USB External Floppy Disk Drive-New Purchase Recommendation

Mar 23, 2008

I need to purchase a USB 3.5 inch external floppy disk drive to transfer files from from my old computer, which is running Windows 98, to my new computer running Vista Home Premium. The external floppy disk drives I've looked at on NewEgg.com all support versions of Windows up to Vista but not including Vista. I do not want to deal with driver problems so I'm doing this research up front

NAS Drive Recommendation

Feb 6, 2009

Can you recommend a NAS (Network Attached Storage) drive for my home network? I need ...
- 1 or 2 TB
- RAID 0 or 1 (5 would be nice)
- Ethernet 10/100/1000
- Supports clients running Win XP Pro, Vista Home Premium x64, Vista Enterprise x32
- Under $500 (the more under the better)
- Good data transfer rate

I've looked at Western Digital My Book World Edition but it has problems with Vista x64 (drops the network several times a day. WD's support says they've never tested it with any 64-bit OS. Worked just fine before adding the Vista 64 client. Plus its data transfer rate was abysmal). I've looked at Buffalo LinkStation and Netgear and Iomega. All have reviews ranging from great to junk. Would anyone care to post their opinions?

Can't Copy To USB Flash Disk Or External Hard Drive

Aug 3, 2009

I can't copy to my USB flash disk (Kingston Data Traveler 8GB) or my external hard drive - Toshiba 2.5'' 160 GB HDD in a USB powered external enclosure. I can copy very small files to the flash drive - like 500-800 kb. Anything bigger results in "preparing to copy" window with a scrolling bar. Nothing happens if i wait... The first time i plugged in the USB hard drive, Windows recognized it and tried installing drivers for it but it just hung on "Windows is installing drivers for this device" and i had to unplug the drive since nothing was happening. Now nothing happens, i don't even get the previously mentioned balloon in the bottom right corner, though the hard drive powers up.

And to make this even crazier, my USB mouse and keyboard work just fine, no matter of what USB i connect them (front panel, back). I tried uninstalling them from Device Manager, enabling/disabling Legacy USB Support from the BIOS (was set to BIOS Setup Only), plugging them in all the USB port i have, including front panel. There is nothing wrong with both the USB flash drive and the USB hard drive - they work perfectly on my laptop the second i plug them in.

Using A Thumb Drive As A Floppy

Dec 27, 2007

Can you use a thumb drive as a bootable floppy? For such things as updating the BIOS? I don't have a physical floppy drive and it appears that without it you can't update the bios. Never had a thumb drive before and their really cheap now. Just wanted to know how do you go about making it bootable and such if this is doable!

I built myself a computer a couple of years ago and have Vista Ultimate on it. Recently I went to create a floppy disk for maintenance on another computer and found that the floppy drive (which I haven't used before) is labeled as the B drive. How do I change that back to A? Right now I am using subst a: "b:" which works for now but would rather set it permanently.

External HDD Acting Up: "You Need To Format The Disk In Drive F: Before You Can Use It."

May 6, 2009

I am writing because i have an external 500Gig Western Digital HDD that I have been using for months now...it has not been exposed to extreme temperatures, banged around or overused in any way. I plugged it in today and it showed up under "My Computer" as Local Disk(F: ).

Then a message came up stating "You need to format the disk in drive F: before you can use it." Next it asks if i want to format now, and i can choose Format, or Cancel. I am not sure if this is some sort of driver issue, something more serious with the computer, or if this is something with this drive.

External Hard Drive Crash: Drive Is EMPTY

Oct 6, 2009

I was starting my computer today (that has Vista), and during the start up process, a black screen came up stating that there was an error opening up my external hard drive and it was checking for errors. After it finally booted up, I went to open the hard drive files, and it was totally BLANK! I then restarted the computer, and still the hard drive is EMPTY! I had ALL my important files in there!

The ONLY thing that looks promising is that when I go to Start then to Computer, it shows the hard drive there, and it still shows that 43GB are free of 111GB of storage (same info shows by right clicking on it and going to Properties). Why would it show this if nothing is on the hard drive anymore? Is there ANYWAY to recover these files again you think???? I NEED those files!!!! Remember that the hard drive STILL PHYSICALLY WORKS. It's just that I cannot access the files on my pc at the time for some reason.......

Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again later. "I made sure everything was closed, checked with Task Manager and tried again. Same message. After 20 minutes, I finally just disconnected it.

USB Drive Or External Hard Drive

Sep 8, 2009

I have Windows XP and Vista. I always go through "safely remove hardware" before pulling off USB drive on XP. However, I have been trying to do the same on Vista, it seems that I cannot do the same as XP. For instance, I plug in my USB on Vista and it appears as H drive on Vista, when I am ready to do "safely remove hardware", I don't see the device drive H is on the "Safely remove hardware" window, so I cannot stop the H drive. I am concerned about the Vista hardware.

I used to have XP OEM version on a PC and it had a limit of five reloads before you had to contact Microsoft to ask for another activation beyond that.

Windows Can't Format Drive H: - Check To See That The Disk And Drive Are Connected Properly

Jul 29, 2009

i just bought My Book Essential 1 TB today... and when i got home i plug it and it works just fine but its bothering me that the HDD type is FAT32 .. so i format it and try to change it to NTFS.. but somethings happen and boom the electric in my apartment was down... and so when the electric back i want to format it again but i can't... there drive is detected but with no space detail... it says "Windows can't format Drive H: - Check to see that the disk and drive are connected properly, make sure that the disk is not read-only, and then try again.

For more information, search Help for read-only files and how to change them" when i open the Disk Management from (My COmputer > Manage) it seems it's already a volume.. but the weird thing there is no space detail.. and i cant erase the volume ... i've tried using diskpart but i can't do nothing because there is no volume and i can't erase the disk... no luck with fsutil cause its not ntfs... I havent tried 3rd party software and i havent tried it on other computer (don't have other computer right now) and WDC didnt give live cd for formatting because all of them was in the drive... though i already redownload it but the program is useless..

External Hard Drive

Mar 23, 2008

I recently bought a western digital 1TB hard drive which I had to reformat before I could use. Everything works good now, except for onething. Sometimes the computer doesn't want to restart while the new drive is plugged in. If I remove it from the USB port prior to restarting, it will restart just fine.

It shuts down and turns on without an issue. This only happens when I
restart the system with it plugged in.

So while it's not a big issue,it is an annoyance.

External Drive Can Not Be Formated

Apr 24, 2010

For some reason, It's unable to either normally format any external memory devices into a FAT or FAT32 format, or unable to read it at all. I keep trying to open the device but it keeps saying that i need to format it, but because of problem 1, it can't be formated (it almost completes but the process shuts down, stating that it can't be formated). This problem has been happening for the longest time and I really need this fixed.

When I say external memory devices, i mean CDs, DVDs, Flash drives, SD cards, memory card readers. Everytime I check the disk management of these devices, it says they are Primary Partitioned (which is the normal status right?). And the only thing that seems to be the problem is the RAW file system (which I heard windows doesn't read). However, the wierd thing is if I plug in something like a USB mouse, or a camera, it has full functionality (I.E. the mouse works/files are reachable on the camera). I then tried to format it using the cmd lines, and tried to format it to FAT32, but after it says 100% formated, and i try to use it again, Disk Management tells me that it's back in RAW format.

External Hard Drive Gone

Jul 29, 2009

I am in need of assistance concerning my external hard drive. My hard drive has been working flawlessly for the past 3 years. As of today, my computer no longer recognizes it. This is what I have done so far:

-Unplugged it, plugged it back up, and my computer made a chime saying that it was recognized and said that it was ready to go.
-However, the HDD does not show up on the my computer tab.

-I removed the HDD from its enclosure, purchased a USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE and tried uploading the HDD to my wife's computer. Once again, her computer chimed saying that it was recognized (she runs XP, i have vista), but, once again, the hard drive was not in the my computer folder.

-I then proceeded to Computer Management, Disk Management, and noticed that my external hard drive is not there either.

I thought that maybe intially my power cord to the outlet in the wall just went bad, but after I bought the USB to SATA/IDE adapter and it still didn't work...well, I ran out of options.

I recently fresh installed my Vista Premium x86 on my homebuilt, and I had all my data backed up on my flash. When I plug it in, Vista dings like normal, but it is not in Windows Explorer and Disk Management. The Drive did have some Code 10 Device Cannot Start problems, but those are worked out when I disabled it and re-installed the driver, and the drive DOES show up in 'Safely Remove Hardware' and the Device Manager. I kinda diagnosed that it doesnt have a Drive Letter assigned, due to the flash drive working in my XP x64 dual-boot.
