retail package or (mine) the Windows Vista Ultimate Retail Upgrade box (includes the Windows Anytime Upgrade anyways on it) say it is a breeze! What is going on with me??? I should not be having any problems what-so-ever!

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have run Windows XP on my system since 2004. I have been running 2GB of system RAM through 4x512 Corsair valueselect memory sticks. I attempted to install Vista Business on Monday and the system would never get to the point where it would ask to create the user account without going into a reboot loop that I couldn't get out of (even in safe mode). After removing and replacing hardware, the only thing that would solve the problem was to remove 2 of the 512 sticks and leaving the RAM at 1GB. Now after vista is installed, I can't put the RAM back without having the reboot loop return. Does know how I can get Vista to recognize my other 1GB without getting all mad and throwing a temper tantrum?....

When i want to print Test page, only row of 2-20 smilies is coming out in best case and print job shows error . When i ask HP, they say Microsoft is responsible for drivers. Microsoft says i should ask HP. I slowly begin to be annoyed. Have bought short certified hi-speed USB 2.0 cable. View 9 Replies View RelatedMy PC has two hard drives. Windows gave me the option on boot up of proceeding with either Windows XP or Windows Vista home basic which worked fine. I then Ultimate 32 bit over the XP installation and again all seemed ok. However, the other morning I switched on the pc and got the dreaded Bootmgr is missing message. I have tried fixing using the vista disc but when it says select the OS to repair nothing is showing. If i click next and then choose the repair option it goes through the process and then you reboot but the problem still remains. I have also tried the command prompt options but they make no difference either. The Bios recognises both my hard drives are there ok.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI installed a copy of Vista x64 Ultimate to try out on my machine because i have 4Gb of ram and windows XP doesn't recognize it It installed on my AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ black edition no problem, but after it downloaded 42 updates i went into a BSOD loop. No matter what i did after that, i could not re-install XP on anyone of the 6 Hd's i had in my system. If i tried... BSOD.
I had no choice but to purchase yet another HD (which i didnt really need) just so i can use that as a singular connected drive to install XP on again.Now then, most of my drives are now unreadable in XP and i get messages like this an error occurred reading folder:the volume does not contain a recognized file system. please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted (1005) I have even tried connecting said drives to USB/Firewire external enclosures to see if i can access files that way. If i have lost over 2Tb of data on these drives just for installing vista, i will be looking for someone at MS to assassinate please tell me there is a viable solution to this

I installed these myself and are custom OS's, im not sure if this has anything to do with the problem, but.. Once i installed XP, there was no options to boot into Vista. So in goes the Vista repair disk, and im back into Vista..and pretty soon id like to get back into XP ( My media centre, editing, creating videos, and playing games, and doing things non-vista compatable) but i dont want to have to recover my damn computer everytime. Btw ive tried other sites and forums before bothering you guys.
