Bootup/recovery, Change Registry

Jun 13, 2009

Suddenly my CounterSpy pops up with something saying that a program is trying to change my registry, I wasn't trying to do anything with that so I hit block. Few seconds later another CS pop up says "A known program is attempting to run was blocked" All it said was Program: services.exe (Misc (general )). Then about a minute later the system rebooted itself.

So after it rebooted it'll take me to the "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause." screen with the safe mode options. Here's where the prob starts. After I select any of the safe modes (w/networking, w/command prompt, last know good config.,) or start windows normally I jus get looped back to the BSOD and go through this cycle of rebooting and back to the safe mode select screen. I've tried popping in the windows install cd and trying to repair from there via recovery. It works. Nice! The thing is it recovers right to where the whole mess started with the CounterSpy pop up and I have about 60 seconds to where the system will reboot itself and I'm back to the BSOD and safe mode screens. So basically I'm runnin in cicrles here. It's Vista Premium 32bit btw

Registry To Change DefaultIcon For File Types

Nov 10, 2009

1) How can I change the default icons for file types in the registry? I added the key "DefaultIcon" to several file types as listed in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and set the data to the full file path of the icon I'd have thought that would work. I've restarted, and it did not.Where is the correct location & method?

2) Also: (once I get the correct location & make the edits) How can I create a registry file that will add the specified changes to an existing registry when clicked? Not save the entire registry, and replace it, just add the specified keys & data to install these icon changes. This should be at least good as a backup, for editing a new or reinstalled OS, and ideally (if possible) a file that can perform a smart operation by substituting or getting around the current system's user folder name.

Unable To Change WEP Passphrase

Mar 23, 2008

I have just purchased a new HP laptop with wireless network card; after much fussing I was able to connect to internet successfully but only WITHOUT any protection on the router. When I attempt to apply WEP it doen't get a signal back from router. During process of trying solutions, I changed the passphrase on the router to a 5-character word (it was an 8-character word which has been working for more than a year with other wireless laptop) but new laptop with Vista Home Premium wants 5 or 13 characters, so I changed in the router. BUT the Properties of the linksys connection still shows the old (8 character) password and even when I change it and save out, it goes back to the old one. I have tried to get at those properties several ways but no luck. Note: I can get connected through this router if I hardwire the laptop AND am successful wirelessly as long as connection isn't protected (obviously not good idea.)

Can Change Existing Registry Entries & Add New Entries To Make Vista More Secure?

Mar 14, 2009

I have a laptop with Home Premium. I'm thinking about upgrading to Ultimate. I have some questions. Home Premium doesn't have any policy editors. I know that I can change existing Registry entries & add new entries to make Vista more secure. When one makes a change to a policy editor, in what file is the change stored? Or is it stored in the Registry? If policy editor changes are stored in the Registry, then one really doesn't need to upgrade to Ultimate or have a PC with Ultimate. So, ultimately (no pun intended) can one use the Registry to make Home Premium as secure as (or possibly more secure than) Ultimate & achieve the same results as one who has Ultimate?

Users Are Unable To Change Domain Password

May 1, 2008

Our network is 2003 AD with XP clients and about 120 vista enterprise machines. When you try to change your domain password on a vista box is tells you the username or password are incorrect, doing the same on XP machine is fine. We have another seperate 2003 AD network using the same Vista image, here we have no problem. Everyone group would appear to have change password permissions, like I say all on XP is fine but not Vista on this AD. We have update to SP1 on Vista, no change and Group Policy looks fine.

Quicksys Registry Cleaner: Not Recommended To Defragment Registry Across Drives

Feb 27, 2009

WARNING: only for advanced users who like to clean the registry. Quicksys regcleaner normally $25 free - only 4hrs left from here: http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/

Win 7 compatible - have used this and deleted all 1200 entries it found. It makes a backup - been running for several hours and reboots with no probs. Also working fine so far on my Vista x64 and Win 7 x86 installs. After cleaning you need to shut the app. and reopen it for it to find it's backups. (Easy to find them by hand - it can compress them to.7z files, too ). Have used their regdefrag a lot - identical scans and results to the Auslogics and Glary versions- so use whichever defragger you already have. WARNING: not recommended to defrag registry across drives.

Uniblue Registry Booster And Registry Scans.

Nov 13, 2009

I am using this program to clean up my registry and it seems to work fine except the errors keep coming back. I can do a scan, clean up all the errors and then shut down and start up and I have a new 20 registry error list and most or all of the errors relate to "bad path for the value" and its windows files that seem to be at fault. I don't understand why Microsoft operating system would create registry errors on a startup, before anything has been installed etc. is RegistryBooster misleading me or what. I am running win7 but it did the same thing on vista home premium so I think the question is valid for this group.

Permissions

Oct 20, 2009

When I try to run QuickTime I get an Error -2095 alert. When I click Run As Administrator it opens OK.I am the owner and sole user of the computer. How do a give full permissions to myself?I tried going to the program file, opening properties and then the Permissions tab. There are 3 entries in the top window:

SYSTEM
Administrator (EUSTACE PCAdminstrators)
Users (EUSTACE PCUsers)

When I click the last, in the lower window I see checked only Read & Execute and Read, not Full control and the others.

I clicked Edit, and added checkmarks to everything (except Special Permissions that I can't).

I click OK and return to the former dialog, but the permissions for Users have not changed.

When I click Advanced I see 4 lines. Lines 2 and 3 are System and Administrator. Lines 1 and 4 are:

Allow Users (EUSTACE PCUsers) Full Control
Allow Users (EUSTACE PCUsers) Read & Execute C:Program Files

Is the second line necessary?

If I highlight it and click Edit and then highlight it again and click Edit, check Full control, OK, the dialog closes and in the first dialog the line 1 is highlighted and line 4 is the same.

Permissions, UAC Off

Apr 22, 2009

it seems that I have managed to lock myself into a corner here and I am hoping some of you gents can pull me out w/o loosing any body limbs. I have a very special folder, within that folder I have a few files and, until recently, they were working. I decided to try a script to hide the folder so nobody could get to it. After a new build, the script did not work anymore so I decide not to bother with it anymore. the problem is that now that I want to move the folder to my external passport drive, I am getting the following 2 permission pop ups and I can't, for the life of me, make this happen.

I have tried turning the UAC off, tried elevating myself to the highest, I have taken ownership of the folder and the Drive where the folder resides, I have also given me full access of the folder and the files and still, I am getting the dreaded errors. Before attempting to open my case and take the drive out to be used as an external usb/sata drive on my XP laptop in hopes that this will allow me to get it (I am thinking it won't).

Overriding Permissions

Jan 1, 2009

I've got a program that starts up when the computer does, or so I've told Vista a thousand times. It still blocks it every time I reboot the computer. How can I set a permission for the thing to run all the time? I can't seem to find where to do that either... I can find my way to the window that shows what's permitted and what's not, but I can't edit them. I'm logged in as an administrator, so I should be able to, but Vista's being overly protective (really, I have a mother for that ). Why is it doing this to me?

Deletion Permissions

Aug 1, 2009

I'm in the habit of deleting everything that goes into my downloads folder within my user folder because having a bunch of installers sitting there is pointless. Recently, however, whenever I attempt to delete any of these installers within my downloads folder,it tells me that "I need to permission to perform this action." These files can't be in use by anything and as administrator I don't see why it suddenly will not allow me to delete this things after I've been doing it for months. If I restart the computer,it WILL let me delete these things. But never before that.

Help! Horrible Experience With Permissions

May 15, 2010

I seem to suddenly have lost capability to do various things with my PC (I am admin, Vista still correctly displays that I am admin). For instance I can no longer send/receive emails from my Outlook 2003. It says "you don't have appropriate ermissions to perform this operation".

From time to time it complains that extend.dat has disappeared whereas this is not true, it is still to be found under "C:Users<username>AppDataLocalMicrosoftOutlook".

I have ensured ownership and full control under my username of C:Users<username>AppDataLocalMicrosoftOutlook as well as C:UsersGregoireApplication DataMicrosoftOutlook.

I have also copied my Outlook.pst file to OutlookWhiteKnight.pst and redirected my inbox and mail delivery to this but TO NO AVAIL.

Of course if I turn User Access Control off it works fine again but that's a bit overstretched and surely there is a way to go back to the previous state without killing UAC.

Other things that have happened is I lost my ability to scan, ability to copy certain files from my wife's account to our archive and other sweets like this.

Ah and one last element of detail is that my wife does not have the problem and she is a standard user.

What I *suspect* the initial cause might be is that I have installed a security sweeper from my remote-access website from my employer and it probably messed up with the dtcom config but that's where my knowledge stops. I checked the config the INTERACTIVE user was there (don't ask me what that is, I found that following some threads on google and various websites). I have of course a proper helpdesk from work but they claim it's not their fault and that it can't possibly be because I am the first to report such a problem amongst many users and that as per policy they won't help me with my personal laptop etc etc. Anyway that suspicion itself as to the cause won't help me much.
