View 8 RepliesBought a Toshiba Satellite A100 from ebay with a cracked screen. I changed the screen yesterday, and the laptop worked well with no problems. Then today I decided to do a fresh installation of Vista because of all the previous owner had the hard drive in a bit of a mess. I installed using my normal Vista Anytime Upgrade disk and as soon as it finished installing I started getting all these messages like "Windows Modules installer has stopped working", "Desktop Window Manager has stopped working" and "TFncKy has stopped working". Things I've tried include reinstalling Vista from another disk. Using a different hard drive, changed the ram, installed all the proper drivers, installed vista updates (won't let me install SP1), staring at it menacingly & banging my head off the desk.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just got a new computer with 64-bit Vista Home Premium, and am having some issues with devices. When I connected my Lexmark X6100 printer, Vista recognized it and even took me to the website to download drivers, which I then installed. when I bring up Printers in Control Panel, the Lexmark is not listed. The X6100 also includes a scanner which again Vista found, but it directed me to the same download as for the printer (not surprising). There is an entry for the Lexmark X6100 in my Start Menu, but the only option there is to uninstall the software.
My old computer ran XP Pro and the Lexmark worked perfectly there. There was even an icon in the system tray that appeared at startup. A second issue has arisen with my webcam, a Logitech Quickcam Pro 5000, which Vista also recognized, and there was a prompt which looked as though it was from the Logitech driver asking for a disk which I did not provide, because I didn't think it was necessary. The cam also worked well under XP without any additional software installation.
Vista's Device Manager reports that both devices are working properly, but I am unable to access either of them. I also installed a program called PDF Factory which I used as my default printer on my old computer, and it's working just fine - and it shows up in my Printer panel.
When I boot up my notebook, the sidebar doesn't appear, the network icon in the taskbar has a red X on it (but I'm still connected to a network),and the task manager won't appear after pressing ctrl-shift-esc or right clicking on the taskbar. When I try to bring up the task manager, all I get is a green grid icon in the taskbar which cannot be accessed. If I try to initiate task manager multiple times, I get multiple green grids
in the taskbar. The missing sidebar is kind of grayed out with inaccessible menu buttons at the top, and when the cursor is placed in that area I get the "thinking" cursor.
After having some difficulty with "the black screen of death" and coming to the realization that my CA anti-virus wasn't picking up the bug that was causing my problems, I've switched to Norton 360 and eliminated the virus that was giving me fits. However, now that I've got my desktop back and things seem to be (a bit more) back to normal, I can't open my task manager or get into my disk manager or registry editor. The task manager just simply won't show up as an option and opening mmc/regedit just brings up the notepad.

I think I disabled it trying to update it. This was before I found this short sweet article from Microsoft. Does anyone know if I will experience problems in the future when this new technology gets more prevalent? If so, how do I get it back. I followed the instructions that a vista pro gave me to fix this problem and it shows in the reliability monitor that it was installed...but it is not showing int he device manager. Would it be installed but not show on the device manager?

I found way to turn on lptop by pressing "delete" bottun when lenovo start screen appears and choosing F1 to go to BIOS and "Exit discarding changes". Then lptop normally works.but i do nothing.just "exit discarding changes"
The problem comes from trying to install new applications i.e. firefox, winrar, and utorrent, are just a few that we have tried to install. The same error keeps occurring, it will automatically come to the error window stating that the program "has stopped working" and proceeds to search for a solution. So far I have run the program as an administrator, compatibility mode, and have tried searching the even id #1000 on the windows support forums. Also it is the same exception code every time occurring from application error 0xc0000005.

I believe I've seen some references to this elsewhere, but can't find a resolution. For example, I will read a post, where the original poster used the Google web interface to create and post his message. When I choose Reply to Group, the original post is properly quoted and all is well.
By this I mean that the previous post will have a marker, the default being >, and more are added for each level of reply. The poster replies to my reply, again using the Google interface, with proper quoting appearing for the two previous messages. But now, I choose Reply to Group again - and the text I'm immediately replying to is not quoted. Yet I notice that others using Outlook Express can reply with the quoting intact, and I can reply to them with the quoting appearing properly. Restarting Windows Mail does not resolve this.
Dell Inspiron, Vista home prem. This happens very occasionally. Working in a window, pause for a few seconds and the title bar dims and and the window becomes inactive and another open window title bar or a desktop icon will become highlighted ("active"). I have to mouse click in the window I was working in to reactivate it. This will keep repeating until I reboot. Any ideas on why this is occurring and how to keep it from happening in the future?

For some reason my Windows DVD Maker has ceased to work when it used to work perfectly. I am able to add files to burn but when I hit next and go to where I can change the settings before burning it says that "windows dvd player has stopped working and windows is checking to see if there is a solution to the problem" I then get a message box stating "a problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
This program used to work just fine but stopped working and I do not get a notification of what the problem is or a code or something from Windows. I've recently updated to SP1 using Vista on an Acer 5570 laptop. I've tried changing the speed and placing the video on my desktop instead of pulling from folders but that makes no difference. I've changed file extensions, downloaded other programs to convert files to different types thinking that's what was wrong. Nothing has worked. I can view just fine using Windows Media Player so I'm not sure why I can no longer burn using this program......
I keep getting the following error when I try to print. Job Status Window Interface has stopped Working. I called Lexmark and they said it was a windows problem. Has anybody had this problem? Is there a fix for it?

Did a clean install, installed motherboard BIOS updates, scanner BIOS updates, Vista updates and the correct driver from HP. The scanner installed and Device Manager says device is working properly. When I try to scan, scanner initializes, starts to scan then locks up. Then can no longer be seen. ASUS M2N-E motherboard with AMD dual core. Other than that Vista works OK with the rest of my system

Late last year I successfully installed AoE II on my computer and was able to play it in Windows 98 compatibility without any issues. More recently whenever I try to play it, the window "Age of Empires II has stopped working." pops up.
I have updated patches, I have tried using files from a flash drive, I've tried installing and reinstalling, disabling graphics card, and many of the other suggestions read on this forum, none of which worked for me. I also installed the Trial version, and ironically, it works perfectly fine.
Can anyone explain this: 3219. The screenshot shows the folder view (in Windows Explorer), and a directory listing (in a Command Line window). Why is the Explorer window showing different filenames than the command line window? It's not so much of an issue, as I'm currently completing a scheduled backup of this drive using Nero Burning ROM, and will be formatting it soon.

It needs some clarifications:
In Pavillion and Presario notebooks, HP Rec Mgr does more than just System restore. And btw, HP does not have its own version of SR. It runs Windows' version.
HP Rec Mgr has other functions: Re-install original software programs and hardware drivers and complete System Recovery restoring the original hard disk factory template. It can be utilized to create a set of recovery discs.
In HP Business notebook, Rec Mgr does not re-install software progs and drivers but does the others listed in Pavilion/Presario models.
I don't think HP Recovery Manager should be uninstalled. Or if perchance, he meant uninstalling System Restore, be aware that HP Rec Mgr will be unable to system restore on its own if Windows SR is unstalled or disabled.
Just about 1-2 weeks ago i was sitting comfortably in my living room gaming away when i noticed the game i was playing started having problems. In the mist of playing my keyboard locks up and mouse freezes and i can't move my character at all. I can't even alt+tab to task manager to fix the problem. I noticed the windows vista error sound play and then a few seconds later the game resumes normally.
I thought it was the particular game, but when i ditched it and started playing navyfield i noticed the same problem occurring there.
Anyone have any idea what could be causing this problem? I was thinking driver related problems or possible graphics since the problem never occurs outside of gaming. When the problem happens the green lights for numb lock etc.. quickly off and on. I have disabled trusted installer thinking it was lag durring game and that cause the information to pause....I have recently reformated my hard drived with the disk that came with the computer and did a full installation of windows updates.

This is a hidden file in the folder (user)/AppData / Local. To resolve this issue, I did the following:
1. Start task manager.
2. Right-click the file in task manager
3. Select the option gOpen containing folderh.
4. Close task manager.........

View 3 Replies View RelatedI was having problems with my pc freezing. Took it in for a diognostic and everything came back fine. They said it was a Vista problem.
So, I reinstalled the operating system disk and put windows back on the PC.
Now when I turn on my PC I get the Windows Boot Manager screen asking to choose operationg system to star with two versions of Vista to choose from. The first on the list is the rebooted (new) version. If I click on the second one, it is my old version with all my old files and programs.
Funny thing is, I am not having any issues with the old version any more.(YET)
Is there anyway to get rid of the rebooted (new) version windows so I can stop getting the windows boot manager whenever I start the PC? I rather keep using the version with all my old programs and files since it seems to be fine.
I ran XP, I installed Vista to the next partition, I want to eliminate XP,but the Vista boot MANAGER is on the XP partition. I tried hiding the XP partition, booting the Vista CD and doing a repair (twice) but when it boots, it tells me NTLDR is missing.

It doesn't shut down frozen (non responding) programs including WindowsMail, IE7 or MozillaFF... all of which "stop responding" constantly. We're all getting sick and tired of having to reboot to get anything done online. I can't find any infections on this PC which has WDefender, Avast, Spybot, Adaware, A-Squared and ZoneAlarm. We ran all these programs, updated, several times and no viruses or other crapware was found. This Vista Home Premium is less stable than the old W98 we recently gave away. In fact we had less problems with W98 than we're having with Vista.
